Geography Assessment-World Heritage

This project requires you to identify and research two (2) World Heritage sites of your choosing

– one must be in Australia and one must be international; as well as one being a site of natural

significance and one being of cultural significance.

Fraser Island

a.) Fraser Island. The Aboriginal’s called Fraser Island ‘K’ gari’ it means paradise. Fraser

Island is a very special island, one that is one of a kind, by size in fact. It lies just off the

east coast of Australia and is 122 kilometres long. The reason why this island is so special

is because it is the biggest sand island in the world! It has hundreds of dingoes. It has over

350 different species of birds in this small area. It also has tall rainforests; it also has

some lakes in the depths of the forest. The landing in a plane is beautiful as well because

you get to land on the beach! These lovely facts about the island make it an exceptional

site, and a great for tourism.

Your task is to investigate and detail the reasons why your chosen site was proclaimed a

World Heritage site – that is, how and why does it meet the criteria of World Heritage and

what is its significance for humanity.

a.) I looked in the criteria of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fraser Island:

1. 7, 9, 10. 7- “to contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance”; 9- “to be outstanding examples representing significant on-going ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals”; 10- “to contain the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation”.

Why does it meet the criteria: Because it is, beautiful, masterpiece and untouched. It has numbers of birds and insects. It is the biggest sand island in the world! Can you believe that is has sand cliffs! It is a living representation of nature.

1. Explain why it was selected as a World Heritage site by establishing:1. How does it meet the criteria for World Heritage; and2. Why is it significant for humanity

a. It meets the criteria because it is beautiful and holds importance to animals as it holds thousands of species of birds and insects and because it represents a lot of ecosystems and how they have changed over time.

Page 2: wordpress.as.edu.auwordpress.as.edu.au/.../09/Geography-Assessment.docx  · Web viewGeography Assessment-World Heritage. This project requires you to identify and research two (2)

b. It is significant for humanity because it holds so many lakes, in fact more than any other state in Australia except for south Australia. It has 350 species of birds and over 300 species of ants! What would happen if we just didn’t have it? Maybe more of endangered animals, that’s just what we don’t need.

Where: Fraser Island is off the Qld east coast, 200 kilometres north of Brisbane. Its length is 120

kilometres, and width only 24 kilometres at some points. Although you might think it is small, it

is actually the biggest sand island in the world. It is also the largest island on the east coast of

Australia.

What: Fraser Island from any view looks like paradise, it is very green in the rainforest as it

has quite a high rain fall. It has over 100 fresh water lakes, this is the most of all the states in

Australia except for Tasmania, and most of the lakes have soft sand beside them. It has many

mammals, including swamp Wallabies and Dingoes. It also has many other little things too as

it has over 300 species of ants and 350 species of birds! It includes dense rainforests that

many of the animals hide in from the dingoes. It has massive sand cliffs.

The Task – Elements:

After selecting your sites you need to:

2. Explain where it is; you must include one or more maps and the specific latitudinal and longitudinal references

Fraser Island: Fraser Island is just of the east coast of Australia, 120 kilometres long, and 20 kilometres wide at the smallest point, it is of the east coast of Australia and 200 kilometres from Brisbane. However it holds the record for the biggest sand island in the world. Its latitude and longitude is 25.2167° S, 153.1333° E.

You must also provide visual and literary evidence of your site, inclusive of maps,

photographs and descriptions of the key elements of your site.

Great Wall Of China

b.) The Great Wall of China: The Great Wall of China stretches more than 20 000 kilometres,

built in 220 B.C; the dynasty leader Qin Shi Huang drove the construction. The

construction kept on going through other dynasties, until it was complete. This wall

became the biggest military structure at the time in the world. This structure kept out

clans destroying agricultural land. This in my opinion this is a symbol of how much the

Chinese technology was better than all the other countries main countries at the time. It

is wide enough to take four-horse wagon through the middle. It consists of thousands of

watchtowers too. It covers 19 regions!

Your task is to investigate and detail the reasons why your chosen site was proclaimed a

World Heritage site – that is, how and why does it meet the criteria of World Heritage and

what is its significance for humanity.

c.) I looked in the criteria of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Great wall of China:

1. 1, 2, 4. 1- “because it is a masterpiece of human creative genius”; 2- “to exhibit an

important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design”; 4- ““to be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history”;

Where: Fraser Island is off the Qld east coast, 200 kilometres north of Brisbane. Its length is 120

kilometres, and width only 24 kilometres. Although you might think it is small it is actually the

biggest sand island in the world. It is the largest island on the east coast of Australia.

Why was it picked in my opinion to be a world heritage site? Because it is the biggest and the

best, you can see it from space! What makes it better it was made somewhat B.C; lives were lost

for this construction! It has history written all over it. It is also it a living representation of what

technical age the Chinese were at.

Page 7: wordpress.as.edu.auwordpress.as.edu.au/.../09/Geography-Assessment.docx  · Web viewGeography Assessment-World Heritage. This project requires you to identify and research two (2)

What: The Great Wall of China is a gigantic stonewall it continues for 20 000 kilometres. It

has watchtowers every 400 metres and it was built all through the dynasties.

Why is it significant to Humanity: Because it kept some dynasties out of the emperor’s land

and it was a change into a technical age.

How does it meet the criteria for World Heritage site by establishing? Because it is a natural

beauty and it took pure genius to build it. It represents where the Chinese were in technical

age.

You must also provide visual and literary evidence of your site, inclusive of maps,

photographs and descriptions of the key elements of your site.

The Task – Elements:

After selecting your sites you need to:

3. Explain where it is; you must include one or more maps and the specific latitudinal and longitudinal references

The longitude and latitude of The Great Wall of China is 40.6769° N, 117.2319° E. It stretches of over 20 000 kilometres. The Great Wall of China is in China and it goes through many states, it doesn’t stop as it goes over many massive mountains, it took many dynasties to finish it and it was built for military reasons.

4. Explain what it looks like and what is involved with the site – its key elements (photos relevant)

Great Wall of China:

This is where the wall goes

This shows how beautiful the track is

This shows to me how hard it would have been to make the wall

Imagine building something in this type of weather?

5. Explain why it was selected as a World Heritage site by establishing:1. How does it meet the criteria for World Heritage; and2. Why is it significant for humanity

The Great Wall of China:a. It meets the criteria because it is a masterpiece by humanity; it shows the

technology from that era and because it is a wonderful building, art.b. Because it kept out rebels from attacking the home dynasty city and because it is the

biggest by far wall in the world!

Lastly, you are to select one of your chosen sites and prepare a detailed travel itinerary, pitched

at a World Heritage enthusiast, for a visit specifically to your World Heritage site.

This is it on show at night

Itinerary

After completing these questions for both of your sites, select one to prepare a detailed

travel itinerary.  Your itinerary should clearly identify:

1. How someone would get to the site (from Armidale)2. What activities they would undertake at the site (which should include specialist

inputs wherever possible)3. How many days these activities would take – i.e. a sense of timeline4. Relevant pictures and specific details to accompany your individual activities; you

may wish to include accommodation if this is relevant to the sense of experience but it is not a required element
