The Work/Industry Futures Research Program is a cluster of eight multi-disciplinary researchers who address complex problems in organisational settings. The group engages in research that challenges the prevailing, conventional understanding of management and organisations and explicitly aims to advance social justice goals.

The Program’s three broad areas of focus – sustainable governance, employability, and just work – acknowledge the importance of connecting questions and data at different levels of analysis. Members of the Work/Industry Futures Research Program are linked through ongoing collaborative research projects, relationships with organisational partners, the shared supervision of higher degree research (HDR) students, and cross-faculty and cross-institutional collaborations.

This annual activity report for the Work/Industry Futures Research Program outlines the research and engagement outcomes of members in 2015. Bridging academic and organisational contexts, and with funding and support from industry partners, grants councils and the QUT Business School, members have engaged in research projects spanning topics including unpaid work and internships, divestment in fossil fuels, retention and engagement in the early years workforce, corporate social responsibility, employee voice and silence,

employment for indigenous Australians and social media at work. Our project partners included The Suncorp Group, Qld Department of Transport and Main Roads, Goodstart Early Learning, Australian Defence Force and Qld Department of Education and Training. New and ongoing industry and academic partnerships were also facilitated through invited lectures and professional/leadership positions on government, non-government organisations (NGO), university and private sector committees and governance groups. Several Work/Industry members were awarded Fellow status (including Principal and Senior) of the Higher Education Academy and the group welcomed six new Masters and PhD students whose research will address topics including Australian federalism, the value of fisheries for coastal communities, mining in developing regions and performance management and rewards systems.

The work of Carol Richards, and her colleagues Kristen Lyons and Peter Westoby from The University of Queensland, has resulted in the Swedish Minister for Climate and Environment, Åsa Romson, instructing the Swedish Energy Agency to stop purchasing carbon credits from the Green Resources forestry company who operate in East Africa. Carol researched Norwegian foreign land investments and co-authored a report about the impacts of Green Resources’ activities The Darker Side of Green Plantation Forestry and Carbon Violence in Uganda http://www.oaklandinstitute.org/darker-side-green. The report was picked up by a Swedish journalist, which resulted in a documentary being aired in Sweden in November 2015.

Industry and community engagement and impactPaula McDonald is one of four invited expert panel members to the Review of Sex Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, including predatory behaviour, in Victoria Police, conducted by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. As part of the review, Paula conducted in-depth interviews with Victoria Police Executive Command, informed the survey design and interview protocols, and worked with the review team on structuring the analysis and final report. Significant media coverage, including an article in The Conversation, coincided with the release of the extensive final report. Paula’s role on the expert panel will continue through to 2017 as Victoria Police implement the substantial recommendations detailed in the report.
