Workshop 2C Happy Beats – Music for Fun & Learning

Carol Crees Adventures in Music

Music is a fantastic learning tool for young children. We can assist children’s gross motor, fine motor, aural (listening), language and social skills. Music also taps into children’s innate musical intelligence and their pleasure in playing and creating in a musical way. Young children need to move, rhyme, sing and experiment with making sounds on found objects or simple percussion instruments. If we can plan for varied, progressively challenging activities, we will support maximum learning opportunities.

This workshop will use, rhymes, finger -plays, touch activities, easy action songs and varied props to explore beat, rhythm, rest, dynamics and melody as well as creating our own dance.

Carol was a school teacher and social worker before concentrating on early childhood music and movement. She trained as a recreational folk dance teacher with Folk Dance Australia, developing an enduring love of multicultural music and dance. Carol has extended her interest in young children’s learning and new brain research by completing a Masters in Early Childhood Studies from Macquarie University focusing on movement and learning for young children.

Carol has 20 years’ experience working with young children and training teachers and carers in music and movement with workshops providing an excellent opportunity to learn developmentally appropriate songs, rhymes, dances and movement activities. Update your skills, gain new ideas, increase confidence and keep in touch with current research, in a creative, relaxed, fun way.

Workshop 2D Loose Parts and Rethinking Recycling

Rachel Rothwell, Education Co-ordinator Reverse Garbage Co-operative

Reverse Garbage was established in 1974 by a group of teachers who were determined to help the environment by diverting industrial discards from landfill and by reusing materials in their classrooms. Reverse Garbage is committed to diverting resources from landfill – each year accept approximately 35,000 cubic metres or 100 football fields of items which may otherwise end up in the bin.

40 years on Reverse Garbage is now an internationally recognised, award-winning environmental co-operative committed to promoting sustainability through the reuse of resources available at its Marrickville warehouse, as well as providing support to other community, creative and educational organisations.

In an early childhood settings, loose parts are materials that may inspire children’s imagination and creativity and can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together by children in multiple way. Loose parts can be natural or synthetic.

The workshop touches on the theory of loose parts providing an introduction to loose parts play and the creative reuse of everyday items to enhance play. Hands on practical examples will be explored of loose parts play and creative reuse of easily accessible resources that are readily available through household recycling materials.

Rachel has over 20 years’ experience in education as both a teacher and professional learning facilitator across the education sector, with tertiary qualifications in both Environmental Science and Education. She has deep knowledge of practical pedagogies and child directed inquiry learning through her work in science education. Since joining Reverse Garbage in early 2016, Rachel has extended this hands-on approach to include creative reuse and has been working extensively with schools and early childhood providers implementing reuse loose parts play materials into their programs. Rachel believes learning should be practical, fun and sustainable and brings each of these elements into her workshops

Workshop 4E Putting the You in Unique! Make your Mobile service indispensable

Rebecca (Bec) Lloyd Founding and Managing Director Bec & Call Communication

It's never been more important for Mobile Children’s services to be able to describe the unique value they provide to their communities. This intensive workshop will amplify your ability to quickly and clearly present a memorable story about your service that will stick in the minds of your key stakeholders. Through reflective questioning you will create a framework for your story, starting from your contractual obligations, that ultimately reveals the most engaging and unique ways you and your team meet your community's needs. Using the seminar workbook you will capture your story and your next steps, ready for action back at work. End result: a way to show that no one else can do what you can do. You are indispensable!

Rebecca Lloyd (Bec) is a natural choice to help Mobile Meet attendees tackle your special challenges. Born in Alice Springs, Bec began school in Victoria’s channel country and completed Year 1 all over Australia by mailed correspondence lessons. She finished school in a tiny town in the north of NSW, at one of the smallest high schools in the state

Bec is the founder and Managing Director of Bec & Call Communication, Australia’s only specialist communication consultancy for the school and early childhood education sector. Her extensive and unique experience in professional communication and education management will give you insights into your own abilities you may never have imagined before. Bec’s client list includes schools, early childhood and outside school hours education and care services, peak bodies, and government agencies. Originally a newspaper journalist, she has managed communication and events teams in state and national education agencies including ACECQA and BOSTES. After spending most of her adult life in Sydney, she relocated with her family in 2015 to a village on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, gaining yet another view of rural and regional education issues via her teenaged children. In her infrequent spare time, she creates quirky watercolour illustrations, runs a tour for ECEC foodies and apologises for the behavior of her Labradors on the dog beach.
