What it is:
• The system inside your computer that enables it to run software
• Uses icons (pictures) to access and work within programs.

BITS AND PIECES:
• Software: program in which the user works (examples: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
• Hardware: actual pieces of equipment (examples: printers, scanners, etc.)
• Driver: software that sends signals between the Windows operating system and hardware. Now have USB.
• Memory: actually Random Access Memory (RAM), where your computer stores the information you input

THE DESKTOP:
Using icons to access your computer
• DOUBLE click the icon
Note: RIGHT clicking the icon once opens a dialogue box that allows you multiple options

THOSE THREE (OK, Four) LITTLE BUTTONS
Keeps program open while “hiding” the window
Reduces the size of the window
Restores window to full screen
Closes the window (or program)
Upper right-hand corner of the screen

CREATING FILES AND FOLDERS
• DOUBLE click on “My Computer” icon
• DOUBLE click on “Hard Drive” icon
• Select (from menu) FILE > NEW > FOLDER – folder icon will appear with highlighted wording “new folder”
• Type in new name for your folder while highlighted
• DOUBLE click to access your new folder

THE DESKTOP:
To rearrange icons (and have them stay put):
• RIGHT click on a blank space on the desktop
• Select “Arrange Icons
• If “Auto Arrange” has a checkmark next to it, select and LEFT click to turn off that function

COPY A FLOPPY
• Place the floppy disk into the computer’s disk drive
• DOUBLE click on the “My Computer” icon
• RIGHT click on “3 ½ Floppy [A:]”
• When prompted, insert a new disk. Press OK.
