The mission of Safety Center Incorporated is to reduce injuries and save lives by providing safety education and training.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

No one should be injured or die as a result of an unsafe act! Too many people, however, still are. Safety Center is committed to reducing the likelihood of these injuries and deaths. Being safe on the job is more than just knowing how to be safe. It requires a commitment based on safety being a core value for the company and for each of its employees. At Safety Center we are dedicated to empowering our clients to make positive life-saving decisions. Our safety training utilizes interactive, hands-on teaching techniques to maximize its impact on participants, to really change attitudes and, thus, behavior. This is our passion.

We also believe that the message of safety needs to be given at all stages of life. At Safety Center, we start with children, laying the foundation by teaching them safety lessons appropriate to their age in fun ways – in Sacramento at our Safetyville USA or through our Facebook page. Teens, just learning to drive and often, through peer pressure, experiencing the temptation of drugs and alcohol, are at a vulnerable stage of life. Safety Center offers experiential safety education through the use of driving simulators and participatory learning through our teen defensive driving and alcohol/drug classroom education programs. Seniors, too, have unique safety needs. We offer seniors training in how to compensate for their reduced mobility and reflexes when driving.

Safety Center is a 501(c)(3) community benefit organization whose purpose is to reduce injuries and save lives. You can join us in this mission by making a philanthropic gift in support of a safe community. For more information on how to help, please visit our website: www.safetycenter.org/donate or contact Kelly Huffman, VP of Development, at (916)438-3355 or [email protected]. Your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.

CERTIFIED SAFETY MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST DESIGNATION

Certified Safety Management Specialist (CSMS) is a designation awarded by Safety Center’s Professional Safety Institute to individuals who complete the entire Safety Specialist

Certificate series and successfully sit for the certification examination.

The Professional Safety Institute (PSI) was founded in 1996. Since its inception, PSI has graduated over 700 Safety Management Specialists in the public and private sectors. Professional Safety Institute courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program. Courses are designed for beginners and for seasoned safety professionals.

Institute courses are not designed to compete with government required technical courses; rather, they are designed to aid students in the creation of effective safety programs at their workplaces. Students gain career skills and an excellent addition to professional resumes through graduation from the Professional Safety Institute.

The Core, Technical and Management certificates involve three one-day classes that are held two to three times per year on a rotating basis.

Students are strongly encouraged to take these courses in order as each level builds upon skills acquired in prior sessions.

In charge of safety at work? Don’t panic! This class explains the creation of a safety program from the ground up, how to keep it going and how to make it effective.

This class is the foundation course for the Safety Management Specialist Certificate. In this course, students gain knowledge of the techniques and tools used most often by safety management specialists. The information provided can be used immediately on a daily basis back on the job.

The course is designed to assist the safety management specialist in implementing successful occupational safety and health programs. Developing and implementing new safety programs, maintaining their effectiveness, meeting regulatory compliance and obtaining management, supervisory and employee buy-in requires a great deal of the safety management specialist’s time. This course teaches students how to use that time effectively.

Course topics include benefits of safety, initial steps to program development, successful safety program structures, using Cal/OSHA’s Title 8, personal workspace safety, illumination, hand safety, slips/trips and falls, back injury prevention and materials handling, repetitive strain injuries, fire extinguishers, manual and portable power tools, Cal/OSHA hazard correction priorities, machine guarding, personal protective equipment (PPE) and multi-employer work sites.

What records do you keep? This class covers reporting and recordkeeping requirements. You’ll also review safety documentation as it relates to the California Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) requirements, exposure records, hazard communication and other important topics. By the end of this class, you’ll know how to effectively maintain records and, yes, you’ll be able to confidently complete an OSHA 300 log!

Maintaining required records is one of the most complicated aspects of OSHA compliance. OSHA Injury and Illness Recordkeeping comprises most of the course curriculum. Although OSHA and Cal/OSHA have simplified this recordkeeping process, it is still a difficult subject. This class covers the requirements and methods for accurate recordkeeping. Discussion on the differences between OSHA recordkeeping and workers compensation documentation is also an integral part of this training.

Your worst nightmare has come true. One of your employees has sustained a workplace injury. What do you do? This class guides you through the accident investigation process and shows you how to use past accidents to prevent injuries, property damage and financial loss in the future. You’ll learn why people take chances, how to strengthen management styles to prevent losses, and how to choose the best person to conduct accident investigations.

This class examines accident investigation as a means to prevent injuries, property damage and financial loss. Despite the best safety programs and intentions, accidents sometime occur. Consequently,

safety specialists must be able to discover root causes of an accident and to take corrective action to prevent recurrence.

This course is designed to answer the six basic questions of accident investigation: who, what, when, where, how and why through the use of real-life case studies. Course curriculum includes discussions on:

• Why People Take Risks • Who Should Conduct Investigations • Modern Loss Investigation and Analysis Tools • What Causes Accidents • Effective Data Collection Techniques • Management System Weaknesses that Lead to Losses • Effective Interviewing Techniques • Accident/Incident Report Formats and Report Preparation

This course addresses shifts in paradigms. Comfortable modes of thinking will be challenged to allow students to gain new insight into applying safety programs and achieving group cohesion. These same principles can be incorporated into students’ daily professional lives. Some of the topics covered include:

Stuff happens! Even the best safety programs have problems they must solve. This course teaches students analytical tools for assessing and correcting safety problems as they occur using real-life case scenarios.

Students practice the practical application of techniques gained throughout the entire Safety Management Specialist series - preparing students to solve safety problems professionally. Students practice newly acquired skills using real-life safety management problems as case studies. Students will be encouraged to seek solutions while exploring what comprises a successful safety program.

Elements critical for successful safety program management are reviewed in this course. The primary focus is on continually applying these factors to their own organizations. The course includes a safety committee problem-solving template for those students who use or want to use safety committees. Students have the opportunity to review a selection of quantitative and qualitative safety program evaluation techniques including modern problem-solving tools that can be applied to almost any safety issue in the work environment.

It’s crucial that you know what to do in the first 72 hours after a natural or man-made disaster. Emergency responders report that in the event of a large-scale disaster, they will be overwhelmed and unable to respond to all people.

Learn how to take care of yourself, family and co-workers in this intense three-day course. Day one is a first aid class with emphasis on trauma. Day two prepares you for various disaster scenarios. Day three you will experience a field exercise with many twists and turns, realistic injuries, and more, giving you a feel for the real thing. Live the experience!

This 1-day class will expose participants to a wide variety of real-life scenarios and situations that they might face during the first 72 hours following a disaster. Instructors will assist participants through highly interactive hands-on practical skills development covering a graphic look beyond the requirements and how to put your emergency plan to the test including: • First Aid / Triage • Light rescue techniques • Moving injured victims • Sanitation • Establish safe/functional evacuation area • Dealing with deceased • How to set up essential camp services • Other associated hazards

“I liked the connection of the instructor with the trainees. The class showed how lacking we are as an organization, community, family and state and are so ill-prepared to survive for 72 hours out of our comfort zones. The instructor presented the class with energy and positive thinking beyond basic training. If you don’t walk out of this class realizing how lacking we are regarding the ability to adapt and overcome situations, ‘your dead.’ The question is, are you going to remain walking?” -Troy Minnick,Victor Valley Wastewater

to monitor new drivers so they can earn driving independence.
