who we areA Note from Scott Boettger, Executive Director

Doris Tunney with dogs Lucky and Chance

oris has been a full-time resident of the Wood River Valley since 2002, and says, “I would not

live anywhere else.” She has been a member of the Wood River Land Trust Board of Directors for the past 6 years.

Retired from the practice of pediatrics and adoles-cent medicine, she was Chairman of the Departments of Pediatrics at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California.

She presently ranches and grows high quality alfalfa on her beautiful Double Springs Ranch in the Pahsimeroi Valley. In 2005, Doris donated a conserva-tion easement on the ranch to the Land Trust, and noted at the time of the gift, “The land is very unique and special. I knew I had to protect it.”

Although she is actively involved with many outstanding charitable organizations, the ones clos-est to her heart are those that help kids. She sits on the Board of the Share Your Heart Ball in support of Camp Rainbow Gold, and the Advisory Council of Camp Rainbow Gold. She is founder and direc-tor of the Camp Rainbow Gold College Scholarship Program, which has sent cancer survivors to college over the past 4 years. Doris is also a founding member of the Wood River Women’s Charitable Foundation, and is on the Advisory Council to United Cerebral Palsy in California.

All of us with the Land Trust are extremely proud to have Doris on our Board of Directors. m

Meet our BoardDoris Tunney

Scott helps son Gunner land a nice steelhead

he secret is way out of the bag about fall in the Wood River Valley. Hemingway’s famous line, “best of all

he loved the fall…,” has become a local mantra, and the warm days, cool nights, and few crowds in the fall are a well-known bounty. But, even though I have been in the valley for 14 years, what I have recently come to embrace is the hard beauty of the Rocky Mountain spring. It’s easy to complain about the mud season, but our spring, as slowly as it unfolds, holds wonders found few other places.

Just for starters: The awe-inspiring beauty and power of a spring snow storm whipping the Sawtooths. The chat-tering colorful return of migrating birds through the valley. A crisp cold sunrise over the Boulder Mountains. The unworldly pops and drumbeats of sage grouse during their annual spring mating rituals. Steelheading on the snowy banks of the Salmon River, and helping my son land his. And as the snow finally retreats, a dazzling display of wild-flowers and the lure of tasty wild mushroom to come.

So when others are heading out of the valley for points warmer this mud season, take heart and join me in enjoying the wonders of our local spring. Visit one of the Land Trust’s preserves like the Draper Wood River Preserve and discover what spring has in store along the Big Wood River. Please stop by our office and pick up a Preserves & Projects map or go to our website, woodriv-erlandtrust.org. Just be sure to get out there. A Wood River Valley spring offers experiences few will ever get a chance to enjoy, and I guarantee you will never forget. m

Leave Your Footprint: Help us build the Croy Creek Wetlands Boardwalk!

Boardwalk, Continued from cover

In 2008, the Land Trust removed remains of the City of Hailey’s old dump at the site. Hauling out large items such as appliances, years of fill, and other trash returned the elevation of the area to a more natural floodplain level. It is possible that the wetlands will expand, especially if some eager beavers decide to help out, adding important habitat for wildlife.

During high water flows and sheet flooding events, these riparian areas slow water down and act as a kind of sponge to help recharge the aquifer. The new vegetation that the Land Trust staff and volun-teers planted in 2009 will filter sediments and absorb excess nutri-ents, improving the quality of water as it drains into the Big Wood River.

The Boardwalk is just part of the Land Trust’s long-term goals to balance the public benefits of experiencing nature with the benefits of healthy riparian and wildlife habitat. m

e loved having Carla here in

the office a couple days a week for a month this winter. We put her to work on the long-overdue task of scanning in photo prints. Her efficiency—considering the size of the job—was amazing. She is a smart warm-hearted young woman and we enjoyed having her here.

She wrote a note about her experience:

“My name is Carla Orozco. I’m from Costa Rica. I live with my parents and my little sister. I’m 17 years old and just started college. I’m studying English and I know that being an interpreter is what I want to do with my life.

I was recently in Hailey for a month because I have family there, and I wanted to go and practice English. I was helping at Bellevue elementary and tutoring high school kids. I’ve always liked to volunteer and help other people, and when I saw the story in the paper saying that the Land Trust was looking for volunteers, I knew I had to go. Since I was staying for such a little time, they put me right away in the office.

I fell in love with the organization and the Valley, and now I know that I have a second home there. I hope I can go back over the summer, so I don’t freeze to death again!” m

Jim Feldbaum

im is a much-appreciated—and busy—Wood River Land Trust volunteer. Not only has he helped us prep the

newsletter for mailing, but he’s a pro at pulling weeds (like tough burdock at Croy Creek), collecting sagebrush seed, and assisting at Land Trust events. All of us enjoy his sense of humor and companionship.

Jim was born in Philadelphia and attended Penn State University, graduating with a liberal arts degree. After col-lege, he signed on as crew on a windjammer in the Virgin Islands and lived the yachting life from the Caribbean to Maine before landing the opportunity to help design, build, and captain a large yacht in Viareggio, Italy.

In search of a “more socially responsible career,” he attended Southwestern Medical School and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. He retired from a 20-year private practice of Internal Medicine in Florida in 2001 to begin a consulting career helping hospitals and physicians take advantage of the expanding universe of medical information technology.

About his involvement with the Land Trust, Jim notes, “What began as a back-yard battle with noxious weeds evolved into a full-scale project to return a badly damaged riparian area to a healthy native landscape. With guidance from the Sawtooth Botanical Garden and Wood River Land Trust, my Hailey yard earned the designation ‘Trout Friendly.’ My re-kindled love for the outdoors and my appre-ciation for the good work of the agencies working to protect and improve the natural environment of the Wood River Valley have enthused my volunteerism.” m

ood River Land Trust contracts an independent audit each year with a certified public accounting firm. A

copy of our last audit (3/1/2008 – 3/31/2009) is available upon request. Because we recently changed our fiscal year, the audit covers 13 months.

Your financial support, through membership contributions and donations for projects, makes our work possible. Op-erating costs for fundraising and administration were only 10% of our expenses, which means the overwhelming ma-jority of your dollars support our programs and projects.

n March 5, 2010, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that the greater sage grouse

was indeed facing extinction—but would not present-ly be listed on the Endangered Species List. Instead, the agency struck a compromise and gave the Western bird a “warranted but precluded” level of protection, and will be placed on a list of candidate species for consideration of future inclusion on the endangered species list.

As its name implies, sage grouse require sagebrush landscapes, found primarily in the western states of the country, for cover and forage to survive. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar acknowledged that sage grouse are in jeopardy due to mining, ranching, and other activities, and said that state agencies will be instructed to provide stronger management of sage grouse habitat. Agencies like the Bureau of Land Management will continue to manage the birds’ habitat under the guidance of its Sage Grouse Conservation Strategy.

In 2004, Wood River Land Trust purchased the Square Lake property south of Timmerman Hill to protect the sage grouse population and historical breeding ground, known as a ‘lek’, where the males perform a dramatic mating dance in early spring. Land Trust projects planned for protection of sage grouse at Square Lake include restoration of habitat, protection of water sources, fencing to exclude cattle, and, of course, advancing public knowledge about such wildlife conservation efforts.

oAn Icon of the West

ecently, Bruce Tidwell, owner and manager of Building Material Thrift Store, was contacted by St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center

to pick up surplus office furniture at their former Hailey Medical Clinic. While the crew was loading the truck, Bruce was asked if BMTS could

use an x-ray machine. Ever the optimist, Bruce replied, “If you’re serious, I’m sure we can find a home for it!” Soon after, he heard that Hailey Mayor Rick Davis and the Rotary Club were shipping surplus medical equipment to Vietnam. After contacting Rick, it turned out that the timing was per-fect—Rick was trying to set up an imaging clinic in an impoverished area of Vietnam.

The BMTS crew has a lot of experience removing pianos, large cabinets, even houses, but they had yet to tangle with 1,000 pounds of medical x-ray equipment. Mike Story was recommended to safely disconnect the power to the unit, and he generously agreed to do the sensitive work at no charge. The x-ray equipment was carefully moved, and is now in storage while the Rotary Club accumulates additional medical supplies to send to Vietnam.

As Bruce notes, “We are a generous community—to have donors like St. Luke’s and people like Rick Davis and Mike Story who volunteer their time out of the goodness of their hearts.” m
