Gold Coast Recycling HR Director Retires after 29 Years with Harrison

It’s with mixed emotions that we announce that Larry Garcia has retired aft er 29 years with the company. He served as the Human Resources-Safety Director at Harrison Industries from 1986-1998 before moving over to Gold Coast Recycling Center & Transfer Station, where he has served as Human Resources-Safety Director for the past 17 years.

We’re happy for Larry but we’re also going to miss him a lot. He was a valued employee for three decades and will be diffi cult to replace. As Gold Coast Recycling General Manager George Harrison put it, “He’s a great guy that my family feels fortunate to have had work for us for so many years.”

Larry said the feeling was mutual. “It’s an awesome company to work for, with great employees. It was a great experience.”

Larry plans to spend his Golden Years occupied with woodworking projects at home and, “learning one song on the guitar.” But fi rst, Larry and his wife Kathy are looking forward to taking a cross-country trip to visit family in Virginia, Pittsburgh and Boston.

How long will they be gone? “No timetable,” he answered. “I’m retired, you know.”

Old Town Camarillo was teeming with fun activities for the entire family July 9-12 as the city celebrated its annual Fiesta & Street Fair. About 30,000 guests attended this year’s four-day event.

Th ere were more than 200 craft and food vendors, carnival rides and a farmers market. George Harrison, general manager of Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station, performed one of his fi rst duties as the new president of the Camarillo Sunrise Rotary by overseeing the Rotary’s popular Beer Garden, which raised $20,000 over the weekend. Way to go, George and his fellow Rotarians!

Opening night featured $1 rides at the Fiesta’s 19-ride carnival. Special activities included a Friday night car cruise of classic automobiles, the opening of the Camarillo Street Fair on Saturday, and a classic car show on Sunday. Children enjoyed a Kids Fun Zone, pony and camel rides, and a petting zoo all four days.

Music acts included tribute bands to Willie Nelson, the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the British Invasion of

the ‘60s, Led Zeppelin and Credence Clearwater Revival. Other acts performed jazz, country, blue grass, mariachi, funk, reggae, blues, punk – you name it! Th e Camarillo High School band also performed.

Harrison Industries donated trash and recycling hauling service to this fun event that benefi ted the football, water polo and band programs at Camarillo High School.

For the past four years, the Harrisons have enjoyed a fun day in the sun at Carpinteria’s Rods & Roses Car Show in downtown Carpinteria. Th e 18th annual event took place on June 27.

Of the approximately 150 classic cars lined up and down Linden Avenue, several belonged to Harrison family members and employees.

Lynn Harrison, general manager for Harrison Industries, was the day’s big winner, taking home the “Best in Show” award for his 1969 Chevy Camaro SS. Ed Harrison, who manages our Paint, Body and Container Shop, earned the Merchant’s Award from John Risdon of Risdon’s Auto Group for his 1933 Ford three-window coupe. It was a reminder of “Jalopy Days” for the Harrison family since Harrison President Ralph Harrison raced jalopies in his younger days.

Th e Harrisons also sponsored a Merchant’s Award, going to Carpinteria resident Gilbert Hall for his custom 1947 Ford pickup convertible. George Harrison, general manager of Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station, joined Lynn and Ed Harrison and Jimi Hampton, our fi eld supervisor for the Channel Islands Beach Communities Services District and Naval Base Ventura County, in making the presentation.

Rods & Roses also included an Independence Day Parade, and Sales Manager David Harrison accepted the honor of driving a fully automated Harrison residential recycling truck down the parade route. Joining David in the cab were his wife Sandy and sons, 9-year-old Orion and 5-year-old Cameron. Th ey had a lot of fun waving at parade-goers!

Rods & Roses benefi ts “Carpinteria Cares for Youth” and other local youth organizations and service groups. Th e Harrisons love their classic cars and eagerly await next year’s event!

‘Team Fusion’ Learns All About Recycling During Tour a t Gold Coast Recycling

‘Cowboys’ Wrangle Waves at Surf Rodeo in Ventura

Steve Lorenzana, operations manager for Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station, recently accepted the honor of giving a guided tour of our Colt Street facility to an impressive group of Ventura boys with a keen interest in recycling.

Th e six boys call themselves Team Fusion and they joined the FIRST LEGO League’s “2015 Trash Trek Challenge.” Th e boys are among 290,000 children ages 9 to 16 from over 80 countries exploring the world of trash and recycling. Th e FIRST LEGO League challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. Teams choose and solve a real-world trash problem in the project while celebrating the FIRST LEGO League’s core values of discovery, teamwork and gracious professionalism.

“Our team will set out to learn all about this year’s subject theme, identify potential areas of improvement, and participate to design, construct and program a Lego robotic vehicle to compete in a table match with other teams in the regional area,” Team Fusion co-leader Mark Eurwick emailed me.

What a wonderful project! And, according to Eurwick, the boys learned a lot from the tour.

“Th ank you so much for setting up an excellent visit,” Eurwick wrote. “Steve was amazing, showing us the entire process and answering questions along the way. Our robotics challenge team came up with many great ideas from the visit and will work hard to spread the word about how we can all recycle more eff ectively.”

Go, Team Fusion! Harrison Industries needs more young men like you to help us meet our goal of “Zero Waste.”

Th e annual Surf Rodeo, one of the most unique community events you’ll ever fi nd locally or anywhere else, was held July 11-12 at Ventura’s Pierpont Beach.

Th e Surf Rodeo consisted of surfi ng competitions with over 150 cowboy hat-wearing entrants of all ages. Surfers don’t use their own boards but one randomly selected for them, a bit like bull riding in a real rodeo.

Th is fun and rowdy event also featured music from more than 25 bands, lots of food, a wide range of vendor booths and two beer gardens. In addition, there was a Kids Corral with face painting and a jumper, as well as a Bikini Cowgirl contest, pie-eating contest and a corn hole competition. Skateboarding also was showcased.

Harrison Industries was a sponsor by donating a roll-off bin, trash/recycling bags and boxes. Proceeds from the event’s prized raffl e item – a restored 1963 Volkswagen bus – went to a worthy cause that we also support – the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura.

‘Bids for Kids’ Auction in Camarillo Raises $80,000

Harrison Provides Bins for Church’s ACTION’S Serve Day

A sell-out crowd of over 200 guests, including Ralph, Lynn and Dan Harrison and spouses, attended the annual “Bids for Kids” auction at Las Posas Country Club on June 6 that raised about $80,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo.

Auction items going to the highest bidder included a get-a-way to Antigua, a Palm Desert golf vacation and Dodger tickets. Th e tickets were courtesy of George Harrison, the Harrison family’s biggest Dodger fan.

“Bids for Kids” also featured a wonderful buff et dinner, cocktails, music and songs performed by young club members. Th e Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo serves over 400 Camarillo kids with aft er-school and summer programs aimed at building character and self-esteem.

Th e next major fundraiser for the club will be the third annual Cedric “Th e Entertainer” Celebrity Golf Classic on Aug. 17 at Spanish Hills Country Club. Th e tournament draws lots of sports celebrities. Last year’s entrants included Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving, baseball home run king Barry Bonds and football greats Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lott and Dwight Clark. Please Recycle, but Keep Trash and Plastic Bags Out of Blue Barrels

Harrison Industries – and Mother Nature – thank you for recycling. But also do your best to keep unrecyclable trash out of your blue residential recycling barrels. See the graphic to the right for what materials are accepted.

In the recycling bins we are fi nding food-contaminated items like soiled paper plates, pizza boxes and tin cans full of food that spill all over the legitimate recyclables, making these bins dirtier. Please help us keep things clean. Plastic bags are a big problem too. Plastic bags are not recyclable, and we encourage you to return them to the stores. Th e store folks don’t want them to end up in our landfi lls either.

Please try to keep it clean! Recycling is a team eff ort. You do your part, and we will do ours.
