Phonics Advantage™ Word Family Bingo with Blends

Word Family Bingo with Blends focuses on: 1) short-vowel phonograms 2) beginning consonant blends and

decoding skills. A “word family” is a group of words that end in the same letters (or phonogram). Because they

have the same phonogram on the end, these words rhyme (sound similar). In this game there are 24 picture cards

with 24 different short-vowel phonograms (such as block). The players match the phonogram in the picture card to a

rhyming word on their game card with the same phonogram (such as clock, flock, stock, etc.). The phonograms are

underlined to help identify the word families (rhyming words). Also the phonograms are color-coded by short-vowel

sound. (“a” is blue, “e” is red, “u” is green, etc.) This is done to reinforce the short-vowel sounds (some of the

hardest sounds to learn and retain in English) and make visual recognition easier.

Word Family Bingo with Blends has words with 23 different beginning consonant blends. Consonant blends can be

2 or 3 letters long. When you pronounce a blend, you can “hear” the sounds of both (or all three) letters. The

consonant blends found in this phonics game are: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sp, st, sw, tr, tw,

spl, and str.

Phonics Advantage™ Word Family Bingo

Word Family Bingo uses words that start with single consonants. Word Family Bingo can be played simultaneously

with the “Blends” version above as both bingo games use the same 24 short-vowel phonograms. Combining the

games allows students of different reading levels to play together, and makes a total of 12 different playing game

cards. Phonograms are color coded by short-vowel sound for reinforcement and easy visual recognition. This color

coding is used consistently throughout Phonics Advantage™ products including games, phonics poems and spelling

worksheets.

Playing Directions

Players match a rhyming word on their playing card that has the same phonogram as the picture card.

The phonogram is underlined on both the player's card and picture card. To make recognition easier, the picture

card and the words on the player's cards are color coded by short-vowel sound. To encourage developing decoding

skills and build vocabulary, the player should say both the phonogram and the word before marking the card.

Traditional bingo rules have a player finish (call bingo) when a straight line is completed - across, down or diagonal.
