Words from our President

Trisha Upchurch

President -2018-19

What a start to the new year! January’s luncheon was fun and informative. Trish Aikman,

owner of Ask Me Concierge presented a delightful program titled “Decluttering, Who, What,

Where, When, Why, and How.” She inspired me to clean up some of the meaningless piles at

my house although I’m still not sure if I should have tossed my grandchildren’s artwork! I

challenge you to fill up more trash bags than I did! Ms. Aikman also donated a two-hour con-

sultation; Sybil Arnold was the lucky winner. Special thanks to the following members who

donated monthly surprises for January: Kim Gentry, Sheila Nichols and Robin Little, Kim

Alford, and Lesa Gary .

Did you have a grand time at this year’s gala, “An Evening in Venice?” I did. An army of ladies

led by Ways and Means Vice-President Vicki Perrin produced a special night to remember.

The planning actually began last summer, and since then, many of you worked hard to create

such a memorable party. As you know, this awesome gala is our major fund-raising event of

the year. I look forward to the BIG GIVEWAY in May when we award high school scholar-

ships and community grants.

Other exciting events are planned for this spring. On February 20th , the scholarship commit-

tee chaired by Joy Modawell hosts our annual scholarship luncheon for junior and senior girls

at Lago Vista High. This is always a special time to spend time with the junior and senior girls

as they plan their future. Two other committees begin meeting in February. The nomination

committee chaired by Marilyn Hamblin begins consideration for next year’s officers, and the

philanthropic committee chaired by Carol Watson initiates the process for grant selection.

These committees welcome your input as they make some very important decisions.

February is American Heart Month. In February we celebrate Ground Hog Day on the 2nd

and Valentine’s Day on the 14th . Are you ready to observe Wave All Your Fingers at Your

Neighbor Day on the 7th , Ferris Wheel Day on the 14th , and Do a Grouch a Favor on the

16th ? Who can forget that in February we observe Presidents’ Day on the 18th , Love Your

Pet Day on the 20th , and Public Sleeping Day on the 28th ? Of course, the most important

date in February is our next luncheon on Tuesday, February 12. I look forward to having

lunch with you. In meantime, here’s a thought from Maya Angelou I leave with you: “Be a

rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”

Meet Brooke Taylor, former esthetician, now a licensed acupuncturist with a master’s in Chinese medicine. With deep experience in the skin care industry, Brooke specializes in a holistic ap-proach to facial rejuvenation through ancient Chinese Medicine and acupuncture along with modern techniques. Brooke began a career in skin care many years ago after she found her own skin in accelerated aging after spending years in the sun as a fly-fishing instructor and guide. She became an estheti-cian, and eventually moved to Australia where she worked as a global educator and brand man-ager for a range of organic skincare products in the spa industry. She has also worked to assist other brands with formulation of products, and now teaches her patients how to make good choices for their skin. She chose to study Chinese medicine to further her skills, knowing she needed the benefit of treating the skin from the inside out - treating the body as a whole allows healing to take place in systems that have a direct impact on the skin, not just topically.

Her system for improving your health, skin and wellbeing works by treating the person as a whole - you will find you sleep bet-ter, have improved digestion, less stress, less pain, less inflammation. Many issues of the skin resolve or improve when any one of the above improve, but her treatments also target specific complaints related to the skin or appearance.

Brooke’s treatment is a natural alternative to more invasive procedures to get the results you want - a healthier, more vibrant complexion and youthful appearance. Incorporating techniques like acupuncture for the face and body, guasha, facial cupping, organic skincare, LED light thera-py, and herbal medicine, each treatment is customized to the individual needs. The difference with these treatments is you will feel better, not just have fewer wrinkles - you literally look and feel rested, bright and lifted. Brooke pulls all of her knowledge together to help women and men look and feel their best. She looks for-ward to starting a healing journey with you!

An Evening in Venice was filled with excitement! Our guests were greeted by four lovely, smiling gondoliers, and the socializing began. K Oaks was transformed into an elegantly beautiful vision, complete with a gondola in a Venetian canal surrounded by a night sky of twinkling stars, and exquisite table settings along with touches of Venice around the entire room. Alfred’s Catering once again provided guests with a delicious meal of beef tenderloin and creative Italian accompaniments, as well as his personal touch of inviting tables to be served. The Big Night Quintet played a wide assortment of jazz and blues for our dancing pleasure. Our very skilled auctioneer, Renee Jones, provided the beginning buzz of excitement with the introduction of a fun

Heads or Tails game, followed by live auction items and paddles up bidding. The Wine Pull and Pick a Star were sell outs once again, and the Lotto Basket and Money Mania were additions that offered our guests new and exciting experiences.

The achievements of this magnificent event would not have been possible without a team of ladies who worked tirelessly and never wavered in their commitment to the gala. Elyse Ernst, Auction Chair as well as Gala Co-Chair, provided tremendous support; Elyse spent countless hours and traveled literally hundreds of miles to procure donations from businesses locally and all around the Austin area, as well as insuring the quality of our live auction items and some fun Pick A Star items. Gina Williams led the silent auction, and her time and creativity in compiling dozens of offerings made for a well organized and lovely presentation. Patty Nixa led the Decorating Committee, with her team of Gala Gals spending long hours over many months creating the perfectly beautiful decorations that filled K Oaks. Mindy Hensen once again pulled double duty on the Gala Committee, working with Alfred to arrange a beautiful meal, as well as coordinating the cashier process, during which Judy Devore worked her database magic. I cannot adequately describe the creativity of Anna Johndrow, who filled so many critical parts of the gala process, from designing the tickets and program, creating the slide show presentation for our auction items, and a myriad of other details. Kay Schneider juggled the coordination of lighting and curtains to create the perfect ambiance. Patti Johnson devoted her talent both at the Venetian themed photo area, as well as taking many other photos of the evening.

Many others worked diligently on the committee: Wine Pull, Rose Melican and Judy Guthrie; Ticket Sales, Melony Kempf and Sandra Schaffner; Publicity, Marilyn Hamblin; Wine Bar and wine glass sales, Janet Cason; Hostesses and Gondoliers, Jan Broxterman; and Elaine Hughes, who helped greatly in receiving donations at the Chamber of Commerce. As club President, Trisha Upchurch provided leadership and constant support of the Gala, always on call and generously giving of her time. I thank each one of you for contributing your time, your ideas and your incredible attention to every detail of the gala. You are a remarkable group of women and I’m honored to have worked alongside you.

There are so many others who volunteered all along the way to help make the gala successful, from many of you who assisted the committee chairs in whatever they asked you to do, to those of you who volunteered your time on gala evening to help with an auction table, Heads/Tail, Lotto or Money Mania, to those who worked as a cashier, bartender, or jumped in as needed to help with last minute details. The ladies who worked at K Oaks on Friday before gala day to help transform the room and to make sure everything looked perfect made the day so much fun. Thank you to our Special Interest Groups, who generously participated in the “SIG Challenge” coin buckets and to our Executive Committee. The money raised by these groups helped tremendously in our ability to make our silent auction, Pick a Star and other drawings successful. So to each and every one of you, thank you for your support, your time, and your dedication to the success of the gala.

The evening was a whirlwind of fun and socializing, but the generous participation in the live and silent auctions, paddles up, the Wine Pull, Pick a Star, Heads/Tails, Lotto Basket and Money Mania stole the show! The final amount raised is still being calculated, but we know that our goal of granting scholarships to local high school young women and awarding grants to local philanthropic organizations will once again be soundly achieved. Thank you to those who attended, bid on auction items and participated in the other offerings, and to all of you who donated time, money and items for the gala.

I marvel at what we as a club are able to accomplish. Each of you should take great pride in your efforts, not only for the gala but throughout the year, toward the achievement of our goal of helping others in our community.

Growing, growing, growing!

Membership

We are growing and it feels great! Our membership has grown to 326!.

The fun we are having, the relationships we have devel-oped the great things we do for our community makes this a fabulous club to be a member of.

Sometimes, especially after the intensity of the Gala ac-tivities, it is a good idea to review just what makes join-ing our club so enticing, inviting and FUN! As I state above, we do great things for the community; the funds we raise through our efforts at the recently celebrated Gala and throughout the year at various activities with-in our luncheons are used to provide scholarships and grants to many clubs and organizations in our commu-

nity. All of us benefit from the services, culture and en-tertainment these organizations provide. But additional-ly, the Lago Vista Women’s Club provides ongoing op-portunities to our members to become and remain active in all kinds of activities and opportunities to enrich themselves and others. We call them Special Interest Groups or SIGs. Check out the many different SIGs listed in the newsletter and on our website, there is bound to be something that interests you or a friend who just needs a little push to bring her talents and in-terests to share, enrich others and herself.

Invite others to join, we would love to have them.

Ladies,

Wasn’t the Gala GRAND? And the meal, oh! Alfred continues to provide such amazing meals. We are in for a real treat on February 12. Alfred has prepared a Mardis Gras themed meal for us! New Orleans captures the

nation’s imagination every year with the revelry they are so famous for and we will have our own little burst of Mardi Gras to

savor and enjoy. The very first Mardi Gras celebrated in what is now the US was held on March 3, 1699 by French explorers

Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Sieur de Bienville near present-day New Orleans, Louisiana. They held a small celebration

and dubbed their landing spot Point du Mardi Gras. Continuing in the vein of Louisiana inspired Mardi Gras, Alfred will have

us delighting in a robust repast at our February luncheon capturing You won’t want to miss it!

Out & About-Feb. 20 Many of you are looking forward to the next outing. which is back by popular demand. We will be returning to “Glass Fusion” class at the

Ceramics-n-More fired arts studio in Cedar Park. We will gather to have lunch first at a nearby eatery. This year they have a larger project planned for us. The cost will be $45/person payable at the time of the outing. Don’t forget to sign up at the SIG table at the luncheons so adequate supplies can be on hand for everyone who wants to participate. As always, participants are free to bring a little adult libation to share while you get those creative juices flowing. . Put it on your calendar and plan to come enjoy the day.

We will be collaborating, once again, with the Handbags for Hope project which collects used handbags to help protect victims of domestic abuse. Every March they collect gently used handbags that are suitable for daily use (no evening bags,

cosmetic bags, shopping totes or backpacks). During the month of April the collected bags have a tag with the phone number where battered women can receive services in the event they flee their home sewn into the lining. Research has shown that victims of domestic abuse often leave their residence with only two things...their purses and their children. Having emergency information sewn into the handbags provides them with a lifeline at the time they need it the most. The bags are then offered to the children of women living in domestic abuse situations to gift their mothers on Mother’s Day in May. It is also a wonderful opportunity for US to pass handbags we are no longer using on, clear up some clutter in our closets (isn’t that what Trish Aikman recommended? The contact for donating your bags is Anna Johndrow. 512-934-8835. She will be negotiating a central location for drop-off which will be informed soon. Just start sifting through your supply of handbags and don’t throw any away!

Literary Club The book, SCARLET

WOMEN, by Ian Graham is a fascinating look at the lives of the most famous and notorious women of history whose loves and conquests were the wealthiest and most powerful men of

their time. Some mistresses became wealthy from the gifts of

money, jewelry, mansions and property bequeath to them by their lovers, others receded into the shadows and poverty as their youthful beauty faded. A few ended up marrying their lovers as in the case of Charles and Camilla. Several were so popular with the citizens, they ruled the country after their lovers death. In our lifetime, the last fifty, sixty years or so, we all became familiar with modern scarlet women. Familiar names such as, Lucy Mercer, Judith Exeter Campbell, Blaze Starr, Kay Summersby, Madeline Brown, Jennifer Fitzgerald, Monica Lewinsky and Stormy Daniels have filled gossip columns, tabloid news and TV talk shows. Ian Graham book is well written and extremely entertaining. Come and enjoy some colorful stories presented with a slide show by Sybil Arnold and be an apart of some lively discussions. The book review will be a delightful , fun time for gray winter days.

Good News! Everyone ooohed and awed over

the outstanding decorations of our recently celebrated Gala. Every year the hard work and creative genius of so many dedicated women gets enjoyed only briefly

and then we are relegated to looking at pictures and exclaiming how gorgeous everything was. Then what do

you do with the decorations? Will they just be a problem for SOMEONE to store in their garage? Will they go to the landfill? Will they ever be appreciated again? This year we have the good fortune that our decorations will get a second life as the decorations and theme of a yet to be announced event. We have passed on the artwork used for the tickets, the program, the signs and most of the physical decorations and the recipients are thrilled but have asked us to keep it a secret for now. We are pleased that yet another audience will delight in the crafty, creative endeavors of the Lago Vista Women’s Club. We won’t spill the beans, and we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve been given the go-ahead.

Coming just after January, the month of new beginnings, is February.

From the Latin word Februarius, meaning “to purify“, February was

known as the “Month of Purification” during ancient Roman times. It is a

transitional time, finding itself just after a month of reflection and new

year’s resolutions. February is also the month to celebrate Valentine’s Day,

President’s Day, Groundhog Day, Super Bowl Sunday, National Boy Scout

Day and Pizza Day, International Women and Girls in Science Day and even…

(wait for it) National Shower with a Friend Day. But most important of all, it is the

birthday of all the lovely ladies listed here. Wish them all a Happy Birthday!

While We’re On the Subject of Decorations...

A special shout out to the Christmas Elves is due! This energetic and creative group

of women, under the guidance and leadership of Donna Nash decked out K-Oaks Ball

room for the Holiday Season for the enjoyment of all who use the ballroom during

the holidays. Every group, every individual who uses this space owes a debt of grati-

tude to these industrious women. The Lago Vista Women’s Club benefits our commu-

nity.
