Purpose-built ER Mosque Site ConfirmedReporters from the Scottish Government recently released their document on ERC’s local development plan and have shown their support for a mosque facility in the Maidenhill area. For the latest update on the ERC Maidenhill Masterplan see: https://www.facebook.com/ERMosqueCommunityCentreNote that an alternative proposal explored by ERMF, for siting a possible religious facility, as part of a broader ‘mixed use development’ plan for Patterton Farm (green belt) in Newton Mearns, has also been rejected by the Reporter - in favour of the Maidenhill Masterplan.

WEC reaches maximum capacity at both Eid Congregations 2014

Very many thanks to the nearly one-thousand people attending the two end-of-Ramadhan Eid congregations at WEC, and to Shaykh Zain UlAbidin and Dr Asmar Akram for their inspiring talks. Diversity in East Renfrewshire was celebrated through the holding an all-day event, the fourth time this has happened in East Renfrewshire and the first time it has been held in Barrhead.

The 2014 ER Diversity Day was held on Thursday 4th September and over 150 Primary 6 pupils from Carlibar, Cross Arthurlie, Neilston and Springhill and Auchenback primary schools from across East Renfrewshire attended the event at Barrhead Sports Centre.

As in previous years, the high profile event was organised by representatives of the Woodfarm Education Centre, Maccabi GB Scotland, ER Faith Forum, Diversity ER and East Renfrewshire Council’s Active Schools, Sports Services, Education and Equality teams. Further support and sponsorship was provided by a number of organisations including the Scottish Police Muslim Association, Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, UJIA, Interfaith Glasgow and the Rouken Glen Garden Centre.

In the morning the pupils visited an Exhibition of Faiths and Cultures, participated in a diversity themed art competition and developed their team-building skills through a number of sporting activities. In the afternoon, an award ceremony was held and attended by a number of dignitaries including East Renfrewshire Councillors, Officers and Parliamentary colleagues. Pupils from Barrhead High School provided musical entertainment playing the Dholki Drums while pupils from Calderwood Lodge Primary School also supported the event.

Awards were presented to the participating schools, young people, adults, volunteers as well as winning Sports and Art Champions.

The day once again received national recognition from the Scottish Parliament by way of a Parliamentary motion submitted by Ken Macintosh MSP and further supported by MSPs across Scotland.

Chairman of the ER Diversity Day Organising Committee, and WEC Youth Leader, Usman Ali said, “Thank you to Barrhead for being such great hosts. Once again, it is great to see the various schools, organisations and council services working together along with the support of youth and adult volunteers. Our vision, our mission and our dream is that ER Diversity Day becomes a day of great celebration, right across East Renfrewshire, in every home, in every community, in every school, organisation and council service. A day of celebration that is treated just like Christmas, Eid, Hanukah or Diwali. And in time, a day of celebration that can be held right across Scotland.”School staff, Parents and guardians also attended the event as well as adult and youth leaders, who played a vital part in helping to make the day a great success.

The next one for 2015 in planning- contact WEC Youth Leaders to get involved!
