INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL MEDICINE WORKBOOKS
WORKBOOK SIX:
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM & THE MICROBIOME
This booklet aims to provide an understanding of the
digestive system: how it works, what can go wrong, and
some of the natural remedies which can help. It will also
cover the role of the microbiome and our good bacteria in
digestion and health.
2
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Good digestion is key to good health. This is because the digestive
system provides nutrients for the rest of the body, by breaking down
the food that we eat.
Poor digestion then will impact other health conditions, and anything we can
do to improve digestion will help to improve our health. Symptoms of poor
digestion are one of the primary markets in health food stores and pharmacy.
STARTING THE DIGESTIVE PROCESS:
Most people think that digestion starts in the stomach. However, good digestion actually begins in
the mouth. How quickly we eat, how effectively we chew, and our food choices will all have an
impact.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHEWING:
Taste and flavour are important: They send messages from our taste buds, letting the brain and
stomach know that food is on the way. Saliva also contains salivary amylase – an enzyme which
starts the digestion of carbohydrates. If we eat too quickly, or we choose a lot of bland foods, this
initial digestion does not occur and food is thrown down into a stomach which is not ready for it.
Symptoms linked to poor chewing and bland foods include:
• Bloating & Wind – in the upper digestive tract.
• Heartburn & Indigestion.
NATURAL WAYS TO SUPPORT BLOATING, WIND AND HEARTBURN
DIGESTIVE ENZYME COMPLEX
This product will provide a wide spectrum of digestive enzymes to help improve the
breakdown of food. A lot of heartburn is actually due to low stomach acid and poor
eating habits. This product also contains betaine hydrochloride which naturally raises
levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, thus reducing heartburn, bloating and upper
digestive wind.
ALOE VERA JUICE
Natures Aid Aloe Vera Juice is soothing, cooling and healing. This may help relieve some of
the heartburn symptoms.
Natures Aid Aloe Vera is concentrated, making it double strength and therefore great
value.
After swallowing the food moves on to:
3
THE STOMACH
The stomach is a muscular pouch full of hydrochloric acid. This acid is important to us, as it:
• Sterilises our food, helping to keep us healthy.
• Stimulates the production of Pepsin – a digestive enzyme which breaks down proteins.
• Facilitates the production of Intrinsic Factor – which is vital for Vitamin B12 absorption.
• Encourages the breakdown and absorption of minerals like calcium and magnesium.
Many people struggle with problems like heartburn and wind, and as a result are put onto
antacid medication (e.g. omeprazole). These medications prevent the production of
stomach acid, which long term can lead to other issues including:
• Problems absorbing minerals, which could result in low calcium, magnesium and iron levels.
• Poor vitamin B12 absorption, which could lead to deficiency issues.
• Insufficient protein digestion, which in turn could lead to bloating and wind.
NATURAL WAYS TO SUPPORT THOSE ON ANTACID MEDICATIONS
SUBLINGUAL B12
This is a vital recommendation, especially in pharmacies where PPI medications are
dispensed. Natures Aid B12 does not rely on hydrochloric acid for absorption – it is a
sublingual supplement, meaning that it is absorbed in the mouth. Taking a sublingual
vitamin B12 could prevent and support low energy, neuropathy and memory issues - to
name a few.
This form could also be used by people who know they have low vitamin B12 levels, to maximise
absorption.
OSTEO ADVANCE
The World Health Organisation suggests that women on PPI medications
supplement with calcium, to help look after their bones.
A balanced formula like Osteo Advance is ideal, as it will provide additional
important minerals like magnesium and zinc, as well as vitamins K2 and D3 - known
to maximise absorption of calcium.
DIGESTIVE ENZYME COMPLEX
Having all stomach acid production blocked will result in poor digestion of proteins. No
hydrochloric acid means no pepsin, and therefore poor protein breakdown. Therefore,
many people on antacid medications do still suffer with symptoms of indigestion.
Supplementing with Digestive Enzyme Complex can help those on antacid medications
with indigestion symptoms like wind and bloating.
4
THE LIVER AND GALL BLADDER
The liver and gall bladder are vital for the digestion of fats and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins
like vitamin D. The liver produces a substance called bile, which is stored in the gall bladder. When
we eat, bile is released into the small intestine, where it goes to work on any fats we have
consumed.
Bile also provides important lubrication for the bowel – helping to ensure effective regular
elimination of waste. Poor bile production can result in indigestion after eating fatty foods and
constipation.
NATURAL WAYS TO SUPPORT LIVER FUNCTION
DIGESTEEZE® – MILK THISTLE
Milk Thistle supports healthy liver function, which will in turn support better fat
digestion – easing indigestion symptoms and reducing feelings of nausea and poor
appetite. It will also support bile production, to lubricate the bowel and therefore
ease constipation.
Many people also choose Milk Thistle supplements to relieve the symptoms of
overindulgence – i.e. hangovers and indigestion.
After leaving the stomach, the food is passed on into:
THE SMALL INTESTINE
Stretched out, the small intestine would be around 17 feet long! It has two jobs – breakdown of food
and absorption of nutrients.
The digestive system produces digestive enzymes which go to work in the small intestine, breaking
food down. The nutrients released are then absorbed through the walls of the small intestine. To
ensure that as many nutrients as possible can be absorbed, the small intestine wall is covered with
small finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area available.
Production of digestive enzymes reduces with age, poor eating habits and stress. Poor digestion at
this stage will lead to poor absorption and fermentation, wind and bloating. Poor production of
digestive enzymes is also a cause of food intolerance.
NATURAL WAYS TO SUPPORT THE SMALL INTESTINE
DIGESTIVE ENZYME COMPLEX
Providing the enzymes which are missing, reducing the symptoms of poor digestion,
improving absorption and helping to reduce food intolerance. One to two tablets
should be taken with each meal initially, to ensure that all the food is properly digested.
Improvements should be seen quite quickly if this is the correct approach.
It would also be helpful to discuss the impact of poor eating habits and food choices on
digestion.
5
Upon leaving the small intestine, the food reaches its final journey, around:
THE LARGE INTESTINE
Also known as the bowel, the large intestine is basically responsible for the elimination of solid
waste – politely referred to as a stool. A healthy bowel is one that empties regularly enough to
ensure that toilet visits are a simple and comfortable process.
Fibre is important in bowel function as it helps to ensure smooth transit. The bowel should also
contain a large amount of friendly, lactic producing bacteria, as these play a vital role in the health of
the gut and the rest of the body.
The digestive system works like a domino rally – each step relies on the previous one being
set up correctly.
Failing to chew properly, or incomplete digestion of foods in the stomach and small intestine, will
have an impact on how well or effectively the bowel works.
NATURAL WAYS TO SUPPORT THE LARGE INTESTINE
. There are many things that can go wrong in the large intestine. Issues include:
• Irritable Bowel
• Inflammatory Bowel Diseases – Diverticulitis, Crohn’s, Colitis, Ulcerative Colitis
• Constipation & Diarrhoea
Suggestions for natural remedies to help will differ with each problem, so we will look at each in
turn.
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, CONSTIPATION AND DIARRHOEA
• Constipation is the failure to effectively and easily empty the bowel on a daily basis
• Diarrhoea is a regular loose and watery stool
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a broad-spectrum problem with many varying symptoms
including: Bloating; Wind; Pain; Spasm; Constipation; Diarrhoea & Alternating Bowel Habit.
The key to helping anyone suffering with IBS is to understand what the main symptoms are, so that
support can be targeted. The first thing to understand is bowel function and form. Many people
with IBS will have either constipation or diarrhoea as their main bowel symptom.
THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULARITY
Type 1 & 2 on the Bristol Stool Chart, no
matter how frequent, indicate constipation,
low fibre diet and dehydration.
Type 6 & 7, no matter how frequent, indicate
diarrhoea, fast track and probably poor
absorption and digestion. This is generally
NOT caused by too much fibre.
We should all be aiming for a perfect 4.
6
HELPING IBS AND CONSTIPATION
Constipation is the slow movement of waste through the bowel. The stool is hard and dry, and this
causes pain, discomfort and bloating. Symptoms will only be fully relieved if bowel function is
improved to give a daily, easy to pass movement.
NutriGUT-C®
Formulated specifically to help deal with constipation and IBS-C, which is irritable
bowel with constipation as the main symptom. NutriGUT-C® addresses all the main
causes of constipation, to provide complete relief. The active ingredients include:
Inulin – a soluble fibre with a pleasant taste. Fibre helps to improve bowel
regularity.
Magnesium – helps to improve muscle function. The bowel moves waste around via
muscular contraction, so using magnesium can help to improve the movement of
waste around the bowel.
Specific good bacteria – NutriGUT-C® contains B. animalis subsp. lactis, L. plantarum
and L. rhamnosus. This specific combination has been used in clinical trials and
shown to be effective in relieving constipation, bloating and digestive discomfort.
Prune Extract – a food well known for its ability to relieve constipation.
HELPING IBS AND DIARRHOEA
Diarrhoea occurs when waste passes through the intestines too quickly. Short term problems are
most often caused by a bacterial infection, such as food poisoning. Long term issues are largely
linked to inflammation in the bowel. The key to helping people with long term diarrhoea issues is to:
1) Try and deal with any potential bacteria imbalance, and 2) Reduce inflammation in the large
intestine.
NutriGUT-D®
Formulated specifically to help with both short and long-term diarrhoea and IBS-D –
irritable bowel with diarrhoea as its main symptom. NutriGUT-D® addresses all the
main issues associated with IBS and diarrhoea. The active ingredients include:
Saccharomyces Boulardii – a yeast shown to be effective at eliminating the
pathogens which cause infections. S. boulardii also helps to reduce diarrhoea.
Good bacteria blend – including L. casei, L. rhamnosus and S. thermophilus, all of
which have been shown to reduce both infective and long-term diarrhoea.
L-glutamine – an amino acid which helps to heal and soothe the membranes lining
the bowel.
Vitamin A – helps to support the membranes lining the bowel and supports the
immune system in fighting infection.
HELPING ALTERNATING DIARRHOEA AND CONSTIPATION
Some people suffer with alternating diarrhoea and constipation: This is usually caused by the
constipation building up and causing inflammation in the bowel, therefore leading to the diarrhoea.
Generally, it is best to deal with the root cause of the problem and address the constipation, to
break the cycle.
7
INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
Inflammatory bowel diseases involve chronic inflammation in all or part of the digestive tract. It
primarily includes problems like Colitis, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. People with an
inflammatory bowel problem generally suffer with frequent bouts of diarrhoea, pain, fatigue and
weight loss.
NutriGUT-D®
The ingredients and specific good bacteria included in NutriGUT-D® will all help to
alleviate some of the symptoms of inflammatory bowel problems, by soothing the
inflammation and reducing the bouts of diarrhoea.
The product could be used as and when required, or taken long-term.
As well as the organs of the digestive system, there is another very important
system housed in the gut – this is known as the microbiome.
THE MICROBIOME
Living in the gut of every human being are over 100 trillion bacteria.
These bacteria form what is known as the microbiome.
It is generally well known that the good bacteria in the gut support
digestive health. What is less well known is that these bacteria actually
have a tremendous impact on health and wellbeing, influencing not just
our digestion, but many other areas as well.
JOBS OF THE MICROBIOME
✓ Helps with weight regulation
✓ Protects against invaders
✓ Regulates the immune system
✓ Influences mood, memory and brain function
✓ Aids digestion and produces important metabolites
✓ Supports proper elimination
✓ Helps to regulate skin health
✓ Supports intimate health
The good bacteria of the microbiome can be killed off by:
✓ Antibiotics
✓ The Pill or HRT
✓ A high sugar diet
✓ Stress
✓ Artificial sweeteners
✓ Processed foods
8
The good bacteria of our microbiome can be encouraged and supported by:
✓ Fermented foods – kefir/ sauerkraut
✓ Live yoghurt
✓ Fibre
✓ Prebiotics – FOS & Inulin
✓ Probiotic supplements
PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENTS
Probiotic supplements contain good bacteria and are designed to support a healthy microbiome by
topping up the ‘good guys.’ Like people, probiotic supplements come in all shapes, sizes and
strengths.
Modern probiotic supplements will either be aimed at general health and wellbeing, providing a
broad spectrum of different good bacteria, or they could be targeted at specific areas of health.
These targeted products will contain specific bacteria shown to help with specific areas of health,
including skin health, intimate health, mood and memory.
Understanding how different probiotic supplements work, and how to use them, is important, so
that people can be guided towards the product which is most likely to help them.
NATURES AID BROAD SPECTRUM PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENTS

inflammation. These products then provide ideal ‘daily support’.
PROBIOTICS WHEN TRAVELLING
The development of holiday tummy can ruin any holiday. It has long been thought that taking a daily
supplement of good bacteria may help to prevent this problem. Research has backed up this
hypothesis and several strains, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and
Streptococcus thermophilus, have shown significant efficacy.
PRO-TRAVEL®
Pro-Travel® is a handy travel pack which provides 15 Natures Aid Pro-30 MAX®
capsules and 15 vitamin B1 tablets.
Taking a broad-spectrum, high strength probiotic has been shown to be
effective at keeping holiday tummy at bay, and Pro-30 MAX contains the specific
strains shown to be particularly effective.
Pro-Travel® pack also includes vitamin B1: Taking a daily vitamin B1 whilst
abroad is said to help keep biting insects at bay.
NATURES AID TARGETED PROBIOTIC FORMULATIONS
Why use targeted formulations?
There has been a great deal of research into the different roles played by the bacteria found in the
human microbiome. Some affect brain function, whilst others impact skin or digestive health. This
means that, for certain health concerns, specific formulations can be created.
Nutrients can also be added to these formulations, to compliment the effects and benefits of the
chosen probiotic strains and thus create all-in-one products for today’s busy lives.
10
PROBIOTICS FOR DIGESTIVE HEALTH
Natures Aid probiotic formulations for digestive health have largely been covered, under the large
intestine heading, earlier in this workbook. We have two main formulations: NutriGUT-C® for
constipation-based issues, and NutriGUT-D® for problems with diarrhoea.
NutriGUT-C®
NutriGUT-C® uses 3 specific strains – Bifidobacteria animalis subsp. lactis, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus rhamnosus – which have been shown to effectively reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. As well as 15 billion of these chosen bacteria, the product also contains: Inulin – a source of fibre, to help alleviate constipation. Magnesium – to improve the muscle contractions in the bowel, making it easier to
go to the toilet.
Prune extract – well known for its benefits in constipation.
NutriGUT-D®
NutriGUT-D® uses 3 specific bacteria – Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Streptococcus thermophilus – combined with a yeast called saccharomyces boulardii. These ingredients have all been shown to effectively reduce inflammation, infection and diarrhoea. As well as 5 billion S. boulardii and 10 billion good bacteria, NutriGUT-D® also contains: L-glutamine - to heal and protect the bowel wall.
Vitamin A - to help fight any infections.
Perilla extract – shown to reduce inflammation and pain in the bowel.
PROBIOTICS IN INTIMATE HEALTH
It is not just the gut that plays host to a wealth of good bacteria. A healthy vagina should also
contain high levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. These bacteria help to create a healthy pH
level and keep pathogenic bacteria under control. This means that using probiotic supplements can
help support issues like thrush and bacterial vaginosis.
These products can be used alongside conventional treatment, and can be used long-term by people
who have suffered recurrent infections.
PRO-INTIMATE®
Pro-INTIMATE® uses bacteria found in the vagina, and which help to support the health of this area. These bacteria – Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacteria animalis subsp. lactis – have all been shown to effectively treat and prevent thrush and bacterial vaginosis. As well as these bacteria, Pro-INTIMATE® also contains: Vitamin B2 – which supports the mucous membranes of the vagina.
Zinc – which supports normal function of the immune system to fight infection.
Vitamin B6 – to help with hormonal balance.
11
PRO-INTIMUM®
Hormonal changes in pregnancy can lead to alterations in the vaginal flora: As a
result, up to 75% of pregnant women will suffer from thrush in their last
trimester. However, they are unable to use most over the counter treatments.
Pro-IntiMUM® is a safe, natural treatment for intimate health during pregnancy.
Pro-IntiMUM® utilises bacteria which have been specifically researched for their safety and efficacy during pregnancy. The strains chosen for this formulation – Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus reuteri – have been shown to support intimate and digestive health during pregnancy.
There is also evidence that taking this sort of probiotic supplement can enhance the health of mother and child. The additional ingredients in Pro-IntiMUM are: Vitamin B2 – which supports the mucous membranes lining the vagina. Zinc – which supports normal fertility and reproduction.
PROBIOTICS FOR BRAIN HEALTH
Who hasn’t experienced ‘butterflies in the stomach’ when exposed to stress? Or based a decision on
a ‘gut feeling’? The gut and the brain are intricately connected. They are linked to each other by the
Vagus nerve, which works like a busy telephone line, sending signals back and forth between the
brain and the gut. The bacteria in the gut are responsible for producing several important brain
chemicals, including: Dopamine (important for motivation); Serotonin (keeps us happy); and GABA
(promotes calm). Much research has been carried out in recent years showing that certain good
bacteria can influence stress, anxiety and depression.
PRO-COGNITIV®
Pro-Cognitiv® is aimed at people wanting some extra support for mood and
memory. People with busy and stressful lives can become forgetful, anxious
and low. Pro-Cognitiv® could also be used by people who are on medication for
anxiety or depression and are seeking additional support.
The good bacteria used in Pro-Cognitiv® – Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacteria bifidum – have all been shown to have a beneficial effect on mood and memory. Pro-Cognitiv® combines these bacteria with:
Vitamin B5 – which supports mental performance and energy production. Vitamin B1, Niacin, and B2 - which support the nervous system. Vitamin B6, B12 and Folic acid – which reduce homocysteine. High homocysteine has been linked to increased depression and problems with memory. Magnesium – which supports the muscles and the nervous system.
12
PROBIOTICS FOR SKIN HEALTH
A link between the skin and the health of the gut is not new: Researchers as far back as 1930
suspected a link between gut health and skin health. Modern research has confirmed the
importance of this relationship. This means that good bacteria could be helpful in reducing the
severity of all manner of skin complaints. The good bacteria of the microbiome can prevent the
growth of bad bacteria on the skin, which in turn can help to deal with problems such as acne,
eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
PRO-DERMA®
Pro-Derma® targets the link between the gut and the skin and can be used to
support people with all skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis and
rosacea. It combines specific bacteria, which have been shown to effectively
control skin pathogens, with nutrients which are well known for their beneficial
effect on the health of the skin.
The good bacteria chosen for Pro-Derma® – Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus - have all been extensively
researched for their ability to suppress pathogenic skin bacteria. Pro-Derma® also contains: Zinc and Vitamin A – which support skin health and help to reduce the symptoms of acne, eczema and psoriasis. Copper – which helps to restore normal skin pigmentation (colour), so helping with issues like rosacea. Chromium – to balance blood sugar levels, as erratic blood sugars have been shown to aggravate issues like acne and eczema. Choline – to support liver health. In natural medicine, supporting the liver is thought to have benefits for all skin complaints.
IN CONCLUSION
The digestive system is at the root of many common health concerns, and there is a vast array of
different natural remedies which can help. The microbiome plays a role not just in digestive health,
but also in skin health, brain health, intimate health, immune health, mood and memory. Thus,
supporting a healthy digestion and a strong microbiome could have far reaching benefits in terms of
health and wellbeing.
