Harrison Industries is thrilled that Women’s Economic Ventures honored Myra Harrison with its Trailblazer Award at its “Empowerment is Priceless” breakfast on March 20. Th e breakfast, which celebrated WEV’s 20 years of creating successful entrepreneurs, was held at the Sterling Hills Country Club in Camarillo.

Th e Trailblazer Award is for women in Ventura County who have made a signifi cant contribution with respect to entrepreneurship, mentoring of other women, philanthropy or an overall very positive impact on quality of life in Ventura County. Myra, who turned 97 on Feb. 17, indeed has led an incredible life!

One of 12 children and a direct descendent of a member of the DeAnza party which founded the San Buenaventura Mission, Myra was born Marina Velarde in 1915 in Ventura. She was a 17-year-old mother when she and her husband E.J. Harrison established the Harrison Transfer Company in 1932. Th at year, E.J. fashioned a truck from several car bodies that he called “Chop Suey” and began making a modest living by hauling his neighbors’ trash to the Ventura dumps for 75 cents a load. Myra helped with the books.

In its fi rst year of business, Harrison Transfer Company had 150 customers. Today, 80 years later, we serve about 90,000 customers in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Myra remains with the company as co-founder, while four generations of Harrison family members are involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. Myra’s oldest son Ralph is president while her other sons Jim and Myron serve as vice presidents.

Proceeds from the breakfast support WEV’s fabulous programs, including self-employment training, business consulting and its small business loan fund.

Assembly Bill 341 Requires Commercial Recycling

A quick reminder: California Assembly Bill 341 takes eff ect on July 1. Th at’s just three months away! AB 341 mandates commercial recycling for all businesses that generate four or more cubic yards of waste per week and all multi-family dwellings with fi ve units or more regardless of the amount of waste.

Most Harrison Industries customers are already in compliance with this regulation. However, all municipalities are required to conduct education and outreach activities to inform and assure all aff ected commercial generators know what can be recycled locally and are making good-faith eff orts to recycle.

Hundreds Go ‘Cruising’ to Benefi t Santa Clara Valley Boys & Girls

Th e Santa Paula Community Center was transformed into “Th e Love Boat” on Feb. 18 as the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley held a Valentine’s celebration fundraiser, the theme of which was “Cruising.”

Over 200 party-goers, including a number of Harrison Industries employees, dressed up in Upper Deck formal attire for a moonlight cruise on the high seas. Th e romantic event featured dinner, a live and silent auction, musical entertainment and dancing.

Gavin MacLeod, who portrayed Captain Merrill Stubing in TV’s “Love Boat,” served as honorary chairman of the evening. While MacLeod was unable to attend, he donated autographed “Love Boat” memorabilia that was auctioned. Santa Paula Police Chief Steve MacKinnon, who also serves as president of B&GCSCV Board, said the veteran character actor was very fl attered by the invitation.

“Cruising” was a wonderful event that raised much needed funds for kids in Santa Paula and Fillmore. Th e Harrison family salutes all involved.

Harrison can provide free waste assessments to show you how you can improve your waste diversion. Th e legislation also sets a State goal of reducing the amount of trash sent to landfi lls by 75% by 2020. Although all cities we serve are close to that diversion level, it will take the cooperation of all commercial and residential customers to achieve this goal.

Looking Forward to the 18th Ventura Music Festival and its Gala

Th e 18th Ventura Music Festival will be here before you know it, so start making plans. Th is year’s festival runs May 3-12 and will off er music lovers a glorious blend of jazz and classical music. Performers include Italian saxophonist Federico Mondelci, opera singer Nicole Cabell, the Emerson String Quartet and the Cuban jazz group Tiempo Libre.

Harrison Industries is a Silver Sponsor of the Ventura Music Festival and also a proud sponsor of its Opening Night Gala on May 3 at the Ventura Beach Marriott. It begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour, with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Th e jazz trio Coda will provide the evening’s musical entertainment.

66th Ojai Music Festival Will Have Distinctive Norwegian Flair

Norwegian pianist and festival fi rst-timer Leif Ove Andsnes will serve as music director of the 66th annual Ojai Music Festival June 7-10 at the beautifully restored Libbey Bowl. He also will perform as soloist in the United States premiere of Norwegian composer Bent Srensen’s Piano Concerto No. 2 “La Mattina.”

Mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn will make her fi rst festival appearance in an opening-night concert that includes the Dmitri Shostakovich song cycle “Six Poems of Mariana Tsvetaeva,” Op. 143. Also making their debuts at the festival known for its blending of classical and contemporary music will be pianist Marc-André Hamelin, clarinetist Martin Fröst, violist Antoine Tamestit, conductor-composer Reinbert de Leeuw and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.
