Purpose
• User will understand when and why to use interpretive services (K and A)
• User will demonstrate ability to work with trained medical interpreters
• User will understand important issues to avoid
Why use interpreters?
• Accurate and timely diagnoses • More cost-effective diagnosis and treatment • Improved compliance with medication and
treatment plans • Better health outcomes
Introduction to Pt
• User meets LEP patient and should ask-– What is your preferred language to discussed the
medical encounter?• Consider specific dialects
– Is an interpreter needed?– Should request service of trained interpreter.
Introduction to Interpreter• User should introduce self and any others in
the session to the interpreter.• User should conduct a pre-session with the
interpreter before the interpreting begins• User should request proper seating
arrangement- facing pt with int. on the side-triangle
• User should make a commitment to LEP pt regarding confidentiality before starting.
During session• User should choose short clear sentences and
pause frequently• User should directly speak to pt not interpreter.• User should use simple language avoid medical
jargon, slang or metaphors.• User should explain in simple terms complicated
concepts or terminology.• User should allow extra time b/c everything has
to be repeated in the target language• User should allow time for questions.
During session
• User should give full information on diagnosis, tests, or treatments
• User should confirm understanding and get agreement from the patient and interpreter
• Ask the patient to communicate back to you (through the interpreter) his understanding of the session if there is concern about accuracy.
After Session
• Speak privately with interpreter about cultural or emotional subtleties that may have been present.
• Document presence of interpreters or if pt refuses interpreters in chart.
Things to avoid
• Avoid using family members, friends or other individuals as interpreters
• Never ask a minor children to interpret.• Avoid speaking to loudly or rushing through
questions• Avoid thinking out loud or side conversations• Avoid choosing inappropriate interpreters by
considering the gender, ethnicity and dialect of LEP pt.
