PRONUNCIATIONS

THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE: The Wildcats won their fifth consecutive season opener, defeating Colby-Sawyer College, 72-41. New Hampshire was led by sophomore guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.), who led the team in points (11), assists (three) and steals (three) in 21 minutes played. Senior forward Corinne Coia (North Smithfield, R.I.), who missed all of 2014-15 due to a knee injury, went 3-for-4 from the floor and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line to post 10 points in 18 minutes played. Red shirt freshman Emily Peters (Lindstrom, Minn.) made her collegiate debut as the starting guard after sitting out last year with a knee injury. Peters connected on 3 of 6 triples for nine points while chipping in three rebounds and two assists. Rookie guard/forward Alli Gribbin (Keller, Texas) pulled down a game-high six rebounds while pitching in five points.

Alongside Gribbin and Peters, freshmen Sam Sabino (Rumson, N.J.), Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) and Raven Brathwaite (Boston, Mass.) all made their collegiate debut in the win.

As a team, the Wildcats shot 51.7 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc against the Chargers. The reserves played a key role in the win, adding 29 points off the bench. UNH controlled the paint, outscoring the visitors by a 36-18 margin. SCOUTING DARTMOUTH: The Big Green opened their season on the road with a 63-53 setback to Drexel University in the opening round of the preseason WNIT Tournament on Friday, Nov. 13.

Senior forward Lakin Roland led her team with 15 points going 5-for-15 from the floor and drilling 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. The Dragons outscored the Big Green for the majority of the game, except for the fourth when Dartmouth put up 22 points compared to Drexel’s 14. As a team, Dartmouth shot .333 from the field. However, the Dragons drained 10 of 18 treys attempts to unleash a .556 percentage from beyond the arc.

Last season, the Big Green finished with a 14-14 overall record and 5-9 in Ivy League play, which was their best record in six years. Dartmouth started the 2014-15 season strong with five wins in its first six games. The Big Green roster is comprised of 13 players with nine returners and four newcomers. Junior Fanni Szabo, an All-Ivy Second Team honoree, was the teams’ leading scorer for the second consecutive year. Szabo averaged 16.3 points per game.

Head coach Belle Koclanes is entering her third season roaming the sidelines for Dartmouth.

GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE: Dating back to the 1978-79 season, New Hampshire and Dartmouth have met a combined 38 times, with Wildcats holding a 22-16 margin. However, taking a look at the records, UNH has won 15 of the 19 games in Durham while Dartmouth has prevailed in 12 of the 19 games played in Hanover. The 'Cats are riding a five-game winning streak over the Big Green since the 2010-11 season.

MAGARITY VS. DARTMOUTH: Prior to the arrival of head coach Maureen Magarity, Dartmouth tallied an all-time series-high five game-winning streak against the 'Cats. Since the 2010-11 season, the Wildcats have yet to be defeated by the Big Green. Additionally, UNH limited Dartmouth to a series-low 37 points at Leede Arena on Dec. 7, 2013 (54-37).

OFF TO A GOOD START: UNH has won its last five season openers. The Wildcats have been able to start the season in the win column both on the road and at home the past five seasons seasons, posting three wins in Lundholm Gymnasium and two away from Durham.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS: The 'Cats compiled an 8-4 record in non-conference play in 2014-15. The eight wins outside of league play matched the most victories under the direction of head coach Maureen Magarity, last accomplishing the feat in the 2011-12 season. UNH posted its first win of the non-conference slate against Colby-Sawyer on Nov. 13 in a 72-41 rout.

6-OH-E: Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger earned the nod as a member of the America East Preseason First Team this season. Belanger started in 28 games and led the Wildcats in points (15.8) and rebounds (6.5) per game last year. She registered double figures in the scoring column a team-high 24 times to tally the third highest scoring average in the league. An America East All-Conference First Team honoree, the guard reached double figures in the scoring column in 15 of 16 America East games and eclipsed 20 points or more in four league contests. Belanger poured in 20 points or more six times throughout the 2014-15 season. The senior notched six points and four points in her season debut against Colby-Sawyer on Nov. 13.

COIA IS BACK: Coia returns to the squad after being sidelined by an injury for the 2014-15 season. In her first full season playing for UNH in 2013-14, the America East All-Second Team honoree played in 30 games with 25 starts. She averaged 11.8 points per game and ranked first on the squad in field goal percentage (.475). The 6-foot-4 forward eclipsed at least 10 points in a team-high 21 of 30 games and paced the Wildcats with six double-doubles. Coia was also a key contributor in America East frays, averaging 11.7 points, 5.9 rebounds per game and shot 50 percent from the field. She posted 10 points and four boards in 18 minutes played against Colby-Sawyer on Nov. 13.

CP32: A member of the America East All-Rookie Team in 2014-15, Pogue was a force to be reckon with in conference play last year. The 6-foot-2 center averaged 11.0 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game against America East opponents. A five-time America East Rookie of the Week recipient, she was the first UNH freshman to receive five conference Rookie of the Week honors in a season since Denise Beliveau accomplished the feat during the 2007-08 season. In her rookie season, Pogue played in all 29 games while starting in eight. In 15 minutes against Colby-Sawyer (Nov. 13), the sophomore poured in all three shots for the floor and added a free throw for seven points.

GRANITE STATE OF MIND: Two student-athletes on the 2015-16 roster hail from New Hampshire. They are junior Kat Fogarty (Peterborough) and Aliza Simpson (Londonderry).

CONTROLLING THE PAINT: New Hampshire was 16-3 last season when outscoring its opponent in the paint. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Wildcats are 27-6 when they win the scoring battle in the paint.

MILESTONE WATCH: Belanger is on pace to break the 1,000-point threshold this season. Entering the senior campaign, the co-captain currently ranks 19th in program history with 946 points. Below are the UNH all-time scoring records 16 through 20.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME?NEW HAMPSHIRE 60, DARTMOUTH 44

DECEMBER 18, 2014LUNDHOLM GYMNASIUM | DURHAM, N.H.

DURHAM, N.H. -- Three players reached double figures in scoring as the University of New Hamp-shire women’s basketball team notched a 60-44 victory over intrastate rival Dartmouth College on Thursday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.

UNH improves to 6-3 in the non-conference win while Dartmouth falls to 5-5. The Wildcats have won five consecutive decisions against their in-state rivals, matching the all-time series win streak.

Junior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) led the way for the Wildcats with a game-high 16 points while dishing out three assists. Senior forward Kaylee Kilpatrick (Saint John, New Brunswick) was one rebound shy of a double-double, recording 14 points and nine boards. Freshman guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) set new career-highs in points (13) and 3-pointers made (three). Senior guard Ariel Gaston (Toledo, Ohio) turned in eight points, six rebounds, three helpers and two steals.

Sophomore guard Katie Vareika led Dartmouth with 12 points off the bench. Classmate Fanni Szabo pitched in eight points while rookie Andi Norman notched seven points.

New Hampshire shot .460 (23 of 50) from the floor while Dartmouth was held to a .375 (18 of 48) clip. UNH won the battle in the paint, outscoring (36-14) and outrebounding (37-27) the visitors.

The Wildcats were first to get on the scoreboard as Kilpatrick tallied a layup at 18:46. Dartmouth came right back on the next possession as freshman guard Amber Mixon drilled a 3-pointer. The two sides traded points as the score rose to 8-7 in favor of UNH five minutes into play.

New Hampshire continued to register baskets, but Dartmouth matched the scoring as the home team owned a one-point advantage at 17-16 midway through the first frame.

The Wildcats increased their advantage to 21-16 as layups from Gaston and Kilpatrick fell at 8:27 and 5:07 respectively. Kilpatrick bolstered the lead with a pair of free throws, giving Dartmouth a seven-point deficit with 3:57 left in the first half.

The Big Green narrowed down UNH’s lead with contributions from Vareika, Szabo and freshman center Oliva Smith. However, Belanger punctuated the first half with a floater while fouled to give New Hampshire a 29-26 lead into the break.

After shooting .458 from the field in the first half, Dartmouth was held to just a .292 clip in the second frame. Dartmouth aimed to overtake the lead to begin the second half as it slimmed down UNH’s lead to just one point at 31-30. Despite that, the Wildcats clamped down on the Big Green rally and never conceded the lead for the remainder of the match. A Simpson triple sparked a 10-point run for New Hampshire, upping the advantage to 41-30 less than six minutes into the half.

Dartmouth cut down the double-digit lead to single digits on an Emily Slagle jumper, but UNH responded with a 5-0 flurry powered by Belanger as New Hampshire led 46-36 with 9:06 left in regulation.

The Big Green chipped away at the UNH lead again, tallying baskets from Szabo and junior forward Lakin Roland. However, the Wildcats answered the visitors’ run again. New Hampshire engineered a 9-0 rush to build its largest lead of the night at 55-39 with 5:53 left in the second stanza.

UNH would not relinquish its double-digit lead for the remainder of regulation as it prevailed over Dartmouth for the fifth consecutive time in the Granite State rivalry.

New Hampshire visits Northeastern University for non-conference action Monday, Dec. 22 (2 p.m.). UNH’s next home game is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 31 (3 p.m.) against Bryant University. For tickets visit UNHWildcats.com/tickets or call (603) 862-4000.

16 season.

LEADER OF THE 'CAT PACK: The 2015-16 season marks the sixth season for head coach Maureen Magarity, who became the sixth head coach in program history in May 2010 and the youngest coach of a Division I team – men's or women's – in the country. Magarity quickly made a positive impact on the program with a 73-76 record in her five seasons; in comparison, UNH was a combined 33-87 the four years prior to her arrival. In 2014-15, New Hampshire finished the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 17-12 and 9-7 against America East opponents. The Wildcats finished the season fourth in the league standings and reached double digit wins for the fourth consecutive year. Magarity led the Wildcats to a 19-12 record and 12-4 in America East play, the most wins in a single season since the 1998-99 season. Additionally, Magarity directed New Hampshire to its second consecutive appearance in the America East semifinals, topping Vermont 85-79 (March 7). In just her second year at the helm in Durham, Magarity guided the Wildcats to their second postseason appearance (beyond conference postseason play) in the program's 37-year history when UNH advanced to the 2012 Women's Basketball Invitational. New Hampshire finished the year with a 16-14 overall record to mark the team's first winning season since 2006 and most wins since 2002. In her first season, Magarity led the Wildcats to a 9-20 overall record and they doubled their conference wins from the previous season.

500 AND COUNTING: Now in its 41th year as a varsity program, the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team has an overall record of 547-522 for a .511 winning percentage. UNH recorded the 500th victory in program history Feb. 22, 2012 with a 65-53 win against Maine on Senior Day at Lundholm Gymnasium. Here is a look at the century milestones:

Maureen Magarity (Marist ’03) completed her fifth year as head coach of the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team during the 2014-15 season. Magarity became the sixth head coach in program history in May 2010 and the youngest coach of a Division I team – men’s or women’s – in the country.

Magarity has quickly made a positive impact on the program with three winning seasons in her first five years as head coach.

UNH finished the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 17-12 and 9-7 against America East opponents. The Wildcats finished the season fourth in the league standings and reached double digit wins for the fourth consecutive year. The Wildcats garnered four America East All-Conference accolades for the second straight year, the most the program has received since the 2001-02 season. Led by First Team honoree Elizabeth Belanger, the junior guard was joined by All-Academic and All-Defensive Team mention Kaylee Kilpatrick, Third Team honoree Ariel Gaston and All-Rookie Team member Carlie Pogue.

In 2013-14, Magarity led UNH to a 19-12 record and 12-4 in America East play, its most wins in a season since the 1998-99 campaign. During the 2013-14 season, Magarity guided the Wildcats to six consecutive wins and an 8-1 start to conference play, the best nine game conference stretch in program history. The Wildcats reached the America East Championship semifinal for the second consecutive year, which UNH has not accomplished since the 1988 and 1989 conference tournaments. New Hampshire again led the America East Conference in free throw percentage for the fourth consecutive season, powered by the program’s most efficient free throw shooter, Kelsey Hogan. The Wildcats had four student-athletes receive all-conference accolades. The award winning quartet consisted of First Team selection Hogan followed by Second Team mention Corinne Coia, Third Team honoree Elizabeth Belanger and All-Academic recipient Kaylee Kilpatrick.

Despite missing 14 games due to maternity leave during the 2012-13 sea-son, Magarity guided the Wildcats to its first America East Championship semifinal appearance since 2005. Under the direction of Magarity, Hogan made the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to defeat Stony Brook University, 49-46, in the conference quarterfinals. The Wildcats had three representatives on the all-conference team, led by Second Team selections Cari Reed and Morgan Frame. Belanger garnered All-Rookie honors, the 12th Wildcat in program history to accomplish the feat.

In just her second year at the helm in Durham, Magarity guided the Wildcats to their second postseason appearance (beyond conference postseason play) in the program’s 37-year history when UNH advanced to the 2012 Women’s Basketball Invitational. New Hampshire finished the year with a 16-14 overall record to mark the team’s first winning season since 2006 and most wins since 2002. In comparison, UNH was a combined 33-87 the four years prior to her arrival.

Other season highlights included a 19-point victory against Hartford that ended an 18-game losing streak to the defending league champion, as well as a series sweep of border rivals Vermont and Maine as well as Stony Brook. UNH led the America East conference in both free throw percentage and 3-point field goal percentage.

Under Magarity’s tutelage, Denise Beliveau was named to the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Second Team as well as the America East First Team and All-Defensive Team while transfer Morgan Frame garnered All-Conference Second Team recognition multiple ‘Cats had not been honored since 2003.

In her first season, Magarity led the Wildcats to a trip to the quarterfinals of the 2011 America East Tournament. Under Magarity’s direction, the Wildcats doubled their conference wins from the year before and also picked up a thrilling 88-74 win over A-10 rival Rhode Island, the first triple-overtime victory in program history.

Magarity came to UNH after a four-year stint at the United States Military Academy, where she served as the associate head coach from 2009-10. In Magarity’s four years at West Point, the Black Knights compiled an overall record of 72-48, including a program-best 24-win campaign during the 2006-07 season. In her first three years on the job, Army averaged 20 wins a season, the best three-year span in program history.

Magarity started at West Point in 2006-07 as an assistant coach and was elevated to the title of associate head coach in August 2009. Tagged as the

team’s recruiting coordinator, Magarity assisted in all aspects of the program, including the organization of official, unoffi-cial, home and school visits with prospects. She also assisted with the coordination of practice, budget management, scouting opponents and monitoring academics.

Her main focus, however, was player development for both the wing and post players. In her time on the bench, she coached two players to All-Patriot League honors and helped one student-athlete earn the program’s first Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in 2010.

In addition to her tenure at Army, Magarity’s collegiate coaching experience includes stints as an assistant coach at Fairfield University (2005-06) and Marist College (2004-05).

Prior to a one-year stint at Fairfield University, Magarity served as an assis-tant coach at Marist and helped lead the Red Foxes to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title en route to a program-best 22-7 record.

Magarity earned a B.A. in Communications and Public Relations with a minor in Psychology from Marist College in 2003. In addition, she earned an M.P.A. in Public Administration while at Marist in 2005.

As a player, Magarity served as team captain her junior and senior seasons and led the Red Foxes to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. She garnered two All-MAAC Second Team selections, and was a 2004 MAAC All-Tournament Team choice. Magarity earned two MAAC Scholar-Athlete awards (2002, 2004) and received the James Pizzani Award for dedication and loyalty as a senior.

Before transferring to Marist, she played one season at Boston College. While at BC, the Eagles reached the semifinals of the preseason WNIT and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2000.

Magarity is a member of the WBCA and is a recent 2012 graduate of the WBCA Center for Coaching Excellence seminar.

Magarity, her husband Brendan and her two-year old daughter Charlotte, reside in Nottingham, N.H.
