E.J. Harrison Family Youth Center in Saticoy Opens

Th e Harrison Family and I wish you a Happy Th anksgiving! We hope you get to share this special holiday with family and friends.

Th anksgiving, however, is more than just a large shared meal. At this time we pause to count our blessings. Th e Harrison Family feels blessed to have had a successful business with wonderful customers for over 81 years. We thank our employees who provide you with outstanding customer service. In addition, we thank our troops overseas protecting our freedom and wish them a safe Th anksgiving and a speedy return home.

Ralph, Jim and Myron Harrison also are very thankful they still have with them their mother Myra, the company’s co-founder who turns 99 in February!

Th e doors have swung open for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura’s new Saticoy clubhouse – the E.J. Harrison Family Youth Center.

Saticoy boys and girls have been enjoying the new clubhouse that features a separate technology area, teen room, learning center, kitchen, art room, offi ce, lobby, multipurpose room and games room since mid-October.

We’re holding an offi cial grand opening on Th ursday, Nov. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. A number of local dignitaries will be on hand, and the event will give community members an opportunity to interact with the kids in their new “stomping grounds.” Cocktails will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m., during which attendees can also tour the clubhouse.

We’re thrilled with the beautiful new E.J. Harrison Family Youth Center! It replaces the old 1,500-square-foot clubhouse in Saticoy Park – a dual-wide construction site trailer that the Ventura County Sheriff ’s Department donated to B&GCV aft er building the Todd Road Jail about 20 years ago.

Harrison Industries matched the contribution the Ventura County Board of Supervisors made in 2010 to launch the $1.3 million project. Th e new building was designed by Main Street Architects of Ventura. Th ey did a great job!

Harrison Sharpshooters Enter ‘Shootout for Scouting’

Harrison Sponsors Boy Scouts Gala on Nov. 15

Harrison Industries is a proud sponsor of the Ventura County Council, Boy Scouts of America’s 37th Annual Dinner Gala & Auction that takes place on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard.

Th is wonderful gala is black tie optional and includes a cocktail reception, silent and live auction and dinner. Th e Harrisons really look forward to this evening because our co-founder E.J. Harrison was a Boy Scouts pack leader 70 years ago and his sons Ralph, Jim and Myron were all Boy Scouts.

Tickets are $200 each and can be purchased by calling the Ventura County Council offi ce at 482-8938. Th e Harrison family will be out in force and we hope to see you there!

Nine members of the Harrison family and Agromin CEO Bill Camarillo played rifl emen for a day and for a good cause at the Boy Scouts of America, Ventura County Council’s annual “Shootout for Scouting” on Oct. 4 at the Oak Tree Gun Club in Newhall.

Harrison Industries sponsored the event and also entered two fi ve-man teams. Th e Harrison Industries team was comprised of Ralph Harrison, Myron Harrison, Lynn Harrison, David Harrison and Willy Castillo. Team E.J. Harrison & Sons was made up of Jim Harrison, Mike Harrison, George Harrison, Darren Harrison and Bill Camarillo.

Myron Harrison was the sharpest shooter among the Harrisons. He scored 55 out of a possible 75 points. In all, 205 shooters comprising 41 teams entered this friendly but fi erce competition that raised over $73,000 for local Boy Scouts.

Agromin CEO Discusses Food Waste Program at VCEDA Event

Harrison Industries honored our veterans by participating in two events sponsored by the Gold Coast Veterans Foundation.

We and our strategic partner Agromin co-sponsored a table that Ventura City Councilman Jim Monahan fi lled with local military heroes at a reception held Oct. 27 at Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo. More than 200 guests attended the ceremony, including active members of the military, veterans, law enforcement offi cers and legislators.

Th e following morning, on Oct. 28, our golfi ng foursome of Vice President Myron Harrison, Controller Mike Marostica, Assistant Controller Phil Campos and Steve Shinski of City National Bank competed in the event’s eighth annual golf tournament. All funds from the reception and tournament support veterans in the Tri-Counties.

GCVF’s mission is to help veterans, especially those in most need, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Th e GCVF provides hope and opportunity for veterans and their families by identifying and supporting the development of programs to fulfi ll unmet needs as well as partnering with existing organizations to provide veterans’ services.

Bill Camarillo, CEO and President of our strategic partner Agromin, was among the panelists of the county’s top energy industry leaders at the 43rd annual Business Outlook Conference on Oct. 25.

“Seeking an Energy Balance” was the theme of the BOC at the Ventura County Offi ce of Education Conference Center in Camarillo and presented by the Ventura County Economic Development Association. Bill Watkins, executive director of the Center for Economics Research and Forecasting at California Lutheran University, was keynote speaker at this important and informative conference that Harrison Industries co-sponsored.

Panelists discussed what the future holds for solar, natural gas, biofuel and oil. Camarillo talked about Agromin and Harrison’s pilot food waste program that since April 2012 has diverted over 1,500 tons of biodegradable food scraps from our local landfi lls. Th e food waste, collected by Harrison trucks, is instead mixed with yard waste in a Covered Aerated Static Pile composting system to create enriched organic compost.

We’re proud of our partnership with Agromin and we feel that our work is a great example of how businesses can succeed environmentally.

Another panelist was Sean Wine of Clean Engery, the company constructing the new compressed natural gas fueling station for Harrison Industries that will be up-and-running soon.

Th e Ventura Economic Development Association – VCEDA – the past year has been setting up a series of monthly “Business Connection” get-togethers for VCEDA members at local businesses they might not ordinarily visit. Th e idea is for members to develop a deeper understanding of the businesses and their industry so VCEDA can better advocate for them in the future.

I was happy to chair the October get-together at the construction site for the new Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. Gary Wilde, president and CEO of Community Memorial Health System, gave a presentation and answered questions about the six-story, 325,000-square-foot hospital that is being built next to the current hospital. He said it will have 250 private rooms, comfortable space for families and a healing garden on the grounds.

Th e new CMH, Wilde added, meets seismic demands and also will have a larger Emergency Room and greater imaging capability than the present hospital. It also will have additional Heart Catheterization labs, expanded Intensive Care and Cardiac Care Recovery Units, and a larger Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Th e hospital’s 10 surgical theaters will have leading-edge medical technology. It is scheduled to open in 2015.

Haunting of the Harbor’ Business Expo Was So Fun It Was Scary

Harrison Industries was one of about 60 companies with booths at the Ventura Chamber’s 2013 “Haunting of the Harbor” Business Expo held on Oct. 24 at the Four Points Sheraton.

Th is fun event also featured fi ve food booths, raffl es, auction items, a blackout card drawing for $100 and other fun surprises! Th e big prize was a big-screen TV. Th e best part of the semi-annual Ventura Chamber Business Expo, however, is they give a big lift to the business community by providing local companies and organizations a chance to share their products and services with area residents and one another.

‘Taste of Ojai’ is a Feast for Culinary Enthusiasts

Th e “Haunting of the Harbor” also gives everyone the opportunity to mingle with old friends and fellow Chamber members. We were happy to visit with a large number of Harrison Industries customers who stopped by our booth, which was manned by Harrison Recycling Coordinator Peter Gutierrez and Food Waste Coordinator Donald Sealund. Th anks to all who were involved in the eff ort!

Th e Ojai Valley Inn & Spa provided a gorgeous setting for the 13th annual “Taste of Ojai” benefi t on Oct. 27.

Over 500 people attended “Taste of Ojai” that featured local wine and beers, fantastic food from Ojai’s fi nest restaurants and great music and dancing.

Th e Rotary Club of Ojai puts on this wonderful event that supports more than 15 local non-profi t organizations serving Ojai Valley families, seniors, schools and youth, including the “Fit Kids” program. Harrison Industries sponsors the event by providing free trash service.

Residents of Fillmore disposed of tons of clutter at the fall “City-Wide Clean Up Day” on Sept. 28. It was a big success.

Th ey brought trash, recyclables, furniture, appliances, old tires, refrigerators, electronic waste – you name it – to Well No. 4 on Goodenough Road, between A & B Streets, during a six-hour period that on a sunny Saturday, fi lling a number of Harrison roll-off bins.

Fillmore’s next City-Wide Clean Up Day is set for Saturday, March 29, 2014, so set your calendars!
