PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Since our February General Membership meeting, the quarter has passed quickly. I thought Col. Rod Clark, the Senior JROTC Instructor at East Hender-son High School, did an outstanding job in bringing us up to date about the JROTC program. From the post-ing of the Colors, to the flag folding ceremony, to the video depicting a week in the cadets life at Leadership Camp, plus the Q & A session the presentation was terrific. I never realized the number of cadets that yearly enter the service academies through the JROTC program. In addition to East Henderson High, our Chapter actively supports 16 other High School
JROTC programs. We had 82 in attendance!
The May General Membership Meeting will feature another Chapter member as our speaker, Lt Ted Logan, USAAC, a World War II pilot, and author. His book ‘Jump, Damn it, Jump” describes in detail his 34th bombing mission. Plan to attend. Come hear this
great survival story.
On March 23rd and 24th, John Knapp and I traveled to Winston-Salem to attend our first North Carolina State Council of Chapters MOAA meeting. Senator Burr spoke to the gathering about many issues affecting the military today. He is very supportive of the active military and retirees and the VA programs. We were impressed that our MOAA voice was being heard in Washington. Our Chapter will host the Council meet-ing in Hendersonville in August. Meeting details will
be in the next newsletter.
Annually we receive from MOAA a list of eligible offi-cers who live in our Chapter area. In the past we have mailed letters to these potential members inviting

them to join our Chapter. In most cases this effort has not produced the results we expected. It seems that our best recruiters are our present members. That’s YOU. Ask a retired officer you know who is not a Chapter member to join our Chapter. Invite them to a meeting. Just think if every member recruited a mem-ber! That would be Awesome! But meanwhile, our own Chapter member, LtCol Bob Augur, Has volun-teered to be our designated caller. Bob actively works the MOAA list and calls on the “Potential” list. Bob has an excellent recruiting track record. Keep up the good
work.
Remember to keep your post cards, letters and e-mails going to Washington. MOAA makes it easy by providing the letters and cards in the monthly MOAA magazine. Even better is a handwritten note to your Representative and Senators asking them to remem-ber the promises made to us who served. We have
earned it, yet we must fight to keep it.

The following is the first in a series of articles designed to help inform and protect our local MOAA
members.
TELEPHONE SCAMS
Scams are increasing at an alarming rate, with WNC a favorite target of these crooks. Military veterans are also a favorite target which makes our members twice as attractive to the individuals that are en-
gaged in this behavior.
Telephone scams are any attempt to unlawfully obtain personal information that can be used in finan-cial crimes (i.e. getting into your bank account), any attempt to sell you something that you don't need or that doesn't exist (i.e. special toilet paper that will be required for all septic systems, which was false), any attempt to lure you into paying for a lottery prize (this comes mainly out of the Caribbean and Af-rica), or any other telephonic attempt to separate you from your money. Some recent examples of tele-phone fraud include the Microsoft scam, people claiming to be from official government agencies, keep-
ing you on the phone as your account is emptied.
The Microsoft scam occurred last year and spread all over the world. It involved a phone call from someone claiming to be with Microsoft security. This individual would state that there was a security problem with the victim's computer and that Microsoft needed the IP address of the infected computer to fix it remotely. Once this individual had the IP address, he/she could access all the information in that computer. If this occurs to you, report it to Microsoft. If you have a virus or a security issue, you
need to contact Microsoft yourself, they will not contact you.
People, who call claiming to be from a government agency, when they are not, are after the victim's so-cial security number. Never give your number out to a person who calls you. If you are targeted by this type of scam, you need to report this to the Federal Trade Commission through usa.gov. If it is a Medi-
care oriented scam, call 1-800-MEDICARE to report the incident.
There are some common sense steps that you can take to help protect yourself.
1. Never trust an unsolicited call. If you are interested in their claim or product, get a number and call
them back.
2. Do not confirm account or identity information unless you are calling a number you trust.
3. Never agree to pay for a prize. It is illegal to ask for payment and this is one of the most popular
scams.
4. Review all your phone bills. Make sure no unauthorized changes have occurred in your service or
provider.
5. Block your calls. For instance Charter has a service whereby you can reject anonymous calls (*77 to activate), screen phone calls (*60), or select the calls you choose to let through (*64). If you want to
have fun with the scammers, you can choose call return (*69) and really ruin their day.
6. If you just don't want to be bothered by scammers, robo-callers, or unwelcome businesses, you can
register at www.DoNotCall.gov or 1-800-382-1222 to be added to the National Do Not Call Registry.
Scammers count on their victims being elderly, lonely, naive, or susceptible to strangers. Don't fall for
their lies, remember, you are your own best line of defense.

Dues are PAST Due!
Our bylaws spell out a dues period of January 1 through December 31 and are payable Jan 1 and become
past due after 60 days. The amount for this year was set at the annual meeting (August) after recommenda-
tion of the Board of Directors. At that time the general membership set the dues at $25 for regular member
and spouse, and $5 for Auxiliary (surviving spouse). It has been also approved to reduce them to $10 for
new members joining after July for their first year. Currently 57 members are past due for 2012. We now
have 227 members. Many thanks to those who paid in advance. Please check the number above your
name on the newsletter and that will show what we have on record. If it indicates 2011 then please send in a
check for the appropriate amount. If your records indicate you have paid for 2012 and we show differently
please let me know.
Please consider a donation to the chapter to help fund our efforts to give back and support other veterans.
We are now a 501-c(19) Veterans Organization recognized by the IRS. Many thanks to our Treasurer, Mike
Covell for this complicated effort! Our chapter continues support for the ABCCM Veteran’s Restoration Quar-
ters, JROTC through the Cyrus E. Anderson Scholarship and leadership awards, and programs at the VA
Medical center. Consider being a presenter at a school near you. Note on your check the amount for dues

Chapter in Action
The chapter donated $200 to the VRQ to provide some spending money to the 65 VRQ Vietnam Veterans
who attended the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home event at Lowes Motor Speedway on March 31st.
Thanks to Ted Minnick for bringing this opportunity to our attention. This was a fantastic event and a lot of
credit goes to Sen. Burr who was instrumental in making this long overdue event happen. Bob Smith was
on duty with the NC Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association that had six Vietnam Vintage helicopters on
display, as usual they were a very popular part of the event.
Our new Legal Chair, Micky Parnell has been active with the Buncombe Veteran’s Council regarding the
Scams that are out there that prey on many senior citizens. Thanks to Micky and Bob Augur!
Fund Raiser: With the cooperation of Autobell Car wash our chapter will sell tickets for $15 for a full ser-
vice car wash. The chapter will earn $7 for each ticket sold. They will be good for one year. They have
two locations in Hendersonville and one in Asheville. Tickets will be sold to members and the general
public. The proceeds will go to the general fund which pays for VRQ, JROTC, and VA Hospital support.
There is basically no risk to the chapter, we pay them for what we have sold and turn in the unsold ones.
Thanks go out to John Knapp for this idea and a potential Army/Navy Game viewing party at the Flat Rock
Cinema. Depending on game time (determined by TV coverage) we may be able to reserve the facility
and enjoy a little service rivalry and fun, food, and drinks.

“Adequate!” by Chaplain (Colonel) Robert E. Lair, Jr.
On February 3, 1943, a troop transport, the USAT Dorchester, was hit by a German torpedo. En route from New-
foundland to Greenland, the ship sank in twenty minutes into the icy waters. Of the 904 men on board, 678 were
lost in action. Among the soldiers aboard were four relatively new Army chaplains (all 1st Lieutenants). Survivors
later testified that all four voluntarily gave their life vests to other soldiers. They focused their attention on calming
the panic on board and maintaining order as men boarded life boats. Surviving witnesses told of seeing the four
chaplains joining arms as the ship sank. The chaplains were: Andrew Goode (Jewish), George Fox (Methodist),
John Washington (Catholic) and Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed).
Clark Poling’s father later shared the content of his son’s last letter: “I know I shall be in your prayer, but please do
not pray simply that God will keep me safe. Pray that God will make me adequate!”
All four of these men were indeed adequate.
Defense News
Industry Task Force Paints Alarming Picture: Impending cuts to the defense budget of some $480 billion
over the next decade "will stifle the ability of the defense industry to deliver innovation and urgent wartime ca-
pabilities," warned the Defense Industrial Base Task Force last week. Worse, reductions beyond that, up to
the $1 trillion sequestration level outlined in the 2011 Budget Control Act, "would severely damage the de-
fense industrial base as a commercially viable enterprise, as a reliable and responsive provider of urgent war-
time needs, and as a national strategic asset that is indispensable to the defense of the United States," ac-
cording to the report that the task force publicly released on Jan. 6. "This report paints an alarming picture for
the future of the aerospace and defense industry," said Aerospace Industries Association President Marion
Blakey in a release. The report is based on a task force survey of several dozen companies. The task force is
comprised of companies from AIA, the National Defense Industrial Association, and Professional Services
Council.
Congress Allows Retirement of Six B-1s with Caveats: The Air Force may proceed with plans to phase
out of service six of its 66 B-1B bombers in this fiscal year, according to the enacted Fiscal 2012 defense leg-
islation. However, lawmakers stipulated in the omnibus spending act, which includes this year's defense ap-
propriations, that the Air Force must "reinvest a larger portion" of the savings realized from retiring those six
bombers in the remaining B-1 fleet than the "less than 40 percent' that the service proposed. Language in the
defense authorization act stipulates that USAF may not retire any B-1s until it reports to Congress on the de-
tails of the plan, including "an estimate of the savings that will result" each year through 2022 and how it in-
tends to modernize and sustain the B-1 fleet through then. The authorization act also directed the Air Force to
maintain at least 33 combat-coded B-1s through Fiscal 2016. President Obama signed the omnibus spending
act, H.R. 2055, into law on Dec. 23. He inked the defense authorization act, H.R. 1540, on Dec.31

subsequent tsunami pummeled that nation. On March 2, a jihadist-inspired gunman killed SrA. Nicholas J.
Alden and A1C Zachary R. Cuddeback in an unprovoked attack in Frankfurt, Germany. Also in the month, the
Air Force launched its second X-37B orbital test vehicle into space, and took delivery of its 268th and final
