Project Info:
This was a material study and design-build project that was to produce a stool/chair no larger than 2’ x 2’. Each person was given a certain material and told to study a certain artist,
designer, company, etc that would become the main influence for the project. It would then be designed and built full-scale using detailed construction drawings.

Design Description:
Tasked to design in sheet metal with the artist Richard Serra for inspiration, I found that I was intrigued by the way he could make a heavy material seem light and graceful. I tried to create the same feeling of lightness by mimicking his fluid forms.
I was also inspired by how his sculptures defined the space around them, and designed my stool to control the user’s experience by leading them to sit in a certain way.

This project was to be designed for a substandard lot in Lawrence, Kansas. Because the buildable area was only 25’ x 30’ and the maximum square footage was 1,500, the house became a literal tower, and the integration of various built-
ins and multi-use objects was required. The lot was located by the river and thus, maximizing the view to the south was important to the design.

Design Description:
I organized the different aspects of the home into three distinct areas and then placed them into the three stacked boxes that make up the design:
- Utilities and project use are on the first floor.
- The kitchen, living room, and dining room are on the second floor.
- The bedroom, bathroom and home office are on the third floor.
There are two outdoor living spaces that allow for great views of the river. One is on the second floor for outdoor dining while the other is a more private outdoor deck off the bedroom on the third floor.

KANSAS CITY OPERA HOUSE
Project Info:
This was a project that was to design an opera house for Kansas City. It would be located next to the existing 1926 structure, which would be converted back to a drama theatre.
The new 1,200 seat building was to take up the rest of the block and include an outdoor plaza and special VIP sections along with the standard opera amenities.

Design Description:
This design began with the decision to connect the new opera house to the existing Lyric Theater which was achieved through the design of the metal and glass spine. The spine is then mirrored to form the front plaza area, creating an axis into the main lobby. The heavy stone façade of the Lyric is contrasted by the light glass façade of the Opera House.
This modern facade is then offset by a more traditional auditorium with warm red seats and curtains along with undulating walls and ceiling panels of rich wood.
My contributions to the group included work in research and design as well as production of the section and auditorium 3D model and auditorium renderings.

EARLY MODELS
Project Info: This was a project that was to design a mobile unit that would be taken to other countries to provide medical care or emergency services. The unit would have to contain all the equipment, tools and supplies necessary for the doctors to do their work, as well as adequate space for procedures
and patient comfort. My group programmed our unit for use in Honduras by a volunteer preventive care medical team. Due to the rough terrain of the undeveloped and often nonexistent roads in that country, many people in rural areas have no access to medical care.

Design Description:
The unit is built on a Dodge Ram chassis and it’s two side walls open to form floors, tripling the original area for inclusion of two exam rooms, one dental exam room and a lab. Aluminum-framed walls are put in place and canvas covers are snapped on to provide privacy but allow for the movement of air. Lightweight stairs and ramps follow. The unit is then powered by a gas generator. All necessary supplies and equipment fit into the unit when it is closed up and moved to a different location.
My contribution to the group included work in research and design as well as production of the electrical and exploded axonometrics, volume studies, setup animations, and the volume plan.

Project Info:
This was a project whose program called for a mobile gathering unit that could be easily transported and set in place in a parallel parking spot (roughly 10’ x 20’). The unit would be placed in an urban environment and would always stand in connection to a certain existing service - in our case,
a coffee shop. It would serve as a gathering place for people of the community as well as an additional seating area for the coffee shop. My contributions to the group included work in research and design as well as production of the renderings, plans, and sections.

Early Interaction Sketch On-site across from coffee shopDesign Description:
There are three distinct seating areas that help to define the space in this 10’ x 20’ unit. The standing bar area is a lively space meant for those who just want a quick cup. The table area is large and provides seating for those who will be utilizing the space for a while: reading papers, having a meeting etc. The lounge area is a more quiet and secluded space meant for intimate conversation and long stays.
The materiality reflects the essence of coffee: the rigid steel frame is wrapped in burlap and then covered with a dark wood to bring a feeling of warmth and richness. The layered roof panels create a quality of light that protects the user from glaring sunlight and rain but still allows for connection to the outside.
Hinged steel structures on tracks are adjusted independently to level off the unit when it is on-site.

Project Info:The clients provided pictures of a house to give the firm an idea of what they were looking for. They had purchased land with an existing garage and wanted to integrate it with the new house. I located plans for the garage in city records,
drew up plans for the house and connected them with a 4’ space between the existing and new foundations. I drew all of the construction documents and completed all revisions for this project.

Project Info: This project came from a need for more storage space in the office. I started to notice an increase in clutter and deduced that we had inadequate storage for the new supplies and equipment we had recently acquired. As well, the office had just begun to experiment with hot desking, so employees no longer had assigned desks on which to store their things.
To solve this, I proposed a storage room expansion and reorganization. With only Sketchup at my disposal, I designed the space, vetted and chose the contractor, coordinated with building management, and was the main contact for the project.

Design Description:

The existing storage room (in orange at bottom right) was blocked in on all sides, preventing expansion. The entryway (in dotted teal at bottom right) was larger than necessary, but the glass front made it difficult to expand the storage room without modifying it in some way, either by applying an translucent coating or replacing it with a wall. Neither of these were appropriate solutions for the main entrance of the business, as they’d shrink hallway presence and make the entryway feel constricting.
Thus I proposed that we extend the storage room (in purple at bottom right) into the entryway, leaving a 2.5 foot space between the new wall and the glass. This space would create a “storefront” (see top image) where we could mount a digital display to show our work and greet guests, while engaging with passersby.
After the room was built, I created a new, more intuitive organization system for the supplies. Each employee had a “locker” for their personal belongings along with long-term storage for files and other important work. The general office supplies were then put into bins or drawers that were labeled with a letter and number that corresponded to a directory.
