4 What’s Up

Christmas Trees for Sale!If you have had to go out into to the forest to cut down your own Christ-mas/New Year tree in previous years we salute you for your gallant lum-berjacking efforts. By the sounds of it, however, this year is going to be different. The Kyiv authority has introduced a system whereby all trees available for sale in the capital will come with a special label designat-ing the forestry company it came from. In addition, it will come with an electronic chip with all the necessary information about the tree. While this may seem a bit over the top, there have been reports of people heading out Chornobyl way in the past and picking up a pleasant little

holiday tree full of very unpleas-ant radiation, and nobody wants that. The good trees, or at least the ones that can be traced, will be available for purchase 15 December for 45 – 70hrv.

Tymoshneko’s Birthday In JailYulia Tymsohenko turned 51 at the weekend, and the poor thing had to celebrate her birthday this year behind bars. But she was not alone, as thousands made their way past barriers intended to keep them away (disguised as road works signs) to stand on the street outside her cell and celebrate on her behalf. Some top Ukrainian bands performed on a makeshift stage, and the throng of Tymoshenko supporters sang songs and danced, all of which might have raised the morale of our forlorn former PM. But then her daughter Zhenya told the press guards at the prison had moved her to an internal cell because she'd waved from her window. To add to her woes, First Deputy Head of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Renat Kuzmin, told press he had “irrefutable evidence” of Tymoshenko’s involvement in the 1996 murder of Ukrainian lawmaker and business-man Yevgeny Shcherban. Kuzmin said in an interview on Inter channel, “money has been transferred to the killers’ bank accounts from firms owned by Lazarenko and Tymoshenko,” referring to former prime minis-ter Pavel Lazarenko who was indicted with involvement in the crime and who is currently serving time in the US for money laundering. So it seems the current administration is pushing ahead with more convictions, which means we can kiss goodbye to EU membership for the nation once and for all.

It Costs Being a VIPAccording to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this country has more than 109,000 cars that come with a price tag of more than $100,000, and nearly 30,000 of them are registered here in Kyiv! Aston Martins take the cake as the most exclusive VIP vehicle here in the capital. With only 30 running in the entire country, there is an astounding 18 on file for the city of Kyiv. Interestingly, the Maybach and Roll-Royce take sec-ond fiddle to the British sports car manufacturer. But with nearly 35 of each racing up and down Kyiv roadways, they can hardly be called elite in this town. But what’s most surprising of all, is the turn Bentley has taken. With an astounding 392 of these machines registered in the country, more than 200 have homes here in Kyiv. Having completely lost all exclusivity, they are all but a mass-market product! Soon, there will no doubt be just as many Bentleys roaming about as there are Zhigulis and Ladas – won’t that be fun!

Zoloti Vorota Not Just a Metro Station According to the BootsnAll Indie Travel guide, our own Zoloti Vorota metro station is among the most beautiful metro stations in the world! Taking 11th place among the most artistic subway stations from around the globe, BootsnAll calls it rich in mosaic decoration. The station got its name from the historical building (the main gate into ancient Kyiv back in the 12th century) that resides just beside it. Opening for business on New Years Eve 1989, many of its more prominent features, such as de-pictions of the Princes of Kyiv Rus, are made of valuable white marble. First place in this friendly underground rivalry went to the Champs-de-Mars station in Montreal, Canada. Among others worth your time include the T-Centralen in Stockholm, Bayview in Toronto, Kennington in London and Slovyansky Boulevard in Moscow.

2 December 1960 A steel plant in the town of Kryvy Rih fires up the Kryvoriz-Komsomolska stove – at the time the biggest stove in the world!

3 December 1976 The Moscow Bridge crossing the Dnipro opens for operation. Considered one of the most beau-tiful bridges in the world for its silhouette of the Cyrillic letter L, architect Anatoliy Dobrovolsky drafted the plans for its construction and he did it for free!

6 December 1991The Ukrainian Armed Military Forces come into operation. As opposed to 23 February, which is the Day of the Soviet Army, this is the day many Ukrainian men recognise as the official day of the Ukrainian Army.

8 December 1991 Leonid Kravchuk, Borys Yeltsen and Stan-islav Shushkevych sign a document, which effectively puts an end to the existence of the Soviet Union. At the same time, an agreement is signed replacing the Soviet Union with the Commonwealth of Independent States. History has shown this CIS structure to be one of for-mality more than anything else, meant to sat-isfy Soviet nostalgia.

5 December 1994Signing the agreement to cease the produc-tion of nuclear weapons, Ukraine receives safety guarantees from Russia, Great Britain and the USA.

This Week in History

Two Kyiv Colleges Close The What’s On office has been in huge debate as of late over the qual-ity of education Ukrainians receive. We have a couple of highly edu-cated journalists working for us who have never paid a bribe in their lives. But does that mean they received a good quality education? While there are those who take the path of least resistance, dipping their fingers into daddy’s pocketbook rather than getting their heads in the textbooks, the closing of two Kyiv colleges recently reveals a poor education may not entirely be the fault of students after all. Two Kyiv colleges – Saint Princess Olha Kyiv Institute of Social and Cultural Relations and the Ukrainian Institute of Finance and Economy – have recently lost their teaching licenses. A regular state

inspection (which we find hard to believe actually occurs. Espe-cially considering Taras Shevchenko allegedly has some of the most corrupt professors, yet is considered one of the best schools in the country) cited a lack of scientific and methodological background; a lack of appropriate lecturers and teachers; and a low level of student merit to date as reasons for rescinding the licence. There has been talk that the Head of State Inspection of Educational Institutions, Mykhaylo Honcharenko, will be locating other schools in the area for the students to receive a “proper education”. Which schools those might be he did not say. He only mentioned four more colleges will soon find themselves in the same position – closed. Might it be the illustrious Taras Shevchenko University? The most prestigious in all of Ukraine? Keep posted to find out.

Larry King Live in KyivWith a career spanning more than 25 years, and the interviews he’s held somewhere around the 50,000 mark, the world-renowned American broadcaster, Larry King, was here in Kyiv earlier this week, making a special trip to interview Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. Tak-ing a tour around the Babin Yar memorial and laying a wreath at the monument to all of the victims, Mr and Mrs King continued on to the Pecherska Lavra. Making time to fit in an in-terview with the current Prime Minister of the country, Monday had the whole of Kyiv in a tizzy trying to get the story. While a Ukrainian news source currently pre-dicts the resignation of the PM, Larry King had nothing but nice things to say about the man. “He’s a person with a deep knowledge of world affairs, especially in the field of econom-ics. It seemed to me that he was very frank in expressing his opinion about Putin, the U.S. elections, and Tymoshenko,” he has been quoted as saying. King went on to say that he and his wife talked about the interview, mentioning Azarov would have been a successful US politician. He even went so far as to say that Azarov reminded him of Jimmy Carter. Whether this most recent chat with one of America’s toughest and forthright interview-ers will have any bearing on the decisions of the government in coming months, no can say. But to be honest, we’re quite interested in this man King is calling “straightforward and honest”. And would that guy please step up so that the rest of us can be introduced!

A New Government for Christmas? There have been reports bouncing about from the LigaBusinessInform information agency that the Ukrainian government might actually be dismissed. Yes, you read that right. The Ukrainian government disbanded! While we have certainly sent Santa our Christmas list, which of course includes a brand new shiny president, never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined this!According to the agency quoting a source close to the president himself, First Vice Prime Minister Andriy Klyuev, a native of Donetsk and seemingly influential politi-cian, has been named the lucky winner for the post of Prime Minister. It seems the gov-ernment under our current Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, who has on occasion been accused of a sexist racist homophobe, is not doing so well in the popularity polls as of late, and the resignation of his govern-ment is supposedly a foregone fact. The main argument cited rests around the massive amount of protests around the country as of late. While Yulia is no an-gel, her supporters remain diligent on the streets of Khreshchatyk as she languishes in jail. Parliament here in Kyiv has had to build a fence surrounding the property to keep demonstrators protesting the curtail-ing of social benefits at bay. But perhaps the most recent factor that could lead to the break-up of the current Ukrainian government is the death of a 70-year old physically handicapped retired miner on hunger strike in Donetsk. Trying to remove the protestors and their tents, possibly at the behest of our great PM, the police came in and trampled the poor man still inside. The government so far has refused to com-ment on the situation, which makes us wonder just what’s going on in there. One thing’s for sure, this is going to be an inter-esting holiday season.

V olunteering time and energy to a good cause is something anyone can do at any age. Many people choose to volunteer because of their strong sense of humanitarianism. But there are those looking for a little cultural adventure as well. With

reasons to get in involved in the dozens, both Eastern and Western Euro-peans have great choice in deciding where and how to offer their services. For those with the will but not sure about the way, organisations such as the European Voluntary Service (EVS) are a good a place as any to start. With only a few organisations here in Ukraine international volunteers can truly rely on, Alternative-V is the exception rather than the rule. Do-ing what they can to ensure a good experience is had by all, Alternative-V Secretary, Oksana Yuruk, says, “Volunteers will often arrive with an idea of the experience they are going to have. The reality, however, is always differ-ent. Whatever happens, it’s important to incorporate what you’ve learned into your daily life so you may use those lessons in the future.”

Time To HelpFelix Schmidtke from Germany is one such volunteer. Here for just a little over a year already, he says boys from his country have to decide whether to serve six months in the national army or serve the world community upon graduation from high school. Not unlike Felix, 60% opt for volun-teer work. “I wanted to break the stereotypes about Eastern Europe by choosing Ukraine for my project,” he says. “My mom was convinced I’d die here.” But as we sit and talk about his experience, I can see he is very much alive!Sharing a flat in Troeshchyna with two other non-English speakers, Schmidtke admits he was at his wit’s end after his arrival. “I was assisting a German teacher, which was not easy. I had no one to talk to. Plus I was always lost because of the chaotic system of public transport.” Signing on for just one year, his project placement ended this summer. He could have gone home. But he decided to stay for one more year, and today can be found living with a host family who has taught him to speak al-most perfect Russian! Continuing to offer his tutorial services in German, he gives private lessons now and admits he is thoroughly enjoying him-self this time round. “I’m going to explore Ukraine with ‘my family’ next spring,” he says. “We’ve already been to Crimea together!” Gareth Byss from the UK is another volunteer here. He spends his time translating Ukrainian into English for the website of a social organisation in Rivne. With no Ukrainian language experience whatsoever, he works with internet translators turning the text into readable English. Previous-ly employed as an international hospitality manager working throughout North America and Great Britain, “My job became so routine,” he says. “Everything was so perfectly organised I didn’t need to worry about any-thing. In Ukraine, no day is like the one before.” Before opting to become a volunteer, Gareth had visited Ukraine twice, and considers the lifestyle here pretty entertaining. “I communicate with my host family using body language. There is no hot water so I shower by pouring water over myself from a big bowl. And the roads! They are some-thing out of this world!”

An Incredible Experience Ukrainians too have a need to help, and while there is always need here at home, many say the projects are better organised across the border and

The world celebrates the invaluable work of volunteers around the globe this 5 December. Helping orphans with their homework, renovating old broken down buildings for those living in the projects or rescuing riverbanks and forests from litter, these are just a few of the ways in which many of the world’s humanitarians will no doubt be spending the day. Wanting to learn who these people are and what makes them get involved, What’s On went out into the community to find out first hand.

therefore often head in the direction of Latvia, Lithu-ania, Estonia, Germany, Iceland and Norway. Typical projects can last anywhere from 6 – 12 months. But there are short-term proj-ects available too, which many say is a good way to start out. Yulia Mitsenko from Zapori-zhya started volunteering after graduation. Offering her services to a project in Greece, she has twice worked with children with disabilities. “There were 15

volunteers, a few nurses and almost 100 kids. It was a lot of work but we were all treated like family!” Helping to feed babies, take kids to school and assist in daily therapy sessions, she offered her own classes for the kids in painting and modelling. “I loved my work, because there were no restric-tions. I could have given any class that suited me.” In addition to their daily duties, the volunteers would also take shifts to clean, shop or cook. Time was allocated for travel over the weekend, and living in Greece for six months Yulia learned a lot. “The Greeks I met really enjoy their lives. Despite the economic and political instability, they felt at ease.” Lybov Prudkova is another generous heart, and taking part in her first project at the age of 11, she too worked with disabled kids for a project here in Ukraine called Believe In You. Headed in the direction of Germany on her first international project, the task was to build a road through a cem-etery. Lybov admits being scared a lot! But says she took the job because it was all there was at the time and she was so eager to volunteer. Moving on to the Czech Republic, she spent three months educating kids about her home country. Not long after, she returned to Germany, this time as the leader of a children’s summer camp. “It’s better to choose smaller cities when looking to volunteer abroad,” she says. “It’s far more cosy and often more sincere. The locals always knew who we were and would often treat us to snacks and stories.”

Here At Home Back in Ukraine, the story isn’t so upbeat. Kateryna Sergeeva, coordina-tor for the Ukrainian social centre Volonter, says while they’ve got a base of 400 volunteers, quantity doesn’t always mean quality. “There are those who come just to make themselves feel better, and such people are typi-

cally untrustworthy. We need people who will spend time with the kids at children’s homes and orphanages we work with every week.” Because the children become so used to the volunteers, they begin to look forward to their weekly meetings. “It’s not only about playing with kids for a few hours. It’s about becoming a part of their lives. There is nothing better than that feeling of someone waiting for you.”Unfortunately, the practise of volunteering here in Ukraine is still in its infancy, and when people do talk about pitching in for the greater good, these days there is an immediate image of football that accompanies it. With almost 24,000 Ukrainians having already signed up to help out at this event, PR campaigns promoting EURO-2012 have no doubt done their job. What’s interesting, however, is only a quarter of them are people from Kyiv, and Mykola Vorobyov of the Volunteer Association worries they won’t be ready. “At the moment, only 400 volunteers are prepared. Lan-guage schools aren’t being paid and they simply refuse to carry on without a fee.” Another thorny problem is obligatory volunteering. Iryna Bodnar, Vice President of Ukraine’s Alternative-V, believes most of the volunteers are students and are being forced to offer their time. “We are losing the whole idea behind volunteer work and EURO 2012 is the cause. There will be people who never volunteer again because the country is making it obliga-tory.” While we can find no official information about mandatory assis-tance, Bodnar worries that people will come away with the “foolish to work for free” attitude. One of the reasons this type of attitude permeates Ukrainian society, has to do with the government. Deliberating on a new law social workers say obscures the rationale behind charitable organisations in general, Iryna Bodnar is far more candid. She calls it an absolute absurdity, explaining that organisations such as Alternative-V will cease to exist should this law receive approval.Further issues – far more ingrained in the system – rouse major indigna-tion among volunteer organisations left, right and centre. One of the big-gest problems currently forces charitable organisations to apply to an ex-ecutive department in order to be eligible for the status of non-profit. The funny thing is this executive department isn’t even set up. But then there are also difficulties surrounding age restrictions and compulsory insur-ance as well. While the idea of volunteer work here in Ukraine is very early stages just yet, there are those who know first hand the benefits that come from humanitarian aid. Many Ukrainians are fully aware of the re-wards charitable work affords. But it’s the experience, the emotion and the knowledge they have helped in some way that keeps them coming back. If we could change that “foolish to work for free” attitude in even just a small percentage of people, there’s no telling the kind of country this could be.

The Art of a NonconformistExhibition of paintings by Vudon Baklitsky and Mykola Tryhub, Tryptykh-Art Gallery (Desyatynna 13)From 30 NovemberVudon Baklitsky and Mykola Tryhub – both remarkable Ukrainian artists – have worked together for years and continue to advance the development of 1920s avant-guard art. Refuting the illusory perspec-tive found so often on canvas, they both consider it important to em-phasise expressiveness. Recognised for their dogged unconvention-ality, they have stubbornly refused to bend to the pressure of Soviet ideals, which is one good reason tensions are not only seen but felt behind the colour found on their palette. For more information call 279-0949.

With a Ukrainian line flowing promi-nently throughout, get your ticket back to another space and time! Tickets are 80hrv. For more infor-mation call 247-2316.

The Ancient ArtsGrand Chinese Circus II, October Palace (Instytutska 1)24 December – 2 JanuaryThe whole idea behind the circus originated in ancient Rome as a place to showcase the stunts of horses and equestrians. Since that time, however, they have evolved into a wide variety of feats and exploits meant to shock and amaze. Blessed with a week of the Grand Chinese Circus, theirs is a combination of ancient Chinese folk games and arts, perfected throughout the ages. Acrobats contort as if completely made of rubber while dancers move to music like they are dancing with the wind, and through it all, bril-liant costumes only add to the atmosphere of a fairytale coming to life. Tickets are 50 – 150hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

Flaming Guitar Didyulya (Belarus, flamenco, pop), October Palace (Instytutska 1)7 March at 19.00This Belorussian classic guitarist continues to impress audiences with his marvellous performances. Improving his technique as well as his compositions, Didyulya’s most recent album is called Aroma and is just the tip of the iceberg. Should you be the slightest bit dubious, check out a few of his tracks on YouTube before you get your tickets. Take our word for it, however: he’s much better in person. Tickets are 150 – 1000hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

The Best of BelindaBelinda Carlisle (US, pop), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)19 December at 19.00Belinda Carlisle began her career in the late 80s as the lead singer of one of America’s most popular all-girls bands, the Go-Go’s. Going on to a solo career in 1985, the girls have been on again off again since that time, allowing Belinda to do her thing. While her most recent release was an album called Voila in 2007, there is talk of a new solo album from the former Go-Go. Unfortunately, that is highly unlikely before her ap-pearance here in Kyiv. But then hits Circle In The Sand, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, La Luna, and California are still sure to please. Tickets are 200 – 1250hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

A Cross Between the Fish and the DrinkBlu Mar Ten (UK, house, breakbeat, ambient), Cinema Club (Entusiastiv 1)16 December at 22.22Blu Mar Ten is a production team from London, which has been around for over a decade and a half. Releasing their first track in 1996, they were a success over night ac-cording to Brit, DJ Fabio. Partnering up with Erykah Badu early on, they continued to soar up the charts. Picking up their musical pieces by a diverse set of DJs such as Ben Watt, Carl Cox and Tom Middleton, this should be a interesting night of ambient, electronica, drum’n’bass, and even a little techno. Tickets are 90hv. For more infor-mation call 555-5854.

All Things ConsideredIsrael

Our Dear Viktor is on his latest busi-

ness-begging trip, this time to the

land of King Herod and the Wailing

Wall. It seems the Israelis have

sensed his desperation, and have not

taken kindly to him.

State fundingIf you’re a Ukrainian wanting to leave

Ukraine, you could do worse than to

get involved in the film project ‘Good-

bye Ukraine’. It includes 30 or so

films about emigration, and it’s state

funded.

euro 2012 As the tournament draws nearer, the

excitement builds. The draw (being

held as this What’s On hits the

streets) will show us who is playing

whom, and will give us sufficient

time to lick our lips at the prospect of

all those football matches, one after

another.

ukraina Shopping Centre

Banks and shareholders are fighting

over the lucrative $50 million depart-

ment store. A new boss was recently

installed, only to be immediately

served with an injunction. Ukrainian

cat-fights are always good to watch.

Going to ChornobylA process by which Ukrainians and

foreigners could go to Chornobyl (ap-

proved by the Ministry of Something-

or-Other) has been ruled illegal by the

Kyiv District Court. This essentially

bans travel there. What, we ask, has

the world come to when you can’t go

to the site of a nuclear catastrophe.

Sunflower PhilosophyAfter the President’s pretend flirta-

tion with Europe, he’s now getting

into bed with Russia. We should have

seen it coming. Ukraine is the world’s

leading exporter of sunflowers. Con-

trary to popular opinion, sunflowers

do not track the sun. They typically

face east and do not move.

There’s a war being waged in my apart-

ment. It started lasted week, when

we noticed a big problem. It was a big

bug problem in fact, with big bugs suddenly

appearing in the bathroom. Half a dozen cock-

roaches had appeared and made their way into

our bathroom spider’s web.

My Austrian flat-mate Adolf (not his real name)

called the landlady. At first she said they were

common in Kyiv, and not a major issue. Then

she said as they were coming from outside the

flat, they weren’t her problem, and the mainte-

nance should deal with it. Finally she agreed

to send her son over, who arrived and put a

thin layer of paste around a hole in the wall

where (we think) they’re coming from. That

didn’t work, because the next day there were

two more.

Austrians are organised, and Adolf was on the

case. First he hit the worldwide web, learning

about their habits and habitats, and how best

to murder them. Then he went out and bought

the world’s supply of cockroach-killing equip-

ment. On his way back he sent a fantastic

SMS, saying simply, “We’re armed!”

Back home, he unfurled the bag of weapons.

Neither of us could understand the instruc-

tions, but he seemed to have bought every-

thing with a picture of a bug on it, plus ladies’

hairspray, because he said he’d never known

a more noxious substance, and that if it could

almost kill small children, it would probably

kill cockroaches.

First up were two small flat things saying

“Press.” When we pressed them nothing no-

ticeable happened, so we lay them behind

the toilet, hoping they’d emit some kind of

cockroach-targeted odour and smell them to

death (if the smell from our bathroom didn’t do

that first). Next up were other flat things with

sticky backs. From the diagrams, we assumed

they’d attract cockroaches and poison them,

killing them later. We hope that’s the idea any-

way, because the diagram just showed a cock-

roach walking over it and then walking away

again. We stuck them all over the house, after

a bizarre conversation along the lines of “If you

were a cockroach, where would you walk?”

Next up was the paste. Adolf went to work on ev-

ery rim, cupboard, corner and frame he could

find, like he was trying to finish the grouting

before a football match or something. Then

there was the spray. We started with the well-

known brands, and moved on to the Ukrainian

concoctions, which had far higher concentra-

tions of the sort of chemicals you want when

you’re at war. Finally we came to the hairspray.

Adolf looked proud and confident, like a gue-

rilla fighter who’d just been handed a rocket

launcher. Then I noticed the strange nozzle. It

turns out our final weapon was mousse.

Since the combined paste/spray/mousse/

smell/poison attack of last night, we’ve come

across cockroach lava and two baby cock-

roaches, so we think we’ve killed the parents

and the kids are now out for revenge. However,

we think we’ve got the upper-hand, having in-

advertently turned to psychological warfare.

Adolf had earlier tried to flush a cockroach

down the toilet, only to find it wouldn’t flush.

It’s been floating there for over a day now, as a

kind of gruesome warning to others. Plus we

both agreed it’s rather satisfying to ‘evacuate’

on the little bugger. In war, anything goes.

Dear Stephen,

I was faced with a strange situation in the subway yesterday. I’m quite adult, a mar-

ried lady with a child, and the times of flirtation on public busses or the metro I

thought passed away for me without return many years ago. And here life throws me a

surprise: walking to the escalator the other day and reading a book, as always, I hear

somebody walking very close to me – I raise my head and see a very handsome young

boy smiling and saying, “You’re such a beautiful girl, maybe we could go out together

one evening?” I wanted to shout, I’m too old for that! I’m married and have a kid! It

was all in my mind, whereas I could not say a word! What should I have answered to

him or any other guy trying to pick me up? (name and age with-held)

Dear With-held

Frotter (verb): “To gain erotic pleasure from rubbing up against random strangers in

crowded public areas.” Google it if you don’t believe me. You were frottered, my love.

Be careful. These frotterers are everywhere.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen

ANOTHER WINNER! We received a lot of good photos for the month of October. But after due consideration, we had to give the prize of two return tickets on board any UIA flight to DANIEL BLUM. Mr Blum was in Budapest over the summer and opted for a photo in front of the parliament buildings with our beloved What’s On. One of the things we liked most about this entry was that it actually contained a clearly recog-nised landmark. Congratulations Daniel from all of us here!

The Charitable Hearts of CCRDF

The Children of Chornobyl Relief and Development Fund is closing. Not only for the incredible work they have put in for almost 22 years, but for the people themselves, we will miss them dearly. Talking to Founder Nadia Matkiwsky, Financial Director Tanya Fesenko Vena and Country Director Alexa Milanytch in their official capacity one last time, you could cut the emotive atmosphere with a knife.

Tanya. “We sat on the cargo planes with the cargo, or met the cargo at its destination. We counted everything to make sure it all got on and then got off, and made sure everything that was picked up was done so by the right personnel.”It sounds pretty straight-forward. But anyone having visited this country will no doubt understand the hoops they’ll have had to jump through in these two decades. “Was it frustrating? Yes,” says Tanya. “You think you know the system, and then the next air lift comes along and the laws have been changed.” Nadia admits, however, the more obstacles there were the better they felt about being able to accomplish everything they set out to. And that has trickled down to the “fantastic staff” they’ve employed over the years, as Alexa will tell anyone she learned from the best: “It’s all about roll-ing up your selves and getting the job done.”

The Right Place at the Right Time As successful as they may have been over the years, they are closing up shop. “Sad as it is, emotional as it may be,” founders Zenon and Nadia are ready to spend time with their families. They had talked about various options so that the fund may remain open, but say no one has yet to knock down their doors with monetary offers. “I absolutely would love to have taken over the foundation,” says Alexa, “I love my job! But I cannot take on all the different functions I am supported with now. So we owe it to the executive team, to the founders to allow it to close, and although bittersweet we are confident we made the right decision.”Nadia acknowledges these times will not be repeated: “We were in the right place at the right time.” But that’s not to say their programmes will not live on without them, as almost everything they’ve established is self-sufficient, including the fund's final project: the implementation of Ukraine's first far-reaching telemedicine programme. Aside from this final gift, a value of $620,000, Alexa says CCRDF leaves behind an equally important legacy of inspiring other organisations to take a more active role in the healthcare system here in Ukraine: “Starting something, showing people how to do it, and allowing them to do it themselves.”While the closing of the fund will no doubt create a void, they all agree there are memories enough to write a book. Some of the most vivid for both Tanya and Alexa include seeing the children in the hospitals, and knowing that what they have done, and what their programmes continue to do, does in fact make a difference. For Nadia, it is the link she and Zenon shared with the doc-tors. “We are going to miss you,” they told them. “You were our hope.”

Having just come off the phone on an interview with the Voice of America Corporation, the question everybody wants to know is, “Have you run out of money?” Nadia looks at me as she re-lates her conversation with the reporter and says, “The answer

is no – we ran out of steam.”

Work to DoCCRDF first found its feet back in 1989 when Deputy Yavorivskiy from then USSR came to the US to talk about the changes that were occurring in Ukraine at the time. Meeting with Dr Zenon – Chief of Surgery at Union Hospital in New Jersey – and Nadia Matkiwsky, he was very worried the whole Chornobyl accident was being kept a secret. We have a problem, he told them, and then asked for help. Zenon’s birthday present that year was a trip to Ukraine, and making their way over in November, they met everyone in government, from top to bottom. “We arrived emotional but excited! The Minister of Health took us to a hos-pital where a woman was giving birth. The conditions were appalling and I could feel the tears coming. I turned to Zenon and said, ‘We have so much work to do’.” Once that was decided, they went to work and established the Children of Chornobyl Relief and Development FundOver the last 22 years, CCRDF has been responsible for 32 airlifts, 18 shipments and $63 million worth of medical assistance for children here in Ukraine. “In those first few years, we did all the packing,” remembers
