The focus of this issue is WoolSafe reaching another milestone. We are proud to present some testimonials from the chemical suppliers who share our values in giving consumers and

professional cleaners the best maintenance products.

As we look back at the past 25 years, we can be proud not only of the success of the original approval programme, but of the other WoolSafe initiatives: the WoolSafe Academy with its expanding range of training courses, the WoolSafe app, the new CleanSeal and EnviroSeal programmes, and of course of our increasing links with the flooring industry.

We are proud of our growing network of Service Providers and Inspectors, whose work we can always recommend with confidence even to the most prestigious clients.

As we look ahead, we will build on our strength to deliver an even better service to all our members. We will carry on visiting various exhibitions and trade shows to highlight WoolSafe Approved products and services to all sectors.

We hope to see many of you at the 4th WoolSafe Conference in October, where you can learn, socialise and help us shape our future.

25 Years of Approved ProductsIn this, the 25th anniversary year since the launch of the WoolSafe Approval programme, we would like to thank all the progressive cleaning product manufacturers with the vision to join with WoolSafe and the carpet mills in solving the many cleaning product-related issues of the day. It is the collective desire to raise the standard of the products, available to carpet owners and professional cleaners, that has transformed the market for the benefit of all.

WoolSafe’s Approved Product Licensees have, during the past 25 years, developed, tweaked, enhanced and reformulated products to improve efficacy and ensure the safety of their products in order to meet the WoolSafe performance criteria.

The WoolSafe Mark placed on packaging ensures that end-users can now easily find maintenance products that are best suited for use on all popular carpet fibre types, including wool.

Of the original nine cleaning product manufacturers that joined us at the launch of the WoolSafe programme twenty five years ago five are still licensees today: Sebo, Host, Chemspec (now Legend Brands Europe), Vax and RE Wittaker. We asked our Approved Product Licensees why they got involved and why they are still proudly displaying the WoolSafe certification. This is what they had to say:

Racine Industries owners of the HOST and Von Schrader brands have a proud relationship with WoolSafe that goes right back to the WoolSafe launch in 1991. We recognise, in the words of Fritz Rench CEO, that “WoolSafe has led the field over the years in providing a reliable matrix for assessing carpet cleaning methods”. Through this provision of independent testing we are able to show that our products are effective and safe to use and this provides reassurance for the customer.

WoolSafe provide us with further support when dealing with new opportunities and in particular this is of great help when we are dealing with carpet mills. We continue to support WoolSafe and their marketing initiatives.

Mike Egerton, Managing Director, Host Von Shrader, UK

“As the UK’s number one floorcare brand, customers are at the heart of everything we do. We are trusted to take care of their homes as much as they do. As a result, WoolSafe accreditation has been really important to us, for the last 25 years. When the programme started, Vax were one of the first domestic brands to have our carpet washer solutions WoolSafe Approved, and now we’re proud to be able to say that our entire range is accredited, including our specialist direct to carpet / upholstery treatment solutions. We know our customers are delighted too – as they tell us how important the accreditation is to them!”

Naomi Martin, Head of Category – Carpet Washers, Vax

“SEBO are proud to have been working with WoolSafe for 25 years ensuring quality carpet care products are available to the professional cleaning industry and the domestic user.”

Justin Binks, Managing Director, Sebo UK

“reducing risk whilst maintaining performance, that’s key in any competitive market”.

‘In the early days Chemspec products were formulated for the USA market where carpets are predominantly synthetic pile. WoolSafe testing and approval reassured our customers that we had reengineered many of our products to suit the UK & European markets. In fact, back in 1992 Chemspec were the first chemical manufacturer to have a full range of products, aimed at the professional carpet and rug cleaner, approved by WoolSafe and supporting WoolSafe remains important to us today. The certification Mark helps our customers choose the right product.

WoolSafe do a great job at helping Legend Brands Europe reassure our carpet cleaning customers that they are reducing risk whilst maintaining performance, that’s key in any competitive market.

Congratulations on your milestone!’

‘Dick Whittaker was a pioneer in the early days of low moisture encapsulation carpet cleaning and was convinced this technology was a more effective, safe and environmentally sustainable option to traditional carpet cleaning methods.

A deep interest in effective carpet cleaning convinced Dick that the testing protocol at WoolSafe is based on solid science and thus advances the carpet cleaning industry to a new level. Since that time the science behind carpet cleaning has again moved to an even higher level with the introduction of Green WoolSafe accreditation.

As America’s leading carpet cleaning system we assure our customers that if a cleaning solution is safe on wool, it is safe on most commercial carpets. We proudly feature the WoolSafe mark on our products and marketing material.

Congratulations WoolSafe on your silver anniversary!’

Joseph A Bshero, Product Manager-Quality Engineer, R E Whittaker Company

“the testing protocol at WoolSafe is based on solid science and thus advances the carpet cleaning industry to a new level”

‘Wrennalls Group, incorporating Dry Fusion, M2Care and Oates Laboratories Europe has some of the widest product ranges approved through the WoolSafe programme clearly demonstrating our belief in the value and integrity of the certification.

The commercial advantage gained by having our products listed and promoted while displaying the mark on our packaging has me convinced that our investment in perfecting our formulations has paid off.

Lots of manufacturers make bold claims about their products but only through independent testing and accreditation can professional cleaners be sure that a product will do what is claimed and will not cause any adverse effects. That is why we certify our products and why professional cleaners can be sure they are of the highest quality in the industry.

Congratulations for reaching this milestone.’

Shaun Bradbury, Managing Director, Wrennalls Group

‘As the world's largest carpet and upholstery cleaning company, Chem-Dry takes great pride in having multiple products that are WoolSafe tested and approved. We work to ensure that our products and processes meet the highest of standards for carpet care. With technicians in more than 5,000 homes every day, having the WoolSafe approval puts us at an advantage in the marketplace as we work to deliver on our promise to make homes and businesses Drier, Cleaner, and Healthier’.

Congratulations on reaching the important milestone of 25 years for the WoolSafe program.

Ed Quinlan, CFE, Vice President Franchise Services, HRI / Chem-Dry

Regarding your upcoming Silver Jubilee: first let me congratulate you on your achievement. Second, let me say that we are honoured to be associated with The WoolSafe Organization.

Prochem Kärcher Group is the leading manufacturer of professional carpet and upholstery cleaning equipment and detergents. Our detergents are the benchmark for cleaning performance and cover the entire range of cleaning specific solutions.

The reason we got involved is because the professional cleaner relies on the products he uses to get the job done without harming their customer’s property. Having the third party WoolSafe Approval gives the cleaners the confidence to get the job done with the reassurance that he won’t be damaging the fibers during the cleaning process. Cleaners know the WoolSafe Approval certification and look for it on the products that they use.

What we value most about the WoolSafe Approval is the integrity of the certification along with the brand recognition and association it provides our product lines.

A few months ago, during a conversation with a colleague, I was confronted by a viewpoint that membership of any trade association or other organisation was a waste of time and money. He was adamant that the cost of membership was more than any return I could expect in the form of extra work.

Naturally, as a long standing member of WoolSafe, I disagreed. My primary reasons for membership were, are and will always continue to be for the support, camaraderie and shared technical expertise of like-minded professionals.

Not convinced by my colleague’s logic about new work generated, I decided to search my database for some cold, hard facts about new customers found because of my WoolSafe Membership. The figures are pleasantly surprising.

I have taken a snapshot from my last four years. The turnover from direct WoolSafe.org referrals is £2610. OK, on the scale of things, this figure, averaging out at about £650 per year, isn’t a great deal.

But this isn’t the whole story. A high proportion of these entries havebecome regular customers and so on subsequent invoices are entered into my database as repeat customers. These are not represented in the above figures.

We then have all of those new customers, from whichever medium introduced, will have been given a WoolSafe tri-fold leaflet, along with my business card, upon my arrival to audit and submit a quotation. This leaflet is a great sales-aid and definitely enhances my professionalism in the eyes of my prospects.

We also have carpet manufacturers who recommend WoolSafe Approved Service Providers, and for my database, these are entered within a different category.

Finally on this subject, four years ago I had a referral from a colleague about a leading carpet manufacturer who wanted some complete rolls of carpet protected for a premium client of theirs. My presentation seemed to be struggling a little until I mentioned that I was a WoolSafe Member and would be using a WoolSafe Approved Carpet Protector. The mood changed immediately. They were so much more relaxed and receptive to my presentation. The total earnings from this one customer, over two jobs during the last four years is £3482. When you start to add together the above figures, plus the unknown amount for repeat work, I am now convinced that my WoolSafe membership is highly profitable.

I feel sure that other members have a similar story to tell, so I would like to pass on our thanks for all of the hard work put in over the years by WoolSafe on our behalf.

What has WoolSafe done for me?Ken Wainright explains...

Page 8: Woolsafe news 2016 25 years

"WoolSafe continues to grow! We now have more than 180 WoolSafe Approved Service Providers in North America. Numbers of WASPs in North America are set to overtake those in the UK and Europe. Rug Care Specialists are a particular group that recognises the value of their association to WoolSafe and use it to help promote their services to high-end clients.

Ruth introduced her new rug ID flash cards at the ICE Convention in Las Vegas in January. The concept has been well received by rug cleaners around the US and even in the UK. The subscription for 120 cards is available for purchase on her website www.rugladyseminars.com

In February Ruth traveled to San Diego, California to teach a rug cleaning course at Stanley Steemer, San Diego, a WoolSafe Service Provider company. Then in March she also taught a rug cleaning course in Jacksonville, Florida for Heirloom Oriental rug cleaning. Several WoolSafe Service Provider companies were in attendance at both classes.

In April Ruth made a presentation at The Experience Convention in Atlanta on “Fibers Found in Rugs” . . . a most appropriate subject for the WoolSafe Director! In late April, Ruth attended the Association of Rug Care Specialists convention in Philadelphia. Along with 4 others, she received her Certified Rug Care Specialist certificate and designation.

Over the past few months we’ve received an increasing number of calls from consumers not only looking for Service Providers to clean their carpet and rugs, but also advice on spot cleaning and vacuum cleaner recommendations. This is proof that WoolSafe is becoming more and more recognized in North America.”

We have set up a closed FaceBook group for WoolSafe Registered Inspectors around the world to share their knowledge and seek advice from other group members.

There are hundreds of years of carpet complaint investigation experience present in the group so it will be a great way to share those tricky investigations amongst peers without any chance of clients or the general public being able to see what is posted.

We have also set up a closed group for WoolSafe Approved Service Providers around the world to discuss the topics that concern them most and get help and support from both WoolSafe HQ and fellow WASPs.

Please get involved and start posting. WoolSafe Product licensees are also welcome to post information about new products, machines, training courses etc.

So, let’s all get behind the groups and use them for all our mutual benefit.

pH measured and interpolated

We all know the rules about handling chemicals: open your concentrate, take as much out as you need, put back the lid tight and never put any leftover back. Simple. But are you doing it like this all the time? And more importantly, would anything really happen if you did not?

We did an experiment with one of the WoolSafe approved chemicals, pouring some concentrate in a beaker and “forgetting about it”, leaving it uncovered. We monitored its pH and found that it in just 5.5 days its original pH=9.5 dropped by almost a unit to 8.6. The further change was not that dramatic, in the following fortnight it only dropped a further 0.13, indicating that the damage had already been done.

Remember that pH is on a logarithmic scale so a drop of 1 unit in pH means that, as some of its ingredients evaporated, the chemical in the beaker would become roughly 10x less alkaline. This drop in pH indicates an overall change in the composition of the product which risks significantly altering its performance.

WoolSafe Educational Conference 2016We are thrilled to be hosting WoolSafe Conference 2016 at the Midland Hotel in Bradford on the 6th of October 2016 followed by a Fleece to Floor Tour on the 7th.

This year’s conference is looking at how best to clean and maintain challenging fibres such as bamboo, silk, viscose, sisal, seagrass, etc.

We’ll be discussing and demonstrating the different methods and treatments that can be applied to these fibres that are found increasingly in the expensive carpets and rugs of high-end clients.

There will also be a workshop on treating the kind of water spillages that carpet cleaners are often asked to attend to, such as leaking washing machines, burst pipes etc. Is it enough just to suck out the excess water and leave or are you putting your client’s health, and your business, at risk?

Marketing your business to maximise your profits is arguably the most important skill of all so this will also be a prominent part of the day.

We will discuss what research WoolSafe has been doing in the lab and what our plans are. This will be followed by an open forum where members can raise any issues of concern and make suggestions about our collective path forward.

We expect to welcome attendees from around the world including the UK, USA, Australia, Spain, Greece and Norway.

There is a 3 course banquet after the conference which is always a relaxed and fun evening.

Partners are welcome to attend all of the events.

For this year’s conference day two we are planning the ‘Fleece to Floor Tour’.

Buying Group Show

Goings On

WoolSafe was invited by Wools of New Zealand (WoNZ) to join them on their eye-catching stand at The National Buying Group Show in Sollihul, England. The show is attended by hundreds of carpet retailers.

WoNZ requested that we act as technical advisors demonstrating red wine removal and advising retailers on correct carpet care.

WoolSafe was also prominent on the Mr Tomkinson stand where we had

assisted in creating a display showing an appearance retention comparison (after 3 years wear and cleaning) between wool and polypropylene carpets.

Needless to say the wool far out-performed the polypropylene leading Mr T to ‘pity the fool who doesn’t buy wool!’

Hanna and Steve from WoNZ

WoolSafe was pleased to exhibit at the first Manchester Cleaning Show last April. It was surprisingly busy for an inaugural event with a very positive feeling among fellow exhibitors and visitors.

We met up with many professional

cleaners keen to find out more about WoolSafe testing, training and the Approved Products of our Chemical Licensees.

Wool Floor Show London - ReviewThe Campaign for Wool and British Wool launched a successful new trade event, Wool Floor Show London in March this year. This provided a Spring event for wool carpet manufacturers to fly the flag of quality wool carpets in an area of the country where much of the product is sold.

The event brought together the largest concentration of wool flooring manufacturers anywhere in the world to support the many new dynamic promotions which are powering the wool industry forward.

One of these is an important new website for independent wool retailers, WoolRetailer.com that was launched live at the show and is a promotional vehicle for wool carpets that has already received the backing and support of many key manufacturers and buying groups.

The WoolRetailer.com platform includes a wool educational standard that gives retailers and sales personnel ‘Wool Specialist’ status and provide them with access to materials and promotional packages to support their business.

Retailers will benefit from registering with the website that offers both retailer and consumer appeal. The aim is to ensure that consumers can find a quality wool retailer in their locality and that wool retailers can gain more knowledge, status and access tools to help them be better informed so they can sell wool carpets.

A true highlight of the event was the Campaign for Wool’s Wool Carpet Awards which put wool pride at the heart of this event and celebrated its amazing performance, quality and style.

WoolRetailer.com steers both Wool Specialist retailers and consumers to WoolSafe.org where solutions and services can be found for all their cleaning needs.

This years TACCA training day was the best yet with over 200 professional cleaners in attendance!

WoolSafe was happy to be there educating visitors on correct cleaning of wool carpet, why they should use approved products and demonstrating the damage that can occur to the fibre if incorrect chemistry is used.

Adam Jankowski demonstrated to the crowds how to perform invisible carpet repairs such as bonded inserts and re-tufting as well as advanced stain removal using WoolSafe products.

Adam shows techniques for removing a two year old coffee stain.

New Approved FormulationsSeveral WoolSafe licensees reformulated their approved products making them even more effective.

The popular Australian spotter, Carpet Power has a new, improved formulation. It is safe enough for domestic use, yet powerful enough for professionals to use.

It contains a surfactant with an odour-eliminating, micro-encapsulation system and a fresh lavender fragrance.

Vax Ltd has refreshed their solution range, introducing new fragrances; and in the case of the powerful Ultra+ Refresh & Revitalise, their Oxy-Lift Boost™ technology to help remove embedded stains from carpets and upholstery and neutralising lingering

odours. The new Vax Pre-spray now contains antifoam.

Large American flooring supplier and long term WoolSafe licensee, Mohawk Industries have reformulated their FloorCare Essentials Carpet Spot Remover, using more environmentally favourable ingredients.

There is a new, even better formulation for Chem-Dry® Repel ProtectantTM

too. It provides industry-leading performance in repelling most liquids and preventing most dirt and stains from being absorbed by carpet fibres and upholstery fabrics.
