Many diseases both malignant and non-malignant, have a genetic basis either in the form of altered chromosome numbers or in the structure of the chromosome / gene / DNA. There are a number of methods by which these abnormalities can be identified such as G banding and Karyotyping, Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH), molecular methods (PCR) etc. Knowledge about the genetic abnormalities has a number of clinical applications a) In developmental disorders: To explain the

prognosis and to counsel the parents about the chances of the next child being normal / abnormal.

b) In cancers: For primary tumor diagnosis, to understand the prognosis and response to treatment, and to define specific treatment protocols based on the underlying genetic abnormality. !

Who should attend? Laboratory technologists. !THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IS LIMITED TO TWENTY ONLY. Preference will be given to one technologist from one institute. The second will be admitted depending on vacancy.
