Facility requirements

SelfCheck wired networking requirementsThe SelfCheck supports the 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T Ethernet protocols and requires the following computer connectionsand cabling:

• Computer connection: PCI slot

• Cabling: RJ-45

SelfCheck wireless networking requirementsThe wireless network adapter implements the IEEE 802.11(g) and 802.11(b) wireless protocols and requires a PCI slot whenpre-installed and USB port when installed after the system itself is installed.

Security Network security–wired and wireless–is the responsibility of the library, the library’s ITdepartment, or contracted IT personnel. Security measures include, but are not limited to, thefollowing:

• Separation from the library’s public wireless network and SSID transmission suppression, sothe access point is not readily visible or likely to be used or connected to by library patrons.

• Either WPA encryption or WEP encryption, with encryption key rotation and/or MAC addressfiltering.

• If financial transactions are implemented using credit or debit cards, the customer must conformto Payment Card Industry (PCI) data security standards (DSS) developed by the PCI StandardsCouncil. Requirements can be found at http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/.

Access Point The wireless network adapter is currently supported for use with the Cisco Aironet 1200 Seriesaccess point, with the possibility of others to be determined.

Signal Strength The SelfCheck System must be located within optimal operational range of the wireless accesspoint, as determined by access point signal strength, which can be analyzed and measured usingsoftware that is installed with the wireless network adapter.

• Transmitted signal strength from the wireless access point must be greater than –27dBm asmeasured at the installed location of the SelfCheck System.

• Software RSSI (received signal strength indicator) must show greater than 90% signal strength(all five bars of RSSI are green) at the installed location of the SelfCheck System.

Guidelines The following can help ensure the required signal strength at the location where the SelfCheckSystem is installed.

• Install the SelfCheck System within twenty feet (20 ft. [6 m]) of the wireless access point.

• Install the SelfCheck System in line-of-sight of the wireless access point, with minimal orno metal objects between the SelfCheck System and the wireless access point, to reduceradio-frequency interference or multi-path distortion effects.

Specifications and dimensions

Basic dimensions and materialsCounter areaThe countertop should be deep enough to install the monitor mount and RFID reader pad and wide enough to set librarymaterials on either side of the reader pad.

Minimum dimensions: 27 in. × 44 in. (68.6 cm × 111.8 cm)

Interior dimensionsThe interior of the furniture where the SelfCheck system equipment is stored must have room enough to house the computer, interconnect box, and appliance coupler. In addition, we recommend that the furniture have storage space for the computerkeyboard and mouse.

Minimum volume: 8 in. x 21 in. x 21 in. (20.3 cm x 53.3 cm x 53.3 cm)

VentilationThe computer, interconnect box, and other equipment must have sufficient airflow to keep them below their maximumoperating temperatures (93° F / 34° C). For passive ventilation, ventilation cutouts should be evenly divided between the topand bottom of the equipment space.

Minimum area of ventilation cutouts (total): 80 square inches (511 square centimeters).

AccessibilityThe installation technician must have access to the interior of the furniture from the back, including the space immediatelybelow the countertop. If the furniture is closed in back, the back panel must be removable. Better still are access doors, whichcan be locked but also provide easy access for technicians.

RFID reader pad accessThe RFID reader pad can be mounted on the underside of the counter or placed on top of it. If you choose to have the readerpad mounted under the counter, you must provide sufficient working space below the counter for the technician to install thepad and RF limiter plate. The pad mounting area must be accessible from the rear and/or front of the furniture.

Minimum working volume: 18 in. × 18 in. × 18 in. (46 cm × 46 cm ×46 cm).

RFID reader pad placement optionsThe RFID reader pad can be placed on top of the counter or mounted to the underside of the counter. 3M recommends thelatter option, because it protects the pad from accidents and vandalism. The option you choose determines which holes mustbe drilled. For dimensions, see Counter layout on page 15.

• Top mount. Drill a through hole (C) for the reader pad cable. Do not drill the pad mounting holes (D) or the RF limiterplate holes (E). Do not recess area B. Do recess area A if the countertop thickness is greater than 2.0 inches (5.08 cm)

• Bottom mount. Do not drill hole C. On the underside, drill four mounting holes for the reader pad (D) and 10 holes for theRF limiter plate (E). In a wood or composite countertop, drill wood-screw pilot holes. In a hard material such as slateor granite, drill holes for plastic screw anchors. For dimensions, see notes D and E. If the countertop is more than 2.0inches (5.08 cm) thick, recess areas A and B on the underside to a maximum thickness of 2.0 inches (5.08 cm). Werecommend that you inlay a contrasting material on the top surface to indicate the RFID detection area. You can usethe dimensions for area B.

Counter thicknessIf the RFID reader pad is mounted on the underside of the counter, a countertop that is more than 2.0 inches (5.08 cm) thickwill reduce the number of items that can be read at one time. A countertop that exceeds this thickness should be recessed onthe underside where the reader pad will be mounted (area B).

Specifications and dimensions

If the countertop is more than 2.0 inches (5.08 cm) thick, the underside of the countertop where the monitor support column ismounted must be recessed (area A).

Thickness after recessing: 0.75 in. to 2.0 in. (1.9 cm to 5.1 cm).

Counter materialsMetal and other conductive materials can interfere with the operation of the RFID reader pad.

Recommended: Wood, stone, most laminates and plastics.

Not recommended: Metal, laminates with metallic flecks, any material containing large amounts of carbon.

StabilityThe furniture must meet Underwriters Laboratories Inc. standards for stability. For custom installations, customer shall insurethat minimum standards for stability are complied with per UL standard 60950 (for North America), IEC 60950 (for countriesoutside Europe), or EN60950 (for Europe).

Counter layoutAll mounting and access holes must be drilled in the countertop and cabinet before the 3M technician is called to install theSelfCheck system. On stone countertops, plastic screw anchors must be inserted in the RFID reader pad and RF limiter platemounting holes. If the reader pad is to be mounted on the underside of the counter, it may be necessary to reduce the thicknessof the countertop on the underside where the reader pad and the monitor support column will be mounted. If the furnitureis being specially built for the SelfCheck system, it may be possible to do this work before the furniture is assembled. Fordimensions, see Figure 1 Countertop dimensions on page 16.

The printer may be placed anywhere within the reach of its cables, which connect to the interconnect box and the computer. However, for ergonomic reasons 3M strongly recommends that you place the front edge of the printer cutout as close aspossible to 12.6 inches (32.0 cm) from the front edge of the countertop. The printer may be either recessed or placed on thecountertop. If it is recessed, a support shelf for the printer must be placed 6.1 inches ± .062 inches (15.5 cm ± .157 cm) belowthe top surface of the countertop.

The following figure shows the required cable hole sizes and the recommended locations of the holes relative to outlines of thedevices. Outlines of the base of the monitor support and the reader pad recess are provided for reference.

Specifications and dimensions

Component layoutIn designing or modifying furniture for the SelfCheck system, note that there are certain restrictions on how and where theinternal components can be placed.

ComputerThe computer does not require any mounting holes. It may be placed on a shelf. It may be placed flat or stood verticallyon a custom stand. Though there is no preferred orientation, it should be placed so the connectors and the CD-RW drive, which are on opposite sides, are both accessible.

Interconnect boxThe interconnect box contains the RF reader electronics, a 12 VDC power supply for the monitor, and a 24 VDC powersupply for the printer and barcode scanner. It can be laid flat or screwed to a side panel or wall. It should be placed so theconnectors are accessible.

RFID reader padThe RFID reader pad can be placed on top of the counter or mounted to the underside. The latter location is preferred, because it protects the pad and its cable from accidents and vandalism. Do not place any component, or store the mouse andkeyboard, closer than 3 inches (7.6 cm) to the reader pad.

Specifications and dimensions

RF limiter plateThe RF limiter plate is used to limit the read range of the RFID reader pad to the sides. This helps prevent item RFIDtags from being read when the items are not located on the RFID reader pad. For dimensions, see Figure 2 RF limiterplate dimensions (bottom view) on page 17.

Appliance couplerThe appliance coupler shown below is a 5–connector power strip with an integrated on/off switch for turning the equipment onand off. The appliance coupler can be mounted to a rear or side panel of the furniture with screws, or can be laid flat on thefloor of the desk or counter without mounting. It should be placed so the connectors are accessible.

Figure 10 Appliance coupler

Maximum spacing of componentsThe maximum spacing of the components from each other is limited by the cable lengths, which are approximately 5 feet(1.5 m). Please note that several cables must be fed through the touch screen monitor support column. The length of thesecables inside the furniture is approximately 3 feet (1 m).

Multiple installationsFor best ergonomics, when multiple SelfCheck systems are installed in a single countertop, they should be spaced a minimumof 44 inches (111.8 cm) apart on centers. (To avoid the detection and checkout of books at adjacent SelfCheck systems,3M strongly recommends installing the RF limiter plate.)
