WCC Update

Woodcrest Country Club Proudly Announces the Appointment of New

General Manager, Jason Skinner.

Jason was raised in Chicago, in a family butcher business where he discovered his in-terest in the culinary arts. His passion for food led him to study at Johnson and Wales in Prov-idence, Rhode Island. While studying there, his interest in the “people” side of the business was piqued, leading him to a concentration in Hospitality. Graduating with a B.S. in Hotel and Hospitality Management, Jason honed his skills at a range of hotels including the Sheraton in Hyannis, MA; The Westmark Fairbanks in Alaska, The Marriot in St. Thomas as well as the historic, The New York Athletic Club and its sister property, the yacht club at Travers Island. Proficient in food and beverage management coupled with leadership skills and attention to detail in training and maintaining standards in a club atmosphere, Jason will lead the Wood-crest Country Club team and serve member-ship as The General Manager. We are excit-ed to welcome Jason to Woodcrest in the club’s continued pursuit of greatness.

History of the Holes

It’s time to take a look back in our history book to see how the beautiful Woodcrest course came to be what it is today. Like many Scottish courses, each hole has been named. Remember, back when the holes were named the nines were switched, what was now holes 1-10 is now 10 - 18 and vice versa.

1. Orchard - Once held a view of the old apple orchard, a ves-tige to the Apple Tree Gang and America’s

golfing past.

2. Straightaway - Five fairway traps out of bounds to the right and white pines

to the left, reminds the golfer to keep his ball

straight.

3. The Island - Aptly named not for its sur-

rounding water, but the green was once prone to

sinking and had great dif-ficulty in growing grass. It was built on an unde-composed matter which

drained poorly.

4. The Woodcrest - The most picturesque hole!

5. The Hillside - The green is bordered by three sand traps.

6. The Hook - This hole has a left to right

dogleg making accurate placement essential.

7. The Dunes - A long par three. The green navigates through three sand traps.

8. Big Bend - A pine grove to the left, and

apple trees once to the right, now give way to

the practice hole.

9. All American - This par three was orig-inally the finishing hole,

and so named for a three way bet: even up,

whit a half-stroke hand-icap and a full-stroke

handicap.

History of the Holes

10. The Meadow - Pine trees line each side of the fairway and bun-kers are on either side of

the green.

11. The Narrows - A long narrow fairway from the tightly bor-

dered tee box.

12. The Oaks - The longest par four and

one of the best on the course!

13. The Plateau -An uphill par three that is a challenge for

even the pros!

14. Panorama - This hole demands length and accuracy to avoid “Gal-

man’s Gulch.”

15. The Links - Dogleg to the left with a small green bordered

in the rear by down-ward sloping high

rough and on the sides by two traps.

16. The Willows - Named for the tall

weeping willow over-hanging the pond, this hole is one of the two most diffiicult, fast,

and undulating greens.

17. Cliffside - A beautiful hole with a

lofty green. 18. Long John - The final hole at Woodcrest

demands length and accuracy.

We reached out to Marco DiBattista for our new member spotlight feature!

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Pennsauken. I graduated from PHS in 1994 and I played soccer.Tell us about your family. My wife is Lemonia DiBattista, and our two children Sophia, 7 and Juliana, 5. Both girls play soccer and Sophia also plays basketball, tee ball, and participated in the Woodcrest weekly golf clinic this summer. Juliana will do the same as she gets older. My wife enjoys golf but has not found the time to play this year. What activities and events have your family enjoyed at Woodcrest? My family spent a lot of time at WCC this summer. They enjoyed the pool quite a bit! I can bring my kids to the course while I practice because they love riding in the golf cart and they know Pete will hook them up with ice cream. It is a very family friendly environment. What brought you back to Woodcrest last year? Well, I first heard WCC had finally put a membership package out at the end of the 2013 season. A few friends and I were waiting to see the details of the mem-bership because we were looking for a new club. Once we saw all the Woodcrest had to offer, (pool, locker room, bag storage, practice facility, tennis, and the best course in South Jersey) it was an easy decision. Perfect timing for me as well, I needed somewhere my family could spend time while I get to enjoy playing golf. I have to admit it has worked out better than I could have imagined. My wife and kids love going to the golf course. Do you have a favorite hole at WCC? Number 18. It’s a great finishing hole that has everything you could ask for. Tough tee shot, tough layup, water hazard, and a tricky putting green. What 3 words would you use to describe Woodcrest and your experience? Welcoming, Challenging, and Enjoyable.
