• An adhesive, also known as glue, is a material, typically liquid or
semi-liquid, that adheres or bonds items together. Adhesives come
from either natural or synthetic sources.
• Wood joinery is one of the most basic concepts in woodworking.
• If one didn't have the ability to joint two pieces of wood together in asolid fashion, all woodworking pieces would be sculptures, carved out
of a single piece of wood.
• However, with the many varied types of wood joinery, a woodworker
has a number of different joints in his arsenal from which to choose, based upon the project.
• If you master these wood joinery concepts, you'll be well on your
way to becoming a very accomplished woodworker.

Wet adhesives
• Wet adhesives are applied to only one side of the assembly, which is thenimmediately stuck to the other side. The parts need to be held together whilethe solvent evaporates. In "solvent-free" adhesives, the carrier substance iswater. Wet adhesives dry best when used with open-pored materials.
Contact adhesives
• Contact adhesives are applied to both sides of the assembly. After adesignated evaporation time the parts are put together for an immediatebond which can rapidly resist stress.
Reaction adhesives • Reaction adhesives are adhesives that harden as a result of a chemical,
physical or catalytic reaction. Depending on the type of reaction, theseadhesives may be single- or two-component adhesives.

• A longitudinal edge joint formed by fitting together rabbeted
boards.
Double Rabbet
Cut on both mating ends or
edges of the work piece.
Overlap Rabbet
Cut on one board so it will fit over the
entire square end or edge of anotherboard.

ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE
• Used in the furniture business because they
are strong enough (because more glue
area) to put up with the constant forces of
opening and closing.
• Takes some time to set up
• These joints are Rabbet joints are easy to
make if you have power tools that can
ensure precise measurements
• Requires more skills
• Hides some end grain

Mortise & tenon joint
Disadvantages - Time consuming to make
Uses - Hidden furniture joints
Advantages - A very strong and versitile
joint
Dowel joint
Advantages - quick to make and very
strong
Disadvantages - Needs a jig to be used
to drill parts accurately
Uses- Hidden furniture joints

Butt joint
Advantages - easy to make, especially
with mitre saw
Disadvantages - weak- needs to be
strengthened with nails or screws
Uses- rough construction work such as
fencing & model making
Mitre joint
Advantages - neat and an attractive joint
Disadvantages - weak unless reinforced,
needs mitre saw to make accurately
Uses- picture frames & small boxes

Corner housing joint
Advantages - quick and easy to cut with
saw; fairly strong
Disadvantages - can be unsightly, best if
reinforced with screws or dowels
Uses- Hidden furniture joints
Comb finger joint
Advantages - very strong to to surface
area being glued
Disadvantages - Needs a jig to be cut
accurately
Uses- drawers and corners of boxes
frames

Dovetail joint
Advantages - strong and a flexible joint-
good for natural timers
Disadvantages - takes a long time tocomplete
Uses- drawer corners
Housing joint
Advantages - strong joint as the materials
interlock- glue provides added
strength
Disadvantages - time consuming to make-
accurate cutting required using a chisel
or can use a router for more speed
and consistency
Uses- shelves or division in a box.

ADHESIVE
• Polyvinyl Acetate
EXPLAINATION
• Probably know it AS white glue/aliphatic resins
• strong-binding and water-soluble.
• Best used on smaller jobs where it can be applied in coolertemperatures so it doesn't soften too much.
• Removal and cleaning of this wood glue requires just soap and warmwater.

PVAc is primarily a synthetic resin polymer, which, due its non-
polar nature, is insoluble in water, oils, fats, or gasoline. On theother hand, it is soluble in alcohols, ketones, and esters.

Hot-melted adhesives
• These are available in the form of sticks, paste, powder,
granulate, mesh and film. They contain no solvent. No mixing or
dosing is usually necessary. They are melted by applying heat.
Two-component reaction adhesives
• These are adhesives that, depending on their type, are made of
components in liquid, paste or powder form. The componentsmust usually be mixed in exactly the stated proportions.

• PRF adhesives are classified as thermosetting polymers and are
produced by a condensation polymerization between
formaldehyde, phenol and resorcinol.
• Uses for load bearing constructions, outer doors, dovetail joint
• 2or 3 system(glue + hardener)
• Hot and cold press
• Dark glue joint
•
Very high heat resistance• Highest water and chemical resistance among wood adhesive

• Polyurethane glues are great for strength and the efficient
choice for outdoor projects.• If gluing end grain, polyurethane glue will make a strong
joint. It is more expensive than standard wood glue in
addition to other drawbacks.
• Polyurethane glue expands as it dry, which means it shouldnot be used in excess. Additionally, gloves need to be worn
when using it and adequate ventilation needs to be
available.
• Drying time is approximately 45 minutes, and clamped piecesneed to remain clamped for six hours.

Joining wood: Frame joints
• Choosing a suitable joint for a frame is important as many
structure that are manufactured often require a load to be
supported. In the case of a beach chair the joint will support
both a static and dynamic load so a strong interlocking type
joint is required.
• A well fitting frame joint often requires very little adhesive to
be used to secure. Frame joints are most commonly used on
chairs, doors and tables.
