Old friends, slow, crotchety, maybe stinky. How did this happen? Once they were cute little pups – an adorable ball of fur. Now they’re tired, lame, slow, yet still the same devoted friend, eager competitor, anxious retriever. Time marches on. We don’t see it or notice the slowing of the limbs, but some day it

catches up to them. They don’t run so fast for that stick or ball. We don’t notice the clouding eyes, just realize that the ball, flung so far, is lost in the tall grass. The nose is trying to locate what the eyes have lost.

All these changes come on our friend slowly, but steadily. We say our dog is 5…or 8…or 10. Yikes, how did he become this old?! Did it happen when we weren’t looking? Weren’t paying attention? Our four-legged friends are slower to rise and not quite as able, yet still eager for the days’ challenges. We deny it, don’t want to see it, recognize it, or give a name to it for fear of making it real. The passing of time and robbing of youth we didn’t see, or didn’t want to. We want our friend to live long! We want and need them! We don’t want this getting old, passing of time. Perhaps if we don’t acknowledge it, it won’t happen. It cannot happen! Oh, but it has….we now have an old dog.

The change is quite sudden, or so it seems for some, more slowly and gradually for others. Sometimes it seems to sneak up as they lie sunning in the grass, or while they stand, waiting at the door, or curled up on the rug. Age creeps up and leaps onto them unannounced. They don’t see it with their rheumy eyes, but cannot avoid it with their creaky, slow-moving joints. Once old age has caught up with them, we suddenly have “old Dogs.”

For those of us who love our dogs and would do anything for them, it is heart-breaking to realize what is happening to our faithful friend. Unfortunately, there are those who do not see the gold within, among the silver hair. For them, it is a signal to “trade in”. Yes, like an old car, not so shiny anymore, it is time to hit the pound. Trade in that old, slow hound for a cute, bouncy pup. But don’t they know? These people, so quick to give up on their faithful friend, should realize the puppy will grow old, too, someday. (For these folks, I strongly recommend a stuffed dog, easily placed on a shelf.)

Those of us who would never, ever think of such behavior treasure each and every thump and wag of the tail. A gentle nudge of that silken head into our loving hand that says, “I’m still here and I love you” is such a gift. Time does not stop when we discover we have an “old dog,” but we still try to delay it. We savor every slow walk, pausing to enjoy just being with our aging friend. We allow him to savor all the “news” on the fence post or hydrant. We put down a ramp to take away the challenge of the stairs. We entice failing appetites with the best of the best “dog caviar”, perhaps even some of the people-variety,just to offer a tidbit he will enjoy. We do these small things out of love, pure and simple. We care. We want to make whatever golden days are left for him, and for us, be the best possible.

To sit with our old friend, just enjoying each other’s company, is a blessing. Senior dogs give us their all, in so many ways, and all this we treasure, deep in our heart. Old dogs can teach us many things, we just need to listen, spend a few minutes in their company, slow down and see what it is they find so interesting. We need to be present with them, as they are with us, and be brave for them. They will tell us in their own way when all this “old” is too much. When their time comes to move on to the next life, please don’t abandon them. Conquer your own selfish fears, even if you can’t seem to bear it. Stay with your friend….you are the light of his life. Stay with him until his light has gone and moved on to where good dogs go. You owe him that much.

Our little shelter has been very busy this summer adopting and taking in dogs from other shelters when we have room and our dog and cat rooms are constantly at capacity.

We often get emails from other shelters down south where they have population

explosions of dogs in their care and they are unable to keep them. If they don’t find homes for these dogs they will have no choice but to put them down to make room for the new. Well, you can imagine how heart-wrenching it is to see the pictures of these great dogs and know what could happen to them. We have taken in quite a few of these dogs and they are really remarkable animals that have had a very difficult life. We have always taken dog transfers but usually from sources where all of the vet work has been done. We just recently started taking dogs in that needed all vet work done. These shelters down south (southern Illinois and Tennessee) do not do the vet work on their dogs because they may not find homes for them, and if they don’t – well, you know what will happen.

Safe Haven, needless to say, has incurred an astronomical amount of medical bills this summer. It seems like every dog we have is on some kind of medication. Some of the medical issues we deal with are: Lyme disease, Heartworm disease, skin issues requiring medicated baths, wounds, mange, worms, fleas, ticks – you name it we are taking these dogs in and getting them healthy for their new lives in their new homes.

We have had a kitten with a bot fly maggot imbedded in her head, a kitten with a blue foot, and we keep our cats here so long that we actually have to give them

their second round of annual shots. We also had a kitten brought in that had to have x-rays because it was not using its back leg. The x-rays showed that the injury was old because the joints in the knee and hip were already calcified. Not sure what will happen to this sweet little thing, hopefully she will recover and someone will give her a home.

Know that as a supporter of Safe Haven, you are doing some really great work. You are actually saving the lives of animals that are very deserving of a good life. We can’t thank you enough for your support.

When we get reports of the “happy tails” back from our adopters it really makes us know that this is all worth it. If you are one of those adopters, please send us your pet’s happy tail and we will put it on our bulletin board. Everyone loves reading these “happy tails” when they visit.

We are so grateful for the adopters that give our animals wonderful homes and we are grateful to all of our supporters. Without you we could not continue to do what we do at Safe Haven. Over the past 6 months we have saved many lives -- thanks to you!

In response to a request on our Facebook Page we have created an Amazon Wish List for the shelter. You can see all the items we use and need and just “wish”

for on this list. Anytime you would like to help out you can just go to Amazon.com and click on “Wish List” in the upper right hand corner. Type in our email address: [email protected] and our Wish List should pop up. Just click on an item and it gets sent to us as a surprise with your name in the package. So far we have received several of these surprises and it is really helping out with the happiness of the animals in our care. We received kittie treats, Kongs for our dogs, lots of cat litter and dog treats. If you have an Amazon Prime account it is all shipped at no cost to you. Also, if you have not already done so and you are an Amazon customer, please sign up for Amazon Smile. We get dollar donations when you purchase through Amazon Smile and indicate Safe Haven Humane Society as your charity.

It takes lots of things to run the shelter and any help we can get helps us to better take care of the dogs and cats that call Safe Haven their temporary home.

Petco’s Holiday Wishes Campaign is focused on great stories

submitted by adopters about how the love of their adopted pet changed their lives!

You can help Safe Haven win some grant money. Visit

www.petco.com/holidaywishes to submit your story and nomination by Oct. 31!

MAIL BAGHere are the terrible twosome getting ready for a nap (or a wrestling match) ya never know...Spock (Buddy) purrs a LOT, and loud. He will lay on your lap for hours if you let him. He talks a lot too, but not usually anything important. He loves to lay by the patio door all

morning, catching the sunlight and observing the birds. Favorite treat: Shrimp and Salmon Feast.

Kirk (Boodah) is more reserved, but occasionally likes to be petted. He is extremely intelligent and turns on the water in the bathroom sink to get a drink. I wish he would learn to turn it off when he was done. He usually greets me at the door when I come home, rubbing my leg. If HE talks, it’s usually important. Sometimes bursts into high speed running up and down the hall without warning.(I have had black and white cats before, and they get their instructions from another planet.)Favorite treat: it doesn’t matter, he is always happy.

Hope you like the photo. Getting the two together isn’t easy...We love hearing how our dogs and cats are doing in their new homes. Please write and

let us know how they are doing.

Hello, just thought I’d drop you a note to tell you how well (Capone) Frankie is doing. He is adapting well and has met the neighbors and loves playing ball with their kids. He listens well and follows commands when needed. He loves his sister and she’s grown fond of him as well. She’s an older dog who has caught her second wind having a playmate to explore the yard and relax around the house with. It’s rare to see one sleeping without the other next to them. Frankie is a bed hog though. I’ve often woke up laying on the edge of my bed because he’s all stretched out laying on his back and he’s pushed me over to the edge. It’s not easy getting him to move over. Once he’s asleep for the night he’s out for the count and doesn’t wake up until morning.

Overall, I couldn’t ask for a better dog. I actually was looking for a smaller dog but am so happy that he was available. You must have taken your time helping train him for he listens well. He sure likes the girls he comes in contact with.

Thanks again for helping him become the dog he is. If you need anything at the shelter please contact me and I’ll do what I can.

Regards, Brian , Brownie and Frankie

Just thought I would send you a couple

pictures of Eddy! He is doing really

well.

We want to thank you so much for Scooter. We love him a lot. His personality has changed, each day he becomes more and more outgoing. On the fourth day we heard his first “bark”. He loves life and his toys. He has a very special, loving personality. It is a joy to have him.

Here is a pic of Leo (was Luther, picture on left) and Emma. Sadly we lost Emma 4 weeks ago to an unknown, rapid illness (overnight and she was gone). We are heartbroken at losing her, but our Leo is a gem.

I wanted to share this news. My family and I adopted Alexandra last September. Her name is now Ghost. My son Hunter is in 4-H and one of his project’s is showing cat’s.

He entered her, and she won Best of Show. Needless to say Hunter was very excited.

Hi Safe Haven,

I wanted to share some photos of Daisy with you. She is spoiled rotten :)

Her and Scooter are getting along so well. She loves the cats more than they like her. They have learned to dodge. We are very happy to have her in our family. Thank you so much for helping us.

Sincerely, Amber and Conner

I’m sorry I didn’t do this sooner but we adopted Taz in June and someone had asked that we send a little email about how he is doing with his new family I have a picture of the 3 dogs together(Taz is in the middle).

Taz is well behaved (except he gets a little rowdy when I’m getting their food ready!) and he has settled in very well. The rest of the family includes Buzzie, Michelle, and daughter Kourtney as well as Maverick (a 5 yr old Yorkie/Maltese), Pugs (a 5 yr old Shih tzu/Maltese) and Onyx ( a 5 yr old cat).

Taz’s little quirk we learned quickly is that he LOVES to bury himself completely under blankets and curl up to nap. We found this out when we “lost” him and he was on the couch with us the whole time but he’s so tiny we didn’t see him curled up under the blankets! Other than that, he is most excited about going for walks to the park up the road. He has adapted well to all the other members of the family and we’re so glad to have him!

Michelle H.

Here is a photo of Bill & Shadow playing tug o’war.

Can you tell he’s having fun? Thanks again …

Hey Sue, Thank you so much for finding sweet Sunny Jo for us, or finding us for her. We are very happy with her and everything about her. We had an enclosed fence installed for her protection and safety. We take her for rides in the car, she is so good. She has also learned a few commands already. She is coming along beautifully. We are happy and proud of her. Thank you again!

Betty & Matt Z. P.S. We take her to “canyon pup cuts” for her “Spa day”

Shadow relaxing at home.
