10 great reasonsto study at Woodhouse College...

An aspirational collegeWe want you to challenge yourself and we expect you to succeed. Getting into Woodhouse won’t necessarily be easy but by choosing us you will be joining a learning community of like-minded 16-18 year olds who believe in working hard in order to achieve their goals and fulfil their ambitions.

1

Excellent teaching & outstanding results We have excellent highly qualified teachers who are both passionate about their subject and experts in teaching it to your age group. We pride ourselves on being a community of students and staff working together to ensure the success of each individual. The College’s A* to B pass rate is regularly amongst the top two or three colleges in the country because so many of our students work very hard to achieve outstanding results.

2

Academic Excellence in a Caring Community

Wide range of subjects in combinations to suit youWe have over 30 different AS/A level subjects you can choose from. We mainly offer the subjects that university admissions’ tutors want to see in your UCAS application. Most importantly because of our size and dedicated A level timetable structure you can choose the combination of subjects that you really want.

4

High quality specialised A level facilitiesOur facilities are designed to provide the right environment to support 16-18 year olds studying for their A levels. A large modern library centre provides the ideal setting for silent contemplative study. Two new learning zones offer pleasant locations for group work, peer support and accessing learner mentoring. A bright and contemporary social area and an adjoining canteen provide a large communal space for relaxing but also for working in more informal surroundings. The entire College is wi-fi enabled with comprehensive access and a service that allows you to borrow a netbook for a day. Modern and well appointed science labs, art studios, IT suites, dance studios and sports hall offer excellent specialist facilities.

A stepping stone to university and your career We know it is a big step for you to leave your current school where things are familiar and you are well known and to start completely afresh at a new institution. However, it may well be better preparation for university life because it is a fact that students from schools are more likely to drop out from university than those taught at sixth form colleges. This is because at a sixth form college you are treated as an adult and expected to manage your study in a mature and independent way which will better prepare you to plan and be organised for the future.

6

The right step!

Broaden your horizonsChoosing Woodhouse College will provide you with the perfect opportunity to meet a wide range of new people and to make new friends. The new beginning we offer will help you grow as a person and provides you with the opportunity of experiencing a broader range of ideas in a different learning environment to the one you have been used to. By coming to Woodhouse you will be joining a very vibrant, socially mixed and multi-ethnic community.

7

New friends!

Pleasant campus in a good locationThe College is situated on one site in a safe North London suburb and is well served by public transport. Two major bus routes stop outside the College and a number of other major routes pass within five to ten minutes walk from the College. Two underground lines and an over-ground line are also within very easy travelling distance.

The pleasant campus has a lot of communal green space, a floodlit all-weather pitch and a very well maintained mixture of buildings ranging from an 18th century Manor House to a very modern classroom/sports hall block which was completed in 2007.

8

Great location!

An enriching educationWe believe in providing all our students with a broadening education and opportunities to participate in activities and experiences you may not normally have easy access to. We offer a comprehensive range of enrichment courses, sports, volunteering and mentoring opportunities, trips and access to a wide range of speakers. If you want to start up something yourself, just let us know.

9

Extreme activities!

Engaging with our studentsWe believe in our students having a voice about their experiences at College and we want to listen and respond to what you have to say. We engage with you as a student and an adult who has chosen to come to the College as an active learner and not as a pupil who is simply here to be taught. We want you to get involved in and contribute to all aspects of life at the College. Your voice can and should make a difference.

10

Make a difference!

Woodhouse is a Sixth Form College forstudents in the 16-19 age range providinga very wide range of GCE Advanced Level(AS and A2) courses and Applied A Levelsin Business and ICT. The College draws aquarter of its students from its two localPartner Schools – Friern Barnet and TheCompton – but we also attract applicantsfrom schools throughout North London. We work hard to maintain the quality ofprovision that gives the College itsexcellent reputation – its special character. This quality has been recognised by theGovernment: we are one of a smallnumber of colleges to have been awardedBeacon status and Ofsted ‘DesignatedOutstanding’ status.

In which ways is the College special?First, we are a centre of academicexcellence. This year we had a pass rateof 99% at GCE Advanced Level, over 69%of which were at grades A* to B. On thismeasure, the College was the secondbest nationally. The Applied A Levelresults were also very good. Perhapsmore important than this, our value-added scores are consistently good: withstudents generally doing better thantheir entry qualifications would predict.Over 90% of our students go on touniversity.

We are very proud of this, of course, butwe know that our students also value thedistinctive environment that Sixth FormColleges provide. There is much more toeducation, in the broadest sense, thansimple examination results. We endeavourto give all of you, no matter what coursesyou are on, a wealth of otheropportunities and experiences that willstand you in good stead in later life.

You will learn to take more responsibilityfor your own welfare and progress: youwill learn how to learn. This will be donewithin a supportive framework and ifanything does start to go wrong, we willpick it up very quickly and help you to putthings right. Our tutorial, guidance andsupport systems are at the heart of theCollege.

The College offers you an exceptionallywide range of subject choices, packaged to

suit you as an individual. In addition to yourmain programme, you will take part in arange of recreational enrichment studies.Sporting, musical and volunteeringactivities are widely available. TheWoodhouse Challenge will provide youwith the opportunity to broaden yourknowledge and understanding of a widevariety of topical issues.

Our last Ofsted Inspection Report (2007)shows all five areas inspected were giventhe top grade of ‘Outstanding’. This is oneof the best inspection results in thecountry.

Woodhouse is an Associate College ofMiddlesex University which allowsstudents access to a range of HigherEducation experiences whilst they are stillat College.

Set on an attractive campus, the Collegeboasts some of the best facilities in thearea, including recently built Sports Halland Dance Studios, a floodlit All-WeatherPitch, a state-of-the-art Learning ResourceCentre, two new Learning Zones, an OpenAccess Computer Suite, a contemporarysocial area and canteen and modernScience Laboratories and Art Studios.

All said, however, the most special featureof the College is its feeling of community. This is a place where staff and studentsknow and respect each other. We workhard towards the common goal that everyindividual should fulfil his or her potential, and then achieve just a little bit more.

Keith Murdoch

It’sa totally different environment fromschool – you are given greaterindependence and the opportunity to takeresponsibility for your own work. However, that doesn’t mean you are notwell supported – the staff are always athand to advise you and to help you achieveyour goals.

What’s great about Woodhouse is thebalance between work and social life. Allstudents are given the opportunity toparticipate in various enrichments relatingto sports, science, art and a wide varietyof other interesting activities. Students are

also given an active voice in the Collegecommunity through us, the CollegeCouncil.

Woodhouse is a platform for you to meetnew people, form lifelong friendships andmost of all to work hard so that you canfulfil your ambitions.

Woodhouse College Council

Woodhouse College will endeavour toprovide you with a broad and challengingeducational experience that meets yourindividual needs and aspirations. Oursubjects are taught by A Level specialists, and, unlike many other sixth forms we canoffer almost any foreseeable combinationof the subjects listed below.

(* - indicates subjects which can be studiedwithout previous experience of GCSE)

• In the first year at the College, you willstudy four (and exceptionally, five) AS Levelsubjects. Both the choice and the numberof subjects will depend upon your GCSEresults and future career intentions.

• At the end of your first year you will takethe AS examination in each of the subjectsyou have been studying. Progression ontothe A2 part of the subject will bedependent upon passing the AS Level. This emphasis on ‘getting it right’ the firsttime then moving on leads to higherachievement.

• In the second year, you will continue tostudy three (or four) of your subjects atA2 to complete your A Levels. It ispossible to opt to take an additional ASsubject such as Critical Thinking or theExtended Project in your second year.

• You will have the opportunity to improveyour marks by re-taking AS exams at theend of the second year. The College doesnot encourage re-takes of these modulesin January of the second year because thiswill distract you from your A Level coursesat a crucial phase.

• The Applied Double Award A Levels(Business and ICT) run over two years, and are the equivalent to two A Levels.Applied Double Award A Levels areexactly the same standard as ordinary ALevels but with a greater emphasis oncoursework. It is usual to take one ortwo AS Level subjects alongside anApplied course.

• Applied A Levels provide an opportunityto specialise in a vocational subject areawhich you may take forward to HigherEducation or employment.

• AS Level Critical Thinking is offered tostudents during their second year. Thiscourse promotes the development ofthe academic skills required at A Level. These skills include analysing andevaluating evidence, presenting clear, logical arguments and writing withprecision.

• Extended Project Level 3. This is anoptional, voluntary course which allowsyou to pursue an interest of your choicewith supervisory help. It is equivalent tohalf an A Level and most of the work iscompleted in the summer after AS exams.

• AS Level Citizenship is offered tostudents during their second year. Thiscourse combines active participation in

a project with the academic study of thepolitical, sociological and legal aspects ofbeing a citizen.

• Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA)• Higher Sports Leader Award (HSLA)• GCSE Italian

Think carefully about your A Level subjectsbecause they can influence the choices opento you in the future. If you know what youwant to do after your A Levels, then checkthat your combination of subjects is suitable. If you have no fixed plan, then makesure your choices will allow you to keepyour options open. (Please see Results andProgression page.)

It is also important to take subjects whichyou are good at and which you will enjoy.Do not choose a subject simply because afriend is taking it. Do some research, askolder students about their experiences orcontact university admissions tutors foradvice. It is a good idea not to take too manysubjects which are new to you, because eachof them is a bit of a gamble.

This is correct at the time of publication, however, the College reserves the right to make changes to subjects as appropriate.

Woodhouse has a long-standingreputation for its excellent ALevel results. The pass rate thisyear was 99%, with more than69% of these being ‘high’ gradesA*, A or B. In 2012, Woodhousehad the second highest CollegeA*-B percentage in the countryaccording to national leaguetables.

A summary of this year's A Level examinationresults for the College as a whole is given ona separate sheet. Naturally, particular subjectsuccesses vary slightly from year to year, sodepartments have available their individualsubject results for the last few years, whichyou might like to see –just ask!

The College is committed to absolutesuccess but also to ensuring that all ourstudents reach their potential. We havesubscribed for some time to a nationaldatabase (ALIS) which compares the A Leveloutcomes of each student with their GCSEgrades prior to entering the College.Woodhouse has consistently "added value"to its students at a rate above the nationalaverage. This means that, on average, ourstudents achieve better grades than theywould elsewhere.

Applied Courses in Business and ICT –Applied A Levels have a record of high passrates and good progression. Students onthese courses benefit from studying avocational area in depth. 60% of studentswent to university in 2012 to study a relatedcourse whilst others opted to go directlyinto employment with further training.

The majority of our A Level students seekto progress to university. Our teachers, tutors and full time Careers Co-ordinatorare all experts at supporting students withtheir UCAS applications. Consequently, well over 90% of Woodhouse studentssuccessfully obtain a place in HigherEducation. It is, however, very important thatyou choose your A Level subjects verycarefully if you are to maximise the different

types of higher education courses you canapply for. Some university courses mayrequire you to have studied a specific subjectprior to entry, others may not. However, according to the Russell Group ofuniversities, there are some subjects that arerequired more often than others and thesethey refer to as facilitating subjects and, as arule of thumb, you should certainly try andinclude at least two amongst your A Levelchoices. The facilitating subjects are:

BiologyChemistryEnglishGeographyHistoryLanguages Maths and Further Maths Physics

About ten students enter Oxford orCambridge each year, with some 40%attaining places at other Russell GroupUniversities. Woodhouse students are to befound from Aberdeen to Exeter, Aberystwythto East Anglia, and even as far away asAmerica and Japan. 450 former Woodhousestudents started university in 2012.
