Wireless vs Wired
If the Wire is where you need it, when you need it, at a price you can afford and provides the capacity required…..then use it!
However….Life is rarely that easy
Wireless offers the capability to provide
Rapidly Deployed Camera Locations
Provide Video coverage in hard to reach areas
Potential for significant cost savings over wired solutions
For new installations –
the preference is becoming Wireless 1st and Wired 2nd

Designing Hierarchical Solutions
Wired Solutions are typically designed as part of a functionality hierarchy – Client, Access/Edge, Distribution, Core/Backbone
So why should a wireless network design be any different?
`
Access
Distribution
Backbone

Common Design Misperceptions
Security“Wireless networks can be hacked….”
Availability“Wireless networks are much more prone to effects from the
environment than wired networks…”
Capacity“Wireless networks have far lower bandwidth than wired
networks…”
Flexibilty“You are constrained in how powerful your signal can be,
significantly reducing the distance that you can transmit…”
MOTOROLA WIRELESS BROADBAND SONY PROFESSIONAL 19
Security
Question – What type of security do I need?
Because wireless has a perception of being vulnerable
Enterprise products are designed with high-levels of security in mind….unlike many wired products
Considerations
How vulnerable is the physical deployment?
How long is my asset in place?
What level of encryption should or can I use?
How does the wireless link fit into my End-to-End Security Eco-system?
MOTOROLA WIRELESS BROADBAND SONY PROFESSIONAL 20
Availability
Can I Achieve 99.999% availability with a wireless solution?
...YES!
…but just like wired solutions it’s a cost vs requirement argument
Considerations Confirm what frequencies are available for deployment
Conduct RF and Physical Site Surveys
Consider potential local environmental changes
Deploy overlapping Camera coverage positions on different frequencies
Create resilient Backbone links for Aggregation Connections
Create a Frequency plan BEFORE you deploy
Designing availability for wireless faces similar challenges as wired
Comes down to a cost vs. requirement argument and proper design
MOTOROLA WIRELESS BROADBAND SONY PROFESSIONAL 21
Capacity
What bandwidth do I need today and what do I need tomorrow?
Considerations Agree Video Quality/Camera Specification required – and get it in writing!
Focus on MPEG4 or H264 codec solutions at the edge
Use built-in analytics and local storage solutions to minimise traffic loads
Design Distribution and Backbone solutions with future growth in mind
Reserve bandwidth for downlink communication – critical for PTZ response
Implement QoS and traffic shaping for critical cameras
Capacity is a network-wide system consideration
Not just how much bandwidth I need at one camera location
MOTOROLA WIRELESS BROADBAND SONY PROFESSIONAL 22
Flexibility
Where do I need my camera and for how long does it have to be there?
Considerations Location is key - Expensive/Intelligent cameras are useless unless deployed
where needed
Deploy camera Low-site and Wireless backhaul at High-site
Consider Mesh WiFi solutions for localised deployments that need mobile user
access – but use high-capacity PTP links for backhaul
Wireless solutions offer significant flexibility for re-use - but Pre-plan your
deployment locations
Wireless offers significant advantages over wired solutions with regards to Flexibility
But only if the network has been planned correctly
MOTOROLA WIRELESS BROADBAND SONY PROFESSIONAL 23
Designing Wireless Video Surveillance Networks
Architecture Create Hierarchical Wireless Network designs
Apply apporpriate levels of Security, Availability, Capacity and Flexibility as
needed
Security Consider the End-to-End Security Requirements
Make the Security applicable to the requirement or the asset
Don’t neglect internal security requirements
Availability
RF and Site Planning is a key requirement
Don’t assume the environment never changes – perform ongoing network
evaluation check
Don’t over-plan link availability if the asset or traffic doesn’t warrant it
Capacity Don’t just plan for today – plan for growth
Lock down and agree camera specifications
Utilise Intelligent Analytics and Effecient CODECs to minimise Bandwidth impact
Flexibility
For rolling networks – pre-install permanent mounting/power requirements to
minimise tear-down and put-up times.
Plan aggregation links with moveable cameras locations in mind
Assess the need for mobile access to the network

Operation Pegasus : Labour Party Conference Bournemouth
Stats• Nearly 20,000 attendees
• More than 20 different protest group demonstrations
• Gordon Brown’s first political conference as Prime Minister
• Heavily restricted access before and during the event
• Tried and tested roll-out procedures for Security Enforcement
Operational Objectives• Enhance Police Surveillance Capabilities
• Provide “on-the-ground” mobile surveillance for protest marches
• Capture and record high-quality video for later analysis
• Allow “on-the-ground” officers access to live video-streams
Operational Challenges• Off the shelf technology
• Do not integrate or interfere with policing operation around conference
• Tight-timescale –
First site survey August 15th, Operational “go-live” September 17th

Bournemouth vs. Leeds Football Match
Stats• Previous match resulted in severe vandalism & damage to Bournemouth city centre• First time they have played since this incident• Large scale operation run by Dorset Police
Operational Objectives• Provide video CCTV Surveillance at high-risk locations• Provide video surveillance “on-the-ground” around the stadium• Provide tracking of police officers• Capture video images and re-distribute information to police officer handsets
Operational Challenges• Re-deployment of equipment from Operation Pegasus• Low light conditions require Infa-red video around stadium• Integration with Airwave Dimetra network• Tight timescale –
De-commission Operation Pegasus October 5th, Re-deploy for Operation BvsL “go-live” November 3rd
