Work for Mr Page

• Complete all the tasks in the yellow boxes, and any that are in a yellow boxes with the green outside edge

• Use sketches and full sentences where needed

Living PhotographsStep into one of the

photographs. Focus on a particular person featured and imagine what the person might be thinking, how do they feel,

what are they going to do?

LEDC v MEDC?

• LEDC = What does this stand for?• Less Economically Developed Countries• Countries like this include…….and I would expect

them ……. (describe what they would be like)

• MEDC = What does this stand for?• More Economically Developed Countries• Countries like this include…….and I would expect

them ……. (describe what they would be like)

• Water harvestingLots of small shallow holes are dug, surrounded by stones to trap water when it rains. You plant crops in these holes as the soli is wetter

• Animal welfareTeach people how to look after their animals so less will die. Also teach them what animals will best survive in a very dry environment

• CoppicingChopping a tree down to about 30cm so lots of smaller branches will grow out. These can then be cut for fuel of to make houses. The stumpy trees also protect the ground and the tree continues to grow needing less water

• Bund (small walls)

Built to stop soil from blowing away and trap water flowing over the ground giving it time to soak in to the ground

Write a sentence to say how two of these methods helps people survive a drought…you can include a sketch

Discuss in pairs: How can people in LEDCs cope with the problems of drought?People need to do things to save and collect water, and also minimise water loss….and it needs to use local materials be easy to do and VERY cheap.

You live in an LEDC….how do you collect as much water as you can and minimise waste

• Discuss ideas…focus on one…sketch it out and explain how it works

Objective: to understand how people in LEDCs can manage their drought situations.

Managing drought and desertification in LEDCs…Mali and Niger

– Tree planting schemes– Building small rock dams– Collecting rainwater from the roofs of

buildings– Building terraces on steeper slopes– Building stone lines on gentle slopes– Planting grass strips along the very gentle

slopes• Select two of the 6 methods listed to

manage desertification and drought…that you think would be the best

• Using sketches…explain why they would work so well in an LEDC like Mali…remember Mali is a VERY poor country

Use the ideas on the next slide to help

– Tree planting schemes– Building small rock dams– Collecting rainwater from the roofs of

buildings– Building terraces on steeper slopes– Building stone lines on gentle slopes– Planting grass strips along the very

gentle slopes

• Select three of the 6 methods listed to manage desertification and drought…that you think would be the best

• Using sketches…explain why they would work so well in an LEDC like Mali

• Explain why strategies in LECDs need to be so simple compared to MEDCs
