Coaches and authorized institutional staff members are the only individu-

als who may recruit you. Representatives of athletic interests (boosters) may

not call, write or make in-person contact with you anywhere for the purpose

of recruiting you to a university and participating in athletics.

When can a coach contact me?Off Campus Contact

In the sport of basketball, a coach can arrange a face-to-face meeting

with you, off the University’s campus, beginning the first day of classes of

your senior year.

In all other sports, a coach can arrange a face-to-face meeting with you,

off the University’s campus, beginning July 1 after your junior year.

Telephone CallsIn all sports other than football and basketball, a coach may call a

prospect one time per week after July 1 following the completion of the

prospect’s junior year in high school.

In the sport of football, a coach may initiate one telephone call to a

prospect between April 15th and May 31st of the prospect’s junior year.

Additional calls are not permitted prior to September 1st of the beginning of

the prospect’s senior year in high school.

In the sport of men’s basketball, coaches may make one telephone call

per month from June 15 of the prospect’s sophomore year through July 31 of

the junior year. Beginning August 1 of the senior year a coach may make two

telephone calls per week. Only one call per week may be made to a two-

year or four-year college prospect.

In the sport of women’s basketball, coaches may make one telephone

call per month during the months of April (on or after the Thursday after the

conclusion of the NCAA Division I Final Four) and May of the prospect’s

junior year in high school, one telephone call between June 1 and June 20

and one telephone call between June 21 and June 30 of the prospect’s junior

year in high school. Three telephone calls to a prospect are permitted during

the month of July, with no more than one call per week.

In the following circumstances unlimited calls to a prospect are permitted:

(1) during the five days immediately preceding an official visit to the

University of Miami, (2) on the initial date for signing the National Letter of

Intent and the two days following the signing date, and (3) on the day of a

coach’s off-campus contact with a prospect

Dear Prospective Student-Athlete:

As a prospective student-athlete, you may have the athletic potential to

compete at the Division I level. If so, you probably will be exposed to an enor-

mous amount of recruitment activities from universities across the country.

Throughout the recruitment process, coaches will reference various

NCAA rules and regulations. The rules are designed for various reasons. The

most important of which are to ease the pressures on prospective student-

athletes and to level the playing field so that all universities operate within the

same guidelines.

During the recruiting process you may have the following questions:

- When and how often can I visit an institution’s campus?

- When, where and how often can a coach telephone me?

- How many times can a coach observe me in practice and/or competition?

- What academic criteria must I meet to be eligible to compete at the

Division I level?

The answers to these questions and more can be obtained from the

University of Miami Compliance Office or the NCAA by requesting the NCAA

Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete. The guide may be provided to

a prospective student-athlete at any time. The guide addresses issues relat-

ed to Divisions I, II and III academic eligibility, financial aid, recruitment and

more.

To receive a copy of the guide call the NCAA Hotline at 1-800-638-3731

or request it from the University of Miami coach who is recruiting you.

Please remember that since violations of NCAA rules during your recruit-

ment could jeopardize your athletic eligibility, it is important for you and your

parents to be informed and to ask questions throughout the recruiting

process.

Best of luck and GO HURRICANES!

Sincerely,

David Reed

Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance

Frequently asked questions

Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete (Prospect)? You are a prospect if you have started classes for the ninth grade. Before

the ninth grade, you may become a prospect if a university provides you (or

your family or friends) any financial aid or other benefit that is not usually pro-

vided to prospective student-athletes.

You are no longer a prospect if you have done any of the following:

(1) Officially register and enroll in a minimum full-time program of studies

and have attended classes in any four-year collegiate institution’s regular

academic year (excluding summer); or (2) Participated in a regular squad

practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution that occurs before

the beginning of any term; or (3) Officially register and enrolled and attend

classes during the summer prior to initial enrollment and receive institutional

athletics aid.

How do I know if I’m being recruited?A coach is recruiting you if they try to convince you directly, or through

your family, to attend their school and participate in intercollegiate athletics.

There are several ways to be recruited: (1) a coach may provide you with an

official paid visit to view the campus, (2) a coach may arrange an in-person,

off-campus meeting with you (or your family), or (3) a coach or staff member

may call you (or your family) on more than one occasion for the purpose of

recruitment.

ComplianceFor all sports, coaches may receive telephone calls placed by a prospect at

the prospect’s expense at anytime, including before July 1 following the

prospect’s junior year in high school.

LettersIn sports other than men’s basketball, letters and recruiting information may

be sent to you starting September 1 at the beginning of your junior year in high

school. In men’s basketball, recruiting materials may be provided starting June

15 at the conclusion of the prospect’s sophomore year.

What is a Contact?A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the

prospect’s parent(s) or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or ath-

exchange of a greeting. NOTE: At the Division I level, athletic representatives

(boosters) may not contact you for the purpose of recruiting.

What can a school offer me to attend their University? You (or your family) may not receive any benefit, inducement or arrange-

ments such as cash, clothing, cars, gifts or loans to encourage you to sign a

National Letter of Intent or to attend a NCAA school.

A University may offer you a one-year scholarship that covers room and

board, tuition and fees, and required course-related books, or any part of

these. The institution can recommend that this aid is renewed each year, as is

the general practice at the University of Miami but this renewal is not guaran-

your sport. At the beginning of your junior year you should sign up for the

NCAA Clearinghouse. Your high school guidance office can provide you with

the information to register.

The Retention Programs

The University of Miami offers unique programs designed to assist stu-

dent-athletes in their pursuit of a college education. These are a few of the

programs offered to assist student-athletes:

1. UMX Freshman Experience Course - A unique class designed to assist

freshman student-athletes with the transition from high school to college.

2. Proactive Mentorship Program - This program is designed to assist

student-athletes with the transition skills necessary to be successful college

students. All freshmen are required to participate and meet once a week

with a mentor covering issues such as time management, goal-setting,

class preparation, test preparation, etc.

3. Study Table Program - Provides valuable locations and time to accom-

plish academic goals. Structured times, group and individual tutorials, com-

puter labs, and quiet areas are designated for this program.

4. F.A.S.T. Program (Freshman Academic Success Training) - The main

purpose of this program is to ensure a smooth and successful transition

from high school to college through academic success training. This will be

accomplished through closely monitoring incoming at-risk student-athletes

so as to ensure the use of efficient time management and study skills.

Assumptions are made that all of our student-athletes come to us with

good study habits, academic knowledge, and social judgment. This pro-

gram will address all these areas and be reinforced throughout the semes-

ter.

5. Computer Lab - Located within the Hecht Athletic Center, student-ath-

letes have access to 30 personal computers with Internet access and con-

duct research. The lab also has 20 laptop computers that student-athletes

can check out and take with them on team trips, or when they want to work

on their own.

Association provide individual and group assistance upon request. The

tutor program at the University of Miami is one of a small number of athletic

programs in the country to be awarded CRLA certification.

Cobb StadiumAs head coach Amy Deem continues to build the

University of Miami women’s track program to one of the

nation’s elite, the construction of Cobb Stadium for

Soccer, Track and Field marked a major step in that

process.

Located adjacent to the Hecht Athletic Center and

providing seating for 500 people, the facility is named

after Ambassador and Mrs. Charles E. Cobb. The

Cobb family donated the leadership gift for the recon-

struction and expansion of the University track and

the construction of the new soccer field.

Groundbreaking for the facility took place on April 21,

1998.

“Having a facility like Cobb Stadium is a tremen-

dous boost to our program,” said Deem. “We would

like to thank the Cobb family for their continued sup-

port. It is through their generosity and the unending

efforts of Paul Dee and the UM Administration that

our dream for a state-of-the-art facility has come true.”

Ambassador Cobb was captain of the Stanford University track

team and a member of the 1960 United States Olympic team as a

high hurdler. He has been a member of the University of Miami Board

of Trustees and its Executive Committee for over 20 years and is the

former Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

“I am very pleased that our family is able to recognize Chuck’s

many years of service to the University of Miami in this manner,” Mrs.

Cobb said. “We have long felt that the University, by its natural loca-

tion, is perfectly situated to be a great venue for these two sports. We

hope this facility will be a catalyst for new traditions of excellence,

commensurate with other University of Miami programs, and that it

will also encourage increased participation in soccer, track and field

by youngsters in our community.”

In addition to providing a first class facility for the Hurricane

soccer and track and field programs, the stadium is available to

host soccer and track and field events for school and youth

groups. Miami-Dade County has been invited to hold future

County Junior High School Soccer and Track and Field

Championships at Cobb Stadium.

“The addition of Cobb Stadium is a great step forward for

the Miami Track program,” commented former Hurricane

sprinter Karen Waite. “The new track allows the Hurricanes

to compete at home more often which is very exciting for

the team and fans.”

“Welcome to Miami... bienvenidos a Miami.”With 84 miles of Atlantic coastline, yearlongsunshine and a boasted average daily tempera-ture of 75 degrees, it is no wonder in his hit sin-gle, Will Smith dubbed Miami “the city where theheat is on.”

The Heat on the CourtThanks to South Florida’s year-round,

sports-friendly climate, Miami has a lot to offerin outdoor recreational activities. From some ofthe PGA’s finest golf courses to almost 700parks, there is something for everyone. Withcountless opportunities for kayaking, scuba-div-ing, fishing, beach volleyball and rollerblading, there is no excuse for going without a tan.

South Florida truly has the perfect weatherfor sports and is one of only eight metropolitanareas in the United States that can boast of aprofessional franchise in each of the four majorsports. The Major League’s Florida Marlins hadeverybody “doing the fish” when they won theWorld Series in 1997 and 2003. The NFL’sMiami Dolphins have thrilled fans for decades atDolphin Stadium, which hosted the Super Bowlin 1995, 1999 and 2007. Despite the warmweather, South Florida’s own hockey team, theFlorida Panthers, keep up on the ice. And forbasketball fans, the 2006 NBA Champion MiamiHeat keep things hot at the American AirlinesArena.

Miami is CalienteTruly a melting pot, Miami is home to a vari-

ety of cultures, creating a totally unique, vibrantcultural mosaic. With representatives of everyHispanic nation in the world, Spanish serves asa second language to most of Miami’s resi-dents. Little Havana is the heart of Miami’sCuban community, where churro vendors linethe streets, the aroma of high-octane cafeCubano fills the air and the spirit of friendly com-petition fills Domino Park.

The spirit of the Caribbean is alive in LittleHaiti, where many Haitian artists, musicians andentrepreneurs get their start in Miami. Theproud focal point of this neighborhood is theCaribbean Market, an open-air replica of Port-au-Prince’s Iron Market, where Creole is thedominant language.

Sizzling the silver screenWith tropical weather, a high-quality labor

pool, low production costs and direct links toLatin America, Miami has become one of themost important entertainment centers in theworld. Dubbed as the Latin-American Hollywoodby the New York Times, such blockbusters asBig Trouble—written by Miami Herald columnistDave Barry, Any Given Sunday, There’sSomething About Mary, The Birdcage and WildThings were all filmed in Miami.

A Hollywood favorite off-screen as well,Miami is home to dozens of celebrities and evenmore consider it a favorite weekend getaway.Glorida and Emilio Estefan’s Star Island estateand Gianni Versace’s Ocean Drive mansion-turned-museum are just a couple examples ofMiami’s celebrity appeal. It is not uncommon tospot Sean “Diddy” Combs or Jamie Foxx dancingat a South Beach club or former president BillClinton playing golf at the Biltmore Hotel.

Miami Hot SpotsFor shopping, dancing or just plain people

watching, Miami offers several places to seeand be seen.

With over 800 buildings designed in the‘30s and ‘40s, South Beach serves as thelargest collection of Art Deco architecture in theworld. Celebrity-owned restaurants, likeCameron Diaz’s Bambu, night clubs such asLevel—based on the format of New York’s Studio54, and a medley of huge anchor stores andunique boutiques create the flavor of miami’smost famous hot spot.

Coconut Grove, just a 10-minute drive fromthe University of Miami, is another studentfavorite. Built mainly by West Indian craftsmenbrought in from the Bahamas, it still holds onto

the Caribbean appeal its name suggests.Attracting writers, artists and non-conformists,this hub of the bohemian arts contributed toMiami’s cultural renaissance. Fast-forward acentury and the Grove is still one of Miami’shottest nightspots, with more than 75 cafes, restaurants and clubs that line the streets.

The Warmth of Coral Gables, the“city beautiful”

The University of Miami campus is located inCoral Gables, dubbed the “City Beautiful”.Founded by George Merrick almost a centuryago, the Gables is one of Miami’s most beautifulareas. The palm-lined streets are all namedafter European villages, each one bordered byOld Spanish style homes.

Downtown Coral Gables is bustling with themany offices of multi-national corporations, while the city’s central boulevard—MiracleMile—is home to a wide array of designer bou-tiques and art galleries. One Gables favorite isthe Venetian Pool, a beautiful swimminglagoon carved out of coral, which features cas-cading waterfalls and underwater caves.

ACC “Tradition of Excellence”Tradition

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any

endeavor.

However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competi-

tion has become so balanced and so competitive that it

is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consis-

tency.

Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the

odds. Now in its 56th year of competition, the ACC has

long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and

most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the

nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers

support it.

Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 109

national championships, including 57 in women’s competition and 52 in

men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes

145 times in men’s competition and 92 times in women’s action.

If success is best measured in terms of wins and losses, then the ACC is

unrivaled in NCAA annals. With North Carolina’s victory over Illinois in the

2005 NCAA title game, ACC teams have captured 10 NCAA basketball

championships, including six over the last 18 years.

No conference has posted a better NCAA Tournament record than the

ACC since the NCAA’s inaugural tournament in 1939. With an impressive 85-

43 mark over the past 10 years, ACC teams have posted an NCAA

Tournament-best mark of 329-164 for a sterling .667 winning percentage

against the nation’s toughest competition.

In the 24 years of the current 64-team field, the ACC has produced 22

Final Four teams, an average of almost one per year and five more than any

other conference.

Since the 1985 NCAA Tournament when the field was expanded to 64

teams, ACC teams have been even more impressive compiling a 233-115

(.670) NCAA record, including 63“Sweet 16” appearances and 22 Final Four

berths — all NCAA Tournament bests. Since 1985, 63 of the 120 ACC teams

receiving NCAA berths have won at least two NCAA Tournament games.

Following their title run in 2005, North Carolina’s Tar Heels lead all ACC

schools with four NCAA basketball championships to their credit. Duke has

claimed three national titles, NC State two and Maryland one. The Tar Heels

have captured NCAA titles in 1957, 1982, 1993 and 2005 while the Blue

Devils won their third title in 2001, following back-to-back championships in

1991 and 1992. The Wolfpack walked away with the coveted crown in 1974

and 1983 while the Terps claimed the 2002 national title.

The ACC has 10 or more NCAA Tournament wins in four of the last eight

years and 13 times overall and the league has not posted a losing record in

NCAA Tournament play since 1987. The conference’s 19-year non-losing

streak in NCAA Tournament play is tops among all conferences.

Since 1981, the ACC has produced 37 consensus All-Americans - 17

more than any other conference and has accounted for 25 percent of the

nation’s consensus All-Americans (37-of-146).

Seven of the last 12 and nine of the last 16 consensus National Players

of the Year have come from the ACC. Since 1975, the ACC has had 16 con-

sensus national players of the year — 13 more than any other conference.

Nine of the ACC’s 16 National Players of the Year were unanimous selec-

tions.

A year ago the ACC led all conferences with 53 players on NBA rosters.

In addition, over the past three years 33 ACC players have made their NBA

debuts, including 15 in 2006, eight in 2007 and 10 last year.

This past June the ACC had four players selected in the annual NBA

draft. The ACC has had the most, or tied for the most, first round draft picks

in four of the past seven years and in 10 of the last 16. Since 1986, the ACC

has had 89 first round selections (17 more than any other conference) and

has had at least one first round selection in 20 consecutive NBA drafts.

In 2007, the ACC became the first conference in NCAA history to have 10

teams finish the season with 20 or more wins. In addition, 10 ACC teams

took part in post-season play, including an ACC record seven NCAA

Tournament teams.

For the first time in league history, the ACC surpassed the 2.4 million

mark in attendance in 2006-07. The 12 league schools totaled 2,435,441

over 213 regular season games and six ACC Tournament sessions.

For the third consecutive year, the ACC surpassed the 2.2 million mark in

basketball attendance in 2008, with the 12 league teams totaling 2,355,822

over 203 regular-season games and six tournament session.

The stature of ACC basketball is no where more clearly defined than by

the league’s regional and national television exposure. A record-setting 285

television appearances involving ACC teams, highlight the 2007-08 basket-

ball schedule, including 162 appearances on national television networks.

The ChampionshipsThe conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports dur-

ing the 2008-09 academic year —12 for men and 13 for women.

The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954.

The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or

tennis during the first year.

The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball,

swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and

lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981.

Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, vol-

leyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track,

tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

A HistoryThe Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the

Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members -

Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South

Carolina and Wake Forest — drawing up the conference by-laws.

The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came

early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s

annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in

Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became

officially the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in

the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names

suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard,

Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline.

Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference

be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously.

The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to

pay for conference expenses.

On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and

officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member.

The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30,

1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation.

The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when Georgia

Tech was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern

Conference in January of 1964.

The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of

Florida State , and then expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the

addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Tech. On October 17, 2003,

Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member

starting with the 2005-06 academic year.
