Words of Wisdom Series at a Glance for Elevate

About this Series:

How many words do you use each day? If you’re like most people, it’s about 16,000. Some of those words are quiet, some are loud, some are happy, some are sad, some don’t mean much, and some

may be life-changing. In this series, we’ll discover four words that, when used wisely, can make a

huge difference in our lives.

Key Verse:

Proverbs 14:8- People are wise and understanding when they think about the way they live.

Words of Wisdom Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued)

Lesson 1: Yes

One day, God talked to Noah about a wild plan. A plan that included a flood, a gigantic boat, and a

whole bunch of animals. It may have seemed crazy to others, but Noah knew that when something

is God’s plan, it’s always wise to say “Yes.” This week, we’ll be discovering how saying “Yes” can change our lives, too.

Lesson 2: No

Saying “No” doesn’t sound like much fun, but it’s one of the wisest words we can use. This week,

we’ll hear how a man named Zerubbabel used the power of saying “No” to follow God and do

something amazing.

Lesson 3: Help

Asking for help can be hard. When things go wrong, sometimes we want to fix them ourselves.

Sometimes we get stuck in tough situations that could be so much better if we simply said “Help.”

This week, we’ll find out how every one of us can get help when we need it.

Lesson 4: Thanks

When Jesus healed ten men who had a disease called leprosy, all of them probably danced,

celebrated, and shouted for joy. Only one of them, however, learned that being healed was only the

beginning. He discovered that Jesus had much more for him, all by choosing to say “Thanks.”

Opening Song and Welcome 1:00 Welcome everyone, let’s get started! Throw away your popcorn and find a place to sit! Welcome, everyone! My name is __________. I am super excited to be with you today. We have so many awesome things ahead. We’ve got fun activities to play, stories to hear, and songs to sing. Let’s get going!

Team Time 14:00

We’re in a series titled “Words of Wisdom.” Did you know that most people say about 16 thousand words every day? The words we choose make a huge difference in our lives, so it’s important to use them wisely. Today, we’re going to talk about a word we sometimes love, and sometimes don’t like at all. That word is “No,” and when we use it wisely, it can make a big difference. Let’s get started with a game called “Out of the Book.”

In this game, I’m going to show you a saying. Your group will have to guess whether it is something written in the Bible, or if it’s from somewhere else. If you think it’s from the Bible, you’ll go to the side that says “In the Book,” and if you think it’s not, you’ll go to the side that says “Out of the Book.” Let’s give it a try! Go ahead and find your groups, and then I’ll get us started.

Ready, everyone? Let’s try the first phrase!

The first phrase is: “Do to others what you want them to do to you.” Is that in the Bible, or Out of the Book? Pick your side and head there now. Let’s find out the answer!

The answer is… In the Book! That’s something Jesus says in the Bible. Let’s try another one.

“On the eighth day, God created kittens.” Is that a verse from the Bible? Pick your side! Let’s find out if you’re right!

That’s not in the Bible, though God did make kittens, too! Let’s try again!

God works in mysterious ways. Is that in the Book, or Out of the Book? Choose your answer! Let’s find out if you’re right!

If you guessed “Out of the Book,” you are right! That’s just something people say, it’s not written in the Bible. What’s next?

“So the sun stood still and the moon stopped.” Is that a verse in the Bible? Make your guess! Let’s see what the answer is!

That is in the Bible! It’s a cool story you can read in the book of Joshua. The next one is about Joshua, too. Let’s find out what it is!

“Joshua was now very old. The Lord said to him, ‘You are very old.’” Is that in the Bible, or did we just make it up? Make your guess with your group! Let’s find out if you’re right!

That is in the Bible. God sure told Joshua the truth. Let’s see what’s next.

“The lion will lie down with the lamb.” Is that written in the Bible? Make your guess! Let’s find out!

It’s not! It sounds like a Bible verse, but isn’t in there. Let’s try one more.

“Eutychus (you-tih-kuss) was sitting in a window. He sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on.” Is this story about a boy falling asleep while someone was preaching in the Bible, or is it from somewhere else? Make your guess! Let’s find out.

It’s in the Bible! You might get tired, too, if you had to listen to someone talk until after midnight. Great job everyone, you can come back to the middle and sit down!

These are funny examples, but it can be tough to know what’s in the Bible sometimes. That’s important, because the Bible has a lot of things God wants us to know, that can help us say yes to good things, and no to things that can hurt us. We’ll find out how in a few minutes, but first, let’s answer a question of the day!

What’s the best thing you’ve learned in the last week? It could be from school, something interesting you found, or just an awesome fact. Go ahead and talk about that with a couple people near you.

Do This: Give kids about thirty seconds to talk with each other, then move on.

There are so many amazing things we can learn! Today, we’re learning how we can use the word “no” wisely. I bet Rue and the Source team can help us out. Let’s find out what they’re up to today.

In your groups, you’ll get to talk about what choice you think they should make! You can head to your group flags now, and I’ll see you in a couple minutes.

Group Time 15:00

Do This: Make sure each kid finds their group. Help group leaders if there is a need. Encourage kids as they work to answer the question. Know This: This is a time for kids to search for answers in the Bible, and see how they can use the Bible to investigate and better understand life. This time is designed for kids to interact and deepen their understanding. They won’t get all the answers, but allow them to question and discover as much as possible. Be ready to support group leaders in any way needed.

Do This: Give the groups a warning about one minute before this time is up.

Alright, you can come back to the middle and find a spot to sit. Let’s find out what happens to the Source team!

It’s wise to say “no” sometimes, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Application 6:00 What I want you to know today is this.

Saying no can be a wise choice. When we’re in a bad situation, or others want us to do something we know is wrong, just saying “no” can be one of the wisest things to do. We usually know when to say “no,” but it’s tough to actually do it. When our friends want to make unwise choices, or our brothers and sisters disobey our parents, we might just go along with it. Then later, we wonder “Why did I do that?” It’s tough to say no sometimes. So how do we say “no” when we need to? Like Rue said, one of the best ways is to practice.

Here’s what I mean. Saying “no” when our friends are doing something we know is wrong, or saying “no” to something fun when we need to do homework, those can feel like big obstacles, even like we’re trying to get over a high jump. If you were practicing for the high jump, you would jump, over and over again, but that’s not all. Did you know, researchers have found that one of the best ways to practice jumping, other than actually going out and jumping, is to just think through the whole jump in your mind? Athletes can make themselves better, just by walking through their jump over and over in their minds.

Worship 8:00

What does that have to do with us and saying no? Here you go. You don’t have to wait until your friends are asking you to do something wrong to practice saying no.

We have to prepare to make wise choices. If we practice what we’ll say and do ahead of time, we can be ready to make a wise choice when we need to. So, if you know your friends might want to watch an inappropriate movie, think about how you could say no, or how you could ask to watch a different one. Imagine yourself saying “I don’t really want to watch that one, let’s pick a different movie.” Or “My parents wouldn’t like it if I watched that one, let’s pick another one.” You don’t have to wait until you get home and you’re looking back and forth between your video games and your homework, trying to decide. You can practice making the wise choice ahead of time and think through it. Before you get home, think through the night, and tell yourself “I’ll finish my homework before playing games.” You can do this for whatever you might need to say “no” to. If you know someone wants you to cheat, lie, or make fun of someone else, imagine how you’ll say no. Practicing will make it way easier to make the wise choice. There’s one more thing you can do, too. Share your plan with someone, especially if it’s going to be difficult. Talk to your parents about it, or if you need to, your group leader would be glad to listen to you and help you make a wise choice, too. Whatever decisions you have to make, God is there with you, too. He cares about the things you’re going through, so talk to Him about it, too! We’re going to spend some time talking and singing to God next, as we worship!

Worship is what we call it when we show love for God, sometimes by praying, talking about Him, or singing. Right now, we’re going to worship by singing about how no matter what happens, we can remember that God loves us. Let’s go!

Wrap-Up 1:00

I’m so glad God helps us make wise choices, those decisions make such a big difference! That’s what this song is about, how God can work through us to change the world!

It’s great singing with you all. You can sit, but let’s take a moment to talk to God. God, thank you for being with us and leading us. Help us to say no to things we know are wrong and choose to follow you. Amen. If you don’t have one at home, pick up this Family Connection Card as you leave! This card has fun stuff for your family to do on it and reminds you of what we’re learning for the next few weeks. Do This: Show kids the Family Connection Card.

I’ve had a lot of fun being here with you all today, I hope to see you all next week!
