This article is about the Eurasian leaf warbler. ForAmerican wood warblers, see New World warbler.

The wood warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix) is a com-mon and widespread leaf warbler which breeds through-out northern and temperate Europe, and just into the ex-treme west of Asia in the southern Ural Mountains. Thiswarbler is strongly migratory and the entire populationwinters in tropical Africa.

    1 Habitat

    Eggs, Collection Museum Wiesbaden

This is a bird of open but shady mature woodlands, suchas beech and sessile oak, with some sparse ground coverfor nesting. The dome-shaped nest is built near theground in low shrub. 6 or 7 eggs are laid in May; theremay be a second brood. Like most Old World warblers, this small passerine is insectivorous.

2 DescriptionThe wood warbler is 1112.5 cm long, and a typical leafwarbler in appearance, green above and white below witha lemon-yellow breast. It can be distinguished from sim-ilar species, like the chicha P. collybita and the willowwarbler, P. trochilus by its yellow supercilium, throat andupper breast, pale tertial edges, longer primary projec-tion, and by its shorter but broader tail.It is a summer visitor to the United Kingdom, seen fromApril until August. It has declined there in recent years;it is now very rare in Ireland.

3 SongsIt has two song types, often (but not always) given al-ternately; a high-pitched uid metallic trill of increasingtempo pit-pit-pitpitpitpt-t-t-ttt lasting 23 seconds, anda series of 3 to 5 descending piping notes of lower pitchpi-pi-pi. The contact call is a soft piping note, sim-ilar to the second song type, but shorter and given singly,"pi".
