Personal Encounter with Jesus Christ Alive in the Church“Celebrating this (Extraordinary Missionary) month will help us first to rediscover the missionary dimension of our faith in Jesus Christ, a faith graciously bestowed on us in baptism…. Through our communion with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we, together with so many of our other brothers and sisters, are born to new life…. This missionary mandate touches us personally: I am a mission, always: you are a mission, always; every baptized man and woman is a mission…. Each of us is a mission to the world, for each of us is the fruit of God’s love…. From eternity (God) has destined each of His children to share in His divine and eternal life (cf. Eph 1:3-6).”

Witness of Missionary Saints and Martyrs“How many saints, how many men and women of faith, witness to the fact that this unlimited openness, this going forth in mercy, is indeed possible and realistic, for it is driven by love and its deepest meaning as gift, sacrifice and gratuitousness (cf. 2 Cor 5:14- 21)! The man who preaches God must be a man of God (cf. Maximum Illud).”

Catechesis in Missionary Discipleship“The Church is on mission in the world… A Church that presses forward to the farthest frontiers requires a constant and ongoing missionary conversion…. Our mission, then, is rooted in the fatherhood of God and the motherhood of the Church. The mandate given by the Risen Jesus at Easter is inherent in Baptism: as the Father has sent me, so I send you, filled with the Holy Spirit, for the reconciliation of the world (cf. Jn 20:19-23; Mt 28:16-20). This mission is part of our identity as Christians…The missio ad gentes, which is always necessary for the Church, thus contributes in a fundamental way to the process of ongoing conversion in all Christians.”

Charity to Mission“Charity, of which we have a foretaste in the sacraments and in fraternal love, impels us to go forth to the ends of the earth (cf. Mic 5:4; Mt 28:19; Acts 1:8; Rom 10:18) … The Pontifical Mission Societies serve the Church’s universality as a global network of support for the Pope in his missionary commitment by prayer, the soul of mission, and charitable offerings from Christians throughout the world. Their donations assist the Pope in the evangelization efforts of particular Churches (the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith) … In renewing my support for these Societies, I trust that the Extraordinary Missionary Month of October 2019 will contribute to the renewal of their missionary service to my ministry.”

Encuentro personal con Jesucristo vivo en la IglesiaLa celebración de este mes nos ayudará en primer lugar a volver a encontrar el sentido misionero de nuestra adhesión de fe a Jesucristo, fe que hemos recibido gratuitamente como un don en el bautismo. Nuestra comunión con Dios, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo es fuente de una vida nueva junto a tantos otros hermanos y hermanas. Es un mandato que nos toca de cerca: yo soy siempre una misión; tú eres siempre una misión; todo bautizado y bautizada es una misión. Cada uno de nosotros es una misión en el mundo porque es fruto del amor de Dios. Dios nunca renuncia al don de la vida, sino que destina a todos sus hijos, desde siempre, a su vida divina y eterna (cf.Ef 1:3-6).”

Testigo de los santos y mártires misionerosCuántos santos, cuántas mujeres y hombres de fe nos dan testimonio, nos muestran que es posible y realizable esta apertura ilimitada, esta salida misericordiosa, como impulso urgente del amor y como fruto de su intrínseca lógica de don, de sacrificio y de gratuidad (cf. 2 Co 5,14-21). Porque ha de ser hombre de Dios quien a Dios tiene que predicar (cf. Carta apost. Maximum illud).

La catequesis en el discipulado misionero“La Iglesia está en misión en el mundo... Una Iglesia en salida hasta los últimos confines exige una conversión misionera constante y permanente. Así, nuestra misión radica en la paternidad de Dios y en la maternidad de la Iglesia, porque el envío manifestado por Jesús en el mandato pascual es inherente al bautismo: como el Padre me ha enviado así también os envío yo, llenos del Espíritu Santo para la reconciliación del mundo (cf. Jn 20,19-23; Mt 28,16-20). Este envío compete al cristiano. La missio ad gentes, siempre necesaria en la Iglesia, contribuye así de manera fundamental al proceso de conversión permanente de todos los cristianos."

Caridad a la misión“La caridad, que pregustamos en los sacramentos y en el amor fraterno, nos conduce hasta los confines de la tierra(cf. Mi 5,3; Mt 28,19; Hch 1,8; Rm 10,18). Las Obras Misioneras Pontificias manifiestan su servicio a la universalidad eclesial en la forma de una red global que apoya al Papa en su compromiso misionero mediante la oración, alma de la misión, y la caridad de los cristianos dispersos por el mundo entero. Sus donativos ayudan al Papa en la evangelización de las Iglesias particulares (Obra de la Propagación de la Fe) ... EVERY YEAR, SOMETHING SPECIALHAPPENS on the next-to-last Sunday of October. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY joins all Catholics of the world - all of us children of God - into one community of faith. At Mass that Sunday, we recommit ourselves to our common vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

This year, Pope Francis addresses his World Mission Sunday message to us as we live out the adventure of being children of God. What a wonderful way to imagine the mission we have received from the Lord! It is a revitalizing adventure. When all the children of God, at every stage of life, reflect on the fact that our lives are a mission, our faith remains ever young.

As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Together with children of God in every corner of the globe, we become voices for mission, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions.

In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as children of God, His missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses.

El Domingo Mundial de las Misiones une a todos los católicos del mundo, a todos nosotros los hijos de Dios, en una sola comunidad de fe. World Mission Sunday celebrates our baptismal call to continue Christ’s mission with our brothers and sisters half a world away, through our prayers and sacrifices.Here are seven steps to celebrate World Mission Sunday in your parish:

• Review the enclosed World Mission Sunday resources. These are also available at missionsla.org/wms.

• Share these resources with your parish staff, council and liturgy committees, and discuss how to both promote and celebrate WMS during that Sunday’s liturgy.

• Include in weekly homilies and bulletins Archbishop Gomez’s Mission Sunday letter or a message from your executive director, Msgr. Terrance Fleming.

• Display the enclosed posters before World Mission Sunday – and during the entire “Extraordinary Missionary Month” (October).

• Distribute World Mission Sunday envelopes throughout your parish pews.

• Welcome a missionary to share their experiences with your parishioners, which can be arranged by contacting the Mission Office at (213) 637-7223.

• Celebrate World Mission Sunday with your entire parish community – your school and/or religious education program, parish organizations, and, most especially, during the Liturgies of World Mission Sunday weekend.

CELEBRATING WORLD MISSION SUNDAY IN THE LITURGY

From the Roman Missal, use the Mass prayers from the Mass for the Evangelization of Peoples (found in the Mass formularies under “Masses for Various Intentions.”)

You might find two Eucharistic Prayers that are especially appropriate for World Mission Sunday are: “The Church on the path to unity” and “Jesus, who went about doing good.”

The Sprinkling Rite might be used to solidify our baptismal call to our role with our mission family.

UNIVERSAL PRAYER (PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL):

Celebrant:

On this World Mission Sunday, in this Extraordinary Missionary Month, we remember Jesus’ call to go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel. We ask God’s blessing that, through our self-giving, the “Good News” of Jesus may be proclaimed to all nations and peoples.

Deacon/Reader:

• For a personal encounter with Jesus Christ, Who is alive in the Church, that the Holy Spirit will guide our catechetical formation for mission, and that our love for the Church’s mission, which is a passion for Jesus and a passion for His people ‘grow ever stronger,’ let us pray to the Lord.

• For our Holy Father, Pope Francis, first missionary of the Church, and for all missionaries and martyrs who give their lives to tell the glory of the Lord among the nations, especially martyred Sister Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN, a voice for the indigenous peoples of the Amazon and a faithful servant of the Gospel, that they may be loving, wise and holy witnesses of Christ, our Savior, let us pray to the Lord.

• For the witness of missionary saints, especially patroness St. Thérèse of Lisieux and patron St. Francis Xavier, that they may intercede for the fervent missionary spirit of the faithful of our Universal Church, both nearby and far away, let us pray to the Lord.

• For the leaders of nations, that they may be committed to justice for all peoples - especially indigenous peoples and those persecuted for their faith, that our leaders may also be dedicated to preserving our common home and building a world at peace, let us pray to the Lord.

• For an increase in missionary charity, that our spiritual and financial sacrifices may help the message and love of our Lord be made known to the ends of the earth, let us pray to the Lord.

• For those who are ill or who live in spiritual loneliness, that they may unite their sufferings with theCrucified Christ for the redemption of the world, let us pray to the Lord.

God our Father, you bless us with the gift of faith. Increase our faith as we answer the call to take part in the worldwide mission of Jesus. We ask this through Your Son, Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the World.

Reflections on the readings for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (October 20, 2019):

Exodus 17:8-13; Psalm 121:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2;Luke 18:1-8

The necessity for real perseverance in living out various aspects of our faith is expressed throughout today’s liturgy. In the Book of Exodus and in the Gospel according to Luke we find the importance of enduring in prayer. Moses may be utterly exhausted with his efforts and the widow in Jesus’ parable feels she may never find justice, but both persist and both prevail. God wants us to put ourselves in His hands, even when what we ask for does not come quickly or easily. We need to remember that He alone knows the right time for His will to be done. He wants us to show our confidence in Him through our prayers and our actions. Our Lord loves us now and always. And He wants to know that we, in turn, love Him, and that we understand He will care for us – body and soul – according to His plan.

In addition to the need for persevering in prayer, we must be willing to continue to live out the mission God has chosen for us. Whatever our calling or state in life, we are commissioned to reveal our faith and spread the message of God’s Kingdom. In the letter from Paul to Timothy, we are reminded of the importance of appreciating sacred Scripture and sharing it with others. “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage though all patience and teaching”(2 Timothy 4:1-2). Whether we are among those who travel the world as missionaries or those who never leave their hometowns, we all have opportunities to share the Good News of salvation through Jesus. And it is not for us to decide if a time is convenient or inconvenient.We need to be ready, willing and able to welcome our neighbors tothe knowledge and compassion of our beloved Lord. And we can only succeed if we choose the will of God above our own, over and over again.

On this World Mission Sunday in the Extraordinary Missionary Month, we recall that we too are to continue the mission of our Lord. Our prayers and sacrifices on this Sunday join with those offered in churches and chapels around the globe, supporting those who “proclaim the word” and serve the poor persistently, often in difficult and dangerous circumstances.

Reflexiones sobre las lecturas del 29º domingo del tiempo ordinario (20 de octubre de 2019):

Éxodo 17:8-13; Salmo 121:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; 2 Timoteo 3:14-4:2;Lucas 18:1-8

La necesidad de una verdadera perseverancia para vivir diversos aspectos de nuestra fe se expresa a lo largo de la liturgia de hoy. En el libro de Éxodo y en el Evangelio según Lucas, encontramos la importancia de perdurar en la oración. Moisés puede estar completamente agotado con sus esfuerzos y la viuda en la parábola de Jesús siente que ella nunca podra encontrar justicia, pero ambos persisten y ambos prevalecen. Dios quiere que nos pongamos en sus manos, incluso cuando lo que pedimos no llega rápido o fácilmente. Necesitamos recordar que solo Él sabe el momento adecuado para que se haga su voluntad. Él quiere que mostremos nuestra confianza en Él a través de nuestras oraciones y nuestras acciones. Nuestro Señor nos ama ahora y siempre. Y quiere saber que nosotros, a su vez, lo amamos y que entendemos que Él cuidará de nosotros, cuerpo y alma, de acuerdo con Su plan.

Además de la necesidad de perseverar en la oración, debemos estar dispuestos a continuar viviendo la misión que Dios ha elegido para nosotros. Cualquiera que sea nuestro llamado o estado en la vida, se nos ha encomendado revelar nuestra fe y difundir el mensaje del Reino de Dios. En la carta de Pablo a Timoteo, se nos recuerda la importancia de apreciar las Sagradas Escrituras y compartirlas con otros. “Te ruego delante de Dios y de Cristo Jesús, juez de vivos y muertos, que ha de venir y reinar, y te digo: 'predica la Palabra, insiste a tiempo y a destiempo, rebatiendo, reprendiendo o aconsejando, siempre con paciencia y dejando una enseñanza.”(2 Timoteo 4:1-2). Ya sea que estemos entre aquellos que viajan por el mundo como misioneros o que nunca abandonen sus lugares de origen, todos tenemos oportunidades para compartir la Buena Nueva de la salvación a través de Jesús. Y no nos corresponde a nosotrosdecidir si un momento es conveniente o inconveniente. Necesitamos estar listos, dispuestos y capaces de dar la bienvenida a nuestros vecinos al conocimiento y compasión de nuestro amado Señor. Y solo podemos tener éxito si elegimos la voluntad de Dios por encima de la nuestra, una y otra vez.

En este Domingo Mundial de las Misiones en el Mes Misionero Extraordinario, recordamos que nosotros también somos “bautizados y enviados” para continuar la misión de nuestro Señor. Nuestras oraciones y sacrificios en este domingo se unen a los que se ofrecen en iglesias y capillas de todo el mundo, apoyando a aquellos que “proclaman la palabra” y sirven a los pobres de manera persistente, a menudo en circunstancias difíciles y peligrosas.

What is the origin of World Mission Sunday?

In 1926, Pope Pius XI instituted World

MissionSunday. He asked for prayer, animation, celebration,and offerings for the Missions. His concern was to engender a sense of responsibility in people for supporting the Missions throughout the world.

The first commemoration was in 1927 and the Pope asked that it would be observed in every diocese, parish and institute. It was to be a true World Mission Sunday.

The collection on that first World Mission Sunday, like today, is for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, providing support for the life-giving and hope-filled work and witness of priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders in mission churches.
