TRANSCRIPT
Work is well underway on our £18million Transporting Bedford project, which is set to free up traffic on Bedford’s busiest roads, boost our economy and revitalise our environment.
Update Autumn 2019
The Transporting Bedford project represents the largest ever investment in the town’s roads and is funded jointly by Bedford Borough Council and through the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) Local Growth Fund.
Manton LaneOver the summer, work has been completed to construct a retaining wall alongside the playing fields on Manton Lane so the road can be widened. A number of underground utility services have been diverted and new drainage systems are being installed. Over the next few weeks, this section of road widening will be complete and a new traffic light junction will be built at the entrance to Bedford Modern School. Work has also started to widen the north side of Manton Lane on the corner of Clapham Road. The works in this area are expected to be completed before Easter 2020.
Britannia Road Work started immediately after the schools broke up for summer, to widen the road and improve the junctions on Britannia Road. There are a large number of underground pipes and cables that need to be relocated to enable widening works to be completed. This project is due to be completed before Easter 2020.

REFLECTIONS OF
BEDFORD SCULPTURE
BENCHBENCH
LIM

High Street and St Paul’s Square redevelopment.Bedford is a unique place. With a beautiful river running through our town, a strong presence of independent shops, and new businesses opening. Bedford is a place to come to shop, enjoy events, culture, heritage, our local markets and much, much more. Next summer a major redevelopment of the High Street will make our county town even more of a destination.
The drawing above shows the proposed new layout for the High Street.
Pavements will be widened to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and shoppers
New loading and short stay parking bays will be introduced
A 20mph speed limit will be in place – enforced by average speed cameras - improving air quality and reducing traffic
High quality York paving and granite kerbstones will be used
No changes will be made to bus stops on St Paul’s Square
Work is planned to start on site after the Bedford River Festival in 2020. More details can be seen at www.bedford.gov.uk/Transporting Bedford
To complement the Transporting Bedford 2020 work the Council has been awarded funding to become a High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), focusing on the High Street and surrounding roads. In addition, a wider town centre consultation has recently been undertaken to help develop a town centre plan. Further details of both the HSHAZ and town centre plan will be available in the new year. Artist Impression
Existing access to the High Street to be narrowed, reducing pedestrian crossing distance and carriageway from two lanes to one lane
Yorkstone Flag paving laid throughout High Street pavements
High Street carriageway width reduced to 4m to allow for single lane traffic flow
Removal of pedestrian guardrail and new kerb alignment providing wider pavements
New junction arrangement to provide a designated left turn out of Embankment
St Paul’s Square pedestrian area improvements undertaken in summer 2018
New loading and short term parking bays defined with granite sets and kerbing
Reduction of lane widths around junction creating wider pavements
New average speed cameras to be installed along the High Street, enforcing 20mph speed limit
New loading and short term parking bays

Network Rail Works at Bromham Road Rail BridgeNetwork Rail is on schedule to demolish the old road bridge in October, they have advised that they expect that all their works will be completed and the road reopened by April 2020.
A6 near Wilstead A stretch of the A6 past Wilstead is being rebuilt, having become too dangerous for normal road use. This road was originally built by the Government in the 1970s with a concrete foundation, which has begun to collapse. Bedford Borough Council funded project to rebuild the road is currently on site.
Manton Lane Phase 2 Further work will take place at Manton Lane and Clapham Road once Network Rail has completed its work at Bromham Road. Our work will see the roundabout at the Manton Lane / Clapham Road enlarged and traffic signals installed. Further improvement works will also be carried out to the traffic signals at Sainsbury’s and the roundabout at Great Ouse Way.
Ampthill RoadThe design of a scheme for the Ampthill Road corridor is nearly complete. Improvement works will see the construction of a new cycle / pedestrian bridge over the Bedford - Bletchley railway and widening of Ampthill Road to ease the flow of traffic. We will also introduce new technology such as electronic road signs, monitoring equipment and smarter traffic signals - all aimed at cutting congestion and improving journey times. We plan to publish more details of our proposals later this year.
Bromham Road / Shakespeare Road / Ashburnham Road We have been looking at options to improve this junction, creating more space for traffic and improving road safety. Having carried out detailed analysis and listening to feedback from residents and road users we will now not be making large scale changes to the junction. We will be carrying out works that make it easier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians to use the junction by introducing more zebra crossings and shared use cycle / pedestrian routes.

We aim to carry out works to improve the road network at times when traffic is quietest. However we apologise for any disruption caused as we work to cut congestion and improve our roads.
