Considered one of the fi nest competition pools and diving wells in the nation, the 1,750-seat Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion’s new technology provides a venue for some of the fastest times and best diving in the country.

The facility, in the heart of campus and adjacent to three other world-class facilities – Ohio Stadium, Thomp-son Library and the Recreation and Physical Activity Center – has earned a reputation for fast water in its fi ve years. In fact, that’s what the Columbus Dispatch wrote about the facility in an in-depth article titled “Built for Speed.”

The article stated that “it’s not one thing that makes this pool fast, but a collection of things – the depth, number and width of lanes, deep gutters, and water inlets at the bottom of the pool – that reduce waves.”

And the July 2007 issue of Aquatics International magazine stated this about McCorkle:

“…a state-of-the-art competition pool loaded with the latest technology sets a university apart from the competition.”

Completed in the summer of 2005 and edicated Octo-ber 14, 2005, the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion is the newest addition to Ohio State’s top-notch athletics facilities. The Pavilion consists of the Mike Peppe Natatorium and the Ron O’Brien Diving Well. Holding nearly 1.56 million gallons of water in the entire facility, the Pavilion is part of Ohio State’s new Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC).

The McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion has already hosted numerous championship competitions. Here is a look at the championship slate to date:

BILL DORENKOTTHEAD COACH6TH SEASONCLEVELAND STATE ‘91

Ohio State women’s swimming is a program on the rise, under the steady and patient leadership of sixth-year coach Bill Dorenkott. Since his arrival in 2008, the Buckeyes are well on their way to achieving his vision as a consistent contender vying for Big Ten Conference titles, racing for NCAA crowns, and sending its athletes to the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Due to the progression the program has achieved with Dorenkott at the helm, he was offered a fi ve-year contact extension during the summer of 2013. The ac-cepted agreement will run through 2018.

“We are excited to extend Coach Dorenkott’s contract,” TJ Shelton, assistant athletics director for sports administration at Ohio State, said. “He is committed to getting the best out of our student-athletes in the classroom and in the pool. Bill is well deserving of this extension and we look forward to having him lead our program for several years to come.”

In Dorenkott’s fi rst season as Ohio State’s head coach (2009), he took a team that had not fi nished in the Top 5 at the Big Ten championships in more than a decade and managed an eighth-place fi nish. The squad’s per-formance provided a foundation for the future of Ohio State women’s swimming, representing an important step in the evolution of the program.

In 2010, the Buckeyes held off two other programs to fi nish in fi fth-place at the Big Ten championships. The Top 5 effort represents the highest fi nish for the team in 13 years (since the 1997 team fi nished fi fth). The 399 points was the most scored by Ohio State in 16 years. In 2011 and 2012, the progression of the program only continued as the Scarlet and Gray concluded each season in the Top 3 of the conference standings.

Most recently, Ohio State maintained its four-year run of Top 5 Big Ten fi nishes with a fourth-place effort in 2013. At the meet, Shannon Draves, a member of Dorenkott’s fi rst recruiting class, defended her Big Ten title in the 200 butterfl y with a school-record time of 1:55.12.

A proven winner who inspires that excellence in his swimmers, Dorenkott placed three Big Ten champion-ships - 2002, 2005 and 2006 - on his resume during a 10-year stint as Penn State’s women’s coach; the Nittany Lions never fi nished lower than fourth at the women’s Big Ten championships during the Dorenkott decade (prior to his arrival, they had never fi nished higher than fourth). His Nittany Lion teams also fi nished in the Top 20 at the NCAA championships in three of his last fi ve years in State College.

Dorenkott has coached 27 different student-athletes to 33 Big Ten individual championships, including 18 women to 30 Big Ten titles. During his fi nal season of

three coaching the Penn State men, he guided Pat Schirk to an NCAA championship in the men’s 200 backstroke. A total of 57 of his PSU swimmers qualifi ed for the U.S. Olympic Trials, and his student-athletes set 10 Big Ten records and four Big Ten championship records.

Just as in the pool, Dorenkott’s athletes experience success in the classroom. Two of his Penn State swimmers earned the prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship. He has had a total of 230 academic All-Big Ten honorees and 46 College Swimming Coaches Association Scholar (CSCAA) All-Americans. His teams have been honored with a CSCAA Team Academic award 13 times, most recently in 2013.

Dorenkott recruits student-athletes who have vision and goals beyond just being a swimmer. In fact, he recruits on the philosophy that swimming is going to be the fourth-most important priority for his student athletes. He believes if his athletes take care of the fi rst three priorities: 1) Be a great person; 2) Remember who you are, where you came from and understand that family is important; and 3) You are at Ohio State to get an education, and your degree will open doors for you a long time after you leave Ohio State.

Dorenkott has coached on four continents, and his stu-dent-athletes have competed in the Olympic Games, PanAm Games, World University Games, World Cham-pionships, Pan-Pacifi c Championships, U.S. National Championships and on the U.S. International circuit. He has been a member of the United States Swimming National Team coaching staff since 2001. He served on the U.S. National Team coaching staff during the 2001 World University Games, the 2003 PanAm Games and the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix.

An outstanding competitor as a student-athlete at Cleveland State, Dorenkott became a 15-time confer-ence champion, setting a school record in the process. He was a varsity record holder and a U.S. National qualifi er and scorer. In 1990, he earned the team MVP award and then served as a team captain in 1991. Do-renkott received two degrees while attending Cleveland State, earning bachelor’s degrees in both communica-tions and psychology.

He was named a graduate assistant coach of the men’s and women’s swim team at Ashland University in 1991 immediately following graduation and was named head coach of both teams after just two seasons. In his fi rst season at Ashland, he led the women’s team to a conference championship, and led the men to a fourth place showing. He turned the men’s team around the next season as they joined the women’s team as con-ference champions as the women repeated. In his two seasons as the Eagles’ mentor, the program produced 16 All-Americans in 49 events. Five Ashland swimmers were named Academic All-Americans in 1995, and 33 records were set under Dorenkott’s tutelage. His 1995 men’s team fi nished sixth at NCAAs after a 9-2 dual meet season, and the women placed 11th. While at Ashland, Dorenkott was the 1993-94 and 1994-95 Penn-Ohio Conference Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year and the 1994-95 Penn-Ohio Conference Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year. He served as the meet director of the 1994-95 Men’s and Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. He also served as the head coach of Ashland’s women’s tennis team from 1991-93.

A native of Westlake, Ohio, Dorenkott and his wife Adrianne (who like Bill, swam at Cleveland State) have four children - Jack, Matt, Ann and Will.

JUSTIN SOCHORHEAD DIVING COACH

FIRST SEASON

Justin Sochor was named head coach of the Ohio State diving team, TJ Shelton, as-sociate athletics director for sports administration, announced Wednesday. Sochor, a native of Worthington, Ohio, becomes just the fourth coach in the program’s 82-year history.

“I am confi dent that Justin has what it takes to lead our very successful diving pro-gram both in the classroom and in the diving well,” Shelton said. “During the interview process, Justin articulated a vision that would focus on the overall development of the student-athlete. We are excited to have Justin join our coaching staff at Ohio State.”

Sochor, who was head coach for Team USA at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, is no stranger to the remarkable Buckeye diving program.

The 2010 USA Diving Junior National Coach of the Year, Sochor transitioned from a three-year stint at the helm of the U.S. Elite Diving Academy to the program manager and head coach of the Ohio State Diving Club in 2010. Sochor, who was a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes from 2007-10, worked closely with former 35-year Ohio State diving head coach Vince Panzano and considers his predecessor as his coaching mentor.

“Mike Peppe, Ron O’Brien and Vince Panzano. For more than 80 years, these three men have created the fi nest diving community for student-athletes to achieve their highest level of success personally, competitively and academically,” Sochor said. “These coaches have inspired me to continue the tradition of excellence at this great university. I am truly honored and humbled to step forward as the fourth head diving coach of the Buckeyes.”

Most recently, Sochor led the Ohio State Diving Club to back-to-back overall national titles at the 2013 USA Diving Junior National Championships Aug. 10 in Minneapolis, Minn. The OSU boys club also claimed a national championship.

In 2012, Sochor left his position with the club team to take full leadership as interim diving coach for the Scarlet and Gray during the Women’s Big Ten Championships. With his guidance, the Buckeyes swept the diving events as former OSU diver Bianca Alvarez dominated the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events with scores of 360.65 and 410.65, respectively, while current OSU diver Cheyenne Cousineau completed the sweep with a winning score of 326.10 on the 10-meter platform. In 2010, he also guided the Ohio State men’s squad to its fi rst Big Ten championship in 54 years.

Sochor has coached the Buckeyes to multiple NCAA All-American performances, in-cluding fi rst and second place fi nishes at the 2008 NCAA National Championships on the women’s 3-meter event when Chelsea Davis and Alvarez earned the Top 2 spots, respectively.

As a coach at the junior and national team levels, Sochor has collected 78 individual national medals, including 22 golds, 25 silvers and 21 bronzes. Below are some recent successes guided by Sochor:

to all who meet him. He has been named head coach for many different national team competitions and is known for leading his divers to national and interna-tional success.

A former varsity diver and Cleveland State University graduate with a degree in psy-chology, Sochor founded American Flyers Diving, Inc. in 1996. He developed his club into one of the largest diving clubs in the Midwest, bringing nearly 100 new divers

into the sport each year. As a Viking, Sochor was a four-time collegiate conference champion and was named the 1995 Athlete of the Year. From 1992-1997, Sochor was a professional high diver/entertainer at Sea World.

LIZ HINKLEMANASSISTANT COACHSECOND SEASONTOLEDO ‘08

Liz Hinkleman was one of the youngest head coaches in Division I swimming at the University of Toledo, leading the Rockets to the 2012 MAC Championship before being named MAC Coach of the Year. A proven leader at her alma mater, Hinkleman is now a Buckeye. Ohio State women’s swimming head coach Bill Dorenkott an-nounced Hinkleman’s hiring in the summer of 2012.

“Simply put, Liz Hinkleman is a winner,” Dorenkott said. “Liz has enjoyed success as a student-athlete, assistant coach and, most recently, as a Division I collegiate head coach.”

“Liz is respected by her peers and widely considered one of the rising stars in our profession. The Ohio State University is fortunate to be able to call her a Buckeye.”

A UT swimmer from 2004-08, Hinkleman was a three-time MAC champion in the 200-yard freestyle relay, setting school and conference records. Hinkleman also served as team captain of the Rockets twice, earning the “Captain’s Award” in 2007. She returned to Toledo in 2009 as an assistant coach for two seasons and helped the Rockets to their fi rst MAC swimming title in program history in 2010 before claiming the program’s second title as head coach this past season.

“It’s an honor to work with such an accomplished athletic department and I am excited about joining the Buckeye family,” Hinkleman said. “I look forward to working with Bill and the team to help them continue to improve and compete for a Big Ten championship, NCAA and international honors.”

In the water in 2012, Hinkleman coached two student-athletes to the NCAA Cham-pionships, including Laura Lindsay, a two-time All-American and fi rst team All-MAC selection who was Toledo’s nominee this year for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Overall, fi ve UT swimmers earned fi rst team All-MAC accolades, while two others were named second team All-MAC.

“What most impressed me about Liz is her commitment to excellence. Her student-athlete’s have embraced excellence in their academic, athletic and social endeav-ors.”

But she didn’t just produced champions in the water. In two seasons, Hinkleman pro-duced 11 Academic All-MAC honorees, while 13 earned Academic All-MAC Honor-able Mention laurels. During her fi rst season at the helm of the program, the Rockets produced their highest term grade-point average in program history, recording a 3.455 GPA during the fall semester. The program’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the four-year period from 2006-07 through 2009-10 represented the highest mark since NCAA began tracking classroom progress in 2004.

Prior to being named head coach at Toledo, Hinkleman was the assistant swim

coach at Lewis University in Chicago in 2008 and served as the coach for a club team at Lewis, the Academy Bullets, before returning to Toledo in January 2009.

Hinkleman is a native of Munster, Ind., and graduated from the University of with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy administration.

“We are at a critical point in our program’s evolution,” Dorenkott said. “We are fortu-nate to have Liz Hinkleman on board to empower our young women as they pursue their dreams.”
