Welcome to our Term Four, 2011 Newsletter. It has been a particularly rewarding term (and year) for our school. As you read this newsletter I will be representing our school, the South Western Sydney Region and NSW Department of Education and Communities at the

United Nations High Commission for Refugees, (Department of Immigration) Ministerial Level Conference in Geneva Switzerland. Our local Federal Member of Parliament, Mr. Chris Bowen, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship has invited me to accompany him to this conference. Our school has been asked to profile the development of our Parent Café. This initiative, which began in 2010, has been supported in 2011 with our Community Liaison Officer, Mr. Haitham Jaju, who is part of our National Partnerships Team. The Parent Café began as a support to parents who had newly

arrived students in the Intensive English Centre. It is now operating in the mainstream high school as well and has been introduced into four other schools in our region. Profiling this as a successful program helping newly arrived students and their families into Australia is a great honour for our school. Mr. Bowen has also requested that I take a student with me to speak about the school. Ameer Saeed will be presenting his story at the Conference. He is an excellent example of the quality of our students at Fairfield High School Ameer‘s brother, Daniel, will also be presenting at the conference. We look forward to speaking to United Nations officials about our school. Our school will be profiled, as a global example of the excellent work being done with the students, parents and community of Fairfield.

This newsletter highlights the end of another era in school history. Our Deputy Principal, Mrs. Duncan and our Head Teacher Performing Arts, Mrs. Chyra are both retiring at the end of the year. I thank them for their contribution to our school and the successes they have achieved with our students. We wish them well in their retirement.

Mr. C. Bowen

There have been some outstanding student successes this term. Nazli Ada of Year 8 was awarded a special award for Tai Quan Do. Atunaisa Lasalosi, Year 11, was selected by our region as part of the Talent Identification Program and performed at our Regional ―Director‘s Choice‖ celebration. Lana Tarek was selected to be part of the Board of Studies ―On Stage‖ performance group which will perform in February, 2012. Glena Travis and Mary Habib were successful in a recent Design an Ad. competition run by the Champion Newspaper. They both won vouchers from Stockland, Wetherill Park and were featured in the newspaper. These exciting successes in various areas of the life of our school show the range of abilities of our students. Out National Partnerships team continues to work with our students, teachers and community. Our partnership with The University of Sydney and the Compass Program has linked many students and parents with the various faculties of the school and The University. A special celebration ceremony on Sunday, 27 November 2011 at The University of Sydney celebrated our work together. Fairfield High School parents and students were featured in the displays. Congratulations in particular to Ms. Sayed-Rich and Mr. Jaju for their work with the Compass Program. The 50 parents who attended on the day enjoyed all the displays. Our National Partnerships team is also involved in planning for 2012. In particular, we are working with Fairfield Public School to become part of their Focus on Reading program. Fairfield Public School has introduced this program and 80 of our teachers have been to Fairfield Public School to learn more about the program. We look forward to a close link developing in 2012. New DELL Smart Data projectors have been installed in a number of areas of our school. Each faculty will now have use of a number of these and 2012 looks to being an exciting year for new forms of teaching across the school.

Our Auditorium has been wired with the new Digital Education Revolution network routers and this now enables more teachers and students to be able to access the internet during special tutorials and teacher training. During my absence during Term Three, Mr. Mark Sargeant was relieving Principal. He will again be relieving Principal during my trip to Geneva. I would like to thank him for his leadership of our school in my absences. He has great knowledge of Departmental policies and has worked tirelessly in my absence. We await our HSC results towards the end of Term Four. Our Year 12 students have worked hard this year with the support of their teachers, Faculty Head Teachers and the National Partnership team who are located near the new Senior Student Study Centre. Our Work Skills HSC students have continued to work in areas across our school. With the help of Mr. McDonald they have been installing a water tank to feed a water feature outside H Block. Combined with the Hairdressing, Floristry, Nails and Beauty, Small Motor Maintenance and Bricklaying, there has been a wide range of skill-building by these students. We look forward to extra activities during 2012. I would like to thank the Trade Tutors who helped us this year and in particular, Mr. Warren Dunn and Mrs. Pam Dunn for their work in coordinating the Work Skills Program. I need to also acknowledge the work we have done with our business partner, Stockland. Their support of our school is invaluable in providing another perspective for our students – and assist in their skill development. Thank you for all your support in 2011. I wish all our students a relaxing school holiday break. Please read your reports closely and continue to look at how you can strive for better results to achieve the goals you have set for yourself. As well, remember Fairfield High School is a school that CAREs for students, teachers, parents and the wider community. I look forward to returning and continuing to lead a great school in a great community.

YEAR 7 - 2011

YEAR 7 REPORT WITH MR JACKSON

As quick as you can say ‗orientation day‘, this year seems to have passed us by. Without pausing for breath, 2011 seems to have rushed along with a life of its own and it is now the last term that Year 7 will be known as the smallest fishes in the pond. From Cross Country, to Athletics Carnivals, to Multicultural Day, Year 7 has participated with great enthusiasm. As ambassadors of Fairfield High when out on excursions, or visiting the Primary Schools, they have represented our school with pride. While going about their learning at school, they

have generally done it with energy and well focused behaviour that has resulted in an ever increasing amount of Merits, Special Awards and Bronze Awards being conferred on a large number of students in the year group. As the students have progressed throughout the year, they have been slowly preparing themselves for the rigours of Year 8 and are now more confident of how to deal with the pressures and challenges of high school study. In the coming year I look forward to hearing about the future achievements of 2012‘s Year 8!

YEAR 8 REPORT WITH Ms Lykourezos

This term is the final term before our Year 8‘s become amazing Year 9 students who will be sure to try to be the best they can in the near future. Let‘s go have a look at the wonderful achievements and curriculum activities that Year 8 have been a part of this term. Firstly our Year 8 girls had an exciting and unforgettable time in participating in the junior 7-8 cheerleading squad which was facilitated by Miss Maric on Tuesday and Thursday lunches. Unfortunately the team was stopped because of the fact that many students lacked confidence performing in front of the whole school. On a brighter note Year 8 blue and yellow were invited to an excursion to the University of Sydney campus open day October 27th. This was an experience students enjoyed and learnt many interesting and educational skills. There were various activities students could participate in such as Dentistry, Law and Order, Architecture and Singing! Thank you to all the teachers for your help and support and for giving us the chance to attend. There was also the opportunity to learn how to surf with Mrs Rosewell and Miss Hayes and the leadership and support of Cronulla surf school on the 24th of November. This is for the girls who were invited for all their hard work throughout the year. From the feedback we received from students this was very worthwhile, the students learnt a lot and had heaps of fun. From all of the girls that attended we would like to give a big thank you Mrs Rosewell and Miss Hayes. Throughout this year all of Year 8 has tried extremely hard to win points for the class

champion. Congratulations to the winning class 8 yellow. You have won yourself an amazing excursion to 7/10 split where students will get to enjoy laser skirmish or bowling with their peers and year advisor. Well done to all students for your cooperation and hard work throughout this year. On behalf of all Year 8 I would like to say a big thank you to Miss Lykourezos for all her fantastic effort and support to guide Year 8 and wish she would soon recover from her tragic accident as it led to a broken bone. She has been there for us and has always been able to help us through troubled times. She has been a valuable role model for all students in Fairfield High School. She has also organised many interesting videos about cyber bulling and one of the most recent informational videos was called ―tagged‖. The documentary impacted many students who have thought about what they post on social media sites. A big thanks to Miss Lykourezos. Congratulations to all the students, we hope you have a very memorable and relaxing break these holidays. Keep safe. Sarah Stokes and Year 8 Advisor.

YEAR 9 REPORT WITH MR SINGH Congratulations Year 9 for successfully completing the year. This year‘s schooling had been very busy and full of excitement. As you will be moving to Year 10 next year, there will be more exciting educational challenges facing you. Year 9 was a year to be self-motivated and a chance for you to work as independent learners. Being more independent and self-motivated will enhance you to achieve outstanding results in the near future. The Year 9 group along with their teachers have achieved a great deal of knowledge that would aid their following year of studies. This year, the year group had truly excelled in many various things such as Fairfield‘s sports pride, Sebastian Acosta. He had made a great achievement in sporting activities such as participating for high jump at the Nationals level in the whole of NSW. Throughout the year, many students have spent their own time in helping the school community. For example, doing Library monitoring, SRC and POW. Students were also involved in other different programs organised throughout the year such as:

Cross country carnival School Athletics carnival GOALS Art Exhibit 100 Faces, 100 Stories

Best Buddies A handful of our year group students assisted in various fund raising events such as:

Jeans for Genes day Maroon day

Red and Green day for KMART Christmas tree White Ribbon Day

RSPCA Cupcake day Protect Our Toilets

Due to the successful year, I am glad to propose the year nine end of year excursion to Jamberoo on the 8th of December 2011. This is also a reward for the hard work students have put into their school work. They are highly commended for their academic studies. You have made your year group proud. Also, I would like to thank Ms Stanislawczyk, assistant Year 9 Adviser who has helped me throughout the year with various activities such as organising GOALS excursions and many more. I would also like to thank the Year 9 Deputy Principal, Ms Duncan for assisting the smooth running and in general –welfare of all our students throughout the year, you will be missed, enjoy your retirement.

YEAR 10 REPORT WITH MR HONYAK

As the year comes to a close, I‘d like to thank all teachers who have been involved with Year 10 in their preparation for the School Certficate. Year 11 is just around the corner and I‘d like to wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas holiday. Make sure you get lots of rest and have are well prepared for the vigours of Year11 and 12. A different mind set is required for Year11 so it‘s important to reassess what you want and where you are going. We‘ve had a jammed pack year with events in and out of the school. Thank you to all those students who have participated within the school and the outside community. Thank you to all the POW students involved with Earth Hour, and the Fred Hollows Foundation. SRC : Jeans for Jeans day, Water Day and the Chess Champions.

Recently I took the students involved with the UTS University Summer School to their orientation day. Students were shown around the University and given a briefing on what their courses would involve a one week program in January where students will partake in Nursing, Science, Robots and Engineering. It‘s with much regret that Ms Molina is leaving the Assitant Year 10 Advisors position. Ms Molina has done so much work behind the scenes for all the Year 10‘s and helped me to help you guys. She is taking up the Year7 Advisors position for 2012. Happy Holidays! Mr Honyak and Ms Molina

Ameer will accompany Mr Mulas and the Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen, among other dignitaries, to the meeting at the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva in early December. He will make a presentation to the assembly about his experiences as a refugee and the many programs he has been involved in at Fairfield High School to support his

education. He is an outstanding representative for Year 11 and Fairfield High School. Mr Haythornewaite Year 11 Advisor

SRC STUDENT OF TERM FOUR

Brandon Lam The SRC student of the term is Brandon Lam in Year 8. Brandon has only been in the SRC this year but he has been a fantastic addition to the team. He is a quiet achiever, not one to get up on assemblies, but always involved in our activities and putting his hand up to help. He is always the first one to arrive and stays to get the job done. Brandon is moving out of SRC next year and he will be missed. Ms Tyler SRC Coordinator

ATHLETE STUDENT OF TERM FOUR

Sebastian Acosta-Vazquez

Raising the bar Fairfield High School student Sebastian Acosta-Vazquez didn't know quite how high he would have to jump to win the high jump event at the recent NSW All School titles. All the 14-year-old knew was he needed to beat his personal best. And so he did by 8 centimetres. He jumped 1.83 metres — enough to be crowned NSW under-14 all-school champion. Not bad for someone who had only had two high jump lessons. "I was really happy, I couldn't believe I won," said Acosta-Vazquez, who has now qualified for the Nationals in Brisbane later this year. "I love jumping and the fact I know I am jumping over my own height is pretty amazing." The Smithfield Little Athletics star said he hoped to set the bar at 1.90 metres in the new year as well as beating his personal best in the 100 metre sprint of 11.6 seconds.

Sebastion has been a credit to his school this year. His dedication to his training is to be commended. Mr Johnson Head Teacher PDHPE

BASKETBALL STUDENTS OF TERM FOUR

Belmin Redzepagic, Quintyn Aloese, James Barbar, Vincent Au & Jesse Gomez

I would like to commend and congratulate these five boys for their commitment and support over the last term with the running of the lunch basketball competition. These boys along with three other students completed their beginner basketball referee‘s course. They have come along every lunchtime since and either scored or referred the games, making my job so much easier. Refereeing is not an easy job as players do not always agree with calls made against them. This group of young men also help to carry the equipment to and from the gym both for games and training sessions. Thank you boys Ms Hudson – Coach

We are losing two greatly respected long term staff members this term who have worked tirelessly for Fairfield High School over the years. Unfortunately for our school but well earned by them both Mrs Duncan and Mrs Chyra are retiring to begin a new phase of their lives.

Mrs Duncan began her teaching career in 1980 at Hoxton Park High before coming to Fairfield High on 10th May 1994 as the Head Teacher of Social Science, then in 2004 becoming Deputy Principal. Mrs Duncan is an

excellent administrator and has played an integral part in the organisation of Multicultural Days, Formal assemblies, IEP Program, Faculty reviews, Mentoring programs with Stocklands, Work Skills and the Trade Training Centre, just to mention a few things. She has an abundance of energy and drive, always willing to help both staff and students. Her rapport with her students motivates them to achieve and aspire to their maximum potential. Mrs Duncan has always enjoyed teaching and will miss being around the students in particular. James Barber made the following farewell speech to Mrs Duncan on behalf of Year 9. His words say it all. Good morning teachers and fellow students. My name is James and I would like to deliver a thank you and a congratulatory speech to thank Ms Duncan for all her hard work and effort with our year.

I am more than honoured and delighted to stand here today on behalf of Year 9 to say a few words which summarise our feelings, thoughts and wishes for Ms Duncan. I would like to thank you, Ms Duncan for being our Deputy Principal for our year. You have been with us through our ups and downs, and you have still stood strong. I know you might have had a hard time with some of us, but we are learning from our mistakes. You were an amazing Deputy Principal and we will miss you so much. We appreciate everything you have done for us, you were not just a Deputy Principal for us, but you were our friend. You‘re so understanding, caring and would do anything to make your students happy. Thank you for organising all the special programs like GOALS. You have supported us throughout this entire journey through high school and we are grateful, to express our gratitude. A poem has been written by Natasa to thank you. Mrs Duncan Your educational wisdom knows no end, Unique is your ability to ignite learning.

You have been a mentor and a friend, You kept the candle of hope burning.

You were a Deputy Principal full of dedication, You were a role model to your students .

You filled your students with inspiration, So much accomplished in your time.

You answered the call of education, For you such appreciation and compassion.

Successful students your creation, The desire to educate your passion.

I hope you enjoy your retirement, and you come visit us after you leave. And don‘t forget us, your Year 9 group, because I know we won‘t forget you! Please put your hands together for Mrs Duncan.

Mrs Chyra began her teaching career at Blacktown Girls High in 1979 before moving to Fairfield Girls High in 1980. In 1981 Fairfield Girls High combined with Fairfield Boys High to become what we now known as Fairfield High with

the first Principal of the combined high school being Mr Peter Meehan. In 2001 Mrs Chyra became Head Teacher of Performing Arts at Fairfield High. During Mrs Chyra‘s time at the school there have been seven principals, four fires, to many changes in staff to mention them all she has seen many friends move on some into their own retirement others to new challenges. She has seen the demographics of the school change dramatically when the two schools amalgamated. Mrs Chyra said she has always loved teaching, what she enjoyed most has been having kids audition for performances such as Enchore, Featured Guest Artists for school Spectacular,

Regional Talented identification program, State Talent Development Program, these are just a few. In 1996 Mrs Chyra had a group of students (the only ones) to perform at the state principals conference at the Fairmont Resort, she was also the driving force behind students from our school performing at the opening of the Stocklands pre-school in the city. Mrs Chyra has also had students enter into the Holroyd Festival and Fairfield Idol winning in both of these competitions. In 1983 Fairfield High had the largest stage band with 72 students involved. Mrs Chyra said that the staff and students have been terrific with the school being her home away from home. In her retirement she is looking forward to a rest and most importantly a lot of quality time with her family as well as doing some travel. Mrs Chyra has been an inspiration to hundreds of students over the years many finding a love of music in her classroom, she has brought out the best in many. Thank you to two dedicated, inspirational teachers who have motivated many students to achieve their full potential over their long stella careers. There will be many students who look back at their time at Fairfield High in years to come and realise the impact these two teachers had on them. You will both be greatly missed leaving a void that will be difficult to fill. Enjoy a well earned rest.

In 1981, my old high school ceased to exist. I attended Fairfield Boys‘ High School (FBHS) during the 1960‘s. Back then, on the present campus where Fairfield High School is situated, there were twin high schools, Fairfield Boys‘ High School and Fairfield Girls‘ High School. Both high schools were separated by an invisible line. The only facilities we shared were the school hall, the playing fields, and a gym (situated next to the left hand side of the hall) that is no longer there. The student population of FBHS was about 700. A similar number of students attended Fairfield Girl‘s High School. It was forbidden for students from both high schools to mix with each other while on schools‘ property. Productions of annual operas/musicals, etc, were the only times that the boys and girls mixed. The traffic flow along The Horsley Drive was not as busy as it is today. Access to the entrance of the twin high schools was via a pedestrian crossing that was controlled by traffic lights. My recollections were that, on a daily basis, we had eight, 30 minute periods of subject lessons. Three periods then a recess break,

which was followed by two more periods, then a lunch break and another three periods of lessons. FBHS uniforms were; long grey trousers, blue shirts, black leather shoes, and a red tie. In winter, we wore a red blazer. A grey jumper was optional. The cane was considered to be option and normal practice for students to receive for misbehaving. The cane was administered by teachers with offending students holding the arm out-stretched beside them and parallel to the ground, with the palms of their hands facing upwards. The fingers were always the area where the downward stroke of the cane would make contact. Offending students could receive one to six strokes of the cane. I can remember getting four of the best from my History Master. During my Years at Fairfield Boys‘ High school, I was a member of the cadet unit. Tuesday afternoons, after school until about 5pm was taken up with various school cadet activities. We had a store room at FBHS, which was known as the quartermaster‘s store. Only one padlock secured the room. Inside the quartermaster‘s store were approximately 130, .303 rifles, all in working order. Other cadet unit equipment including two light machine (bren) guns. A medium machine gun, was also stored in the room. Back in those days, there were hardly any school break-ins. My five years in the cadet unit was spent playing in the cadet bugle and drum band. The band would lead the FBHS cadet unit in various public events, such as the Smithfield Anzac day march in the morning and then later that day at the Fairfield Anzac day march. During my last year at FBHS, I was promoted to the rank of drum-major.

Every year, our band competed with other Sydney high school cadet unit bands in the Sydney Waratah Spring Festival band competition. In two consecutive years FBHS cadet unit band beat 12 other cadet bands to win first place in the B grade band competition. The band competition was held in the Sydney Botanical Gardens, before the commencement of the Waratah Spring Festival parade. Competition between the numerous high schools was of an extremely high standard, and winning the band competition two years running, was an outstanding achievement for FBHS. Wednesday afternoons were our sports days, and every student was expected to be involved in some sort of sport, from ten pin bowling, squash, swimming, etc, to, inter-school sporting teams that included; soccer, rugby union, hockey, basketball, cricket, etc. Two significant things happened that affected the world while I was a student at FBHS. On the morning of 22nd November, 1963, when I had arrived at school, the word was spreading that John F. Kennedy, the thirty fifth president of the United States had been assassinated. The other historical event that occurred and lasted for thirteen years was the Vietnam War. The war commenced in 1962. Australia started to send armed forces in 1965. In 1964, National Service was introduced, and it was compulsory for twenty-year-old men to register for National Service and serve two years in Australia‘s military forces.

I left FBHS in 1966. Some very popular songs during 1966 were; ―Friday on My Mind‖ (The Easybeats), ―We Can Work It Out‖ (The Beatles), ―Barbara Ann‖ (The Beach Boys), ―Shakin‘ All Over‖ (Normie Rowe). When I lived in Fairfield, there were no major shopping centres, malls, etc. We had one picture theatre that was situated in The Crescent. In the late 1960‘s, I was actively involved in the formation of the Fairfield Boys‘ and Fairfield Girls‘ High Schools Ex-Students‘ Union. There was a combined membership of approximately 40 ex-students from both high schools. We organised and participated in many activities and functions. Our friendships and memories have continued for 40 plus years. From 1973 until the end of 1975, I was commissioned a First Lieutenant, Officer of Cadets, attached to Fairfield Boys‘ High and Liverpool Boys‘ High Schools. I instructed the FBHS cadet band in playing musical instruments and marching drill. Although our twin high schools no longer exist, Fairfield Boys‘ and Fairfield Girls‘ High Schools Ex-Students‘ Union is very honoured to be associated with Fairfield High School. Vince Vernick OAM

I was a student at Fairfield Boys High School from 1962 to 1967 - the first guinea pigs of the new Wyndham Scheme. I was born and educated in Fairfield, and from there I gained a Commonwealth Scholarship to study Electrical Engineering at Sydney University. Eventually I became a TAFE Head Teacher of Electrical Engineering at North Sydney TAFE college, and was awarded the Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2000. I attribute this to my grounding at the school by dedicated teachers - such as Mr Jack Sharkey, a World War II Spitfire pilot. Many students before and after me have similar encouraging stories of hard work and ultimate success in their life. My contempories at Fairfield Boys High School were mainly of Anglo and European descent. We worked hard and proudly represented our school both academically and in sport. We were drilled about acceptable standards and behaviour, and were justifiably disciplined (caned) when we fell out of line. We wore our uniform with great pride - often bought at the school "second hand shop". (See attached school photo.)

To this day, we remain a close-knit group, and the values and education we received over 40 years ago still remain with us. The mix of nationalities has clearly changed since our days at the school, but the importance of the school as a central point in the local community is clear. I visited the school recently with another ex-student (who by the way holds the Order of Australia), and we were pleased to see initiatives such as the vegetable gardens and the cafe / kitchen area where parents, staff and students are able to mix and interact. The school museum also records examples of our humble but proud past. The courtesy and attention afforded to us on this visit was typical of the caring nature of the school as a whole. As a former teacher myself, I felt the passion of the Principal and his staff in this melting pot of cultures. It has always been thus at Fairfield High School. In our day, the school motto was "To wider horizons", and although this has now changed, it certainly still applies. Chris Zvirblis

On Tuesday, October 18th, the students from Fairfield High School involved in the Best Buddies program travelled to the "Field of Dreams" in Panania to participate in a softball competition against Fairvale High School and Sir Joseph Banks. Buddy pairs participated in their teams together to learn the game and provide encouragement for each other. Three softball matches were played in the sun before lunch was served. Students took advantage of this opportunity to spend time with their buddy as well as meet new buddy pairs from other schools. The director of Best Buddies attended the later half of the day to present trophies and encourage buddy pairs.

Fairfield High School Best Buddies were proud to collect their "first place" trophy and present it to Mr Grech upon their return to school. FAIRFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

WELFARE REPORT

On the Wednesday the 23rd of November, Fairfield High School joined forces with Community First Step, Cabramatta Youth Team and the Fairfield City Council to promote awareness for violence against Women.

White Ribbon is an organisation that is working to prevent the most common and pervasive form of male violence – that towards women. All forms of violence are unacceptable. White Ribbon believes the prevention of violence against women will change society for the better. White Ribbon believes in the capacity of the individual to change and to encourage change in others. It believes that our generation can and must work towards stopping violence against women. Through primary prevention initiatives and an annual campaign, White Ribbon works to change the attitudes and behaviours that lead to men's violence against women. How Does White Ribbon Work? White Ribbon, as part of the White Ribbon Campaign, invites men to make a difference by swearing an Oath never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. This Oath is not just a 'feel good' statement. It is an active commitment which promotes positive attitudes and behaviours towards women and drives signatories to, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, 'be the change you want to see in the world'. When the White Ribbon Campaign culminates each year on 25 November men and women across Australia are encouraged to wear a white ribbon as a symbol of this Oath. By swearing the Oath and wearing a white ribbon these men and women are openly showing their commitment to challenging and changing the attitudes and behaviours which contribute to violence against women. White Ribbon in Australia is led by thousands of male Ambassadors who, through living the White Ribbon Oath, act as positive role models in their communities. These men have taken up the challenge to help bring about attitudinal and behavioural change, both individually and collectively. Despite the weather on the day, the students of Fairfield High enjoyed the free BBQ and we signed over 300 Oaths which will be sent to the White Ribbon Foundation. Thankyou to all who participated and helped out on the day.

In partnership with Fairfield Public School Fairfield Public School (FPS) in partnership with Fairfield High School (FHS) have been long term partners in leading learning and serving the Fairfield community. As neighbours in education, we are continuing to build upon our educational partnership. This year has seen the introduction of several innovative initiatives under the thrust of National Partnerships. Throughout 2011, FPS introduced Focus on Reading (For) into all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. When implemented, FoR provides scaffolding to improve students ability to decode, gather information, analyse and infer written and visual texts. The program aims to develop students to become more independent and critical learners.

During Terms 3 & 4 more than 80 teaching staff from FHS participated in classrooms visits at FPS. Teachers from both schools engaged in professional discussions about FoR and its implementation at the secondary level. Based on this consultation, FHS will be looking at a new direction for Year 7 in 2012. Classes will be led by teachers trained in FoR who will continue to implement teaching and learning strategies used in the primary context. This will support the transition of students from Year 6 to 7 and provide cohesion in learning as students enter a new stage of education.

Other transitional initiatives include „A Taste of High School‟ and „Thinking Ahead‟ days: On Thursday 20th October approximately 70 Year 6 students from FPS came across to bridge and were exposed to a taste of high school. They spent the day in various venues throughout the school, viewed performances by our fantastic musicians and participated in taster lessons in woodwork, jewellery making and screen printing. The students had a fantastic day and stated they look forward to starting Year 7 next year.

Thinking ahead day We look forward to our ongoing partnership with FPS as we continue our National Partnerships journey hand in hand. Amanda Conray Head Teacher National Partnerships, National Partnerships Team Inter-school Debating/Public Speaking Debaters and Public Speakers at Fairfield High School have been busy in the second semester

this year. All 5 teams, from Year 7 through to 11 have completed 3 rounds of the Premier‘s Public Speaking Competition. Year 8 with Christina Carol, Deveena Kumar, Amy Tran and Tara Rowley, won all 3 debates. Unfortunately, they were narrowly defeated at inter-regional debating level.

The Year 7 debating students: Jovana Alavanja, Kyra Donnelly, Clodia Kifarkis, Max Sali Pour, Dianne Sengmany are to be commended for the great arguments they put forward. Taking part in your first high school debate on foreign territory is extremely daunting. In the Public Speaking arena Prairiewood HS

(regional winner who defeated our Year 10 student, Jade Coulton) went through to the top, taking out the state title in the SMH Plain English Speaking Competition. Two Year 8 students – Deveena Kumar & Isabella Kim were both convincing candidates in the Junior competition run by Legacy. Fairfield High school hosted this competition early in the term. We wish the Year 8 debating team all the best in future competitions.

Prioritising Grammar

Seven teachers from various faculties completed after school Prioritising Grammar Workshops. This course is designed to assist teachers to teach grammar in an engaging manner with a focus on making the instruction meaningful to the course content.

Staff enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the training via video conference link in the comfort of H Block. The connected classroom has proved a wonderful tool in teaching students and staff alike.

SmartArtz Workshop - Year 9 Dance group in Term 3 and 7 Blue in Term 4. For those of you wondering how to pronounce it the above company is pronounced SMART

ARTS. We have been targeted as a school that would benefit from participating in a variety of theatrical workshops. This has allowed the students to be involved in whole day workshops at no cost, where outside performers have come to the school & assisted the students in writing, editing, auditioning for, performing in & ultimately filming their own script. Once again year 9 Dance students have been fortunate enough to be involved in this workshop: they are a highly disciplined group of students in this arena. Ms Lykourezos, our enthusiastic Dance & Drama teacher, has been on hand to give the students encouragement & guidance throughout these sessions. In Term 4, 7 Blue were fortunate enough to be involved in a Smart Artz workshop. Once again Murray & Katie put the students through a series of ice breaking drama activities. The students composed a script exploring the inclusivity of community members who have autism. We talked about the program of Best Buddies that our school runs and how much both partners in the relationship benefit from bond. 7 Blue decided to set their seven scene

play within a karate class and we saw some excellent moves on the day on the part of the…girls.

NAPLAN Results for Years 7 and 9 In September National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results were released to schools across Australia. Every student in Years 7 and 9 received an envelope to take home to parents explaining their results and comparing the ranking bands on a school and state level. As these tests were conducted in May across the nation, your child needed to be enrolled in an Australian school at this time in order to have sat for the series of tests, held over three days. Students who achieved outstanding growth and the highest rank within the areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy will be recognised at the final Presentation Day Awards. These students are to be congratulated for achieving at this high level. Currently, Mrs Weber Head Teacher Teaching and Learning, is interviewing students regarding their progress, based upon the results of this external testing. If any parent requires further information regarding the NAPLAN testing process or assistance in understanding results, please contact Mrs Weber during school hours.

If you haven‘t visited the school website lately, please do! Many more of the teaching faculties in the school have now built faculty pages, bursting with information for students and parents. Subject information is available, descriptions of courses, advertisements of approaching events, plus important information all makes for informative reading. School excursion pictures are often posted on the home page in the ‗albums‘, plus new alerts about school projects and the school newsletter is also available. Two important new pages are on our school website. The first is a link to our new Parent Website. The second is our new Alumni. The Parent Website is still under construction, however, if you click the click to visit the site, you will see some of our parent‘s ideas for the site. Some of the pages on the site are ‗Frequently Asked Questions‘, ‗Photo Albums of parent activities in the school, and ‗Sharing your family or culture‘s favourite recipe‘. Should you wish to join the parent website administration team, please ring the school and ask to speak to Ms Hannigan, or send your contact details to me via your student. Web building skills, clear English speaking and/or digital camera experience are all NOT REQUIRED! The parents on the administration team are learning as they go, so please feel free to join the team. Fairfield High School is forming an Alumni. An Alumni is any graduate or former student of a specific school, college, or university. Fairfield High School has enjoyed an extensive relationship with prior students for some time with many varied activities, special guest speakers, fund raising and other events. To formalise this relationship, we are forming an Alumni which graduates or former students are invited to join. Our school first opened its door in 1954, originally as a boy‘s school. Fairfield Girls High School opened its doors nearby in 1955. Fairfield Boys High School and Fairfield Girls High School amalgamated in 1981 to form

Fairfield High School. In 2004, the school celebrated its 50th year anniversary with a Jubilee celebration held in August. More than 500 ex-students attended the day!

One of the highlights of the 50th Jubilee was the burying of a 2004 time capsule, and the digging up of the 1985 time capsule! The contents were shared with the students of the school at that time. The 2004 time capsule contains contributions from staff and students and is intended to be opened during the

Centenary Celebrations of Fairfield High School in the year 2054. Should you wish to join our Alumni, please contact Ms Hannigan or Ms Elmir at the school. With already such a long rich history, we are hoping our Alumni will represent the changing and vibrant Fairfield community. The picture below is a photograph from 1954, the first class of Fairfield High School!

AUTHORITY TO PUBLISH All students in the school, on enrolment filled out a ‗permission to publish‘ form, giving the school permission to publish photographs of school events, such as excursions, special guest speakers and/or special projects in the school publications such as the school newspaper or newsletter. With the advent of digital photography, video and web based publishing; the old ‗permission to publish‘ has been updated by the Department of Education and Community Services. All students were recently given the new ‗Authority to Publish‘ form (included overleaf). If you have not signed this form, please sign the form in the newsletter, and send back to the front office via the student as soon as possible. DER LAPTOPS We are in our third year of the Digital Education Revolution (DER), with now all of Year 11, 10 and 9 having received the DER laptops. Students need to be reminded that they must take great care of the laptop as many of the damaged laptops need to be paid for by the family, not the school. Very few things are covered by the warranty. The current year 11 students have been informed that the warranty on their DER laptops expired in October 2011. This means any issue requiring servicing, will cost the family approximately a flat fee of $250. The DER laptops have been provided free of charge to each student when they get into Year 9. Students are allowed to keep the laptop if they complete Year 12. If students leave school for the independent or private school system, or for work or training, they must return the laptop to the school. The primary purpose of the laptops is to assist with the students‘ educational learning. It is essential that all students bring their DER laptops to school fully charged every day. Parents are asked to support the school in this policy and to regularly check the work students‘ are doing on their laptops.

WOOLWORTH‟S „Earn and Learn‟ Fairfield High School participated in the recent Woolworth‘s ―Earn and Learn‘ community project. A big thank you to the community for supplying over 4000 points earned from shopping at Woolworths. The school has used the 4000 points to purchase valuable reading resources, intended for use with our new Year 7 students in 2012. Neeta City‘s Woolworth‘s manager was very supportive of our school during the project. A collection box for dockets was set up at their customer service centre, a beautiful box of fruit for staff (and possums) was gifted and the manager visited the school and addressed students about applying for work at Woolworths in the future. SCHOOL‟s SPECTACULAR Every year the Department of Education and Community Services celebrates the achievements of public education by showcasing outstanding student performances from primary and high schools around the state. This year, the theme for the School‘s Spectacular was ‗The World‘s Biggest Classroom‘. Schools were invited to participate by sending in a submission indicating how they would explore the concept of ‗Imagination‘ in their classroom. Recently, in the annual Fairfield High School art exhibition, Ms Goldsmith‘s Year 10 Visual Arts class set up an installation artwork. An installation is a 3 dimensional artwork, like a sculpture, but an installation is different because it often involves interaction and participation from audiences, and can use 4 dimensional forms (such as space, light and time). The installation was set up in a black curtained room, with beautiful wire sculptures suspended, surrounded by large charcoal drawings of the sculptures. Colourful digital images were projected onto the sculptures via a data projector.

The light caused aesthetic shadows from the sculptures up on the ceiling and walls of the black curtained room. An original soundscape was created using sound bites reminiscent of futuristic science fiction, technology and mechanical machinery. Ms Goldsmith was successful in her submission illustrating her Year 10‘s Visual Arts class‘ highly creative installation project. This installation will now be exhibited in the School‘s Spectacular at the Sydney

Entertainment Centre. Congratulations to a very talented teacher and a highly creative and collaborative team of Year 10 Visual Arts students. The video of the installation is available on the school website. Visit the tab: ‗Curriculum and Activities‘, then ‗Arts‘, then ‗Visual Arts Home Page‘, then follow the links to ‗Stage 5‘.

This term has been a fruitful one as we continue to address National Partnerships agendas with great partnerships developing to support student academic pathways and extended support provided by our external agencies in the preparation for exit pathway planning at the year 12 attainment level. Additional support is also provided to students from year 9-11 this term in order to develop links to work and to increase employment skills, apprenticeship and traineeship knowledge for students. Our parent engagement ICT sessions continue to focus each fortnight on DEC and school policy and procedures and is held in Y002 and the Parent Café program under the leadership of Mr Haitham Jaju –Community Liaison Officer continues to concentrate on a variety of activities with weekly meetings aimed at

increasing the knowledge of skills of parents to better support their families and children‘s‘ learning. The connection with support agencies presenting at the Parent Café has strengthened over the year with many important ones delivering valuable services and programs directly to our parent groups. I would like to welcome (Ms) Suzanne De Sousa Barbosa| Youth & Family Support Officer | Strengthening Families Unit from the Arab Council Australia to our school. Suzanna presented at the P&C e this term on Cyber Safety and has commenced an intensive program with parents on a wide range of modules covering adolescent and family health. All parents who attend the parent engagement sessions have now been issued with folders and are using these to build a comprehensive resource package for future reference and use.

The program was expanded in 2008 to include students from Year 9 through to 12, to target pupils before they reach academic crossroads such as decisions regarding continuing into senior school and subsequent subject choice that may impact on future career decisions. In 2009, the Fast Forward program expanded to include 22 High Schools as part of the UWS Schools Strategic Plan. Further expansion will see 42 High Schools participate in the program in 2011.Aims of the program-: To increase GWS school students‘ engagement in learning and the completion of Year 12

To develop students‘ confidence, knowledge, skills and educational attainment To enhance GWS students‘ awareness of post school education opportunities To promote the benefits of lifelong learning, vis-à-vis life opportunities, to students and their families To improve the participation of GWS students in higher education. This program aims to increase the higher education participation rates of students in the Greater West by enhancing students‘ knowledge, skills and educational attainment. The Fast Forward program gives students a greater preparedness for participation and success in higher education. This program is grounded in the growing body of research and evidence that indicates that non-traditional students can be assisted to consider tertiary education as an option if entrenched attitudes are moderated by a range of experiences. The Fast Forward program seeks to engage selected students from year 9 with UWS staff, students and resources and work with them through to year 12. Through interactive, fun and practical activities, students are given a positive experience and understanding of University life and other pathways to achieve their goals for the future. As part of the program, students are able to take part in a series of experiential learning opportunities relevant to their needs and stage of development. Those students choosing to study at UWS after completing their schooling are also assisted in their transition to University and given the opportunity to be role models to younger students in the program, further developing their leadership skills. Congratulations to the following students in year 8 and 9 who were nominated by teachers across the school to participate in the UWS Fast Forward Program in 2012 and beyond. Thank you to all of the parents who attended the parent meeting to launch the program on the 21st November, 2011 in the Learning Resource Centre.

SECOND HAND UNIFORM SHOP Do you know the school has a second hand uniform shop which the SRC runs? Second hand uniform is available to buy for $5 per item and also given to students without the ability to pay. We always need more items of uniform so if your child has grown out of their uniform, changing to the senior uniform or finished Year 12 please send in their old uniform to Ms Tyler or the front office. NSW POLICE AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS DAY On Sunday 6th November the SRC participated in the Police Open day at Fairfield High School. Our job was to meet and greet officers from many of the specialist units such as:

Air wing Rescue and bomb disposal

Dog squad Riot Squad Cultural diversity team

The open day went from 10am-3pm. We found out about the requirements of becoming a police officer. We met many senior constables and the head of the NSW Police Force. During the day we visited each specialist unit and did a variety of activities. There was a ‗crime scene‘ that we had to try to solve. There was also a ‗Missing persons‘ unit. We asked them a lot of questions- one was- Who has been missing for the longest time? The answer was a woman from 1852. It was sad to hear these stories. There was a fitness group where you had to push on a hand pressure measure- if you got over 30 you could use a gun when you are a police officer. Overall we had a fun day. On behalf of the SRC I would like to thank Senior Constable Clapham for supervising us and providing us with food and drink during the day. Julie Mose- Year 7 SRC

MUFTI-DAY PROVIDES CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR KIDS IN NEED This is the third year that the SRC have run a Mufti-day to collect money to support the Kmart Wishing Tree appeal. The theme of course was Christmas or green and red. It was great to see a number of students putting an effort into dressing up. Thank you to all the students and teachers who helped us to raise an amazing $922 which is the most we have raised for our Christmas mufti.. We really appreciate your willingness to give and your helpfulness in having your money ready to as you walk through the school gates. SRC students will use the money donated to buy Christmas presents for kids in need who are listed on the Kmart Fairfield Wishing tree.

―GOALS is a one-on-one mentoring partnership that aims to widen the life choices of students‖. The Growing Opportunities and Learning skills program hosted by the ABCN this year was a great aiding factor towards the mentees‘. It gives both the mentors and mentees the chance to expand and share their knowledge, learning and understanding of the working world. During the six sessions we were able to learn:

Building relationships and confidence Self-reliance

Determination Communication Social skills Resolving financial problems Goal setting Realising our strengths and weaknesses

How to engage with the interviewer in job interviews

Hone our skills Teamwork Leadership Public speaking

Through the one-on-one mentoring sessions the students were able to freely express their opinions to their mentors. Moreover, the students were able to confidently talk to their mentors about their current complications and how to set and achieve goals by:

Informative games Managing given situations Filling out the GOALS log books Attending various excursions in the city

organised by the Year Adviser, Mr Singh

When the mentees commenced their one-on-one mentoring sessions on the 26th of May 2011, most of the students were timid and weren‘t very comfortable with their mentors. But as time went by, discussions were travelling through their mouths. Most students were able to enhance their public speaking skills and they are proudly commended for their confidence and self-reliance.

On the 17th of November 2011, the Principal Mr Mulas gave a touching speech to the mentors and mentees for their success at the GOALS completion ceremony. Richard Landrigan, the representative from ABCN (Australian Business Community Network) also spoke about what the students have achieved during these past six months. Afterwards, students and mentors gave their speeches in pairs. After the speeches were said, mentors along with the mentees, parents and teachers had a morning tea, served especially for the event. Later farewells were said with the bags given to the mentors and that was the mark for the closure of the successful program. By: Ronya Gilani & Ayla Guibone

It has been a great pleasure for me to participate in the 2011 Our Faces Our Stories program. This is an awesome project and we had an unforgettable time together. From my friends in the program, I heard amazing stories, some sad, many happy. I heard stories of brave, dangerous and long journeys. The program helped me to remember my own journey and how lucky I am in my life. The program was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people. We met other students from our school and our mentors who all work at Stocklands. The Stockland‘s employees put a lot of time and effort into helping us with our stories. Without them, I‘m not sure if we would have finished the stories of our lives. During the project, we developed our literacy skills through personal narrative, that is, through writing our personal stories. We also learnt how to use a camera in a professional way with the assistance of Vanessa Wiggins, Stockland‘s General Manager –HS&E. After 18 weeks of hard work, we had each finished our stories and we eagerly awaited the publication of this year‘s book. The book reflects the diversity of Fairfield High School and the local community. It contains stories by students of various ages and from 9 different nationalities, all of whom have had different experiences. Each story shows the tough moments that the students have experienced. Each of them have had their own unique challenge. At the end of the project, we went to Stocklands Head Office and met Mathew

Quinn, the owner of three Stocklands shopping centres. We learnt about how our mentors work, how the company works, the connection between different departments and how it helps the company grow.

To celebrate the completion of our book, we had a farewell party with the book launch which was held at Stockland Mall in Wetherill Park on the 3rd of November, 2011. This was a farewell to our mentors, a teary goodbye to our friends but we have kept our wonderful memories. It has been a great experience. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank the school, our teachers – Ms Deefholts and Mr Campbell, the program coordinators, Mr Sargeant, our mentors, and Stocklands. Speech given by Basim Shamaon at the graduation ceremony.

I'm so grateful to be here today! My name is Basim Shamaon and I was born in (Baghdad) the capital city of Iraq. I won the lottery in 2005 when I migrated to Australia because here is the true value of peace. I went to the Intensive English Centre (IEC) and I stayed there for one year. After that I came to this beautiful school where I completed my school certificate and my higher school certificate with the support of the helpful teachers. I love the environment of this multicultural school. This school did not only provided me with the high quality of education but also gave me the opportunity to participate in different programs that was organised by the teachers because my dream was always to be part of my local community group and take part in the preservation and celebration of different cultures. And my dream becomes true because I am volunteering for my community through activities that have short and long

benefits to others and more importantly, contributing towards improving the quality of life for others. In addition to my current university degree, I am a volunteer and a member for more than 30 community organisations. I‘m just 20 years of age and few weeks ago I was named a Peace Ambassador by the Universal Peace Federation for my work in the community. I‘m proud of the work I do and my participation in activities that had a positive impact on the city of Fairfield to name few of my voluntary work;

Visits two different nursing homes Provide free JP services every Friday at

the local library

Member of the Fairfield Youth Advisory Committee and a member of the Multicultural Youth Network which require running workshops and volunteering for different events. And due to the time I can‘t go through all of my voluntary work but all I can say is I have shown a clear commitment to my local identity and eagerness to add to the improvement of the Fairfield City community because since I migrated to Australia and until now my focus has been on community services. As a citizen of this country I believe Australia deserves a lot from us and this is my way of paying it back to our country. It is a good day when I can close my eyes at night knowing that I have helped another person and made a difference. Finally, my advice to all students is you were put on this earth to make a difference. The sooner you start, the sooner you will succeed. And if I can do all of this work for the community, I‘m sure youse can too. Thank you!

2011 has been a year of patience in the library. What I had hoped to be achieved by the beginning of 2011 has taken another year and at the time of writing we are almost there. Certainly the new school fencing is in place and the gates are operational. These changes were originally linked to the student ID cards and as such, the issue of ID Cards through the Library has not taken place this year. I am hopeful that I can begin to issue the new, revised and redesigned ID Cards for both staff and students for the 2012 academic year in the very near future. The major physical change in the library this year has been the conversion of the Upstairs section of the Library from housing the fiction collection to a senior study area for Years 11 and 12 students. This has worked well and in a very short time, I am hopeful that at least 8 computers will be operational up there for our senior students. A camera has been installed outside the main entrance of the Library and before the end of 2011, 6 cameras will be installed inside the library to assist in the monitoring of how students use the library and these cameras will also help with monitoring student bag security. In the next few weeks the library staff will complete a full stocktake of all the resources in the library and in each faculty. With the finalization of these changes, in 2012 the library will then be known as the Learning Resource Centre to better reflect the changing nature of school libraries. This year, the Library has been used to stage various activities beyond the traditional view of how a library should be utilized. Amongst these activities have been the following: 1. The staging of inter class and inter school debates which have been organized by Mrs C Weber.

2. The staging of the Inter school Chess competition after school which was coordinated by Mr M Spicer. 3. The Library stages the Homework Centre every Tuesday to Thursday afternoons after school. Various specialist teachers are available in the Homework Centre to assist our students with their homework and assessment tasks.

4. There was a talk given to our Year 9:1 History class and the Year 9 History Elective class on Australia‘s participation in World War 2 with particular emphasis on the campaigns of Kokoda and Tobruk. This talk was given by the Author Mr David Mulligan – who has written several books on this era of Australian History. 5. The staging of the I.E.P. Program which is co ordinated by Mrs C Duncan. 6. The staging of the 100 Faces Program which is co ordinated by Mr M Sargeant and Ms S Deefholts. 7. The staging of the Year 11 Mentoring program conducted by some of the staff from Stocklands and coordinated by Mrs C Duncan.

As Teacher Librarian, I also had the privilege of taking 18 students on the annual Bookfeast Excursion which this year was held at Burwood RSL Club. Bookfeast is where our students listen to talks given by various authors about the latest novels they have written. Also accompanying me on that Excursion was Ms S Poblete.

Another excursion that I had the privilege of going on this year was when I accompanied 2 of our year 9 students to Monte Sant Angelo Mercy College at North Sydney. The students concerned spoke to the students at Monte about issues facing refugee students in Australia. The students who attended were Sali Mohan and Ayla Guibone. The library has continued to increase the number of teenage magazines that we subscribe to which continue to prove a popular resource with our students. Amongst the goals for the library in 2012 are the following. 1. To further develop the I.E.C. collection within the library. 2. To continue to increase the range and depth of our fiction collection. 3. To revitalize the year 7 Library program and in doing so, to work more closely with Fairfield Primary school. 4. To complete the re–signage of the Library. 5. And finally, to explore and implement the use of E Books within the library. Of course, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge and thank several people for their

support, without which, none of these reforms would have taken place. Firstly, to Mr Mulas the school Principal whose door is always open to me discuss an idea. Mr Mulas and I have been working for the past four years on an extended use of the student/staff ID Card system, which is tied to the school security system and which is currently being implemented. To my immediate superior, Mr M Sargeant, with whom I meet with on a daily basis. To Mrs C Duncan for her enthusiasm for the changes that are being implemented. To Mrs Palmer, who works with me in the Library on a daily basis, goes my heartfelt thanks. To Mrs L Shimshon for her assistance in helping me with organizing the Flag and Costume display for Multi Cultural Day each year. Also to Ms K Hannigan for her assistance not only in introducing ICT skills to my Year 9 History class but also, for her help in re designing the section of the school website that relates to the Library. And not forgetting the rest of the teaching staff both in the high school and the I.E.C. The staff are not the only members of the school community that I should express my thanks to. This library would not operate without the enthusiastic help of our Library monitors. The following students need to come in for special praise on a job well done. Ayla

Guibone, Sali Mohan, Bethany Lu, Ronya Gilani, Gemma and Caitlin Palmer, Jason Travis and Jenny Pham. Each year, one of our students receives the Fale Von Dinklage Memorial award for outstanding voluntary service in the school library and

this year, for the first time, the award will be presented to 2 students: Sali Mohan and Ayla Guibone. Mr A Downie Teacher – Librarian

In the previous years, Mr. Conlan has put his time and effort in organising excursions to Perisher in the Snowy Mountains. In 2011, 20 students joined Mr. Conlan, Ms. Goldsmith and Mr. Naicker on a fantastic excursion where we learned about the Snowy Mountains and along the way learnt how to ski and snowboard. Day one involved a long torturing bus ride which left Fairfield High School at midnight and came to an end at Jindabyne which is the major town at the foot of the Snowy Mountains.

Upon arrival, students collected their ski equipment and departed to Blue cow ski fields by bus followed by an underground train ride. Once there, the students were enthusiastic and excited and dispersed immediately for their first ski lessons. We skied all day long and although it was a very long day (without much sleep the night before) still managed to enjoy what the mountains had to offer which included fantastic scenery and an opportunity to see snow which most of us had never seen before. The day ended with dinner and a very early bed time whilst we rested sore bones and lots of bruises. The following day, Mr. Conlan was kind enough to wake us up at the very early hour of

6am for breakfast as he was very eager for us to get a full day on the snow and get the most out of our skiing experience. Students attended ski lessons again and decided to try and compete with Mr. Conlan,

the professional snow boarder. Compared to him we looked like amateurs nevertheless, we still attempted to face the big mountain that came before us. As the day ended, it was amazing to see how far everyone had come along with their skiing /snowboarding and all the smiling faces from a great day once again on the snow fields. The last day came around once again and saw us back on the mountains trying hard to look like professionals. Again, everybody did so well and we can‘t wait to sometime get back to Perisher and keep practicing what we had learnt. Overwhelmingly, students thought it was an awesome camp to be a part of. It gave students a special opportunity to experience something that they would normally have experienced in our lives and we are thankful to the school and the staff for allowing this camp to go ahead and organizing it. Dr Who? Dr Karl of course! Is climate change REAL? Is the world going to end in 2012? Why is poo brown? Nobel Prize winner and celebrity genius Dr Karl Kruszelnicki had answered the universe‘s most alien questions. His insightful presentation was offered to the lucky science students during his visit to our school on Tuesday 25th of October. Fairfield High School welcomed Dr Karl as he drove through our gates dressed in a loud shirt and sandals. The prestigious scientist who holds degrees in mathematics, biomedical engineering, medicine and surgery has also worked as a labourer, TV weatherman and medical doctor. The Ig Nobel Prize was awarded to him in 2002 for his extensive research into belly button lint. (Warning to all hairy men: you are more prone to belly button fluff than anyone else!)

Covering everything from climate change, to computers, biology and physics; Dr Karl‘s presentation was the ultimate scientific kit for your next science lesson. We truly thank Dr Karl for his inspiring appearance and generous donation of over 30 books to the school library. Oh, and if you are wondering, climate change IS real…so renewable energy all the way! Why can‘t we have blue poo? Well, broken down red blood cells turn it brown, not because you eat excessive amounts of chocolate. For those HSC students in 2012…hit the books because the world is not going to end in 2012. Any other pressing and outrageous scientific questions? Check out Dr Karl‘s cool books in our library or head to http://www.drkarl.com Elaine Yeo

Year 10 Mexican FIESTA! On the 28th of October 2011 15 year 10 students studying Spanish as a second language had the opportunity to make some delicious Mexican food. The class split up into group of 3 more and embarked on the journey of making tacos. Off we went to our benches to the beat of Salsa music and started making mouth-watering tacos. Ole amigos, you can try this at home too- see our instructions: Ingredients Chicken/mincemeat - 1 handful per person Taco shells/ tortilla-2 per person Salsa- to desired taste Jalapeno- to taste Lettuce- 2 leafs per person Cheese- to taste Onion -1/4 per person Oil one table spoon Salt – to taste To begin our taco making we had to: 1. Collect the ingredients 2. Cut the chickens into small pieces 3. Get a adequate pan 4. Place a small amount of oil inside the pan 5. Let the pan heat up before placing the mince inside the pan

6. Chop the jalapeno (not too much- MUY CALIENTE) 7. Then place the jalapeno in the pan and mix well with the mine meat. 8. Cut up the onion and place it in the pan 9. Pour a small amount of taco flavouring into the pan (don‘t forget) 10. Mix until cooked 11. Wash and dry pan 12. Put a small amount of oil in the pan 13. Place the chicken in the pan 14. Pour flavouring pour flavouring into the pan and mix well 15. While chicken is cooking make the Guacamole. Cut the avocado in half, and then take the skin of the avocado off. Then squash the avocado, then add a pinch of salt and squish half a lemon. 16. Now mix well to finish the guacamole 17. Place tacos in the oven for 5 minutes 18. Check the chicken 19. Take the chicken out of the pan and pour into a bowl 20. Make tacos 21. Put your choice of topping in the tacos 22. Put a choice of topping in the tacos 23. Sit down with a group of friends (amigos) and enjoy.

Our funny mistakes when making our tacos: When cooking the meat we tasted it too early and therefore we could taste the blood yuck! We forgot to add the flavouring to our mincemeat, so we had to put our meat back into the pan with the flavouring this time…we overcooked the mincemeat. In the end it tasted like rubber.

Beware; when making the guacamole as we had to cut the avocado but we forgot it had a seed so when cutting it in half our knife became stuck in the seed, then we went overboard on the lemon. “Yum! Sour guacamole and rubbery meat!” Overall

Making the tacos was a very fun and funny experience as many of us had never cooked them before. The taco making was another way for our class to come together and have a good laugh practise some Spanish have a really good time and enjoy some delicious food. To our dear peers choosing subjects for next year we recommend that you choose Spanish, a fun and engaging subject, and who knows you might get the chance to cook tacos.

“Movers and Shakers”

VISUAL ARTS

2011 has been a busy time of the year for our Visual Arts students in Years 9, 10 and 11, all having the opportunity to attend some creative excursions and workshops. We have also welcomed some guest artists from Sydney University who have worked with 7 Purple on a film project. Two of our Year 9 students have had their work reproduced on the Sydney University Christmas poster after winning the screen printing competition against students from other participating schools. Congratulations to Diana Mamo and Christian Townsend! Our biggest achievement has seen two outstanding students from Year 10 win top places in the Fairfax Community Newspaper Advertising Competition.

Glena Travis won the competition and received a $500 award and Mary Habib achieved 2Nd prize with $250. Both these girls had their work published in the Fairfield City Champian. They also contributed to the whole class getting 1st place in the class competition and winning $600 for the school. This class also had a very innovative installation at the school Exhibition and were selected to have their work shown at School Spectacular. The Visual Arts staff would like to congratulate all these students on their efforts and achievements and hope our talented students can continue their Winning streak next year. Early Career Teachers from Fairfield and Fairvale High Schools attended an informative workshop at Fairfield RSL on Friday, 11 November. Lee Ferguson, Rabieh Gharibeh, Eliss Razko, Ajla Bajic and Julie Wilshire were among the attendees from Fairfield High. The ECT Workshop was divided into three sessions. The first session ‗Understanding CONTEXT‘, presented by Peter Rouse (DP Fairvale) encouraged teachers to analyse their working environment, what they do and the structure of a school system. The second session ‗Building CHARACTER‘, presented by Christine Casey (National Partnerships Support Officer), introduced Emotional Intelligence and the impact on teachers, their colleagues and students. The third session, ‗Developing COMPETENCE‟, presented by John Frew (Principal, Holsworthy High School), provided a brief overview of the process of memory formation and the influence of the environment. This session helped teachers to understand students‘ cognitive

processes and adjust their learning accordingly. Teachers were provided with strategies to facilitate creating an effective learning environment. Feedback from ECTs was very positive indicating not only did they enjoy the venue and the presentations but also the opportunity to network with colleagues across the two schools was invaluable. They enjoyed analysing their role as a teacher, recognising and building emotional intelligence and developing an understanding of students‘ cognitive structure to adjust strategies in the learning environment. As a result of the Workshop, ECTs were able to: Understand CONTEXT Build CHARACTER Develop COMPETENCE Fairfield High School supports the development of their Early Career Teachers ensuring they have access to meaningful professional learning that promotes quality teaching and quality teachers.

There has been plenty happening during the last term with our basketballers.

A new lunch competition has begun. Open boys played in the NSW high school tournament at Bankstown. Eight students complete beginners refereeing course at Cabramatta PCYC. Sydney Kings player Alex Gynes came to our school for a training session with students.

There have been three excursions to Sydney Kings games.
