Bug Observations

An entomologist is a person who studies insects. For this challenge, we want you to be like an entomologist by finding a bug and making a few observations about it. Find a bug (any type, including beetles, flies, caterpillars, centipedes, spiders, and more!) and fill out the bug observation worksheet. If you want, you can create a bug catcher to keep your critter

contained while you make your observations. Upload a picture of your bug observation

form OR type your answers in the response box. You can upload a picture of your bug

too for extra fun!

Campers Need:

• Bug Observation Form (page 6)

• Bug Catcher Instructions (page 7) (optional)

• Empty plastic jar (optional)

Cloud Log

In Job 35:5 God tells Job, “Look up at the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds so high above you.” Clouds can be very beautiful on a sunny day, or a little scary on a stormy day. Sometimes it looks like you could even walk on them, but they are just water droplets that God made. Watch the clouds for at least a week and fill out the chart or write your own list of

the various types of clouds you see each day. Take a picture of your chart or list OR type

all the types of clouds you saw in the response box. Write in the response box about

what your favorite cloud is!

Campers Need:

• Cloud Log (page 8)

• Cloud Guide Link (optional)

Star Constellations

Psalm 147:4 says that God, “determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” Scientists have estimated that there are approximately 1 septillion, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, stars in the universe. Can you imagine knowing the names of 1 septillion stars? But God knows that and SO MUCH MORE! For this challenge, we want you to learn the names of a few groups of stars, or constellations. Using the following apps on a smartphone or the online guide to constellations, find at least 3 constellations in

the sky where you live. In the response box, tell us the 3 constellations you identified and

write about which one is your favorite.

Campers Need:

• Constellation Guide Link — Under “Night Sky,” click on the “summer” tab to see what constellations are in the sky now!

• Android app (optional)

• iPhone app (optional)

• Stargazing Guide (optional)

Make Your Own Bug Catcher

1. Find an old plastic jar (such as from peanut butter, pasta sauce, or nuts) with a lid that

screws on tight

• Note: square or rectangle jars, such as the ones that bulk nuts or couscous come in,

work well for you to view your bug without the curved sides warping your view

2. Use soap and water to clean out the jar well and remove all the labels that you can

3. Poke some holes in the lid for your bug to get fresh air

• You can use a thumb tack, a nail, a nut pick, or another small sharp tool to poke the

holes

• To help poke through the plastic easier, you can have an adult help you heat up the

tool a little over the stove

4. Use the jar to scoop up your bug and carry it inside

5. Add some grass and twigs for your bug to climb on and eat

• Make sure your bug has water in the jar too— you can fill a bottle cap with water for an

easy container

6. Once the lid is back on, keep your bug for a day or two and

make your observations!

Creative S’Mores

S’more are a very popular campfire treat at Camp Li-Lo-Li. With gooey marshmallow, melty chocolate, and crunchy graham crackers, what’s not to love? But there are many more ways to make s’mores! For this challenge, we want you to pick a method for s’more making (microwave, oven, or campfire) and make creative s’mores using at least one ingredient that’s different from the traditional recipe. Upload pictures of your s’mores OR type which flavor combinations you like best in the response box.

Always wash your hands well with soap and water before doing any cooking or baking!

Campers Need:

• S’mores Recipe (page 10)

• Marshmallows, candy bars, graham crackers or cookies

Rock Painting

In Matthew 7:24 it says, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Jesus says that God’s Word is very strong & firm, like the foundation of a house and we are wise if we obey it. Rocks are very hard and remind us of this. Look for some rocks and notice the different kinds, colors and shapes. Try painting them in a way that reminds you of camp. You could try painting the camp logo or something that you like to do at camp. If you use craft paints that are waterproof, you could put them outside in your garden afterwards. Upload a picture of your painted rocks when you’re done.

Campers Need:

• Craft paints, paintbrush, rocks

• Clear acrylic coating (optional)

• Rock painting ideas link (optional)

• Camp Logo tutorial (optional) (page 11)

S’mores - without a campfire Many people have made the traditional s’mores over a campfire, toasting the marshmallow on a stick until it’s gooey and sandwiching it between two graham crackers with a piece of a chocolate bar. Yummy!

But sometimes we don’t have a campfire. Even at Camp Li-Lo-Li, if we make s’mores for an evening snack for lots of campers, we make them in the oven. : )

Here are some ways to make s’mores without a campfire.

Oven S’mores 1. First line a cookie sheet with parchment or foil, then pairs of graham cracker squares (just a

few, or fill the pan!) You will need 2 crackers for each s’more. 2. Place marshmallows (mini or regular large ones) on one side of each pair of graham

crackers and place chocolate on the other graham cracker (chocolate chips or a piece of chocolate bar)

3. Broil for 1-2 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on them! They brown quickly!! They can also be baked at 400º for about 4 minutes, until the marshmallows puff up and the chocolate starts to melt.

4. Remove from the oven, match a marshmallow top to a chocolate bottom and create a sandwich. Be careful! They will be very hot!

Creative S’Mores To mix things up, try one or more of these ideas: • different kinds of cookies in place of the graham crackers (chocolate

chip, fudge stripes, Oreos, etc.)• different kinds of chocolate candy (chocolate mint, chocolate

caramel, chocolate peanut butter cups, etc.)• add more ingredients (peanut butter, caramel, nuts, M&Ms, etc.)

Microwave S’mores 1. On paper towel place 1 graham cracker square.2. Top with chocolate and a marshmallow.3. Microwave on high 15 seconds or until

marshmallow puffs.4. Remove from microwave oven and cover with

another graham cracker.5. Eat like a sandwich.

Page 11

1. Start by drawing a square. 2. In the middle draw a skinny

heart. This stands for the LOVE of Jesus.

3. On the right side, use the curve of the heart and make a candle flame shape with a little wick at the bottom. The flame stands for LIGHT, and Jesus is the LIGHT of the world!

4. On the left side, use the curve of the heart as one side and draw a pine tree shape. The tree stands for LIFE, and Jesus gives us eternal life!

5. Color in the heart and the background of the other shapes and round off the corners and you have a Camp Li-Lo-Li logo!

Helper ChallengesRandom Acts of Kindness

Galatians 5 tells us that the fruit of the Spirit is: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. For this challenge, we want you to practice the fruit of kindness by doing random acts of kindness for people in your home, church, or neighborhood. Do at least 3 random acts of kindness (for at least 3 different

people) to complete this challenge. Take pictures of your kind acts OR write about what

you did in the response box.

Some ideas for acts of kindness: taking someone’s trash cans in from the curb, writing an encouraging note for someone, picking up litter you see in public, returning someone’s cart to the store/cart pen, donating some of your toys to someone in need, writing positive chalk messages on the sidewalk or your driveway

Campers Need:

• Depends on your act of kindness!

Share a Homemade Treat

In Hebrews 13:16, the author reminds us, “do not forget to do good and to share with others…” One way we can do good and share with others is through cooking and baking! For this challenge, find a recipe you’d like to make or use the rice crispy treat recipe we found, and make it for someone else! If you’d like to get fancy, decorate your food in a way that reminds you of camp. You can share your creation with your family, neighbors or friends.

Upload pictures of you making your treats, decorating them, and/or sharing them. OR

write about what you made and who you shared your treats with in the response box.

Always wash your hands well with soap and water before doing any cooking or baking!

Campers Need:

• Rice Crispy Treat Recipe Link (optional)

• If making Rice Crispy Treats: butter or margarine, marshmallows, crispy rice cereal, decorating supplies (optional), 13x9 pan, spatula or wax paper
