Company Overview Vaasan Vesi - Vaasa, FinlandVaasan Vesi manages the water supply, incl.acquisition, cleaning and distribution ofwater, as well as the water sewerage andwaste water treatment of 60.000inhabitants in the city of Vaasa at theWestern coast of Finland in the municipalityarea of 400 km². Company employs 60people and consists of 4 divisions: Financialand Administrative department, R&D, watersupply department and cleaning anddistribution department. Company’s business concept is, withprinciple of sustainability, to secure theuninterrupted water and wastewatermanagement on its operations area. Vaasan Vesi follows continuously, withcustomer-oriented approach, customer’sneeds and expectations and reacts withneeded changes. All development andbuilding projects are done consideringthe inhabitants and the environment.

Wonderware System Platform serves as theautomation and reporting system for the watersupply and sewerage of the city of Vaasa. System

Platform offered good support for quick projectmanagement and also allows a firmly functioningdecentralized architecture in which different ways oftransfering data and controling devices by differentsuppliers is used.

Vaasan Vesi manages the water supply, incl. acquisition,cleaning and distribution of water, as well as the watersewerage and waste water treatment of 60.000inhabitants in the city of Vaasa at the municipality area of400 km². The automation system of the water supplysystem of the city was decided to be rebuilt at the early2000s. An exploratory study on the exchange of theautomation system of the water works of Vaasan Vesi andthe refinery of the Pått area was initiated. Engineeringcompany Avecon Oy was chosen to carry out theexploratory study and the project itself.

The exploratory study included getting acquainted withthe current system, defining of the objectives andcomparing different automation systems. Based on theexploratory study, an Ethernet-based automation conceptof PC software and PLC control devices was chosen withwhich an easy connectivity and expandability to differentenvironments may be reached.In particular, the project was challenged by the demandof the customer for the exchange of a new system to theon-going water works and the process without stoppages.

Furthermore, it was required that the maintenance of thesystem needs to be anticipating and the technicalsupport is easy to eliminate stoppages during operatingtime.After technical and commercial readings by the city, theproject was initiated.The Wonderware System Platform is suitable for controland reporting of highly decentralized processes. Forthese reasons it was chosen as the automation andreporting system of Vaasan Vesi.

The whole project was carried out before the anticipatedschedule and the system was brought mainly into use in 8months from the decision making of establishing the project. During the initial 1.5 month stage, the functionality of thesystem was secured by the around-the-clock duty duringwhich not a single contact was received by the person onduty.

Secured Ethernet manages transfer ofdataThe automation system of Vaasan Vesi consists of sevenprocess stations, which have I/O connectionsdecentralized to the field with the help of substations.Seven PLC controllers serve as process stations and eightseparate PLC controllers serve as decentralizationstations.The communication of the system is totally Ethernet-based. The connection between the process stations andthe decentralization stations has been installed withoptical fibre to reach good reliability. Instead of separatefibre converters, Hirschmann Ethernet switches weredeveloped into automation use and equipped withoptical fibre ports. The redundancy of the Ethernetnetwork is provided by intelligent Hirschmann switchesthat have been cabled to the ring topology.

Wonderware System Platform serves asthe database of the applicationWonderware Application Server, a decentralizedapplication database is used for monitoring and reportingof the process. The displays are accomplished by theInTouch HMI visualization software. Two Wonderwareworkstations, functioning redundantly, take care of theconnections linked with the process. Operators take careof the supervision and control of the process throughthese workstations. In addition, operators have a mobileworkstation at hand, which can be used to command theprocess at different places as well as outside of the waterworks. A separate reporting work station saves themeasurements of the process in the WonderwareHistorian database for examination later on. For repor -ting, AvecReport developed by the Avecon for theWonderware environment and the ActiveFactorysoftware have been used. Changes in the system can bemade at the reporting or separate development station.Moreover, a broadband remote connection to thedevelopment station is used and thus the control andprogramming of the system is possible via the internetfrom the remote workstation of the person on duty orthrough a wireless connection.

was carried out without processing stoppages. Similarly, itis easy to configure and to test alterations to be doneafterwards outside the process and to transfer them tothe on-going application after that. During the project, itwas possible to create control targets as objectsduplicated and parameterized to the system, whichreduced project time and development mistakes.

The Wonderware System Platform has ready-to-useinterfaces to all significant control devices by differentsuppliers, which facilitates project management andallows extensions to desired devices.The Wonderware System Platform supports the decen -tralized structure architecture of the target well and italso allows flexible remote connections to different usergroups. With the Wonderware System Platform, thedesired back-up and information security levels forcontrols as well as reporting may be reached.

User experiences by Vaasan Vesi arepositiveAccording to the representatives of Vaasan Vesi theproject succeeded well. “The project has been a great

success,” Operations Manager of Vaasan Vesi, RubenHerrgård states. “We are satisfied with planning as well asrealisation of the project,” Instrument Technician Per-EricLindh adds, “Among other things, the advantages of thenew system include reliability, functionality and clear controland reporting. The decentralised network structure and, thecapability to store large amounts of information allow highsystem availability and capability for future expansion.”

The automation and reporting system of Vaasan Vesi wasimplemented by the Wonderware System IntegratorAvecon Oy, supported and trained by WonderwareFinland at different specification and project phases.

Easy GSM SMS controls to theapplicationGSM-Control (made by Klinkmann, Finland) is anadvantageous SMS gateway PC software that provides aneasy wireless connection to automation and reportingapplications. The software is installed to the WonderwareSystem Platform or InTouch HMI, etc. through theinterface of DDE/OPC/DAS, It takes care of configurationof SMS messages, messaging control and reporting of theapplication.

The PC with the GSM-Control software is connected tothe GSM/GPRS network with the help of the GSM/GPRS-modem. GSM-Control delivers wireless alarms,measurement messages, default values and differentreceipts directly to the users’ mobiles, to control devicesequipped with the GSM/GPRS modem (e.g. PLC), or toanother PC workstation.

M90 GSM-Controller is a compact miniPLC controldevice, which includes an own user interface and ready-to-use commands for SMS, GSM-data, GPRS andEthernet-based transfer of data.
