Steps to a Practicum
1. Secure a company commitment
a) Work with CS to identify target companies
b) Train with CS on packaging and selling the value
proposition of a Practicum
2. Apply with Practicum Manager
3. Get CPT status approved (if applicable)
4. Complete Practicum Course
1. Secure a Company
Commitment
How??
• No different than finding a job
– Often projects work well
– Solve a problem for a company
– Leverage CS resources and online search tools
• Career Services workshops
– Securing a Practicum – March, April & May
– Optimizing a Practicum – June, July & August
2: Apply with Practicum Manager
Contact our Practicum Manager
– San Francisco:
Assoc. Dean Naomi Elvove,
– Submit an internship application (available in
January, due May 1 or June 19)
– Requires details of your learning objectives
3. Get CP Status Approved
• Receive work authorization approval from Visas and
Compliance following approval from Academics before you
start working
• You will receive a new I-20 from with your CPT company
information
• CPT is authorized for one company and is non-transferrable
• Partaking in unauthorized work can affect future OPT and
visa applications – working without a new I-20 with CPT
approval would result in SEVIS termination.
Step 4: Complete Your
Practicum Course
• Course is 3 credits.
• Grades are Pass/Fail based on projects, reports, or
other work products
• These credits do not count towards graduation
– This does not replace another elective
– A Fail will affect your GPA
• You can’t miss class because of a practicum.
Practicum vs. Rotation
• Difficult to rotate and do a Practicum
– See the Visas and Compliance team
– Potentially works between Boston and SF
• Work with your CS Advisor to consider the benefits and
tradeoffs, for example:
– Dubai is a good job market with work visas for international
students
– EU Citizens may want to rotate to London to explore jobs in
the UK or elsewhere in Europe
– Students interested in working in Boston may want to rotate
to Boston to start networking and their job search
Summary of Eligibility
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
• Not on any form of probation
• Approved internship application
• Approved CPT or AT work authorization by Visas
and Compliance (F-1 and J-1 students only)
Action Plan
1. Work with CS to plan your overall job strategy
2. If you want to pursue a Practicum, develop a
personal marketing plan (you source your own
practicum).
3. Once you secure one, work with the Academic
Practicum Manager and apply prior to May 1 for
Mod D (or D and E) or June 19 (Module E only).
