Mozart’s Early Years• Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg,

Austria (1756)

• Known as a child prodigy in the musical world

• He performed with his sister and father and

traveled to many places

• They traveled to Augsburg, Brussels, Frankfurt,

London, Mannheim, Mainz, Stuttgart, and Paris

• Idomeneo was known to be his first great opera

introduced early in his life

Mozart’s Middle Life• Mozart continued to stay in Salzburg and conduct music until

opportunities dwindled

• Mozart came to the decision that Vienna was a “golden

opportunity” for a musical career

• He wrote fifteen piano concertos from 1782 to 1786.

• He received a minor court post as “Kammermusicus” which

was writing music for fancy balls

Mozart’s Middle Life • Joseph Haydn and Mozart became friends while in Vienna and

played many pieces together

• He created two wonderful operas called Lenozze di Figaro and

Don Giovanni after his successes inquartets, concertos, and a

few symphonies

Mozart Nearing Death • The later years of Mozart’s life began with

financial struggles

• In his thirties he wrote such notable works such

as The Magic Flute and many concertos

• Mozart is one of the greatest composers in

history.

• In half a lifetime Mozart conducted over 600

works of art

Famous Master Pieces

• The first great opera of Mozart was Idomeneo • The Marriage of Figaro is another great opera • Mozart introduced one of the most popular orchestral pieces

in history in 1787. The piece was named Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

• One of the famous symphonies is called the “Jupiter Symphony.”

• He also created the Requiem, which was a beautiful catholic mass

• He composed the The Magic Flute, a great symbolic opera

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik 1st Movement-

• It begins in allegro Sonata form• The composed piece begins in G Major• It late enters a slow like second step• Then the piece begins with a D major• A triad forms in the piece.• Violins take the work to a whole new

octave• A piano has a conclusion in forte• The epilogue stresses a D Major• Frequently throughout the piece it uses

C sharp• The song has many simple themes but

goes back to the original theme periodically

• It is played in C Major near the end of the 1st movement

• All instruments unite • All themes occur again in G Major• The violins unite at the end of the 1st

movement

• It all comes to a conclusion2nd Movement-

• The second movement is called Romanze

• It starts with an elegantly flowing theme

• It modulates from C Major and A Major• Continues on the same pitch• The main theme of the 2nd Movement

reoccurs throughout the piece3rd Movement-

• The 3rd movement is in Minuet form• It is comprised of a triple meter theme• It unfolds the main them and creates a

bridge to a new one• The new theme is a triad formation• The conclusion comprises of a

repetition of the trio theme
