Work Experience

Goals

• Provide you with the opportunity to test tentative career choices

• Improve your future employment opportunities • Help you attain an ASBA in Years 11 and 12, or an

apprenticeship after Year 12.• Allow you to participate in your own career development• Increase your understanding of yourselves and the many

influences on your career development.

Process1. Complete a WH & S Training course.

2. Apply through the Careers/VET Coordinator requesting work experience.

Work Experience placements must fit in with your career development plan.There are some restrictions on occupations available for work experience. These are usually to do with safety or privacy.

Exclusions and Conditions

Some Exclusions:• High Risk construction – traffic, mobile plant• Demolition work other than simple stripping of walls• Working on rooves or in roof cavities• Service of alcohol• Most sporting activities• Travelling in helicopters, private jets, unregistered vehicles,

watercraft more than 20m in length

Special Permission Required:• Big animals• There are others - discuss with Ms Stapper

Process

3. Collect a Work Experience Pack from the Careers/VET Coordinator.

(Pack includes letter for parents, copy of school insurance, Work Experience 4 Way Agreement From, Employer’s Guide to workplace Learning)

4. Contact an employer to request work experience. Make an appointment to take the necessary form to the employer to be signed.

The Careers/VET Coordinator may be able to assist in this process but you will still be required to make the phone call and visit the employer before you go.

5. You, your parent and the employer sign the Work Experience Agreement Form.

6. Return the signed form to the Careers/VET Coordinator two weeks before the work experience begins.

All your teachers, your Year Coordinator and the Executive of the College will be informed and given time to comment on the appropriateness of your application.

Process

7. Discuss how you will catch up on any work missed with your teachers well before your Work Experience.

8. Have a pre work experience visit with the Careers Coordinator to finalise arrangements and ensure you understand your obligations whilst on work experience.

Someone from the college will visit you during work experience. If you have any concerns you can phone the Careers Coordinator to discuss the issue.

9. Complete the Work Experience Log Book and return to see the Careers/VET Coordinator when you return to College.

10. Contact the employer to thank them for having you.
