Leading up to the big day…….

It seems to never fail that leading up to the big day of the start of a good show, that there is always a mad dash to get the proper gear prepared for the show. Insuring that the camera batteries are charged, making sure that my SD card is inserted into the camera and not left in the computer, obtaining the ever important food and drink items, just getting ready. The majority of the time it seems that I may have a bit of down time as the evening before comes to a close. I’ll log on to the social media net-work to see what’s going on out there. And low and behold there are pho-tos from the show I’m about to attend! This event in which folks who are able to get their early begin taking photos and posting them to the social media networks sets the mood Lead-ing up to the big day. This activity elevates the sensory organs and gets me super excited to get a preview of what the next days have in store for me. The event that took place a day or more before I was able to arrive began in January when I was on the way to the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California. I was on my way to my destination airport in Long Beach, upon arriving, grabbing the rental car and heading to New Port Beach for the night, I had completed my evening meal and retired to my hotel for a good night’s sleep. I just happened to log onto the social media network as always before hitting the hay and saw several of the AMBR contenders in all their glory getting set up for my arrival on Friday morning. Needless to say the senses went into overload mode with the excitement building, Leading up to the big day!!!! WMM

Every trip to Southern California should include a visit with the folks at So-Cal Speed Shop. Friday Morning January 25th I did just that. I couldn’t pick up my media credentials until 10am, so I decided to stop for a quick bite to eat in downtown Pomona then drove a few miles to East Grande for my first stop of the trip. So-Cal Speed Shop had their retail section open for visitors from all over the world there to check things out. Pete, Jimmy and the gang were getting ready for the show, so the shop was closed, however, I was able to get a quick shot of the entry way to the shop before the door was closed. I took a quick photo, wiped the rain water off of my feet and went in to check the place out. So-Cal Speed Shop was established in 1946 and founded by the legendary Alex Xydias. So-Cal Speed Shop is now run by Pete Chapouris. These guys produce some awesome traditional hot rods and now have shops in Arizona, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Sacremento and Western Canada. This shot is of headquarters in Pomona, California! Enjoy a few cool photos of the show room and front office. WMM

(top) This young lady was very friendly and greeted us as we walked into the front office (bottom) A sneak peak of part of the shop, before the door was closed.

Here we are in the show room. You too can have a chassis like this built for your hot rod at So-Cal Speed Shop. I just picked up a few gifts for now.

“Bitter Sweet” is this gorgeous ‘33 Ford Roadster owned by Harold & Tracy Chapmen from Andice,Texas. It is powered by a killer detailed Roush 427 backed by a Tremec TKO600.

V-8 Flyer is owned by James Farley out of Leominster, MA. The quality of design and workmanship of this nice little ‘32 Ford Roadster is off the charts.

Under the hood is so clean that it just sparkles as you can clearly see for yourself. The interior is done up right and the overall package wowed the spectators as well as the judges.

The 2012 Americas Most Beautiful Roadster award went to Bill Lindig and his ‘27 Ford Roadster Indy V-8. This hot roadster was built by Pete Chapouris and the crew at So-Cal Speed Shop in Pomona, Cal-ifornia.

This car has a long racing history. It was originally built by racer and race-car builder Jack Howerton almost 15 years ago.

Lindig had been watching and wishing to own this roadster and fi-nally bought it after waiting for 12 years. The purchase was completed in 2007.

So-Cal Speed shop worked on it for 4 years and it was selected as the 2012 AMBR winner by the judges at the Grand National Roadster Show in 2012.

Bill Lindig also owns this ‘32 Ford Chopped 3 Window Highboy Coupe. It’s powered by a 304 ci Blown Ardun Ford Flathead built by Art Chrisman. The awesome wheels are by Curtis Speed Equipment.

26 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com27

Here is George Poteet’s Rad Rides by Troy Built ‘69 Ford Torino Talladega. Powering this beast is a genuine BOSS 429 with Hilborn in-jection and backed by a Tremec 5 speed. Wheels are 18” and 19” Billet Specialties. WOW. Way too many modifications to list.

28 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com29

Troy Ladd owner of Hollywood Hot Rods brought out a couple of his recently completed cars to the Grand National Roadster Show. Hollywood Hot Rods is a full service Hot Rod builder, and Classic Car restoration shop. The company is built on the team approach where each and every member of the team has specialized skills and talents allowing Hollywood Hot Rods to be a step above the competi-tion. An example of what they have been able to accomplish has been noticed by the industry when Troy was named “2007 Trensetter of the Year” and Hollywood Hot Rods was the “2010 Builder of the Year”. Troy had an awesome display with a few cool cars. I’m bringing them to you beginning on page 32.

30 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com31

Here we have the ‘40 Ford also known as The Street Rodder RoadTour car for 2012. It was built byHollywood Hot Rods using a “brand new” steel body supplied by Bob Drake.

Troy made a small top chop which was no small feat. Troy and his crew were the brave individuals who pulled that off without issue and without negative-ly affecting Henry’s original design.

Ford provided one of their new Coyote motors that also powers the new Mustang GT.

Hollywood Hot Rods made it cool with tons of detail.

And Jerry Dixey of Street Rodder Magazine was lucky enough to rack up the miles during the summer of 2012.

Here recently this car even competed in the Optima Ultimate Street Car chal-lenge.

32 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com33

‘32 Ford Roadsters don’t get much sweeter than this. Changes everywhere. Too many to list. You have to love a Hemi Powered and injected deuce.

The interior is just beautiful and the detail work is off the charts. Check out the gauge cluster that keeps an eye on the big Hemi. I must now wipe the drool off of my keyboard.

34 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com35

Bobby Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop traveled all the way from their home in Tennesse to play in Southern California. I’ve seen “The Alloway” look at many of the shows I’ve attended back east while living in Tennessee. His styling is off the hook, his attention to detail and fit and finish are top notch. It’s very nice to see how the folks from California have adopted him as one of the nations top hot rod builders. I really enjoyed hearing the panel discussion where Bobby teamed up with several of the California boys to discuss “The Future of Hot Rod-ding” What an honor is was to be setting in the crowd for that hour. One of the moments I’ll charish for my remaining days. As you can see by the banner below and the numerous accolades that Bobby has won over the years he’s representing the eastern part of the US well. Congratulations Bobby and crew for winning the 2013 Builder of The Year!!!!

36 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com37

Great White a ‘67 Ford Fairlane is one of Bobby’s latest projects for own-er George Lang.

It features a potent Ford Boss 429 that is detailed to the hilt and looks like it was mean to be there in the engine bay.

The Boss is backed by a Keasler 5-speed to row through the gears.

The interior is covered in Red Leather and sports Custom Classic Instruments in a dash from a ‘67-’68 Mustang and is cooled by Vintage Air.

The wheels are one off Billet Special-ties knock-off wheels.

The suspension features an Art Mor-rison chassis and is painted in bright “Cloud White” PPG paint.

38 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com39

Competing in and winning first place in the Altered Street Road-ster is Bill Coulter’s ‘33 Ford Convertible from Paradise Valley, AZ. This ride is powered by an LS7 and backed by a 700 R4. Its interior was completed by Gabe’s Custom Upholstery.

It was built by Squeeg’s Kustoms.

This ‘32 Ford Hi Boy Roadster was spotted on the GNRS floor. It’s from San Jose and is powered by an awesome flathead.

40 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com41

This ‘48 Chrysler Town and Country Convertible is owned by Goodguys Founder Gary Meadors from Pleasanton. This car literraly has thousands and thousands of miles on the odometer as Gary drives his cars! Gary won the ‘13 Brizio Family award at the GNRS. The motorvation somes from a Gen 3 Viper V-10.

This interior in no way shape or form appears to have been trav-eled in all of the country, but it has!!! It has even been on the salt in Bonneville! 10,000 mile accumulated since Father Day in June!!!

42 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com43

44 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com45

Classic Industries took up quite a bit of the show floor with their stable of “corporate colored” rides. In the forground we have a cool Camero with Salt Flat wheeels.

Just the other side of the Camero we have a clean little Nova with the same paint scheme and same wheels. Then the Impala. Most have

been seen on various tv shows.

46 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com47

The interior has just the right amount of two-tone light grey leath-er with the signature dark red for the center of the steering wheel.

In additon to the previous cars that were built, we have the star of the display in my opinion. It’s a nice little Tri-5 Drop Top that was built on Chop Cut Rebuild. As you can see we have power provided by the Super Charged LSA. The body is a reproduction ‘56 shell from Real Deal Steel.

(top)““Possessed” is a ‘32 Chevroley Roadster Pickup. It has a TPI 350 ci engine wtih 350 HP. It’s backed by a 700-R4 with a Jag rearend and American Racing Wheels.(bottom) Cole Wolfswinkle ‘32 Ford Roadster took home the Steves Auto Restorations Award, Outstanding Paint and Engine Awards.

48 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com49

Mike Alexander of Grosse lle, MI won the ‘13 Blackie Gejeian Award with his ‘33 Ford Roadster. The interior is clean, custom and simple in appearance.

50 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com51

Dual Quad Chevy 409 powered and detailed to the max. Produces 450 HP and 560 ft lbs of torque. Notice the difference in the stock parts pictured vs the custom versions made for the ‘39.

“Double Take” Roger and Kathy Hill owns this ‘39 Chevrolet 2 Door Sedan from Vancouver, WA. It was built at Steve’s Auto Restorations in Portland, OR.

52 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com53

This ‘41 Ford Picup Truck is owned by Dave & Cammille Pozzi from South San Francisco, CA. It was built by South City Rod & Cus-tom and features a chassis by Roy Brizio Street Rods. The paint and body work were done Bill Ganahl and Joe Compani. All chrome work was handled by Sherm’s Custom Plating. The wheels and wide whites were delivered by Stockton Wheels.

“Gooney Bird”‘47 Ford Coupe - Greg Griffin - Temecula, CA sports a cool blue exterior, tons of chrome and killer caps and white walls. The stance is LOW!!!! It also won 1st place in the ‘58 New York Autorama. What a tremendous historical background!

54 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com55

Joe & Phyllis Moreno brought out their ‘41 Ford Custom from Phelan, CA. I love that white body with pink flames. California Cus-tom at its best!

Joe couldn’t decide on Hot Rod or Custom so he brought both! This ‘32 Roadster is pure Hot Rod with Hemi power!!

56 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com57

Jim “Bones” Noteboom from Hemet, CA won 1st place in the Radical Custom Wagon class with his ‘49 Cadillac Phamton Wagon. Originally a Sedanette. An awesome orange House of Color hue painted by Pete Santini, polished stainless and killer white walls wrap-ping Tru Spoke wheels complete the package. Notice the white fend-erwells with matching orange piping. I had the honor of meeting Jim during one of the seminars that was of-fered. What a Great Guy!!!

Body colored dash, light grey leather with orange piping and a two-toned ster-ring with custom console complete the clean interior.

58 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com59

Rick Bennett came all the way to Pomona from his home in Dan-bury, CT with his ‘51 Mercury Custom. It’s known as “The Mariani Merc”. Rick won 2nd place in the Radical Hardtop Ford/Mercury class for his efforts. It was also featured in TRJ #55.

The trunk is neat as a pin and clean as can be. The inte-rior features an origi-nal dash in body color with match-ing carpet. The seats are snow white as are the door panels.

60 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com61

Nick Rogers from Burlingame, CA had his ‘51 Mercury Sedan in competition in the Radical Hardtop class.

The engine is dressed in early Cadil-lac and looks great inside the engine bay with the white valve covers and Caddy air cleaner.

The interior is just as custom as the exterior with black and white leather with a custom built console.

Super Nice!!!!

62 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com63

California Kustom legend Richard Zocchi from Walnut Creek, CA took home the ‘13 Gorege Barris Kustom D’Elegance Award with this ‘62 Chrysler 300.

The paint job on this Kustom is out of this world and was completed by Art Himsl!!! Check out the stance and wide whites.

John D’Agostino’s latest ride a ‘40 Cadillac Coupe named “So-phia” was owner designed while OZ Customs did the body work and paint. Sherm’s Custom Plating did the pounds and pounds of chrome. This car was completed to pay tribute to Sophia Loren.

John’s Caddy gets low thanks to Ridetch and rides on Coker tires with wide whites.

64 www.wolfmotorsportsmagazine.com65

(top) Justin Hills owns this stunning silver ‘60 Dodge Dart. It competed in the Radical Hardtop class. In all the car shows I’ve been too all over the US this is the only Dart I’ve ever seen.(bottom) Louie Hoekstra from Lake Havasu City, AZ brought out his ‘39 Lincoln Zephyr Fastback. WOW!!!

Tech and is painted Dirty Lime Gold two-stage urethane.

The interior is bright white naugahyde with olive green GM carpet and is owner designed.

The drivetrain is all original.

I completed the day Friday at the GNRS and then made the trip to Huntington, Beach to hang out with good friend Chris Womack at his shop. Jason and Chris were hard at work on their next project which you’ll see on page 73. Chris showed me around his shop and told me tons of stories about what was going on with the projects in the shop and in the industry! You may recognize the photo on the front glass of the shop from the 2011 SEMA issue!! Thanks Again, Chris and Jason see you next time!

Jason was making some adjustements to the drivers side door, get-ting the gaps just right. I hope to see this truck when completed crus-

ing in The Lonestar State!

No California Hot Rod Shop should be complete with out a fully detailed Buick Nail-head waiting on a stand!

This my friends is an example of what happens when you park a ‘57 Chevrolet outside at Seal Beach. It will end up at the hot rod shop waiting its turn to be brought back to life.

Bench RacingBench Racing is defined in several different ways. The urban dictionary defines Bench Racing as:

1. To discuss quarter mile elapsed time of a car based on a list of modifications or horsepower estimate.2. To discuss the estimated output (in horsepower) of one engine versus another based on lists of modifications done to each engine.3. To discuss the estimated output (in horsepower) of one engine versus another based on lists of modifications done to each engine.

While I do agree with the Urban Dictionary’s definition of Bench Racing, Bench Racing in the context of this section of the magaine will be defined as:1. Discussion of ANYTHING automobile related between at least two individuals with the goal of passing time at a car show, sharing automotive related ideas, opinions or entertaining themselves or others.

Please feel free to share your bench race session wtih the readers by emailing:[email protected]

First Culvers Show……. I just attended the first Culvers show of the year last night on 3.16. The weather was great, a bit on the breezy side, but with temperatures dur-ing the day in the low 80’s the evening was perfect. I didn’t arrive until about 8:00 or so due to the mad dash to The Texas Motor Speedway earlier that day for the 3rd Annual Spring Goodguys Na-tionals in Fort Worth. Last night’s show at Culvers had a great turnout for the first show of the year. I got to do some serious bench racing with several of my good Gearhead buddies. Our topics of conversation varied from previous shows, to modifications made during what us Texas folk call the winter months to thinking about a good friend who had to be rushed to the Hos-pital last night with severe ailments. We wish he and his family the very best and wish him a speedy recovery. We missed you and your killer ’57 Chevrolet. Until next month. Keep on keepin’ on!!! WMM
