'Care home' is the overall term for any home thatoffers residents 24 hour day care. All care homesoffer residents help with personal care, such asbathing and dressing, and some also providenursing care from qualified nurses.

Care homes without nursing used to be calledresidential homes.

They offer the level of personal care that acompetent, caring relative might provide and staffmay, when necessary, ask a community nurse tovisit to give a resident the kind of help that theywould get if they were living in their own home,for example changing dressings or giving injections.

Care homes with nursing used to be callednursing homes.

They must employ qualified nursing staff andensure that there is adequate nursing cover 24hours a day.

A home's registration certificate shows details ofspecialist care they offer.

There are some care homes offering bothtypes of care. These take residents whether or not they need nursing care. These homes may besuitable for couples where only one partnerrequires nursing.

Who runs care homes?Homes listed in the Guide can be run:

� privately

� by a voluntary organisation, charity or otherorganisation within the not-for-profit sector. Inmany cases, we have given the name of thegroup of homes e.g. New Support Options Ltd

� by Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth orSouthampton City Council.

Beds in local authority homes are not available toprivately funded clients.

Care for terminally ill Government policy on palliative and end of life carerecommends that all care homes should be able toprovide this type of care across all existing carecategories. Many homes already have staff trained inpalliative care and if this concerns you, then ask thecare home manager about staff training.

CQC inspections and reports The Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectsresidential homes and publishes its findings in theform of a report on its website www.cqc.org.uk

The report shows simply and clearly how well a carehome is doing against a set of national standards.

Care home associations Some home owners choose to belong to local ornational care home associations. These groups givesupport to members and set standards for thehomes that belong. NCF membership is from thenot-for-profit sector.

Short staysA � in this column indicates the homes that maytake people for short periods as well as long term.Short stays may be referred to as respite care,meaning a period of care away from home for theresident and a break for the carer. Sometimes peopleneed a short stay in a care home to convalesce afterbeing in hospital.

Some homes have designated respite beds, otherswill only take people for short stays if there happensto be a bed available.

Day care for non-residentsFormal day care for non-residents is a speciallyorganised programme of activities, sometimes in aseparate day centre.

Informal day care for non-residents means that theyjoin in the normal daily activities in the home.

Extra Care HousingExtra Care Housing, sometimes known as Assisted Livingor very sheltered housing, combines the comfort, security,support and 24/7 dedicated care team of residential carewith the personal choice and independence of shelteredhousing. Every resident has their own apartment, with theirown front door, one or two bedrooms, living room, kitchen,and fully accessible bathroom. Within each scheme you willfind people with a range of needs from those who are ableto live independently to those who require higher levels ofcare and their partners.

Following the success in building four Extra Care schemes in Andover,Gosport, Fleet and Basingstoke Hampshire County Council, with the helpof grants from the Homes and Community Agency has partnered withBorough Councils and Housing Associations (registered social landlords)in order to contribute towards the building costs of new Extra Caredevelopments. To expand the opportunity to access Extra Care to all olderpeople in the county, Hampshire County Council has committed £45m ofcapital funding to the development of new schemes. The first of these newdevelopments will be opening later this year in Eastleigh. Further newschemes will then be opened in a phased way to provide complete countycoverage by 2019. Extra Care housing is designed to allow you to live asindependently as possible in a home of your own for as long as possible.That means that as your care needs, or the care needs of your partner,change, the amount of care and support you receive will change with it.

With more schemes starting soon, Extra Care is an option that should beconsidered if you:

• feel that you may need the peace of mind and safety of a dedicatedcare team

• want to meet new people and enjoy new things

• need help with some activities, or support coping with dementia, butdon’t want to be separated from your partner

• want to enjoy the benefits of an on site restaurant, but don’t want to losethe option of cooking for yourself

• Need the dedicated care available and enjoy having family, friends orgrandchildren over to stay
