FACTS ABOUT MACHU PICCHU

In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti.

Machu Picchu has been also called the "Lost City of the Incas“.

Machu Picchu has been the most familiar icon of Inca civilization.

TIMELINE TO ILLUSTRATE WHEN WONDER WAS CONSTRUCTED

Around 1450 The Incas built Machu Picchu.

1572 It was abandoned as a belated result of the Spanish Conquest.

1911 It was brought to international attention by the American historian Hiram Bingham.

By 1976 Thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored.

1981 Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary .

2007 Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.

Current The restoration work continues to this day.

WHO BUILT MACHU PICCHU?

Machu Picchu was built by ten thousand men or more.

Most of them were labourers involved in dragging stones and setting them.

Few were skilled workers who shaped stones.

WHAT CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES WERE USED?

Ashlar(polished dry-stone walls of regular shape) was used in the finish.

Some Inca buildings were constructed using mortar.

WHAT CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES WERE USED?

Doors and windows are trapezoidal and tilt inward from bottom to top.

Walls do not rise straight from bottom to top.

MACHU PICCHU’S LAYOUTThe site is roughly divided into an urban sector and an agricultural sector, as well as the upper town and the lower town. The temples are part of the upper town, the warehouses the lower.

In this building they put many pieces of pottery to equilibrate the position of the sun.

This room, like Temple of the Sun were dedicated to Inti, their sun god and greatest deity.

Main Temple The deity which

was worshipped here is not known, though there is speculation that it may have been Wiraqocha, an indivisible Andean god and the supreme Incan deity.

Temple of the Condor

The Temple of the Condor served the worship of Apu Kuntur ("Condor God"), one of three sacred Incan animals.

The Inca believed the stone held the sun in its place along its annual path in the sky.
