AN AWAKENING – BRINGING TO LIFE AGAIN – EXTRAORDINARY SEASON
A description of Spring? Yes! But more importantly, a description of revival!
The definition of revival according to Richard Owen Roberts: an extraordinary movement of the Holy Spirit producing extraordinary results.
I was stunned when I read the information below on religious revival. Why? Is my vision of God too small or my faith too little in the Creator of the universe? God, please forgive me! Before reading these stories, prepare your heart first by reading and meditating on Isaiah 6:1-8. (Repentance and forgiveness must always precede our extraordinary journey with God.) FIRST STORY: “In the mid 1800s, people began to be converted at the rate of 10,000 a week in New York City. The movement spread throughout New England. Church bells would bring people to prayer at eight in the morning, twelve noon and six in the evening. Baptists had so many people to baptize, they couldn’t get them into their churches. They went down to the river, cut a big square in the ice and baptized them in cold water. In one year (1857), more than one million people were converted. The revival crossed the Atlantic and broke out in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, South Africa, South India - anywhere there was an evangelical cause there was revival and its effect was felt for 40 years.” (J. Edwin Orr – Baptist minister and historian)
SECOND STORY: It all began with a woman, Mrs. Colville, a Baptist missionary from England who was unafraid to speak spiritual truth over tea. James McQuilkin, in attendance at the tea party, was uncomfortable as she spoke openly about the condition of the soul. After another guest described her Christian experience, Mrs. Colville stated, “My dear, I don’t believe you have ever known the Lord Jesus.” James McQuilkin quickly left the tea party knowing that what she spoke was true of him. After experiencing no peace for two weeks, James McQuilkin found peace by trusting the Lord Jesus. The following year, McQuilkin
felt burdened to pray for his neighbors. He asked three friends to join him. Once a week, the four men gathered at the village schoolhouse to pray for each person in their community by name (Ahogill, Ulster Province, Ireland – September 1857). At the same time, God was laying the same burden on many hearts and similar prayer groups started throughout northern Ireland. Pastors began preaching about revival, but widespread revival did not come. God’s people still prayed for 19 more months. On the night of March 14, 1859, the McQuilkin group invited Christians to a prayer meeting at the Ahogill Presbyterian Church. The church was so crowded the meeting was moved out into the street. Hundreds of people knelt in the mud and rain confessing their sins and praising God. They were the first of 100,000 people God called to Himself in 1859 in what became known as the Ulster Revival. (I love this next part of the story.) There was a great spiritual movement among young people. It was not uncommon to find children and adults listening to the preaching of 12-year-old boys in the streets. The results of the revival in County Antrim (location of Ahogill) left jails empty and no crimes to investigate. A visitor to Ulster reported “thronged church services, abundant prayer meetings, increased family prayers, unmatched scripture reading, increased giving, converts remaining steadfast.” (The One Year Christian History, E. Michael & Sharon Rusten, pp. 148-149.)
LADIES, are you pleased with the spiritual state of America, West Virginia, your neighborhood?
DEAR GOD, bring revival back to America in 2020! What is God calling you and me to do for His Glory? Isaiah 6:8: “. . . Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.”

The American Baptist Women of West Virginia are pleased and excited to announce that the construction of a totally handicap accessible restroom facility in Parchment Valley’s main building has been selected as our Special Project for 2020.
What once was the office hub of activity in the administration building has now been gutted and
construction is underway for a new restroom facility. The office moved to the other end of the dining hall. Construction should be completed soon.

2020 AWARDS In times of normalcy, we would be excited to list the names of scholarship recipients voted on at the ABWM March Executive Board Meeting. However, this year our meeting was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the importance of early notification for
the girls’ financial planning for the upcoming year, both the scholarship/loan committee and the executive board met through electronic communications and the scholarships were awarded. Please see listing on page eight.

One More ABWM WV Hope Story Jan Waine, Hampton Baptist Church (Kanawha Valley), treasurer of ABW at her church, shared this Herald of Hope story. Her mother, Virginia Hall, was a former Kanawha Valley Association Mission and Service Ministries’ Coordinator in the early 2000s. She was also a former ABW President at their former church, Judson Baptist Church (Kanawha Valley). Jan traveled to her mother’s home for a visit and took along
her August 2019 edition of Seasons to share with her mom as a photo of Jan was shown as a women’s conference attendee. Things got busy and everyone headed off on vacation. Sometime later, Jan inquired as to whether or not her mother had looked at Seasons, only to learn she had not, but then decided to make that a priority and perused the magazine. Instead of acknowledging Jan’s photo, her mother came running through the house holding Seasons open to the WV Hope page and exclaimed, “I have this photo!” Her mother related that the night before her Dad (C. B. Hall) was deployed in the Army, they stopped by Jan’s great-grandmother’s house to say goodbye. Visitors in her house at that time were her friends, Rev. W. F. and Mrs. Newton, who ministered in the Herald of Hope Chapel Car in the Quincy area. When Mrs. Newton found out about Jan’s dad’s deployment, she dropped to her knees and they all prayed for him.
After searching through tubs of photos, however, Jan and her mother were unable to locate the photo. Among those folks pictured in front of the Herald of Hope Chapel Car are Jan’s grandmother, Anna Johnson, and her great-grandmother, Junia Childers.

Why do we love Camp Alpha for MOP 2020?
Camp Alpha is a children’s church camp located in Ryazan, Russia. For 20 years, the West Virginia Baptist Convention has had a partnership with the Ryazan Baptist Union. As West Virginia Baptists, we all know of children, family members and friends who have had their lives changed because of Camp Cowen. You can see why the Russian Baptist Union decided to build their camp in resemblance to Camp Cowen and Parchment Valley. Now, the Russian Baptist Union is using Camp Alpha to teach children about Jesus and how to be a disciple of Christ. American Baptist Women of WV is joining Camp Alpha in hopes of assisting in the financing of some of their projects. Camp Alpha wants to finish fencing the complex in order to provide more safety and security. They dream of a building that could hold a kitchen and additional cabins for the students. Currently, they cook over a camp fire or bring the meals from their local churches. Although they have two cabins repurposed from storage containers, they use tents to house the other students. Camp Alpha does not have running water so they could use a water pump that could supply water throughout the camp. We hope and pray our donations will allow them to continue God’s work to draw kids into a closer relationship with Jesus.

2020 $6,000 Goal
Love Gift 2020 Goal: $100,000
Love Gift is an over and above offering that supports American Baptist Churches mission and ministry. Begun during the Great Depression, the denomination faced a deficit and the women challenged one another to raise enough funds to cover that deficit. They rose to meet that challenge and then some! Today, Love Gift is an extra gift to the United Mission Support of the American Baptist family. Through Love Gift, missions and ministries in the United States, Puerto Rico and around the world are enabled to reach out to millions of God's people.
Are you curious about how much West Virginia has donated towards Love Gift? American Baptist Churches Information Systems (ABCIS) has produced a Love Gift Giving chart by region. Our banner year was 2001 with $206,070! In 2019, WV Love Gift contributions totaled $91,463 – down $2,416 from 2018. Only 104 churches supported Love Gift. Fifty-four percent (54.4%) comes back to the WVBC, who is facing deficits. Let’s strive to meet and exceed this goal! WVABW Ministries goal for 2020 is $100,000. There is a Love Gift distribution spreadsheet on our webpage that explains the importance of this ministry and lists the ministries to which it is distributed. Check it out at www.wvbc.org. Type in American Baptist Women by the upper right hand corner and there we are!
Special thanks to Joan Hall, former WVBC Mission Support Administrative Assistant, for her commitment to Love Gift and congratulations on her March 1st retirement! Tracie Emerick is our contact for future requests of Love Gift boxes. You can email your request at [email protected].

West Virginia State Sales Tax Conference and Spiritual Growth Retreat
Official word has now been handed down from the state office that, yes, we do have to charge sales tax for our events. There are two ways you can handle this:
1. You can bite the bullet and just pay the tax that will be included on your registration form for calculation based on your event cost or
2. You can bypass paying the tax by doing the following:
Have your church send a tax exempt form to the state office in Parkersburg.
Write your check for the event amount to your church and give it to your church treasurer.
Ask your church treasurer to issue a check for the event amount made payable to ABWM of WV.
Fill out your registration form (do not calculate sales tax if check is being issued by your church) and attach the check your church has written or put a note on the form that the check is coming from your church (name) and send it directly to the state ABWM registrar, Carrie Gasaway (451 22nd Street, Dunbar, WV 25064) – not to the state office.
Nothing goes to the state office except your church’s tax exempt form.
For example, the Spiritual Growth Retreat package, which includes two nights lodging, Saturday meals and Sunday breakfast is $112.00 (2019 fee schedule from Parchment Valley). A 6% sales tax based on $112.00 equals $6.72. If you’re planning on a Saturday attendance ($25.00 registration fee and $7.00 lunch) that totals $32.00 and the sales tax to be added for that amount would be $1.92. So you can see how the amounts vary. It is entirely up to you as to how you want to handle this, but in any event, it’s a mandate and we must oblige. If you are a walk-in, we must collect sales tax.

The word “Spring” is the Perfect Metaphor for the Gospel. Springtime is a season of renewal, new growth and new life! For believers, spring is a reminder that God is all about making things new. In fact, Jesus promised to make everything new one day (Revelation 21:5). In the meantime, He gives us glimpses of that coming newness through spring.
Springtime always comes after winter. And so we wait. Waiting...waiting to see the first hint of green, the first newborn calf, the first crocus or the first robin. We know it’s coming, but it is that same new anticipation each year. It is the hope spring will bring new life, rain showers, pretty flowers and the sound of buzzing bees. We wait and hope for spring because there is nothing we can do to hurry it along. The coming of spring is out of our control. We jokingly look to a groundhog to tell us if spring is on its way, but we know it’s really our Father God who brings each new season. Spring is a time for growth. In nature, that comes from the right combination of sunlight and water. For our spiritual lives, it comes from the right combination of time with God in His word and time with other Christians in fellowship. The alternative is to be chaff that blows away and comes to nothing. It is interesting that scripture often talks of this season like a welcom-ing rain shower that nourishes the ground and soothes the parched land. Are you feeling parched and dry? Do you need some life-giving water?
Spring is a beautiful time of year. The hope of longer, warm and sunny days follows the cold and somewhat gloomy days of winter. This is also the time we reflect on Ash Wednesday, the journey to the cross through the season of Lent mourning on Good Friday and celebrating the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. The word Lent comes from the same root as the Angelo-Saxon word “lengthen.” In that tongue, it was a word for springtime when the daytime lengthens rapidly. Lent is, in essence, the Church’s springtime. Remember the Lord comes to us as the spring rain that waters the earth. The following are two beautiful Bible verses about springtime:
For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. (Isaiah 61:11) For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) In closing, let’s think about what personal development is really all about. Do we grow and mature in Christ for ourselves or is it about being a disciple and to pass on the good news to others? The Christian life is a balancing act between working like everything depends on you and trusting like everything depends on God. He will send the rain you need, but you’ve also got to do your part by working the harvest.
