Thirroul Seaside Festival
Last Sunday over 45 of our Creative and
Performing Arts students from Year 6-12
performed at the Thirroul Seaside and Arts
Festival. Our students entertained the large
audience for over 30 minutes showcasing the
skills of our band, dance and vocal students
including members of our Community of
Schools band program from Russell Vale and
Woonona Primary Schools. Congratulations to
all involved – especially our talented ISER
Ensemble students who drove all the way
from a rehearsal in Nowra to perform with us
before they went on tour this week. Thank
you to Miss R Sharp, Mrs Arnold, Miss K
Sharp, Mr Walker, Izak and all parents who
helped on the day. Well done to Paige
Townsend and Chris Decena from Year 12
who performed an acoustic set on the library
stage on Saturday.

Art at Thirroul
Excellence Innovation Success
Woonona High School was asked, along with all the other Primary and High Schools in the area, to participate in a project to
"colour up" the telegraph poles for the Thirroul Seaside Festival.
A group of our enthusiastic Year 10 students including Brandon Callander, Grace Ward, Ella Murray, Amara Prentice, Tess
Walsh and Tiana Mackay (absent from photo) spent an afternoon producing our ocean themed colourful works which looked
fantastic.
The artworks were used to decorate telegraph poles around Thirroul and really added to the atmosphere of the festival.
Congratulations to these students.

Illawarra South East Regional (ISER) Performing Ensemble tours to Woonona HS On Wednesday 10th April, Woonona High School
proudly hosted a performance from this ensemble,
which is comprised of talented students who are
selected from all schools in our region in the areas of
dance, band and vocals. This ensemble takes their
cabaret style show on tour each term, entertaining
audiences with a range of songs from a variety of eras
and styles. It was wonderful to see our hall packed with
our students, our Community of Schools band students
from Woonona and Russell Vale Primary Schools,
parents and community members enjoying the show
and supporting our WHS performers. There only 50
students selected for the ensemble Congratulations to
the following students – we thoroughly enjoyed your
performance:
Year 8 – Ruby Martin (vocals) and Kai Johnson
(saxophone)
Year 9 – Elizabeth Apter and Layla Ryan (dance); Tyler
Wade (vocals)
Year 10 – Sky Bardsley, Jocelyn Bray and Jordan White

Unplugged 27 Our first Unplugged concert for 2019 was held on Tuesday
9th April at 7pm in the Hall. It was fantastic to see so many
talented students from Year 7-12 perform for their
community.
Featuring a variety of vocal and instrumental songs, the
night included Year 12 students practicing their HSC
performances and we also heard some of their
compositions. Well done to all students involved – we
look forward to seeing you perform again throughout the
year.

This term in Science, students have been collaborating with each
other to solve a range of real world problems and developing the skills
to conduct investigations and communicate their ideas to an
audience.
Year 7 have been busy working on a Science STEM project developing
their skills in design and collaboration. They have been using skills
from Maths and TAS to conduct research on bridge design as well as
test materials to construct the strongest bridge possible out of 120
paddlepop sticks and superglue! The bridge had to span a gap of
40cm and hold weights without collapsing. Creativity was definitely
buzzing in all classrooms with the strongest bridge designed by Poppy
and Zoe holding a total of 30kg!
Year 8 have been learning about the scientific method and cells. They
have been using the microscopes to observe a range of cells and delve
into the interesting world of plants and how they function. Students
had to design and conduct their own experiment at home and display
their findings in a report. We had some very interesting topics this
year looking at the effect of music on heart rate, the best paint
remover to remove paint stains and testing the relationship between
surfboard size and speed!
Year 9 have been looking at the topic of communication and light. An
eye dissection was the highlight for some students! This helped
students identify parts of the eye and understand how it functions. A
few students proved to be a little squeamish!
Year 10 have been busy conducting chemical reactions and delving
into the world of genetics. Students have isolated DNA and made
edible DNA molecules. They have also been asking some very
interesting questions about their inheritance patterns!
Our senior students have been busy completing their Depth Studies in
Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Investigating Science. Students have
been required to use their inquiry skills to design and complete an
experiment to test an inquiry question of their choice. It has been a
pleasure to watch students explore their passions and develop their
collaborative and creative skills to test hypotheses and formulate
conclusions on their questions.
See our Facebook page for lots more great photos.

SRC Easter Egg Hunt
On Thursday 11 April our SRC organised an Easter egg hunt for our students. Tickets for the event were sold and all monies
raised will be donated to Saving Chloe Saxby, the total thus far being $205.50. Students had a great time scouring the school
grounds for hidden eggs and it looks like some were very successful!

This week marked the 5th and final coaching session for our Year 8 Sports Academy soccer unit. Students have worked
intensively with two representatives from Sydney FC & have been learning intricate tactics & skills each session. Here’s what
our students had to say:
I enjoyed when Sydney FC came because the instructors were very nice and they taught us lots of different things. They taught
us the 4 core skills of soccer and focussed on one of the cores each lesson.
The 4 core skills were passing, 1st touch, dribbling and lul. Overall it was good and everyone enjoyed the lessons.
Mia (Year 8)
Sydney FC was great because they taught us good soccer skills and it was a fun environment.
It was good that every week we did something new and learnt something new. It was nice to get some independence because
they let us do our own thing.
Saxon (Year 8)
Our Sports Academy class had the opportunity to have Sydney FC players come and coach us during our practical lessons. It
was a great experience to learn new skills and play fun games with our peers, run by the FC players. I really enjoyed playing
soccer this term with them, and I’ve learnt new skills and improved heaps with the help of the Sydney FC. During our lessons
we split into two groups and our leader would explain what we had to do which were fun games and improving on skills.

Surf Competition Awards
Last week at assembly awards for the school Surfing Competition, as well as the inaugural “Rod Landy Trophy for Excellence in
Surfing “ were presented by Mr Chamberlain. The following students were presented with awards including Corey Gray who
took out the prestigious Rod Landy Award:
Open Body Board 1st Dean Brackenridge 2nd Mitch Jane 3rd Kyan Windeyer
Junior Boys B Division 1st Gill Esdale 2nd Matt Marton 3rd Blake Parker
Junior Boys Surfboard Division A 1st Aaymon Fitzgibbon 2nd Egan Kuhn
Open Boys Surfboard 1st Corey Gray 2nd Kyan Windeyer 3rd Aaymon Fitzgibbon
Mr Chamberlain ( event organiser) commented about the competition:
“Both sides of Woonona Headland needed to be used to find enough waves to continue the contest which was held in
consistent 2—3 foot swell. As usual it did not matter what the conditions the dished up, all surfers were “out there” and “into
it” for the duration of the activity, whether they were competing or just free surfing between heats.
Thank you to Rachelle Nellies who again volunteered to run the tally room. Congratulations to all participants who’s
enthusiasm is to be commended and congratulations to all the winners , who in most cases had to combine experience and
skill to earn their result in changeable conditions.

Students in 7 English L have been learning about the lives of other children around the world in the 'Through My Window' unit
of work. This unit promotes deep knowledge and understanding of the experiences of our students and others around the
world. To further promote knowledge integration and connectedness, students from WHS have written a series of letters to
the students of the newly built Kovato High School. Kovoto High School is a new school, built by Australian volunteers, on the
island of Samasodu, in the Solomon Islands.
Our WHS students wrote letters describing the learning styles that they employ and their various experiences here at school.
They also wrote words of encouragement for Kovato High School students who have not had the opportunity to access High
School Education before. As a part of this fantastic 'real world' learning, WHS sent a reply-paid envelope to Kovato HS, so
they have the opportunity to form a meaningful connection with our school.
We hope that the students at Kovato High School enjoy reading our letters!

Year 8 Beach Safety Expo
Excellence Innovation Success
Our Year 8 PDHPE students have been working hard on a unit of work about beach safety, and this week had the chance to
show lifeguards from Woonona Surf Beach the projects they had completed.
The students had been asked to produce an advertising campaign which would educate people (especially visitors to our area)
about beach safety.
The projects were amazing. Several students produced fantastic videos, many produced posters (including some which were
huge) and there was even a phone app which would give users information about beach and weather conditions.
Our visitors were very impressed with Year 8’s efforts and these Year 8 students should be very proud of the projects they
produced.

My Experience with a Japanese Exchange Student
My experience with Yuna ( my Japanese Student ) was marvellous. Yuna was kind
and caring. It was a wonderful experience and I recommend it to everyone. I have
an older brother and always wanted a sister and it felt like having an older sister but
also a new best friend. I have kept in touch since Yuna went home. While Yuna was
here we went to Sydney and on the first day we caught the ferry to Taronga Zoo
and saw the Koalas and Kangaroos which was Yunas main goal while she was here.
We also caught the cable car over the zoo and then caught the ferry back to the
hotel. On the second day in Sydney we went shopping and ran into a few of Yunas
friends. On the last night she was here Yuna played Bohemian Rhapsody on our very
sad and out of tune piano. I was very sad to see Yuna go home. When Yuna left she
ran up to me, gave me a hug and just simply said Thank You, Yuna had tears in her
eyes when she got on the bus. It was only a short time they were here for but it was
so worth it. If you ever have the opportunity to host a Japanese Student or any
Student I would highly recommend it, and they are very polite. It was a pleasure
welcoming Yuna into my home.

More opportunities to get involved: There will be a further opportunity for
families to participate in the Japanese exchange program when we welcome
students from our host school, Kitazano High School, in August. Please see Mr
Thistlethwaite or Ms Matthews for more information.
Corey Snelson (Opens) and Tynan Taylor (U15's) (pictured left) were
voted best & fairest from our school at the recent South Coast Rugby
League Trials.
Jarryd Arnold and Cooper Bennett also represented the Northern Zone
in the Opens Rugby League while Adam Amini and Max Martin were in
the U15's team.

On April 2, Woonona High School supported “Blue for Autism Awareness Day”. Autism Awareness Day speaks out against dis-
crimination, celebrates the diversity of our global community and strengthens commitment to the full inclusion and participa-
tion of people with autism.
WHS students were invited to wear blue accessories in support of Autism Awareness Day. Blue hair ties, bangles and earrings
were popular accessories and a total of $70.80 was raised for this cause. Great Effort from our SRC members who organised
the day.

Our Hospitality kitchens have once again been very busy this
week with Year 8 classes preparing Easter muffins and apple
turnovers, the Master Chef class taking on the “chicken
challenge” and the Year 12 Food Technology class preparing
