Our long term objectives are: To provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children so that they can realize their dream of getting a school leaving certificate and contributing to the development and growth of the society in general and their families in particular.

The main purposes of the Trust are: To run unique schools ASK (Ananya Shikshana Kendra) that makes learning fun, relevant and meaningful for underprivileged children who are excluded from mainstream schools. To provide a platform ACT (Ananya Centre for Teachers) where people working with such children can meet to share experiences and ideas and create innovative teaching methods.

Volunteer Tasks & Role (including indicative working hours)

Teaching English, and other activities like plays, theatre, drawing, Painting, Games etc.

The volunteer should have a willingness to teach children and work towards the overall

development of poor children between the ages of 8 – 18.

Who can help children in their school assignments, homework, Special coaching for Mathematics, Science and other subjects on a regular basis.

ANANYA was started in March 1998, by a group of individuals concerned about the dearth of schools that provide relevant and meaningful education for the underprivileged children in and around Bangalore city. Even though the Indian constitution guarantees free and compulsory education to all children up to the age of 14, there are no schools that the poor can choose from. Either the schools are very good, but expensive or therefore beyond the reach of the underprivileged, or they are free but have poor physical facilities and offer a standard curriculum which is dull and boring. Most children, who drop out of school, do so because the schools do not cater to their special needs. Education in such critical context has no meaning or relevance to these children. It does not provide them with the required skills to overcome the social traumas or the emotional and physical hardships they face everyday.

Name of Host Placement: Deshpande Foundation Brief Placement Description

Main Aims and Activities (brief description of socio-economic context and of target groups served by the organisation)

Our approach is not merely solving a problem but building an ecosystem that enables ideas and entrepreneurs to complement each other for a large impact. We started the Hubli Sandbox to support mission-driven individuals to come up with sustainable and scalable enterprises having social and economic impact. The Sandbox is engaged in creating a pool of critical problem solvers who can find innovative solutions in different areas, and thereby address the challenges of the local community like poverty, income inequality, and lack of access to basic facilities.

Many young people in India's rural and semi-urban areas have extraordinary capabilities and entrepreneurial skills. Through the Sandbox's bottom-up approach, DF India equips them with necessary skills, provides those grants and infrastructure to experiment, puts them through the right networks, and maximizes their potential by constantly engaging them. The Sandbox environment is the combination of the execution excellence of for-profits and the compassion of non-profits.

A number of educational and mentorship initiatives-LEAD, Sandbox Start-ups and Grant making - that run simultaneously in the Sandbox ecosystem are enabling local youth, entrepreneurs and agripreneurs to be the catalysts of social change. Our efforts have started bearing fruits in the Hubli Sandbox area in Northwest Karnataka. We have touched the lives of many with our differentiated approach and constructive interventions in livelihood, health, agriculture and education.

Jnanasagara Public School is an initiative of Sanjay Vidya Kendra (registered Society) whose primary objective is to provide quality education for the rural masses. The Society itself was established in 1980s and has successfully run a polytechnic college for the last 3 decades. Jnanasagara Public School was established and operational in 2017 and is aimed to be affiliated to the CBSE. Currently managing pre-primary and primary education n, Jnanasagara has staff strength of 11 employees.

With the aim of bringing quality, up-to-date educational practices to the people of Sagara, rather than bringing in teaching faculty from outside this region, we find it more purposeful to tap into the regional talent as they can connect with the students better. But with the local resources English not being their language of communication, laying the foundation for a school with English as the medium of instruction becomes quite a challenge. Also the lack of exposure to the new levels of teaching practices followed in cities and elsewhere, whose focus has moved from scholastic to holistic methodologies, it is important that our teaching faculty be given a chance to be exposed to such opportunities. Volunteers who join us will serve a dual purpose – raise the quality of communication amongst teachers and open up their minds to more creative thought processes.

The volunteer will primarily work alongside the class teacher in conducting the daily lessons and provide their own input in terms of being more holistic in the teaching methods. They can also involve the children in more nature based experiences and outdoor activities in the learning process. Tasks will be on a daily basis and can be decided in conjunction with the teaching faculty. The output of their efforts should provide for a more holistic development of the child.
