The Woodridge Local School District Reopening Plan is focused on the health and safety guidance for Ohio’s K-12 Schools as provided by the Ohio Department of Health, Governor DeWine and The Ohio Department of Education. Our plan provides two options for families. Option A is a “return to school” option. Option B is a fully virtual option for those who are not ready or not able to return to school. In addition, we will be fully prepared to transition to remote learning should conditions require schools to be closed. Our reopening plan is focused on the five best practices in Ohio’s Health and Prevention Guidance for Schools. These best practices provide a framework for the reopening of schools while helping students and staff reduce the risk of exposure and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community. The five best practices are:

• Assessing symptoms / health checks • Increased sanitation, disinfection and cleaning • Physical distancing (6 foot standard) • Face coverings / masks • Risk assessment and mitigation

Parents will be required to select either option “A” or option “B” for their child(ren) prior to the start of the 2020 – 2021 school year. All parents will be sent a letter outlining the district’s plans for the 2020 – 2021 school year so that an informed decision can be made. The letter will include a form for the selection process. Once an option is selected, students will be enrolled in that option for a semester at a time. If, at any time and for any reason a student is required to be in quarantine or isolation, the virtual option will be made available to them for the period of quarantine or isolation. In addition to selecting either Option A or Option B, resident parents will be asked to let us know whether or not they will be utilizing school district bus transportation. An “opt-in” or “opt-out” of transportation question will be included on the selection form.

OPTION A: Elementary Grades (PreK – 5): We understand the challenges that the parents of younger students face when their children are not in school. We recognize and appreciate our role in providing a safe, nurturing educational environment that allows parents to work during the week because their child(ren) are in school. To this end, we are prepared to welcome all of our elementary aged students back to school with appropriate safety protocols and restrictions in place following our normal school day schedule Monday through Friday. Elementary class sizes will be kept as low as possible to ensure adequate physical distancing. Masks / face coverings will be worn. We know from our extensive study and measurement of rooms in the building that we can maintain six foot physical distancing protocols by utilizing all available classroom space in the building. Special subject teachers will move from room to room to enable students to remain in their homeroom as much as possible. While breakfasts will be eaten in the classroom, lunches will continue to be served in the cafeteria with appropriate physical distancing applied for assigned seating. Appropriate health and safety protocols will be followed during instructional breaks and recesses scheduled at appropriate times throughout the day. Parents must conduct an assessment of their child’s health before leaving for school each day. Students showing signs of illness must stay home. A comprehensive set of health resources are available on the district website to assist parents with health screenings. Due to the closure of school buildings last spring, Kindergarten Screening will take place by appointment from Wednesday, August 19 – Friday, August 21st. Kindergarten students will begin the school year on Tuesday, August 25th. Middle and High School Grades (6 – 12): While we certainly would prefer to welcome ALL of our middle and high school aged students back to school every day, all day, the space limitations of our two secondary buildings make doing so with appropriate physical distancing protocols impossible. Until conditions allow implementation of our regular school schedule, we will be utilizing a blended learning model for the middle and high school with students in school part of the time and online part of the time. We are splitting our middle school and high school students into two cohort groups. Cohort One will include those students whose last names begin with the letters A – L. Cohort Two will include those students whose last names begin with the letters M – Z. Students in grades 6 – 12 will attend school every other day Monday – Thursday. Cohort One (A-L) will attend school Mondays and Wednesdays. Cohort Two (M-Z) will be in school Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Siblings with different surnames will be permitted to follow the same schedule if so desired.) Students will be required to complete assignments in Google Classroom on the days they are not in school. Fridays will be utilized for virtual class meetings, intervention time, enrichment time, office hours, parent meetings, professional development etc. While in school, students in grades 6 – 12 will follow their normal class schedule. Physical distancing and face covering / mask protocols will be followed throughout our buildings. Parents must conduct an assessment of their child’s health before leaving for school each day. Students showing signs of illness must stay home. A comprehensive set of health resources are available on the district website to assist parents with health screenings.

General Guidelines (K-12) For Option A:

• Keeping our school facilities clean, disinfected and safe is always a priority. However, during this Pandemic, we will be implementing an advanced cleaning and sanitizing regimen. Every night, our maintenance team will sanitize every room in every building and every bus using electrostatic disinfecting equipment. Throughout the school day (and every night), our custodians will be cleaning and sanitizing high touch surfaces. Disinfecting wipes and cleaning supplies will be available in all classrooms and offices.

• Purell hand sanitizer will be available throughout the building, in every classroom, office, cafeteria, entryway, hallways and bus.

• Antibacterial soaps will be available in every classroom and restroom. Regular hand washing protocols will be followed with teacher guidance and instruction.

• All buses will be cleaned every night AND at mid-day.

• Traditional field trips will not occur, however, teachers will be encouraged to plan and utilize virtual options where available.

• Transportation schedules will be altered to ensure appropriate physical distancing on buses. This may mean that normal bus pick-

up and drop-off times become delayed. Multiple “runs” may be necessary in neighborhoods with a large number of bus riders. Students will NOT be marked “tardy” due to the bus schedule. Every effort will be made to develop “normalized” bus schedules as quickly as possible as the year starts so that parents will know when students will be picked up and dropped off. Seating on the buses will be one student per seat however, siblings may sit together on the same seat.

• While we appreciate and recognize the value of volunteers in our schools, for safety purposes during this time, we will not be

admitting volunteers to our buildings during school hours.

• Visitors to our schools and offices will be limited. Parents should call the school office in advance to arrange for any required meetings.

• In addition to the screenings done at home by parents, health screenings will be a regular routine upon arrival at school for

students, staff and visitors. Temperatures will be taken. Those with elevated temperatures or other symptoms of COVID-19 will be denied entry. Students with symptoms will be isolated in the clinic (with supervision) until a parent can come to pick them up. Health protocols provided by our partners from Akron Children’s Hospital and the Summit County Health Department will be implemented and followed throughout the district.

• Should it become necessary, the district will follow guidance and orders of the Summit County Health Department related to

quarantine, isolation, school and/or classroom closings. If Summit County is placed in Risk Level 4 (Purple), our school buildings will be closed and instruction will continue remotely using Google Classroom. (see page 16)

• The district will work with parents and officials from the Summit County Health Department in following the CDC Guidance related

to quarantine and isolation when necessary. Quarantine keeps someone who has been in contact with a person who has COVID-19 away from others. Isolation keeps someone who is sick or has tested positive for COVID-19 without symptoms away from others, even in their own home.

• If a student or employee of the district tests positive for COVID-19 or is exhibiting symptoms of illness, the district will contact the

Summit County Health Department immediately. In the event of a positive case or illness in a district facility, the affected areas will be deep cleaned using CDC approved techniques and cleaning supplies.

• In keeping with recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, we believe that our elementary students need to play

and be active whenever possible during the day. As such, structured, supervised recess “breaks” will occur as part of the daily schedule.

• Social-emotional health and well-being is a primary focus to support student learning. Educators, in collaboration with our school and clinical counseling team, will have access to high quality resources to implement social emotional learning (SEL) practices.

• Students enrolled in Six District Educational Compact Career and Technical Education programs will follow the schedules and

protocols of their program’s host high school. At this time, it appears that all Compact career and technical programs will run on a normal five day schedule. Woodridge transportation will be provided to Compact programs as needed.

A plan is only as good as those implementing it. We know that the 2020 – 2021 school year will be unlike any other in the history of our school community. We recognize the flexibility, sacrifice and hard work that will be required to maintain the traditions of excellence our students deserve and our community has come to expect. As such, we appreciate the contributions, effort, dedication and professionalism that will be required of all of us. Guiding our youth. Planning for the future. Learning for a lifetime.
