Adobe Acrobat Reader Troubleshooting Guide
If you can read this page, your Acrobat Reader program is working correctly! But you may still have problems or specific issues, such as printing and saving your downloadable file.
My printer won’t print the text correctlyAlmost all printing problems are due to not enough free system resources memory. The files are very memory intensive because they include graphics, text, and photos. Close all other programs/applications and print directly out of the Acrobat Reader program, not your Web browser.
Patterns are not printing full-sizeMake sure your printer is set to print at 100 percent and that “print to fit” is not checked. These settings are selected in the printer setup or printer options.
I can’t save my file now that it’s downloadedYou must save the plan when you download the file. Download the file again, except this time try right-clicking on the red download button. A menu window will open. Select “Save target as” or “Save link as” to save the file to your hard drive. Once saved, you can open it up with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

mr. wiggles...he’s one swinging dragon
Kids will love tugging on this 3'-long dragon, thanks to his flexiblecenter core of canvas. That pliability gives Mr.Wiggles a mind of hisown as his head and tail swing to and fro in a random fashion.

1Crosscut a ‡×9‹" board 10' longto form nine 12"-long blanks. Set
aside the leftover piece for use later.
2Referring to the Cutting Diagramand Drawing 1a, tilt your
tablesaw blade, and bevel-rip thehead blanks (A), tail blanks (B),midsection blanks (C), and neck andtail blanks (D) to the widths listed inthe Materials List. Note that parts Aand B need a bevel on one edgeonly; parts C and D require a bevelon both edges. Pencil the part letteron each piece after cutting it to aidin laying out the dragon later.
3Cut two pieces of ‹" plywoodto 12×37‹" to form top and
bottom carriers. Apply double-faced tape to the bottom carrier, where shown on Drawing 1.Remove the tape backing.
4Starting with a head blank (A),place the first layer of parts
facedown on the bottom carrier in theorder shown. Position the parts firmlyagainst each other and square withone long edge of the plywood.Designate this the bottom edge.
5To ensure perfect alignment of allof the parts, position the second
layer of parts faceup on the first layer(not on the top carrier) in the sameorder and with the edges aligned.Apply four strips of double-facedtape across the parts, and remove thebacking. Now place the top carrier inposition, and firmly press down on it toadhere the top layer of parts. Lift offthe top carrier, and set it aside.
6Cut a 13×38‹" piece of 12-ounce, unbleached, 100% cotton
canvas. (We cut the canvas oversizeto allow for shrinkage as the gluedries.) Using a foam paint roller, apply a light, even coat of whitewoodworker’s glue to the exposedfaces of the bottom carrier’s partsand to one side of the canvas.Center and lay the canvas (glueside down) on the glued parts, andsmooth it out.
7Apply glue to the top of thecanvas and to the
exposed faces of thetop carrier’s parts.
A
Position the top carrier on thecanvas, making sure the headblanks (A) of both carriers matchup. Clamp the assembly as shownin Photo A, and let it set overnight.
Shape and free thedragonNote: If you’d prefer a full-sizepattern rather than upscaling ourgridded pattern, see the BuyingGuide at the end of this article forthe dragon hardware kit, whichincludes a ready-to-use pattern.
1Make a gridded dragon patternby first taping sheets of paper
together to form a 12×37‹"piece. Draw 1" squares across theentire surface.
2Referring to the quarter-sizegridded dragon pattern on
Drawing 3, draw the dragon’soutline on your gridded sheet, andmark centerpoints for its nose andwheel-axle holes, and the locationfor an eye bracket (E). Draw thedragon’s outline by first plotting thepoints where the pattern lines crossthe grid lines; then draw lines toconnect the points. (A French curvehelps in doing this.)
3Remove the clamps and 2×4sfrom the laminated assembly.
Apply spray adhesive to the back of thepattern, and adhere it to the top carrier, aligning the pattern with the first andlast parts C of the lamination, whereshown on Drawing 1.
4With the carriers in place, drill a‹" hole for the nose and two fl"
holes for the wheel axles through thecarriers and dragon, where shown onthe pattern. Then, bandsaw the dragonto rough shape with a ‹" blade.Switch to a ¤" blade, and cut to finalshape, making relief cuts wherenecessary, as shown in Photo B.Using a fi"-diameter sanding drum inan oscillating spindle sander or a drill
Clamp the laminated dragon with 2×4s spaced on edge todistribute the pressure across the assembly.

press, sand the edges to remove thesaw marks.
5Separate the bottom carrierfrom the lamination, and
remove the tape. Chuck a chamferbit in your router. Starting at theback of the dragon’s head andworking to its tail, chamfer alongits top edges, where shown onDrawing 2. To avoid chip-out,make three passes, cutting deeper
with each pass. Switch to a ›"round-over bit, and round overthe dragon’s bottom edges, whereshown.
6Reattach the bottom carrier tothe lamination with two strips of
double-faced tape. Remove the topcarrier and the tape. Rout the edges,as you did before, as shown inPhoto C. Then, remove the bottomcarrier and tape, freeing the dragon.
Add the details
1Plane the leftover board that you setaside earlier to fl" thick. Then, cut
a Œ×6" blank for forming the eyebrackets (E).
2Photocopy the full-size eye-bracket pattern on Drawing 4.
Trim the pattern, and adhere it tothe blank with spray adhesive.Bandsaw and sand the Á" radiusat each end of the blank, whereshown on the pattern. Drill a ‹"hole fi" deep at the centerpoints ofthe radii. Lightly sand the edges ofthe blank. Then, crosscut a Œ"-long eye bracket from each end. Now, glue the brackets to thedragon’s head, where shown onDrawing 2 and on the dragonpattern, with the holes facingforward.
3Drill a ˛" hole ‹" deep and 90°to the chamfered surface on both
sides of the dragon’s head for itsaxle-peg ears, where shown. Glue apeg in each hole.
4Cut two 8"-long wheel axlesfrom a fl"-diameter birch or oak
dowel. Sand them to fit thedragon’s axle holes. Mark thecenters on the axles’ ends, then drilla 7⁄64" hole 1" deep in each end.
5Clamp a 2‹"-diameter rollerball in a handscrew with the
predrilled hole facing up. Drill a‰" hole through the ball centeredon the hole. Switch to a ‡"Forstner bit, and enlarge the hole
The U.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission recommendsthat for children under 36 monthsof age, toys with pull cords longerthan 12 inches not haveattachments on their endsbecause they can becometangled, form a loop, and cause
serious injury. If a child inthis age range will haveaccess to this toy, eitheromit the dragon’s pull-
cord handle or keep thecord length to 12" or less.Although this dragon is a toughcreature, it does have limitations.Children should avoid picking itup by the end of the tail, as itcould tear off.
Keep children and the dragon safe
When cutting into tight areas, make a reliefcut to facilitate waste removal and provideblade clearance for cutting the tight radius.
With the bottom carrier in place and the topcarrier removed, chamfer the top edges andround over the bottom edges.

Finishing touches
1Sand the dragon to 220 grit, andremove the dust. Apply a latex
primer to all surfaces. Sand lightlywhen dry.

3Fit the roller balls on the axles, and drive a #8×1fi" brass
flathead wood screw through eachball and into the axle. Tighten thescrews just enough so the balls turnfreely without wobbling.
4Make a handle by crosscuttinga 3" length of fl" dowel,
chamfering the ends, and drillinga ‰" hole through the center toreceive the leather bootlace, where shown on Drawing 2. Drillthe same-size hole through thecenter of the front leg, whereshown on Drawing 2a. Apply aclear finish to the dowel.
5Knot one end of a 36" length ofleather bootlace, thread the
other end through the handle, andknot again behind the handle.Secure the other end of the lace in
