WELCOME TO NORTHWOOD
2 Northwood v Harefield United | Tuesday 4th December 2018
Hello, and welcome back to The Acretweed Stadium this evening; welcome to our supporters new and old, and to all connected with our near neighbours Harefield United FC; we trust they enjoy their stay with us, and have a safe journey home later.
This evening’s fixture is a Middlesex Senior Charity Cup second round tie, this being the first time in six years that we have entered the competition. Three times over the years we have reached the final of this cup, though we are still awaiting our first success at that stage, having lost at the ultimate stage in 1994, 2003, 2005 and 2012. That most recent final reverse will remain in the minds of those Woods supporters who watched the game – we led Ashford Town 3-0 before being pulled back to 4-4 and then losing on penalties; not the club’s finest hour!!The heavy rain at the weekend took its toll of the pitch here, resulting in the postponement of our Bostik League South Central fixture against Chalfont St Peter. Hopefully this evening’s game will go ahead without a problem; no rain was forecasted for today so we should be good to go…The last home fixture to go ahead, over a fortnight ago, saw the points shared with Hertford Town in a 1-1 draw, but it was a game that the Woods should have won, particularly as we missed a last-minute penalty. A promising performance nevertheless, followed by a good 3-2 win at Chipstead last weekend, including two goals from youngster Kyran Worrell. Each of those games also featured a goal from new signing Andrew Ofosu, so a good start with the club for him.Not such a good result at Bedfont Sports last Tuesday evening, unfortunately! Despite a generally good performance by the Woods, missed chances, free headers presented to the home side and a late penalty resulted in a clear-cut 0-3 defeat. Hopefully we shall see the lads bounce back with a win this evening!Next up for the Woods is an away Bostik League fixture at Egham Town next Saturday, 8th December, and seven days later we are back at the Acretweed Stadium when the visitors are our old Middlesex rivals Hanwell Town; kick-off at 3.00 p.m. For this game, local residents with a HA6 postcode can obtain entry for half price by showing a bill confirming their postcode – so please tell your friends and neighbours as we seek to increase our attendances. This Friday, 7th December, we have entertainment for you in @TheWoods, the Northwood FC clubhouse, when we present Christmas Sounds of the Rat Pack, performed by vocalist Ben Marskell. The bar will be available from 7.00 p.m., with the show starting at 9.00 p.m. Tickets on the door cost just £5 - should be a great night and one not to be missed!!Thanks for your support this evening, enjoy the game, and we hope to see you at the Acretweed Stadium again soon!Up the Woods!!

The club was formed in 1868, making it the oldest club in Middlesex, and this their 150th year. In their formative years they played under such names as Harefield Victoria and Breakspear Institute in the local Uxbridge Leagues before merging with Harefield FC in 1934 to become Harefield United, playing in the Uxbridge and District League.By 1947 the club had joined the Great Western Combination, playing at Taylors Meadow and winning the league once in the 1950-51 season. In 1964 the club moved to the Parthenon League, winning the league at the first attempt. They then joined the Middlesex League two seasons later, staying for five seasons, winning the league title four times and the league cup twice. In 1967-8 the club celebrated their centenary by moving to their present ground at Preston Park in Harefield, joining the Spartan League Senior Section in the 1971-72 season, making their debut in the FA Vase in 1974-5 before progressing to Division Two of the Athenian League for the 1975-76 season. The club also made their debut in the FA Cup in 1979-80. The Athenian League folded in 1984, the year the Hares won the League Cup under manager Nobby Carpenter, making them still the current holders! The club then moved to the Isthmian League Division Two North for two seasons, then spent seven years in Division Two South before being relegated to Division Three. After the 1996-97 campaign a lack of funds for ground improvements meant the club had to move back to the Spartan League.A year later they became founder members of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division South, until it was renamed Division One where they finished runners up and won the League Cup, before playing in the Spartan Premier. This spell was the most successful in the club’s history, winning the Challenge Trophy in 2002-03 and the Premier League Cup the following season when they were also runners up in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Under manager Stuart Levy the Hares were league runners up twice, in 2006-07 and in 2008-09 when they missed out on promotion to the Ryman League by one goal difference to Biggleswade Town.
They were relegated to Division One at the end of 2015-16. The current campaign sees first team manager Jason Shaw start his fourth season with the club, looking to gain promotion back to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, with the Hares currently unbeaten in the league and leading the table.
