Mountains of Sandstone

long before my eyes first saw the snowy peaks of mountain giants, rising high above the surrounding landscape, suggesting a wall of clouds before anything real, i started devouring the romance of the czech sandstones, which were not thousands of miles distant, but were actually right on my doorstep. i owe this lucky accident to my parents, who raised me in the czech basin, where there is an exceptional wealth of sandstone rocks. At a young age, i found a climbing guide in my dad‘s library where, over yellowed leaves, my eager fingers crossed feet first, eagerly awaiting adventure.

So i will not forget one autumn day, when the dense morning fog slowly dissolved and left a pungent chill. The sun began to warm the rocks. i climbed to the top of Tyr s Tower with its fabulous views of the lazy meanders of the elbe river through a narrow valley continuing on into Germany. Finally, i had climbed my first route in the elbe river Valley. At that time, i was a beautiful fourteen years old, and i believed i was now a bloke who had seen something of the world. This thought was actually true as this climbing route, while beautiful, was also difficult both physically and mentally. Just imagine: to the right of the route „Big Wall“ in the center of the wall, 30 meters below the overhang lies the first ring. Securing the slings there is no hit parade and then you have your first Viiib climb behind you. Then follows an overhang section of iXc and sections over two rings to the top of an 80 meter massive known as the president. You could say that the route s name „The meaning of Deprivation“ from 1984 is entirely appropriate, since it had to be a figment of someone s sick brain; someone who was bored with life. With this increasing confidence, new and more possibilities opened up.

This and many other routes do not seem crazy to me today, but rather belong to the treasury indicative of human skills and the desire to know more. i have managed to survive over two decades since that autumn day, and a new generation of climbers has arrived, who have not asked and climbed over the backs of older climbers,

and are now pressing their indelible new achievements on the landscape. That is one reason that even today the rocks on both sides of the elbe river Valley between Děčín and hřensko have not lost an inch of their atmosphere. Why is that? Bright, pioneers set a high bar, which has been continually lifted and carried away. Another reason is because of the landscape of the terrain, which makes it possible for visitors to enjoy themselves right under the rocks. The climbers, including me, have more room to enjoy and relax all year round, which is hard to find in other areas of sandstone rocks. on the other hand, when you meet someone, they are mostly familiar faces, who have come under the same pretext of „enjoying the rocks.“

i hope that for those who are hesitant as i was years ago, i offer a little courage and for those who know do not say anything, just maybe, we will meet in the rocks.

For more than ten years, ondra has been devoting his time to almost all the different climbing disciplines. During the winter, you can find him with a bouldering crash pad on his back or climbing somewhere warm in the world, and, over the sum-mer, you can meet him on the sandstone cliffs in the czech re-public or in the Alps. in his years of climbing, he has had many experiences and climbed many difficult routes from ones on czech sandstones to the big walls of the Alps and beyond. Together with edita Vopatova, he offers courses in climbing - introducing participants to the beauty of climbing. ondra is a versatile climber, who has completed over 500 routes greater than 8a, dozens of first ascents in the sandstones Xa – Xib, and development of more than 1500 bouldering routes in northern Bohemia up to the 8A difficulty.

edita is a talented climber from North Bohemia, who started climbing early in her childhood in the elbe Sandstone region. Sport climbing has become her life; she now spends a lot of time climbing around the world. Winters she spends training on indoor walls, and the rest of the year she is on the rocks. She has a number of nice climbs on rocks and success in competiti-ons. At only 19 years old, she is already a well-regarded figure in the czech climbing world.
