PEOPLE FOCUS Nursing of Yesteryear – a Personal Perspective

Our featured “People Focus” for this issue is Rosemary, an eighty-one year old lady who spent much of her working life as a nurse looking after the needy children in her care. Rosemary was born in the English County of Hampshire in 1933.

She thinks her love for nursing children started to develop when she looked after her young brother Roger, eight years her junior. Aside from that she always had an interest in children from an early age.

At the age of seventeen, Rosemary worked at a children’s convalescent home in Leicester which continued to foster her love of children. It was hard work for all who worked there. Living in the facility had its own challenges with the general Spartan conditions of the era.

Now with the desire to embark on a career in paediatric nursing, she attended an interview at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to enrol in a three year paediatric nursing course. The interview was a success, so in 1952 she commenced her paediatric nursing journey.

The first year covered topics: anatomy and physiology and general nursing. Year two covered surgical, medical and advanced nursing. The final year covered infant feeding and special subjects.

Bandaging was seen to be of great importance. One of the challenging tasks was to bandage a man in bed, which Rosemary found to be quite embarrassing at her tender age at the time.

Once graduated, Rosemary found work at the University College Hospital in London, where she happily worked for three years. The first year as a Staff Nurse, then she graduated as a “Sister” wearing a predominantly white full length uniform complete with a Florence Nightingale style head gear.

All had to be kept as immaculate as possible at all times. This was difficult even at the washing stage as the steam from the local trains, which ran close by, often made the washing dirtier after it had been on the line that when it was first washed.

Rosemary is not the sort of person to let the grass grow under her feet so she then went on to complete a Midwifery Nursing course in Ipswich which took twelve months to complete. The first six months was total training at the hospital, the next six months was out in the district on a bicycle – twenty-four hours on call and thirty hours off call a week. A steep learning curve for Rosemary but she took it all in her stride. Seeking adventure elsewhere, Rosemary then applied to travel to and work in Australia, Perth specifically. Travelling with a fellow nursing friend she soon found work at Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, Western Australia. Working there for two years initially, Rosemary then moved back to the UK for two years to work at the Southampton Chest Hospital for Infectious Diseases with a promotion to “Second Sister”. Rosemary was then drawn back to the Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth where another promotion was offered to her. She was given the position of “Charge Sister” on Ward Seven which was a specialist ward for the very young ill babies. She loved the work there and gained the respect of all her peers. After a dedicated early life to the paediatric world of nursing, it was now her turn to experience a family of her own. Rosemary met and married a local widowed Perth man, with children of his own, and they went on to have a son. Rosemary continues to live in Perth enjoying the retired life with family and friends.

This quiz is meant as a bit of fun with either multiple choice answers or true and false. The

An activity idea for Mother’s Day

Flowers and Music, with a flower arranging group.

Have the group in a suitable area – enough space for wheelchairs and frames as well as flowers and vases etc. You may need to run two sessions depending on the number of people involved. Tips for flower arranging

Choose the right size container that suits the flower stem height.

Use flowers in different stages of development, i.e. bud to flower.

Use different foliage size and colour.

Allow some space in between the flowers to prevent a crowded effect.

Make sure the colours are evenly balanced.

A good variation is to use a dried flower arrangement which will last for a significant period of time.

If using a glass/clear vase the addition of fillers such as small pebbles, stones or gravel can work well around the stems.

Variation Pressed flower/s provide an interesting alternative and preserve the flower/s for a lengthy period of time. Add in the appropriate background music, like Beautiful Blooms DVD, and the session will be a hit.
